Abstract
Metal- and solvent-free carboxylative cyclization of atmospheric CO2 with alkynol can be achieved using a 1-methylhydantoin anion-functionalized ionic liquid. 1H NMR, in situ FT-IR and DFT calculations indicate that the 1-methylhydantoin anion acts as a "pincer ligand" to form chelative interactions with the hydroxyl group, thereby effectively activating the alkynol.

Abstract
Modulating the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction to achieve anticipant performance is always fascinating for chemists. However, feasible methods and a definite mechanism for tuning the ESIPT reaction remain insufficient. In this work, we reported the feasibility of continuously modulating the ESIPT dynamics in 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)oxazole (HPO) derivatives with different substitutions on the positions 5 and 5' of the core HPO through steady-state/transient spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. We found that the main factor affecting the tendency of the ESIPT reaction is the variation of electron population on proton donor and acceptor. An index Δpdif was proposed to evaluate the overall promotion effect on proton transfer caused by the variation of electron population on proton donor and acceptor, which shows high reliability in interpreting the ESIPT tendency. This method, for its capacity to quickly estimate the tendency of ESIPT, shows great potential in ESIPT molecular design with chemical substitution of electron-donating/withdrawing moieties.

Abstract
In the past decades, tremendous efforts have been invested into organic molecules involved in the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction due to their enormously Stokes-shifted fluorescence and distinctive photophysical properties. The alterations of the environmental medium can effectively adjust the luminous performance of ESIPT molecules, which inspires us to unravel the solvent effect on the ESIPT mechanism. Here, we report the solvent-dependent excited-state properties of two new seven-membered ring pyrrole-indole ESIPT molecules, g-PPDBI and e-PPDBI, by steady-state spectra, picosecond transient fluorescence spectra, femtosecond transient absorption spectra, and theoretical calculations. The bathochromic-shifted normal fluorescence and the negligibly shifted tautomer fluorescence suggest the occurrence of an excited-state intramolecular proton-coupled charge transfer reaction. Thus, the solvent effect plays a vital role in stabilizing the intramolecular charge transferred state, resulting in a higher ESIPT reaction barrier in more polar solvents. Additionally, the observation of the slight dynamic difference between PPDBIs with different π-conjugation positions provides a new strategy to adjust the performance of ESIPT molecules.

Abstract
1H-pyrrolo[3,2-h]qinoline (PQ) and 2-(2′-pyridyl)pyrrole (PP) are important systems in the study of proton-transfer reactions. These molecules possess hydrogen bond donor (pyrrole) and acceptor (pyridine) groups, which leads to the formation of cyclic dimers in their crystals. Herein, we present a joint experimental (Raman scattering) and computational (DFT modelling) study on the high-pressure behaviour of PQ and PP molecular crystals. Our results indicate that compression up to 10 GPa (100 kbar) leads to considerable strengthening of the intermolecular hydrogen bond within the cyclic dimers. However, the intramolecular N–H∙∙∙N interaction is either weakly affected by pressure, as witnessed in PQ, or weakened due to compression-induced distortions of the molecule, as was found for PP. Therefore, we propose that the compression of these systems should facilitate double proton transfer within the cyclic dimers of PQ and PP, while intramolecular transfer should either remain unaffected (for PQ) or weakened (for PP).

Abstract
A new series of molecules bearing a 2,11-dihydro-1H-cyclopenta[de]indeno[1,2-b]quinoline (CPIQ) chromophore with the N-HN type of intramolecular hydrogen bond are strategically designed and synthesized, among which CPIQ-OH, CPIQ-NHAc and CPIQ-NHTs in solution exhibit a single emission band with an anomalously large Stokes shift, whereas CPIQ-NH2 and CPIQ-NHMe show apparent dual-emission property. This, in combination with time-resolved spectroscopy and the computational approach, leads us to conclude that CPIQ-OH, CPIQ-NHAc and CPIQ-NHTs undergo ultrafast, highly exergonic excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), while a finite rate of ESIPT is observed for CPIQ-NH2 and CPIQ-NHMe with a time constant of 117 ps and 39 ps, respectively, in acetonitrile at room-temperature. Further temperature-dependent studies deduce an appreciable ESIPT barrier for CPIQ-NH2 and CPIQ-NHMe. Different from most of the barrier associated ESIPT molecules that are commonly in the thermodynamic-control regime, i.e. found in the thermal pre-equilibrium between excited normal and proton-transfer tautomer states, CPIQ-NH2 and CPIQ-NHMe cases are in the kinetic-control regime where ESIPT is irreversible with a significant barrier. The barrier is able to be tuned by the electronic properties of the -R group in the NR-H proton donor site, resulting in ratiometric fluorescence for normal versus tautomer emission.

Abstract
The substituted effect on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of o-LHBDI derivatives (4R-o-LHBDI) was investigated by DFT and TD-DFT methods. The structures of 4R-o-LHBDI (R: OH, NH2, CN, NO2, CF3) were fully optimized, and the H-bond distances, bond angles, and infrared spectra of the atoms involved in PT process in the S0 and S1 states were analyzed. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were calculated, and the potential energy curves in both S0 and S1 states were constructed. Moreover, the effects of different substituents on the ESIPT mechanism of 4R-o-LHBDI (R: OH, NH2, CN, NO2, CF3) were studied. The results indicate that ESIPT in the 4R-o-LHBDI is a little harder to proceed than that in o-LHBDI since the ESIPT barrier of 4R-o-LHBDI is slightly bigger than that value of o-LHBDI. When the substituent has stronger electron-withdrawing ability or weaker electron-donating ability, the ESIPT process has the smaller potential barrier. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
In this work, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-(2-(3',4'-diaminophenyl)benzothiazole) (named as "BTS") system was studied about its excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. The analyses about reduced density gradient (RDG) reveal the formation of two intramolecular hydrogen bonds in BTS system. Bond lengths and angles, infrared (IR) vibrations as well as frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) using TDDFT method indicate that the strength of hydrogen bond should be enhanced in the S1 state. Particularly, hydrogen bond O1-H2···N3 undergoes larger variations compared with O4-H5···N6, which infers that hydrogen bond O1-H2···N3 may play a decisive role in the ESIPT process of BTS system. Given the two hydrogen bonds of BTS molecule, two types of potential energy curves have been constructed, which confirms that only single proton transfer process occurs due to lower energy barrier along with O1-H2···N3 rather than O4-H5···N6. This work not only presents a reasonable explanation for previous experiment, but also clarifies the specific ESIPT mechanism for BTS system.

Abstract
The reaction dynamics of a photochemical reaction is typically described by reaction coordinates based on the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation. A strong interaction between electrons and nuclei, conventionally occurring at conical intersections, however, breaks the BO approximation and has major consequences for the efficiency of a photochemical reaction. Despite its importance, related studies into the non-BO dynamics are scarce. Here, we investigate the non-BO dynamics of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) occurring in 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline (HBQ). Two coherent vibrational modes at 237 and 794 cm-1 representing molecular dynamics on a diabatic surface in HBQ are identified by a wave packet analysis based on a transient absorption measurement with a time resolution of 11 fs and with a density functional theory-based model calculation. It is also revealed that the strong Coulomb field effect in HBQ leads to the completion of ESIPT within about two cycles of the OH stretching mode. The work paves the way for time-domain studies of molecular dynamics beyond the BO approximation in other photochemical reactions.

Abstract
In order to understand the fine-tuned photo-physical behaviors of the N(X)-H⋯N systems, the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) switching in the N-substituted X1-5-NHIPA molecules (NHIPA = 2-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2-yl)aniline and X = H, COCH3, CH3C6H4SO2, C6F5SO2, and COCF3) were investigated in detail in gas phase and three solvent media at TD-PBE0/6-311++G(d,p) and TD-M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) levels of theory. ESIPT reactions at S1 state were approximately without energy barrier, exergonic processes and were quantitatively demonstrated to be mainly sensitive to substituents and solvent media. The X-NHIPA (X = CH3C6H4SO2, C6F5SO2 and CF3CO) compounds were predicted to undergo fast, irreversible proton transfer at S1 state and, in turn, exhibit tautomer emission with anomalous large Stokes shift in the gas phase. In the toluene solvent, except for C6F5SO2-NHIPA that showed exclusively a tautomer emission with a long wavelength, all other X-NHIPA molecules were predicted to involve in the reversible ESIPT and hence exhibit a dual normal and tautomer emissions behavior, in good agreement with the experimental observations. In polar solvents, it is expected that all compounds show dual normal and tautomer emissions. The nearly equal intensities of the normal and tautomer emissions can lead to the generation of the white lights with the potential in lighting applications.

Abstract
The concept of high-performance excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-based fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) probes for Al3+ is proposed in this work. By regulating the hydroxyl groups on the organic linker step by step, new fluorescent magnesium-organic framework (Mg-MOF) probes for Al3+ ions were established based on the ESIPT fluorescence mechanism. It is observed for the first time that the number of intramolecular hydrogen bonds between adjacent hydroxyl and carboxyl groups can effectively adjust the ESIPT process and lead to tunable fluorescence sensing performance. Together with the well-designed porous and anionic framework, the Mg-TPP-DHBDC probe decorating with a pair of intramolecular hydrogen bonds exhibits extra-high quantitative fluorescence response to Al3+ through an unusual turn-off (0-1.2 μM) and turn-on (4.2-15 μM) luminescence sensing mechanism. Notably, the 28 nM limit of detection value represents the lowest record among all reported MOF-based Al3+ fluorescent sensors up to now. Benefited from the unique turn-off-on ESIPT fluorescence detection process, the Mg-TPP-DHBDC MOF sensor exhibits single Al3+ detection compared with other 16 common metal ions including Ga3+, In3+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Ca2+, and Mg2+. Impressively, such an Al3+ selective sensing process can even be fulfilled by the reusable MOF test paper detected by naked eyes. Overall, the quantitative Al3+ detection, together with the extraordinary sensitivity, selectivity, fast response, and good reusability, strongly supports our concept of ESIPT-based fluorescent MOF Al3+ probes and makes Mg-TPP-DHBDC one of the most powerful Al3+ fluorescent sensors.

Abstract
The effect of substituted alkyl groups at different substituted position on the first excited-state proton transfer of nR7AI-H2O (n = 2-6; R = CH3, C2H5, CF3) complexes were theoretically investigated at the TD-M06-2X/6-31 + G(d, p) level. Here n value denoted the substituted position Cn of R group. The replacement of alkyl R group had no effect on the features of HOMO and LUMO, but influenced the S0 → S1 adiabatic transition energies of the nR7AI-H2O complex. Through computation, we found that the double proton transfer took place in a concerted but asynchronous protolysis pattern regardless of substituted group R and substituted position in the nR7AI-H2O complex. The vibrational-mode specific nature of ESPT was verified. The alkyl group R changed the geometrical parameters of TS, and resulted in enlarging/narrowing the asynchronousity of ESPT. The ESPT barrier height was also affected by the substituted group and position.

Abstract
Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reactions of a series of N(R)H⋯N-type seven-membered-ring hydrogen-bonding compounds were explored by employing density functional theory/time-dependent density functional theory calculations with the PBE0 functional. Our results indicate that the absorption and emission spectra predicted theoretically match very well the experimental findings. Additionally, as the electron-withdrawing strength of R increases, the intramolecular H-bond of the NS1 form gradually enhances, and the forward energy barrier along the ESIPT reaction gradually decreases. For compound 4, its ESIPT reaction is found to be a barrierless process due to the involvement of a strong electron-withdrawing COCF3 group. It is therefore a reasonable presumption that the ESIPT efficiency of these N(R)H⋯N-type seven-membered-ring H-bonding systems can be improved when a strong electron-withdrawing group in R is introduced.

Abstract
Searching for eight-membered ring π-conjugated hydrogen bonding (8-MR H-bonding) systems with excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) property is seminal and synthetically challenging. In this work, a series of π-conjugated molecules (8-HB-1, 8-HB-L1 and 8-HB-2) potentially possessing 8-MR H-bonding are strategically designed, synthesized and characterized. The configurations of these three potential molecules are checked by their X-ray structures, among which 8-HB-L1 (a structurally locked 8-HB-1 core chromophore) is proved to be an 8-MR H-bonding system, whereas 8-HB-1 and 8-HB-2 are too sterically hindered to form the 8-MR intramolecular H-bond. The ESIPT property of 8-HB-L1 is confirmed by the dual fluorescence consisting of normal and proton-transfer tautomer emissions. The insight into the ESIPT process of 8-HB-L1 is provided by femtosecond fluorescence upconversion measurements together with computational simulation. The results demonstrate for the first time a successful synthetic route to attain the 8-MR H-bonding molecule 8-HB-L1 with ESIPT property.

Abstract
In this present work, we theoretically investigate the excited state mechanism for the 2-(phenyl)imidazo[4,5-c]pyridine (PIP-C) molecule combined with methanol (MeOH) solvent molecules. Three MeOH molecules should be connected with PIP-C forming stable PIP-C-MeOH complex in the S0 state. Upon the photo-excitation, the hydrogen bonded wires are strengthened in the S1 state. Particularly the deprotonation process of PIP-C facilitates the excited state intermolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. In our work, we do verify that the ESIPT reaction should occur due to the low potential energy barrier 8.785 kcal/mol in the S1 state. While the intersection of potential energy curves of S0 and S1 states result in the nonradiation transition from S1 to S0 state, which successfully explain why the emission peak of the proton-transfer PIP-C-MeOH-PT form could not be reported in previous experiment. As a whole, this work not only put forward a new excited state mechanism for PIP-C system, but also compensates for the defects about mechanism in previous experiment.

Abstract
Enol-keto proton tautomerization and cis-trans isomerization reactions of a novel excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorophore of BTImP and its protonated form (BTImP+) were explored using density functional theory/time-dependent density functional theory (DFT/TD-DFT) computational methods with a B3LYP hybrid functional and the 6-31+G(d,p) basis set. In addition, the absorption and fluorescence spectra were calculated at the TD-B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory. Our results reveal that both BTImP and BTImP+ can undergo an ultrafast ESIPT reaction, giving rise to the single fluorescence emission with different fluorescence colors, which are nicely consistent with the experimental findings. Calculations also show that following the ultrafast ESIPT, BTImP and BTImP+ can experience the distinctly different cis-trans isomerization processes. The intersystem crossing between the first excited singlet S1 state and triplet T1 state is found to play an important role in the photoisomerization process of BTImP+. In addition, the energy barrier of the trans-keto→cis-keto isomerization in the ground state of BTImP+ is calculated to be 10.49kcalmol-1, which implies that there may exist a long-lived trans-keto species in the ground state for BTImP+.

Abstract
Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) dynamics of the amino-type hydrogen-bonding compound 2-(2'-aminophenyl)benzothiazole (PBT-NH2) as well as its two derivatives 2-(5'-cyano-2'-aminophenyl)benzothiazole (CN-PBT-NH2) and 2-(5'-cyano-2'-tosylaminophenyl)benzothiazole (CN-PBT-NHTs) were studied by the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) approach with the B3LYP density functional, and their absorption and emission spectra were also explored at the same level of theory. A good agreement is observed between the theoretical simulations and experimental spectra, indicating that the present calculations are reasonably reliable. In addition, it is also found that the energy barriers of the first excited singlet state of the three targeted molecules along the ESIPT reaction are computed to be 0.38, 0.34 and 0.12eV, respectively, showing the trend of gradual decrease, which implies that the introduction of the electron-withdrawing cyano or tosyl group can facilitate the occurrence of the ESIPT reaction of these amino-type H-bonding systems. Following the ESIPT, both CN-PBT-NH2 and CN-PBT-NHTs dye molecules can undergo the cis-trans isomerization reactions in the ground-state and excited-state potential energy curves along the C2-C3 bond between benzothiazole and phenyl moieties, where the energy barriers of the trans-tautomer→cis-tautomer isomerizations in the ground states are calculated to be 0.83 and 0.34eV, respectively. According to our calculations, it is plausible that there may exist the long-lived trans-tautomer species in the ground states of CN-PBT-NH2 and CN-PBT-NHTs.

Abstract
A series of new amino (NH)-type intramolecular hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) compounds have been strategically designed and synthesized. These molecules comprise a 2-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2-yl)aniline moiety, in which one of the amino hydrogens was replaced with substituents of different electronic properties. This, together with the versatile capability for modifying the parent moiety, makes feasible comprehensive spectroscopy and dynamics studies of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) as a function of N-H acidity. Different from other (NH)-type ESIPT systems where the ESIPT rate and exergonicity increase with an increase in the N-H acidity and hence the H-bonding strength, the results reveal an irregular relationship among ESIPT dynamics, thermodynamics and H-bond strength. This discrepancy may be rationalized by the localized zwitterionic nature of 2-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2-yl)aniline in the proton-transfer tautomer form, which is different from the π-delocalized tautomer form in other (NH)-type ESIPT systems.

Abstract
The proton transfer (PT) process in 1-(2-hydroxy-5-chloro-phenyl)-3,5-dioxo-1H-imidazo-[3,4-b]isoindole (ADCL) has been studied in three different copolymer-surfactant supramolecular assemblies prepared in aqueous 1% P123 triblock copolymer micellar solution with varying concentrations of surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and triton-X-100 (TX 100)). The aim of the present study is to monitor the modulation of the PT process by changing the degree of micellar hydration inside the P123 micelle with the addition of the three different surfactants (two ionic and one non ionic), that is, in P123-surfactant aggregates. Besides, a comparative study has been done with these results with those in water, pure P123 micellar medium and three different surfactants medium. The micropolarity measurement and time-resolved fluorescence anisotropic measurements have been performed to evaluate the binding location of the probe (ADCL) in the three different copolymer-surfactant supramolecular assemblies. It is found that the micropolarity at the binding site of the molecule in the various environments largely influences the PT rate of ADCL. The PT rate is found to be the slowest in the P123 medium and in P123-surfactant aggregates the rate becomes faster as the micropolarity around the binding locations of the molecule in these aggregates is higher in comparison to that in P123 micelle.
