Construction of Cobalt-Containing Polyoxovanadate-Based Inorganic-Organic Hybrids as Heterogeneous Catalysts for the Selective Oxidation of Sulfides

In order to develop efficient catalysts for the selective oxidation of sulfides, in this work, two polyoxovanadate-based inorganic-organic hybrids, [Co(H2O)3(3-bpfb)0.5(V2O6)]·(3-bpfb)0.5 (1) and [Co(H2O)2(4-bpfb)0.5(V2O6)] (2) [3-bpfb = N, N'-bis(3-pyridylformamide)-1, 4-benzenediamine, 4-bpfb = N, N'-bis(4-pyridylformamide)-1, 4-benzenediamine], were isolated under hydrothermal conditions. The structures of 1 and 2 embodied two kinds of different cobalt-containing polyoxovanadate-based inorganic chains. Compound 1 contained a one-dimensional inorganic zigzag chain created by the aggregation of {V2O6} clusters with each other, on which Co (II) ions were fixed. But it was an inorganic dimeric chain constructed from two linear {V2O6} cluster-based chains gathered by Co (II) ions in 2. The 3-bpfb and 4-bpfb ligands, as the bidentate linkers, coordinated with two Co (II) ions from adjacent chains to organize them into two-dimensional layers. The hydrogen bonds made important contributions to the formation of supramolecular structures of the two compounds. The two compounds served as heterogeneous catalysts and exhibited efficient activity for the selective oxidation of sulfide to sulfoxide and could be reused at least six times without loss of catalytic activity and stability.

Phosphomolybdates for Dual-Mode Photoelectrochemical Sensing toward Trace Chromium(VI) and Tetracycline

Highly sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors for trace carcinogens, such as heavy metal chromium(VI) [Cr(VI)] and antibiotic tetracycline (TC) are crucial. Herein, by integration of photoactive and redox phosphomolybdates with conjugated organic components, types of dual-mode PEC sensors were synthesized for sensing trace Cr(VI) and TC pollutants, with formulas of (H2bimb)2[Co2(bimb)1.5][Co(H2O)4][Co(P4Mo6O31H6)2]·6H2O (1), (H2bib)2[Co(H2O)3][Co2(H2O)5][Co(P4Mo6O31H6)2]·9H2O (2), and (H2bib)6[Co(Hbib)2(H2O)5][Co(P4Mo6O31H7)2]2·15H2O (3), where bimb represents 1,4-bis(1-imidazolyl)benzene and bib is 4,4'-bis(imidazolyl)bibphenyl. Hybrid 1 consisted of a three-dimensional framework structure constructed by Co{P4Mo6}2 clusters and one-dimensional (1D) {Co-bimb} chains, hybrid 2 exhibited 1D Co ion-bridged Co{P4Mo6}2 chains hydrogen-bonding with [H2bib]2+ cations, and hybrid 3 showed a discrete hybrid structure built upon a Co{P4Mo6}2 cluster modified by the {Co-bib} unit. Hybrids 1-3 displayed wide spectral absorption and excellent electrochemical redox properties, enabling dual-mode PEC responses to Cr(VI) reduction and TC oxidation. For Cr(VI) detection, hybrids 1-3 exhibited high sensitivities of 364.40, 225.72, and 124.29 μA·μM-1 as well as "nM" level detection limits (LODs) of 4.9, 10.0, and 11.0 nM, respectively. For TC detection, the sensitivities of hybrids 1-3 were 494.72, 308.78, and 174.03 μA·μM-1 and the LODs were 5.2, 6.1, and 12.9 nM, respectively. This research offers significant insights into designing efficient PEC sensors for the detection of environmental pollutants.

Using Coordination Chemistry to Control "Click" Reactions: The Selective Formation of Asymmetrically Ligated Polyoxometalates

The Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction between (NBu4)2[V6O13((OCH2)3CCH2N3)2] and 3-ethynylpyridine led to the formation of products capable of forming poorly soluble coordination compounds with transition metal ions such as Cu(I) and Zn(II). The formation of these poorly soluble phases is an important feature that was used to determine the course of reactions, allowing the selective preparation of symmetric bis-pyridyltriazolyl and asymmetric monopyridyltriazolyl derivatives with relatively high yields and high substrate conversions. The asymmetric compound (NBu4)2[V6O13((OCH2)3CCH2-N3C2H-C5H4N)((OCH2)3CCH2N3)] (V6asym) was utilized in the subsequent "click" postfunctionalization reaction with 1,4-diethynylbenzene, resulting in a covalently bound V6asym-V6asym dimer. This dimeric compound was subjected to scanning probe microscopy studies on gold surfaces, which revealed no electronic coupling between the hexavanadate cores within the dimer upon potential-induced switching. This observation indicates that such dimers and higher-order oligomers composed of polyoxometalate-ligand-polyoxometalate bridges can be exploited as active capacitor/memristor units, relevant to increase the data storage capacity of standard memory devices with innovative molecular switching mechanisms.

Synthesis and Structure of High-Nuclearity Carboxylate-Modified Heteropolyoxovanadate Serving as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Alkylbenzenes

A high-nuclearity carboxylic-modified heteropolyoxovanadate, Na2K10H15[P8VIV24(tart)15(H2O)15(OH)O51]·58H2O [1, tart = C4H2O6], has been successfully synthesized by a conventional aqueous method under mild conditions. The crystallographic study reveals that compound 1 crystallizes in the tetragonal I41/a space group and is composed by a trilayer saddle-like polyoxoanion {P8V24}. Two {V3(tart)(H2O)O11} as linking units bridge the top {P4VIV9(tart)7(H2O)4(OH)O23} and the bottom {P4VIV9(tart)6(H2O)9O22} layers via tartrate ligands and {PO4} tetrahedra, resulting in a 24-nuclearity POV skeleton structure. More interestingly, compound 1 serves as a heterogeneous catalyst for the selective oxidation of diphenylmethanes with 96.2% conversion and 93.6% selectivity under the optimized conditions.

Oxo-Replaced Polyoxometalates: There Is More than Oxygen

The presence of oxo-ligands is one of the main required characteristics for polyoxometalates (POMs), although some oxygen ions in a metallic environment can be replaced by other nonmetals, while maintaining the POM structure. The replacement of oxo-ligands offers a valuable approach to tune the charge distribution and connected properties like reducibility and hydrolytic stability of POMs for the development of tailored compounds. By assessing the reported catalytic and biological applications and connecting them to POM structures, the present review provides a guideline for synthetic approaches and aims to stimulate further applications where the oxo-replaced compounds are superior to their oxo-analogues. Oxo-replacement in POMs deserves more attention as a valuable tool to form chemically activated precursors for the synthesis of novel structures or to upgrade established structures with extraordinary properties for challenging applications.

Insights into organic-inorganic hybrid molecular materials: organoimido functionalized polyoxomolybdates

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are polyatomic anions that comprise transition metal group 5 (V, Nb, Ta) or group 6 (Mo, W) oxyanions connected together by shared oxygen atoms. POMs are fascinating because of their exclusive and remarkable characteristics. One of the most interesting features of POMs is their capability to function as an electron relay by performing stepwise multi-electron redox reactions while maintaining their structural integrity. Functionalization of POMs with amino organic compounds results in organoimido derivatives of polyoxometalates, which have aroused interest due to augmentation of their properties. Comprehensive study has shown that the synthesis methodologies to obtain desired organoimido derivatives of POMs by employing various imido-releasing reagents have progressed drastically in recent decades, particularly the innovative DCC-dehydrating technique. These organoimido functionalized POMs have been used as major building blocks to develop unique nanostructured organic-inorganic hybrid molecular materials. Many conventional organic synthesis processes such as Pd-catalyzed carbon-carbon coupling and esterification reactions have been performed with organoimido functionalized POMs where the presence of POM triggered the reaction process. Thus, investigation of the reactivity of organoimido derivatives of POMs foreshadows the intriguing future of POMs chemistry.

Versatile post-functionalisation strategy for the formation of modular organic-inorganic polyoxometalate hybrids

Hybrid structures incorporating different organic and inorganic constituents are emerging as a very promising class of materials since they synergistically combine the complementary and diverse properties of the individual components. Hybrid materials based on polyoxometalate clusters (POMs) are particularly interesting due to their versatile catalytic, redox, electronic, and magnetic properties, yet the controlled incorporation of different clusters into a hybrid structure is challenging and has been scarcely reported. Herein we propose a novel and general strategy for combining multiple types of metal-oxo clusters in a single hybrid molecule. Two novel hybrid POM structures (HPOMs) bis-functionalised with dipentaerythritol (R-POM1-R; R = (OCH2)3CCH2OCH2C(CH2OH)) were synthesised as building-blocks for the formation of heterometallic hybrid triads (POM2-R-POM1-R-POM2). Such a modular approach resulted in the formation of four novel heterometallic hybrids combing the Lindqvist {V6}, Anderson-Evans {XMo6} (X = Cr or Al) and trisubstituted Wells-Dawson {P2V3W15} POM structures. Their formation was confirmed by multinuclear Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), infrared (IR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy, as well as Mass Spectrometry, Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) and elemental analysis. The thermal stability of the hybrids was also examined by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), which showed that the HPOM triads exhibit higher thermal stability than comparable hybrid structures containing only one type of POM. The one-pot synthesis of these novel compounds was achieved in high yields in aqueous and organic media under simple reflux conditions, without the need of any additives, and could be translated to create other hybrid materials based on a variety of metal-oxo cluster building-blocks.

Luminescent cluster-organic frameworks constructed from predesigned supertetrahedral {Ln4Zn6} secondary building units

3d-4f heterometallic supertetrahedral clusters with the formula of Ln₄Zn₆(μ₆-O)L₄(CH₃COO)₆(NO₃)₄(CH₃OH)₄(H₂O)₂ (1-Ln, Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, H₃L = 2-(hydroxymethyl)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3-propanediol) have been successfully introduced as stable secondary building units (SBUs) to construct new cluster-organic frameworks with tunable emission, demonstrating a promising strategy for developing new optical materials.

A Bicadmium-Substituted Polyoxometalate Network Based on a Vanadosilicate Cluster for the Selective Oxidation of Styrene to Benzaldehyde

A new bicadmium-substituted vanadosilicate, [Cd(en)₂]₂[(en)₂Cd₂Si₈V₁₂O₄₀(OH)₈(H₂O)_0.5]·5H₂O (1; en = ethylenediamine), had been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. Structural analysis revealed that the kind of new [(en)₂Cd₂Si₈V₁₂O₄₀(OH)₈(H₂O)_0.5]^4- polyoxoanionic cluster was derived from the classical {V₁₈O₄₂} cluster by replacing six {VO₅} square pyramids with four {Si₂O₇} and two [Cd(en)]²⁺ groups. Notably, such mixed substitution of both main-group and transition metals in polyoxovanadates is much less developed. Furthermore, compound 1 displays efficient catalytic activity toward the selective oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde with a conversion of 97% and a selectivity of 87% in 8 h.

Hybrid polyoxometalates as post-functionalization platforms: from fundamentals to emerging applications

Polyoxometalates (POMs) represent an important group of metal-oxo nanoclusters, typically comprised of early transition metals in high oxidation states (mainly V, Mo and W). Many plenary POMs exhibit good pH, solvent, thermal and redox stability, which makes them attractive components for the design of covalently integrated hybrid organic-inorganic molecules, herein referred to as hybrid-POMs. Until now, thousands of organic hybrid-POMs have been reported; however, only a small fraction can be further functionalized using other organic molecules or metal cations. This emerging class of 'post-functionalizable' hybrid-POMs constitute a valuable modular platform that permits coupling of POM properties with different organic and metal cation functionalities, thereby expanding the key physicochemical properties that are relevant for application in (photo)catalysis, bioinorganic chemistry and materials science. The post-functionalizable hybrid-POM platforms offer an opportunity to covalently link multi-electron redox responsive POM cores with virtually any (bio)organic molecule or metal cation, generating a wide range of materials with tailored properties. Over the past few years, these materials have been showcased in the preparation of framework materials, functional surfaces, surfactants, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and light harvesting materials, among others. This review article provides an overview on the state of the art in POM post-functionalization and highlights the key design and structural features that permit the discovery of new hybrid-POM platforms. In doing so, we aim to make the subject more comprehensible, both for chemists and for scientists with different materials science backgrounds interested in the applications of hybrid (POM) materials. The review article goes beyond the realms of polyoxometalate chemistry and encompasses emerging research domains such as reticular materials, surfactants, surface functionalization, light harvesting materials, non-linear optics, charge storing materials, and homogeneous acid-base catalysis among others.

Two Unprecedented POM-Based Inorganic-Organic Hybrids with Concomitant Heteropolytungstate and Molybdate

Two novel POM-based inorganic-organic hybrids, [Cu₆^II(2,2'-bipy)₆(Mo₆O₂₂)(SiW₁₂O₄₀)]_n (1), and {[Cu₆^II(ppz)₆(H₂O)₅(MoO₄)(SiW₁₂O₄₀)]·4H₂O}_n (2) (2,2'-bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, Hppz = 3-(pyrid-2-yl)pyrazole), have been constructed from heteropolytungstates and molybdates. Two compounds have been identified by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and FT-IR. Compound 1 shows a 1D (one-dimensional) chain structure constructed from classical Keggin heteropolytungstate [SiW₁₂O₄₀]^4- clusters and [Cu₆(2,2'-bipy)₆] modified isopolymolybdates [Mo₆O₂₂]^8-. Compound 2 also represents a 1D chain-like motif built from classical Keggin heteropolytungstate [SiW₁₂O₄₀]^4- clusters and [Cu₈(ppz)₆(H₂O)₅] modified molybdates MoO₄^2-. Compound 1 represents the first example of POM-based inorganic-organic hybrid with mixed heteropolytungstates and isopolymolybdates. ESI-MS (electrospray ionization mass spectrometry) technique was employed to reveal the species and their evolutions in the hydrothermal reaction, whereby trivacant [SiW₉] building block gradually transforms to classical Keggin [SiW₁₂] during assembly process. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic and magnetic properties were discussed in details.

The proton-controlled synthesis of unprecedented diol functionalized Anderson-type POMs

By addition of excess acid into the reaction mixture, a series of organically-derived Anderson-type polyoxometalates, {[R1CR2(CH2O)2]CrMo6O18(OH)4}(3-), with diols as the ligands are reported herein. Such a diol functionalization mode not only works for some specific triol ligands but also can readily be extended to the diol ligands, which will greatly enrich the species of alkoxo-derivatized Anderson POM clusters.

Microwave assisted synthesis of a mono organoimido functionalized Anderson polyoxometalate
