Abstract
HYPOTHESIS The origins and behaviour of specific ion effects have been studied in water for more than a century, and more recently in nonaqueous molecular solvents. However, the impacts of specific ion effects on more complex solvents such as nanostructured ionic liquids remains unclear. Here, we hypothesise that the influence of dissolved ions on the hydrogen bonding in the nanostructured ionic liquid propylammonium nitrate (PAN) constitutes a specific ion effect. EXPERIMENTS We performed molecular dynamics simulations of bulk PAN and 1-50 mol% PAN-PAX (X = halide anions F-, Cl-, Br-, I-) and PAN-YNO3 (Y = alkali metal cations, Li+, Na+, K+ and Rb+) solutions to investigate how monovalent salts influence the bulk nanostructure in PAN. FINDINGS The key structural characteristic in PAN is a well-defined hydrogen bond network formed within the polar and non-polar domains in its nanostructure. We show that dissolved alkali metal cations and halide anions have significant and unique influences on the strength of this network. Cations (Li+, Na+, K+ and Rb+) consistently promote hydrogen bonding in the PAN polar domain. Conversely, the influence of halide anions (F-, Cl-, Br-, I-) is ion specific; while F- disrupts PAN hydrogen bonding, I- promotes it. The manipulation of PAN hydrogen bonding therefore constitutes a specific ion effect - i.e. a physicochemical phenomena caused by the presence of dissolved ions, which are dependent on these ions' identity. We analyse these results using a recently proposed predictor of specific ion effects developed for molecular solvents, and show that it is also capable of rationalising specific ion effects in the more complex solvent environment of an ionic liquid.

Abstract
In this work, we deepen in the characterization of two protic ionic liquids (PILs), ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and propylammonium nitrate (PAN). With this aim, we determined the influence of inorganic nitrate salts addition on their physical properties and their electrochemical potential window (EPW). Thus, experimental measurements of electrical conductivity, density, viscosity, refractive index and surface tension of mixtures of {EAN or PAN + LiNO3, Ca(NO3)2, Mg(NO3)2 or Al(NO3)3} at a temperature range between 5 and 95 °C are presented first, except for the last two properties which were measured at 25 °C. In the second part, the corresponding EPWs were determined at 25 °C by linear sweep voltammetry using three different electrochemical cells. Effect of the salt addition was associated mainly with the metal cation characteristics, so, generally, LiNO3 showed the lower influence, followed by Ca(NO3)2, Mg(NO3)2 or Al(NO3)3. The results obtained for the EAN + LiNO3 mixtures, along with those from a previous work, allowed us to develop novel predictive equations for most of the presented physical properties as functions of the lithium salt concentration, the temperature and the water content. Electrochemical results showed that a general order of EPW can be established for both PILs, although exceptions related to measurement conditions and the properties of the mixtures were found.

Abstract
In recent times, ionic liquid-based (ILs) electrolytic system has emerged as suitable alternative to the conventional organic solvent-based electrolytic system. However, since, anion of ILs is known to form aggregates in the presence of lithium-ions (Li+), and this can influence the transport properties of Li+ ion in a significant manner, it is, therefore, important to understand how lithium-ions influence the structure and dynamics of ILs. With this objective, in the present study, intermolecular interaction, structural organization, and dynamics of monocationic ILs (MILs) and dicationic IL (DIL) have been studied in the absence and presence of lithium salt. Specifically, for this purpose, two MILs, 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C3C1im][NTf2]), 1-hexyl-3-propylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C6C1im][NTf2]), and a DIL, 1,6-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)hexane bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C6(mim)2][NTf2]2) have been chosen in such a way that either the alkyl chain of MILs becomes equal or half of the spacer chain length of DIL. To understand the effect of the addition of lithium-ion on the structural organization of MILs and DIL, steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies, time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques have been used. Structural organization in the apolar and polar domains of ILs has been probed by following the rotational diffusion of suitably chosen solute in the concerned media through time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy (TRFA) measurements. TRFA studies have revealed that with the addition of Li+ ion, coordination between the Li+ ions and anions of MILs and DILs takes place in the ionic region leading to a change in the structural organization of the apolar regions of the respective medium. In fact, upon adding lithium-ions, a reduction in the packing of alkyl chains has also been observed for the MILs. However, not much change in the structural organization of the apolar region of the DIL has been observed when Li+ ion is added to it. In the presence of Li+ ions, a similar trend in the change of structural organization of polar regions for both MILs and DIL has been observed. Further, measurements of the self-diffusion coefficient through NMR have also supported the observation that Li+ ion also perturbs the nanostructural organization of the MIL in a significant manner than that it does for the DIL. The behavior of DIL in the presence of Li+ ion, as revealed by the present study, has been rationalized by considering the folded arrangement of DIL in the fluid-structure. Essentially, all of these investigations have suggested that the addition of lithium-ion significantly alters the microscopic behavior of MILs in comparison to that of DIL. The outcome of this study is expected to be helpful in realizing the potentials of these media as electrolytes in battery applications.

Abstract
High-temperature molten salt research is undergoing somewhat of a renaissance these days due to the apparent advantage of these systems in areas related to clean and sustainable energy harvesting and transfer. In many ways, this is a mature field with decades if not already a century of outstanding work devoted to it. Yet, much of this work was done with pioneering experimental and computational setups that lack the current day capabilities of synchrotrons and high-performance-computing systems resulting in deeply entrenched results in the literature that when carefully inspected may require revision. Yet, in other cases, access to isotopically substituted ions make those pioneering studies very unique and prohibitively expensive to carry out nowadays. There are many review articles on molten salts, some of them cited in this perspective, that are simply outstanding and we dare not try to outdo those. Instead, having worked for almost a couple of decades already on their low-temperature relatives, the ionic liquids, this is the perspective article that some of the authors would have wanted to read when embarking on their research journey on high-temperature molten salts. We hope that this will serve as a simple guide to those expanding from research on ionic liquids to molten salts and vice versa, particularly, when looking into their bulk structural features. The article does not aim at being comprehensive but instead focuses on selected topics such as short- and intermediate-range order, the constraints on force field requirements, and other details that make the high- and low-temperature ionic melts in some ways similar but in others diametrically opposite.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation-anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.

Abstract
Ionic liquid (IL) mixtures enable the design of fluids with finely tuned structural and physicochemical properties for myriad applications. In order to rationally develop and design IL mixtures with the desired properties, a thorough understanding of the structural origins of their physicochemical properties and the thermodynamics of mixing needs to be developed. To elucidate the structural origins of the excess molar volume within IL mixtures containing ions with different alkyl chain lengths, 3 IL mixtures containing 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ILs have been explored in a joint small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and 129Xe NMR study. The apolar domains of the IL mixtures were shown to possess similar dimensions to the largest alkyl chain of the mixture with the size evolution determined by whether the shorter alkyl chain was able to interact with the apolar domain. 129Xe NMR results illustrated that the origin of excess molar volume in these mixtures was due to fluctuations within these apolar domains arising from alkyl chain mismatch, with the formation of a greater number of smaller voids within the IL structure. These results indicate that free volume effects for these types of mixtures can be predicted from simple considerations of IL structure and that the structural basis for the formation of excess molar volume in these mixtures is substantially different to IL mixtures formed of different types of ions.

Abstract
Protic ionic liquids (PILs) were utilized for the fabrication of composite membranes containing silver salt as the C2H4 transport carrier to perform C2H4/C2H6 separation for the first time. The intrinsic nanostructures of PILs were adopted to construct fast and selective C2H4 transport nanochannels. The investigation of structure-performance relationships of composite membranes suggested that transport nanochannels (polar domains of PILs) could be tuned by the sizes of cations, which greatly manipulated activity of the carrier and determined the separation performances of membranes. The role of different carriers in the facilitated transport was studied, which revealed that the PILs were good solvents for dissolution and activation of the carrier due to their hydrogen bond networks and waterlike properties. The operating conditions of separation process were investigated systemically and optimized, confirming C2H4/C2H6 selectivity was enhanced with the increase of silver salt concentration, the flow rate of sweep gas, and the feed ratio of C2H4 to C2H6, as well as the decrease of the transmembrane pressure and operating temperature. Furthermore, the composite membranes exhibited long-term stability and obtained very competitive separation performances compared with other results. In summary, PIL composite membranes, which possess good long-term stability, high C2H4/C2H6 selectivity, and excellent C2H4 permeability, may have a good perspective in industrial C2H4/C2H6 separation.

Abstract
Understanding lithium solvation and transport in ionic liquids is important due to their possible application in electrochemical devices. Using first-principles simulations aided by a metadynamics approach we study the free-energy landscape for lithium ions at infinite dilution in ethylammonium nitrate, a protic ionic liquid. We analyze the local structure of the liquid around the lithium cation and obtain a quantitative picture in agreement with experimental findings. Our simulations show that the lowest two free energy minima correspond to conformations with the lithium ion being solvated either by three or four nitrate ions with a transition barrier between them of 0.2 eV. Other less probable conformations having different solvation pattern are also investigated.

Prabhu SR, Dutt GB. Does addition of an electrolyte influence the rotational diffusion of nondipolar solutes in a protic ionic liquid? J Phys Chem B 2015; 119:6311-6. Abstract
Rotational diffusion of two structurally similar nondipolar solutes, 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DMDPP) and 1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP), has been examined in ethylammonium nitrate-lithium nitrate (EAN-LiNO3) mixtures to understand the influence of added electrolyte on the local environment experienced by the solute molecules. The measured reorientation times of both DMDPP and DPP in EAN-LiNO3 mixtures fall within the broad limits set by the hydrodynamic slip and stick boundary conditions. The hydrogen bond accepting DMDPP and the hydrogen bond donating DPP experience specific interactions with the cation and anion of the ionic liquid, respectively. Addition of LiNO3 (0.1 and 0.2 mole fraction) to EAN induces only viscosity related effects on the rotational diffusion of the two nondipolar solutes. These observations suggest that the local environment experienced by DMDPP and DPP in EAN is not altered upon the addition of LiNO3. Our results are consistent with the structural details available in the literature for EAN-LiNO3 mixtures.
