Gold nanoparticles capped with L-glycine, L-cystine, and L-tyrosine: toxicity profiling and antioxidant potential

Biomolecules-based surface modifications of nanomaterials may yield effective and biocompatible nanoconjugates. This study was designed to evaluate gold nanoconjugates (AuNCs) for their altered antioxidant potential. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and their conjugates gave SPR peaks in the ranges of 512-525 nm, with red or blueshift for different conjugates. Cys-AuNCs demonstrated enhanced (p < 0.05) and Gly-AuNCs (p > 0.05) displayed reduced DPPH activity. Gly-AuNCs and Tyr-AuNCs displayed enhanced ferric-reducing power and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity, respectively. Cadmium-intoxicated mice were exposed to gold nanomaterials, and the level of various endogenous parameters, i.e., CAT, GST, SOD, GSH, and MTs, was evaluated. GSH and MTs in liver tissues of the cadmium-exposed group (G2) were elevated (p < 0.05), while other groups showed nonsignificance deviations than the control group. It is concluded that these nanoconjugates might provide effective nanomaterials for biomedical applications. However, more detailed studies for their safety profiling are needed before their practical applications.

Macrocyclic host molecules with aromatic building blocks: the state of the art and progress

Macrocyclic host molecules play the central role in host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. The highly structural symmetry of macrocyclic host molecules can meet people's pursuit of aesthetics in molecular design, and generally means a balance of design, synthesis, properties and applications. For macrocyclic host molecules with highly symmetrical structures, building blocks, which could be described as repeat units as well, are the most fundamental elements for molecular design. The structural features and recognition ability of macrocyclic host molecules are determined by the building blocks and their connection patterns. Using different building blocks, different macrocyclic host molecules could be designed and synthesized. With decades of developments of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry, diverse macrocyclic host molecules with different building blocks have been designed and synthesized. Aromatic building blocks are a big family among the various building blocks used in constructing macrocyclic host molecules. In this feature article, the recent developments of macrocyclic host molecules with aromatic building blocks were summarized and discussed.

Hydrogen-Bonded Dimeric Capsules with Appended Spiropyran Units: Towards Controlled Cargo Release

We report the synthesis of unprecedented tetra-urea derivatives of calix[4]arene and calix[4]pyrrole containing four spiropyran (SP) units at their upper rim. We investigate the photo- and acid-induced isomerization of the monomeric and homo-dimeric tetra-ureas derivatives using UV-Vis and ¹ H NMR spectroscopies. At micromolar concentration, irradiation of the samples with 365 nm light induces changes in their absorption spectra that are consistent with SP→merocyanine (MC) isomerization. However, analogous experiments at millimolar concentration do not produce noticeable changes in the ¹ H NMR spectra. The addition of triflic acid to micromolar and millimolar solutions of the tetra-ureas produces the quantitative isomerization of the SP units to the protonated merocyanine form (E-MCH⁺ ) and the simultaneous disassembly of the capsular dimers to form ill-defined aggregates. The neutralization of the acid solutions resets the SP form. Under these acid/base treatment conditions, the controlled release of the included guest and the reassembly of the all-SP tetra-urea dimers occurs at different extents depending on its calix[4]arene or calix[4]pyrrole scaffold.

Synthesis, Structure and Supramolecular Properties of a Novel C3 Cryptand with Pyridine Units in the Bridges

The high-yield synthesis and the structural investigation of a new cryptand with C3 symmetry, exhibiting 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine central units and pyridine-based bridges, are reported. The structure of the compound was investigated by single crystal X-ray diffractometry, NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), HRMS (high resolution mass spectrometry) measurements, and theoretical calculations. The study of supramolecular behavior in solid state revealed the association of cryptand molecules by C-H---π and π---π contacts. Moreover, theoretical calculations indicated the high binding affinity of the cryptand for various organic molecules as guests.

Novel Isophthalohydrazide-cDB24C8 cryptand derivative for the selective recognition of fluoride ion: An experimental and DFT study

A highly selective and sensitive novel Isophthalohydrazide-cDB24C8 cryptand derivative was developed for fluoride recognition at a very low concentration of 2.31 × 10^-10 M. The binding was established by UV-Vis, fluorescence and ¹H NMR titration. The receptor formed very strong H-bonded complex with fluoride, furnished a sharp new UV-Vis absorption peak at 280 nm which was also supported by the DFT-study. The fluorescence emission spectra showed large quenching up to 79.13% upon addition of fluoride.

A three-armed cryptand with triazine and pyridine units: synthesis, structure and complexation with polycyclic aromatic compounds

The aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction based synthesis of a three-armed cryptand displaying 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine units as caps and pyridine rings in the bridges, along with NMR, MS and molecular modelling-based structural analysis of this compound are reported. Appropriate NMR and molecular modelling investigations proved the formation of 1:1 host–guest assemblies between the investigated cryptand and some polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons or their derivatives.

Enhancing the solubility and bioactivity of anticancer drug tamoxifen by water-soluble pillar[6]arene-based host-guest complexation

A water-soluble pillar[6]arene functions as a solubilizing agent to enhance the solubility and bioactivity of poorly water-soluble anticancer drug tamoxifen by host-guest complexation between it and tamoxifen.

Acid/base-controllable fluorescent molecular switches based on cryptands and basic N-heteroaromatics

Two kinds of fluorescent BMP32C10-based cryptands 1 and 2 have been developed. Cryptand 1 contains a binaphthol group, while cryptand 2 bears a coumarin group in their third arms. Based on this design, novel self-assemblies constructed from cryptand 1 or 2 and basic N-heteroaromatic guests 3-6 were successfully obtained. Moreover, the threading/dethreading processes of the host-guest complexes could be well switched by the alternate addition of acid/base, and accompanied by concurrent changes in fluorescence.

4-Methylcoumarin-bridged fluorescent responsive cryptand: from [2+2] photodimerization to supramolecular polymer

A fluorescent responsive BMP32C10-based cryptand host was successfully synthesized by introducing a 4-methylcoumarin group to the third arm of the cryptand. The cryptand was able to undergo [2+2] photodimerization on UV irradiation (λ = 365 nm) and, based on the photodimerization and host-guest interaction, a new supramolecular polymer was constructed in a convenient manner.
