Abstract
The development of energy-saving technology for the efficient separation of olefin and paraffin is highly important for the chemical industry. Herein, we report a self-assembled Fe4 L6 capsule containing a hydrophobic cavity, which can be used to encapsulate and separate propylene/propane. The successful encapsulation of propylene and propane by the Fe4 L6 cage in a water solution was documented by NMR spectroscopy. The binding constants K for the Fe4 L6 cage toward propylene and propane were determined to be (5.0±0.1)×103 M-1 and (2.1±0.7)×104 M-1 in D2 O at 25 °C, respectively. Experiments and theoretical studies revealed that the cage exhibited multiple weak interactions with propylene and propane. The polymer-grade propylene (>99.5 %) can be obtained from a mixture of propylene and propane by using the Fe4 L6 cage as a separation material in a U-shaped glass tube. This work provides a new strategy for the separation of olefin/paraffin.

Abstract
Using natural gas as chemical feedstock requires efficient oxidation of the constituent alkanes-and primarily methane1,2. The current industrial process uses steam reforming at high temperatures and pressures3,4 to generate a gas mixture that is then further converted into products such as methanol. Molecular Pt catalysts5-7 have also been used to convert methane to methanol8, but their selectivity is generally low owing to overoxidation-the initial oxidation products tend to be easier to oxidize than methane itself. Here we show that N-heterocyclic carbene-ligated FeII complexes with a hydrophobic cavity capture hydrophobic methane substrate from an aqueous solution and, after oxidation by the Fe centre, release a hydrophilic methanol product back into the solution. We find that increasing the size of the hydrophobic cavities enhances this effect, giving a turnover number of 5.0 × 102 and a methanol selectivity of 83% during a 3-h methane oxidation reaction. If the transport limitations arising from the processing of methane in an aqueous medium can be overcome, this catch-and-release strategy provides an efficient and selective approach to using naturally abundant alkane resources.

Abstract
The precise positioning of functional groups about the inner space of abiotic hosts is a challenging task and of interest for developing more effective receptors and catalysts akin to those found in nature. To address it, we herein report a synthetic methodology for preparing basket-like cavitands comprised of three different aromatics as side arms with orthogonal esters at the rim for further functionalization. First, enantioenriched A (borochloronorbornene), B (iodobromonorbornene), and C (boronorbornene) building blocks were obtained by stereoselective syntheses. Second, consecutive A-to-B and then AB-to-C Suzuki-Miyaura (SM) couplings were optimized to give enantioenriched ABC cavitand as the principal product. The robust synthetic protocol allowed us to prepare (a) an enantioenriched basket with three benzene sides and each holding either tBu, Et, or Me esters, (b) both enantiomers of a so-called "spiral staircase" basket with benzene, naphthalene, and anthracene groups surrounding the inner space, and (c) a photo-responsive basket bearing one anthracene and two benzene arms.

Abstract
Nerve agents are tetrahedral organophosphorus compounds (OPs) that were developed in the last century to irreversibly inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and therefore impede neurological signaling in living organisms. Exposure to OPs leads to a rapid development of symptoms from excessive salivation, nasal congestion and chest pain to convulsion and asphyxiation which if left untreated may lead to death. These potent toxins are prepared on a large scale from inexpensive staring materials, making it feasible for terrorist groups or states to use them against military and civilians. The existing antidotes provide limited protection and are difficult to apply to a large number of affected individuals. While new prophylactics are currently being developed, there is still need for therapeutics capable of both preventing and reversing the effects of OP poisoning. In this review, we describe how the science of molecular recognition can expand the pallet of tools for rapid and safe sequestration of nerve agents.

Abstract
Covalent capsule 1 was designed to include two molecular baskets linked with three mobile pyridines tucked into its inner space. On the basis of both theory (DFT) and experiments (NMR and X-ray crystallography), we found that the pyridine "doors" split the chamber (380 Å3 ) of 1 so that two equally sizeable compartments (190 Å3 ) became joined through a conformationally flexible aromatic barrier. The compartments of such unique host could be populated with CCl4 (88 Å3 ; PC=46 %), CBr4 (106 Å3 ; 56 %) or their combination CCl4 /CBr4 (PC=51 %), with thermodynamic stabilities ΔG° tracking the values of packing coefficients (PC). Halogen (C-X⋅⋅⋅π) and hydrogen bonding (C-H⋅⋅⋅X) contacts held the haloalkane guests in the cavities of 1. The consecutive complexations were found to occur in a negative allosteric manner, which we propose to result from the induced-fit mode of complexation. Newly designed 1 opens a way for probing the effects of inner conformational dynamics on noncovalent interactions, reactivity and intramolecular translation in confined spaces of hollow molecules.

Abstract
We describe a preparative method for directing Mizoroki-Heck cyclotrimerization of enantioenriched bromonorbornenes into molecular baskets having increasingly deeper and extendable aromatic cavities. Such diastereoselective cyclotrimerizations of the bromo-olefinic substrates resulted from prevalent β migratory insertions without the formation of palladacycle intermediate(s). The facile access to multigram quantity of a new series of basket-like hosts clears the way for creating novel supramolecular materials for storage, sequestration and catalysis.

Abstract
Whilst cucurbit[n]urils (CBn) have been utilized in gas encapsulation, only the smaller CBn (n = 5 and 6) have utility given their small cavity size. In this work, we demonstrate that the large cavity of CB8 can be tailored for gaseous and volatile hydrocarbon encapsulation by restricting its internal cavity size with auxiliary aryl-bisimidazolium (Bis, aryl = phenyl, naphthyl, and biphenyl) guests. The binding constants for light hydrocarbons (C ≤ 4) are similar to those measured with CB6, while larger values are obtained with Bis·CB8 for larger guests. A clear propensity for higher affinities of alkenes relative to alkanes is observed, most pronounced with the largest delocalized naphthalene residue in the auxiliary Bis guest, which provides unique evidence for sizable small-molecule π-π interactions.

Abstract
We describe a stereoselective method for obtaining multigram quantities of molecular basket 1 syn in overall 11% yield, using inexpensive cyclopentadiene and diethyl fumarate as starting materials. First, an asymmetric synthesis of enantioenriched bromo(trimethylstannyl)alkene (-)-8 was accomplished by the stereoselective bromination of dibromonorbornene (+)-4 guided by anchimeric assistance and subsequent syn- exo-elimination of tetrabromonorbornane (-)-5a as the key steps. Subsequent Cu(I)-catalyzed cyclotrimerization of (-)-8 was optimized to give 1 syn/ anti in 85% yield and 1:1 ratio of diastereomers. Importantly, the results of our mechanistic experiments were in line with the cyclotrimerization occurring in a chain-type fashion with racemization of a Cu(I) homochiral dimeric intermediate, reducing the stereoselectivity of the transformation. Enabled by more facile access to molecular baskets of type 1 syn, a range of recognition studies can now be completed for producing novel supramolecular catalysts, organophosphorus scavengers, and nanostructured materials.

Abstract
The host-guest complexation of hydrocarbons (22 guest molecules) with cucurbit[7]uril was investigated in aqueous solution using the indicator displacement strategy. The binding constants (103-109 M-1) increased with guest size, pointing to the hydrophobic effect and dispersion interactions as driving forces. The measured affinities provide unique benchmark data for the binding of neutral guest molecules. Consequently, a computational blind challenge, the HYDROPHOBE challenge, was conducted to allow a comparison with state-of-the-art computational methods for predicting host-guest affinity constants. In total, three quantum-chemical (QM) data sets and two explicit-solvent molecular dynamics (MD) submissions were received. When searching for sources of uncertainty in predicting the host-guest affinities, the experimentally known hydration energies of the investigated hydrocarbons were used to test the employed solvation models (explicit solvent for MD and COSMO-RS for QM). Good correlations were obtained for both solvation models, but a rather constant offset was observed for the COSMO data, by ca. +2 kcal mol-1, which was traced back to a required reference-state correction in the QM submissions (2.38 kcal mol-1). Introduction of the reference-state correction improved the predictive power of the QM methods, particularly for small hydrocarbons up to C5.

Abstract
Molecular baskets capture various tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligands, with and without zinc(II) cation, to form nesting complexes. The results of our computational (MD) and experimental (1H NMR/ITC) studies suggest that the assembly is driven by the hydrophobic effect with the charge of complementary molecular components playing an important role in the formation of nesting complexes. In brief, the complexation only takes place when the basket and the ligand carry either oppositely charged or noncharged groups.

Abstract
In order to identify potential de novo enzyme templates for the cleavage of C–C single bonds in long-chain hydrocarbons, we analyzed protein structures that bind substrates containing alkyl and alkenyl functional groups. A survey of ligand-containing protein structures deposited in the Protein Data Bank resulted in 874 entries, consisting of 194 unique ligands that have ≥10 carbons in a linear chain. Fatty acids and phospholipids are the most abundant types of ligands. Hydrophobic amino acids forming α-helical structures frequently line the binding pockets. Occupation of these binding sites was evaluated by calculating both the buried surface area and volume employed by the ligands; these quantities are similar to those computed for drug–protein complexes. Surface complementarity is relatively low due to the nonspecific nature of the interaction between the long-chain hydrocarbons and the hydrophobic amino acids. The selected PDB structures were annotated on the basis of their SCOP and EC identification numbers, which will facilitate design template searches based on structural and functional homologies. Relatively low surface complementarity and ∼55% volume occupancy, also observed in synthetic-host, alkane-guest systems, suggest general principles for the recognition of long-chain linear hydrocarbons.
