Abstract
Benzoborirenes are a very rare class of strained boron heterobicyclic systems. In this study a kinetically stabilized benzoborirene 1 is shown to react with multiple bonds of trimethylphosphine oxide, acetaldehyde, and tert-butyl isonitrile. The (2 + 2) cycloaddition product with trimethylphosphine oxide, benzo[c][1,2,5]oxaphosphaborole, has a long apical PO bond (194.0 pm) that must be considered on the border line between ionic and covalent according to the natural bond orbital, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, and compliance matrix approaches to the description of chemical bonding. The coordination compound between the benzoborirene and phosphine oxide was observed by NMR spectroscopy at 213 K. The Lewis acidity of 1 is similar to that of B(OCH2CF3)3 and B(C6F5)3 based on the 31P{1H} NMR chemical shift of the Lewis acid base complexes with trimethylphosphine oxide at 213 K. Benzoboriene 1 does not react with acetone, but forms a (2 + 2) cycloaddition product, an oxaborole, with acetaldehyde. In contrast, it undergoes a double (2 + 1) reaction with tert-butyl isonitrile to yield a boro-indane derivative under mild conditions. The observed reactivity of 1 is in agreement with computational analyses of the respective potential energy surfaces.

Abstract
Condensed phosphates are a critically important class of molecules in biochemistry. Non-natural analogues are important for various applications, such as single-molecule real-time DNA sequencing. Often, such analogues contain more than three phosphate units in their oligophosphate chain. Consequently, investigations into phosphate reactivity enabling new ways of phosphate functionalization and oligophosphorylation are essential. Here, we scrutinize the potential of phosphates to act as arynophiles, paving the way for follow-up oligophosphorylation reactions. The aryne phosphate reaction is a powerful tool to-depending on the perspective-(oligo)phosphorylate arenes or arylate (oligo-cyclo)phosphates. Based on Kobayashi-type o-silylaryltriflates, the aryne phosphate reaction enables rapid entry into a broad spectrum of arylated products, like monophosphates, diphosphates, phosphodiesters and polyphosphates. The synthetic potential of these new transformations is demonstrated by efficient syntheses of nucleotide analogues and an unprecedented one-flask octaphosphorylation.

Abstract
A novel three-component reaction of arynes, sodium sulfinates, and aldehydes under mild reaction conditions is described. This transformation provides a direct synthetic approach to 2-sulfonyl benzyl alcohol derivatives, which could be rapidly converted to diverse arylsulfur compounds via the transformation of the corresponding hydroxyl groups. Various aryne precursors, sodium arenesulfinates, and aromatic aldehydes can be effectively converted to the desired products in 40-84% yields (29 examples).

Abstract
The direct C2-functionalization of pyridines through a transition-metal-free protocol by using aryne multicomponent coupling is demonstrated. The reaction allowed a broad-scope synthesis of C2-substituted pyridine derivatives bearing the -CF3 group in good yields with α,α,α-trifluoroacetophenones as the third component. Activated keto esters could also be employed as the third component in this formal 1,2-di(hetero)arylation of ketones. Performing the reaction under dilute conditions inhibited the competing pyridine-aryne polymerization pathway. Nucleophilic attack by the initially generated pyridylidene intermediate on the carbonyl followed by an SN Ar process resembling the Smiles rearrangement affords the desired products.

Abstract
Multicomponent phosphonylation is accomplished upon the reaction of an imine with an aryne generated in situ in the presence of a dialkyl phosphite. This transition-metal-free protocol shows a broad substrate scope, providing a variety of α-aminophosphonates in moderate to good yields. A plausible mechanism for the reaction is proposed based on a deuterium exchange experiment.

A mild and easy to perform multicomponent coupling involving phosphines, arynes generated from 2-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates, and CO2 allowing the transition-metal-free synthesis of zwitterionic phosphonium benzoates has been developed. The reaction proceeds via the generation of 1 : 1 zwitterionic intermediates from phosphines and arynes followed by the interception with CO2 to deliver the carboxylates in moderate to good yields instead of the anticipated benzooxaphosphol-3(1H)-ones.

Abstract
Arynes are highly reactive intermediates having several applications in organic synthesis for the construction of various ortho-disubstituted arenes. Traditionally, arynes are generated in solution from haloarenes under strongly basic conditions. However, the scopes of many of the aryne reactions are limited because of the harsh conditions used for their generation. The renaissance of interest in aryne chemistry is mainly due to the mild conditions for their generation by the fluoride-induced 1,2-elimination of 2-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates. This Account is focused on the Diels-Alder reaction of arynes and their transition-metal-free application in multicomponent couplings as well as arylation reactions. The Diels-Alder reaction of arynes is a powerful tool for constructing benzo-fused carbocycles and heterocycles. In 2012, we developed an efficient, broad-scope, and scalable Diels-Alder reaction of pentafulvenes with arynes affording benzonorbornadiene derivatives. Subsequently, we accomplished the Diels-Alder reaction of arynes with dienes such as 1,2-benzoquinones and tropones. Moreover, we uncovered a transition-metal-free protocol for the synthesis of 9,10-dihydrophenanthrenes by the reaction of arynes with styrenes that proceeds via a Diels-Alder/ene-reaction cascade. In addition, we demonstrated the reaction of arynes with indene/benzofurans, which proceeds via a tandem [4 + 2]/[2 + 2] sequence. Multicomponent coupling (MCC) involving arynes mainly comprises the initial addition of a nucleophile to the aryne followed by interception of the aryl anion intermediate with an electrophile (provided the nucleophilic and electrophilic moieties do not belong to the same molecule). We have disclosed aryne MCCs initiated by N-heterocycles such as (iso)quinoline, pyridine, and aziridines. When (iso)quinoline is used as the nucleophilic trigger and N-substituted isatin as the third component, the reaction affords spirooxazino(iso)quinolines via 1,4-dipolar intermediates. Unexpectedly, using pyridine affords indolin-2-ones, where the reaction proceeds via the pyridylidene intermediate. Additionally, we developed the phosphine-triggered aryne MCCs for the synthesis of functionalized benzooxaphospholes. In another phase of our work, we studied the synthetic utility of CO2 as a one-carbon synthon in aryne MCCs for the synthesis of phthalimides. Engaging arynes as an aryl source is one of the transition-metal-free methods for arylation reactions. We have demonstrated the N-arylation of aromatic tertiary amines and O-arylation of aliphatic alcohols using arynes. It is anticipated that the chemistry of arynes will continue to prosper and will lead to surprising developments for the synthesis of various 1,2-disubstituted arenes of molecular complexity and structural diversity. Future challenges in this area include the utility of arynes in enantioselective transformations and the synthesis and reactions of exotic heterocyclic arynes.

Abstract
Interaction of 4,5-dimethyl-2-(2-oxo-1,2-diphenyl)ethoxy-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane, bearing a carboxyl group in the γ-position with respect to the phosphorus atom and obtained from d,l-butanediol, with hexafluoroacetone (CCl4, -40 °C) leads to the simultaneous formation of regio- and stereoisomeric cage-like phosphoranes with phosphorus-carbon and phosphorus-oxygen bonds with a high stereoselectivity (>95%), whose structure was determined by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and XRD. When stored as a solution in dichloromethane for one month, the PCO-isomer rearranges into the thermodynamically more stable POC-isomer of the cage-like phosphorane. Mild hydrolysis of the PCO/POC-isomers proceeds with a high chemoselectivity and leads to the formation of P(IV)-dioxaphospholane derivatives. Acidic hydrolysis of the POC-isomer leads to the formation of an oxirane derivative with an unexpectedly high stereoselectivity (>95%). DFT calculations (using the PBE functional) allowed us to obtain structures and energies of the initial phospholane, reaction products (PCO/POC-isomers), and an intermediate P(V)-oxaphosphirane.

Abstract
Tuning of the physicochemical properties of the 1,3-diphosphacyclobutane-2,4-diyl unit is attractive in view of materials applications. The use of arynes is shown to be effective for installing relatively electron rich aryl substituents into the open-shell singlet P-heterocyclic system. Treatment of the sterically encumbered 1,3-diphosphacyclobuten-4-yl anion with ortho-silylated aryl triflates in the presence of fluoride under appropriate conditions afforded the corresponding 1-aryl 1,3-diphosphacyclobutane-2,4-diyls. The air-stable open-shell singlet P-heterocycles exhibit considerable electron-donating character, and the aromatic substituent influences the open-shell character, which is thought to be related to the property of p-type semiconductivity. The P-arylated 1,3-diphosphacyclobutane-2,4-diyl systems can be further utilized as detectors of hydrogen fluoride (HF), which causes a remarkable change in their photoabsorption properties.

Abstract
A new benzyne transformation is described that affords versatile biaryl structures without recourse to transition‐metal catalysis or stoichiometric amounts of organometallic building blocks. Aryl sulfonamides add to benzyne upon fluoride activation, and then undergo an aryl Truce–Smiles rearrangement to afford biaryls with sulfur dioxide extrusion. The reaction proceeds under simple reaction conditions and has excellent scope for the synthesis of sterically hindered atropisomeric biaryl amines.
