Bioinorganic modeling chemistry of carbon monoxide dehydrogenases: description of model complexes, current status and possible future scopes

Opportunities for Insight into the Mechanism of Efficient CO2/CO Interconversion at a Nickel-Iron Cluster in CO Dehydrogenase

The reduction of CO2 with low overpotential and high selectivity is a crucial challenge in catalysis. Fortunately, natural systems have evolved enzymes that achieve this catalytic reaction very efficiently at a complex nickel-iron-sulfur cluster within carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH). Extensive biochemical, crystallographic, and spectroscopic work has been done to understand the structures and mechanism involved in the catalytic cycle, which are summarized here from the perspective of mechanistic organometallic chemistry. We highlight the ambiguities in the data and suggest experiments that could lead to clearer understanding of the mechanism and structures of intermediates at the active-site cluster. These include parallel crystallography and spectroscopy, as well as the preparation of synthetic analogues that help to interpret structural and spectroscopic signatures.

Nonheme binuclear transition metal complexes with hydrosulfide and polychalcogenides

The intriguing chemistry of chalcogen (S, Se)-containing ligands and their capability to bridge multiple metal centres have resulted in a plethora of reports on transition metal complexes featuring hydrosulfide (HS-) and polychalcogenides (En2-, E = S, Se). While a large number of such molecules are strictly organometallic complexes, examples of non-organometallic complexes featuring HS- and En2- with N-/O-donor ligands are relatively rare. The general synthetic procedure for the transition metal-hydrosulfido complexes involves the reaction of the corresponding metal salts with HS-/H2S and this is prone to generate sulfido bridged oligomers in the absence of sterically demanding ligands. On the other hand, the synthetic methods for the preparation of transition metal-polychalcogenido complexes include the reaction of the corresponding metal salts with En2- or the two electron oxidation of low-valent metals with elemental chalcogen, often at an elevated temperature and/or for a long time. Recently, we have developed new synthetic methods for the preparation of two new classes of binuclear transition metal complexes featuring either HS-, or Sn2- and Sen2- ligands. The new method for the synthesis of transition metal-hydrosulfido complexes involved transition metal-mediated hydrolysis of thiolates at room temperature (RT), while the method for the synthesis of transition metal-polychalcogenido complexes involved redox reaction of coordinated thiolates and exogenous elemental chalcogens at RT. An overview of the synthetic aspects, structural properties and intriguing reactivity of these two new classes of transition metal complexes is presented.

Bioinspired Binickel Catalyst for Carbon Dioxide Reduction: The Importance of Metal-ligand Cooperation

Catalyst design for the efficient CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) remains a crucial challenge for the conversion of CO2 to fuels. Natural Ni-Fe carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (NiFe-CODH) achieves reversible conversion of CO2 and CO at nearly thermodynamic equilibrium potential, which provides a template for developing CO2RR catalysts. However, compared with the natural enzyme, most biomimetic synthetic Ni-Fe complexes exhibit negligible CO2RR catalytic activities, which emphasizes the significance of effective bimetallic cooperation for CO2 activation. Enlightened by bimetallic synergy, we herein report a dinickel complex, NiIINiII(bphpp)(AcO)2 (where NiNi(bphpp) is derived from H2bphpp = 2,9-bis(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-3-pyridylphenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline) for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO, which exhibits a remarkable reactivity approximately 5 times higher than that of the mononuclear Ni catalyst. Electrochemical and computational studies have revealed that the redox-active phenanthroline moiety effectively modulates the electron injection and transfer akin to the [Fe3S4] cluster in NiFe-CODH, and the secondary Ni site facilitates the C-O bond activation and cleavage through electron mediation and Lewis acid characteristics. Our work underscores the significant role of bimetallic cooperation in CO2 reduction catalysis and provides valuable guidance for the rational design of CO2RR catalysts.

Generation and Reactivity of Polychalcogenide Chains in Binuclear Cobalt(II) Complexes

A series of six binuclear Co(II)-thiolate complexes, [Co2(BPMP)(S-C6H4-o-X)2]1+ (X = OMe, 2; NH2, 3), [Co2(BPMP)(μ-S-C6H4-o-O)]1+ (4), and [Co2(BPMP)(μ-Y)]1+ (Y = bdt, 5; tdt, 6; mnt, 7), has been synthesized from [Co2(BPMP)(MeOH)2(Cl)2]1+ (1a) and [Co2(BPMP)(Cl)2]1+ (1b), where BPMP1- is the anion of 2,6-bis[[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]methyl]-4-methylphenol. While 2 and 3 could allow the two-electron redox reaction of the two coordinated thiolates with elemental sulfur (S8) to generate [Co2(BPMP)(μ-S5)]1+ (8), the complexes, 4-7, could not undergo a similar reaction. An analogous redox reaction of 2 with elemental selenium ([Se]) produced [{Co2(BPMP)(μ-Se4)}{Co2(BPMP)(μ-Se3)}]2+ (9a) and [Co2(BPMP)(μ-Se4)]1+ (9b). Further reaction of these polychalcogenido complexes, 8 and 9a/9b, with PPh3 allowed the isolation of [Co2(BPMP)(μ-S)]1+ (10) and [Co2(BPMP)(μ-Se2)]1+ (11), which, in turn, could be converted back to 8 and 9a upon treatment with S8 and [Se], respectively. Interestingly, while the redox reaction of the polyselenide chains in 9a and 11 with S8 produced 8 and [Se], the treatment of 8 with [Se] gave back only the starting material (8), thus demonstrating the different redox behavior of sulfur and selenium. Furthermore, the reaction of 8 and 9a/9b with activated alkynes and cyanide (CN-) allowed the isolation of the complexes, [Co2(BPMP)(μ-E2C2(CO2R)2)]1+ (E = S: 12a, R = Me; 12b, R = Et; E = Se: 13a, R = Me; 13b, R = Et) and [Co2(BPMP)(μ-SH)(NCS)2] (14), respectively. The present work, thus, provides an interesting synthetic strategy, interconversions, and detailed comparative reactivity of binuclear Co(II)-polychalcogenido complexes.

Redox-Active Ligand Assisted Multielectron Catalysis: A Case of Electrocatalyzed CO2-to-CO Conversion

The selective reduction of carbon dioxide remains a significant challenge due to the complex multielectron/proton transfer process, which results in a high kinetic barrier and the production of diverse products. Inspired by the electrostatic and H-bonding interactions observed in the second sphere of the [NiFe]-CODH enzyme, researchers have extensively explored these interactions to regulate proton transfer, stabilize intermediates, and ultimately improve the performance of catalytic CO2 reduction. In this work, a series of cobalt(II) tetraphenylporphyrins with varying numbers of redox-active nitro groups were synthesized and evaluated as CO2 reduction electrocatalysts. Analyses of the redox properties of these complexes revealed a consistent relationship between the number of nitro groups and the corresponding accepted electron number of the ligand at -1.59 V vs. Fc+/0. Among the catalysts tested, TNPPCo with four nitro groups exhibited the most efficient catalytic activity with a turnover frequency of 4.9 × 104 s-1 and a catalytic onset potential 820 mV more positive than that of the parent TPPCo. Furthermore, the turnover frequencies of the catalysts increased with a higher number of nitro groups. These results demonstrate the promising design strategy of incorporating multielectron redox-active ligands into CO2 reduction catalysts to enhance catalytic performance.

Combining [MoVIO3] and [M0(CO)3] (M = Mo, Cr) Fragments within the Same Complex: Synthesis and Reactivity of the Single Oxo-Bridged Heterobimetallics Supported by Xanthene-Based Heterodinucleating Ligands

A functional model of Mo-Cu carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) enzyme requires the presence of an oxidant (metal-oxo) and a metal-bound carbonyl in close proximity. In this work, we report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a heterobimetallic complex combining Mo(VI) trioxo with Mo(0) tricarbonyl. The formation of the heterobimetallic complex is facilitated by the xanthene-bridged heterodinucleating ligand containing a hard catecholate chelate and a soft iminopyridine chelate. A catechol-coordinated square-pyramidal [MoVIO3] fragment interacts directly with the iminopyridine-bound [Mo0(CO)3] fragment via a single (oxo) bridge, with the overall disposition being related to the proposed first step in the CODH mechanism, where square-pyramidal [MoVIO2S] interacts with the [Cu-CO] via a single sulfido bridge. Our attempt to obtain a sulfido-bridged analogue (using [MoO3S]2- precursor) led to a mixture of products possibly containing different (oxo and sulfido) bridges. Despite a direct interaction between Mo(VI) and Mo(0) segments, no internal redox is observed, with the high lying occupied MOs being mostly d-π orbitals at Mo0(CO)3 and the low lying unoccupied MOs being d-π orbitals at MoVIO3. Due to the overall rigid structure, the heterobimetallic complex was found to be stable up to 100 °C in DMF-d7 (based on 1H NMR). The decomposition of the complex above this temperature does not produce CO2 (based on gas chromatography), dissociating stable Mo(CO)3(DMF)3 instead (based on IR). We also synthesized and studied the reactivity of the Mo(VI)/Cr(0) analogue. While this complex demonstrated more facile decomposition, no CO2 production was observed. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the formation of [CO2]2- and its subsequent reductive elimination is endergonic in the present system, likely due to the stability of fac-Mo0(CO)3 and the relative nucleophilic character of the carbonyl carbon engendered by back donation from Mo(0). The calculations also indicate that the replacement of one oxo by sulfido (both terminal and bridging), replacement of catechol with dithiolene, and replacement of Mo(0) with Cr(0) does not affect significantly the energetics of the process, likely requiring the use a less stable and less π-basic CO anchor.

Studies Relevant to the Functional Model of Mo-Cu CODH: In Situ Reactions of Cu(I)-L Complexes with Mo(VI) and Synthesis of Stable Structurally Characterized Heterotetranuclear MoVI2CuI2 Complex

In this study, we report the synthesis, characterization, and reactions of Cu(I) complexes of the general form Cu(L)(LigH₂) (LigH₂ = xanthene-based heterodinucleating ligand (E)-3-(((5-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethyl-9H-xanthen-4-yl)imino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol); L = PMe₃, PPh₃, CN(2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)). New complexes [Cu(PMe₃)(LigH₂)] and [CuCN(2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)(LigH₂)] were synthesized by treating [Cu(LigH₂)](PF₆) with trimethylphosphine and 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide, respectively. These complexes were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and X-ray crystallography. In contrast, attempted reactions of [Cu(LigH₂)](PF₆) with cyanide or styrene failed to produce isolable crystalline products. Next, the reactivity of these and previously synthesized Cu(I) phosphine and isocyanide complexes with molybdate was interrogated. IR (for isocyanide) and ³¹P NMR (for PPh₃/PMe₃) spectroscopy demonstrates the lack of oxidation reactivity. We also describe herein the first example of a structurally characterized multinuclear complex combining both Mo(VI) and Cu(I) metal ions within the same system. The heterobimetallic tetranuclear complex [Cu₂Mo₂O₄(μ₂-O)(Lig)₂]·HOSiPh₃ was obtained by the reaction of the silylated Mo(VI) precursor (Et₄N)(MoO₃(OSiPh₃)) with LigH₂, followed by the addition of [Cu(NCMe)₄](PF₆). This complex was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography.

Azo-oximate metal-carbonyl to metallocarboxylic acid via the intermediate Ir(III) radical congener: quest for co-ligand driven stability of open- and closed-shell complexes

The redox non-innocent behavior of the diaryl-azo-oxime ligand L^NOH1 has been accentuated via the synthesis of metastable anion radical complexes of type trans-[Ir(L^NO˙-)Cl(CO)(PPh₃)₂] 2 (CO is trans to azo group of the ligand) by the oxidative coordination reaction of 1 with Vaska's complex. The stereochemical role of co-ligands vis-à-vis the interplay of π-bonding has been found to be decisive in controlling the aptitude of the coordinated redox non-innocent ligand to accept or reject an electron. This has been clarified via the isolation of quite a few complexes as well as the failure to synthesize some others. The oxidized analogues of type trans-[Ir(L^NO-)Cl(CO)(PPh₃)₂]⁺2+ (CO and azo group of the ligand are trans) as well as its cis isomer cis-[Ir(L^NO-)Cl(CO)(PPh₃)₂]⁺3+ (CO and azo group of the ligand are cis) have been structurally characterized but the radical anion congener of the latter could not be synthesized. Furthermore, the closed shell complexes [Ir(L^NO-)Cl₂(PPh₃)₂] 4 and [Ir(L^NO-)₂Cl(PPh₃)] 5 have been well characterized by diffraction as well as spectral techniques but their corresponding azo anion radical complexes could not be isolated and this is attributed to the trans influence of ancillary ligands. The anion radical complexes trans-[Ir(L^NO˙-)Cl(CO)(PPh₃)₂] 2 may be rapidly transformed to the metallocarboxylic acids trans-[Ir(L^NO-)Cl(CO₂H)(PPh₃)₂] 6via a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process, thereby demonstrating the role of odd electron over the coordinated ligand framework to trigger metal-mediated carbonyl to carboxylic acid functionalization. Complexes 6 are further stabilized via intramolecular -CO₂H⋯ON- (carboxylic acid⋯oximato) H-bonding. The optoelectronic properties as well as the origin of transitions in the complexes were analyzed by TD-DFT and theoretical analysis, which further disclose that the odd electron in trans-[Ir(L^NO˙-)Cl(CO)(PPh₃)₂] 2 is primarily azo-oxime centric with very low contribution from the iridium center.

An asymmetric cryptand for the site-specific coordination of 3d metals in multiple oxidation states

Bis-tren (tren = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine) azacryptands were previously studied profoundly for the coordination of two +II metals and subsequent binding of substrates within their cavity. Likewise, cryptates including metals in different oxidations states were reported with the rather unstable hexa-imine analogues but also revealed only little stability. In this work, we report the synthesis of an asymmetric hexa-amine cryptand analogue by selectively exchanging three of the secondary amines of one binding site with sulphur atoms. We show that the presence of two distinct binding sites allows for the selective formation of stable dinuclear complexes of metals with different oxidation numbers and present the formation of distinct Cu^ICo^II, Cu^INi^II and Cu^ICuI^II cryptates.

Synthesis and Cu(I)/Mo(VI) Reactivity of a Bifunctional Heterodinucleating Ligand on a Xanthene Platform

In an effort to probe the feasibility of a model of Mo-Cu CODH (CODH = carbon monoxide dehydrogenase) lacking a bridging sulfido group, the new heterodinucleating ligand LH₂ was designed and its Cu(I)/Mo(VI) reactivity was investigated. LH₂ ((E)-3-(((5-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethyl-9H-xanthen-4-yl)imino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol) features two different chelating positions bridged by a xanthene linker: bis(pyridyl)amine for Cu(I) and catecholate for Mo(VI). LH₂ was synthesized via the initial protection of one of the amine positions, followed by two consecutive alkylations of the second position, deprotection, and condensation to attach the catechol functionality. LH₂ was found to exhibit dynamic cooperativity between two reactive sites mediated by H-bonding of the catechol protons. In the free ligand, catechol protons exhibit H-bonding with imine (intramolecular) and with pyridine (intermolecular in the solid state). The reaction of LH₂ with [Cu(NCMe)₄]⁺ led to the tetradentate coordination of Cu(I) via all nitrogen donors of the ligand, including the imine. Cu(I) complexes were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), X-ray crystallography, and DFT calculations. Cu(I) coordination to the imine disrupted H-bonding and caused rotation away from the catechol arm. The reaction of the Cu(I) complex [Cu(LH₂)]⁺ with a variety of monodentate ligands X (PPh₃, Cl^-, SCN^-, CN^-) released the metal from coordination to the imine, thereby restoring imine H-bonding with the catechol proton. The second catechol proton engages in H-bonding with Cu-X (X = Cl, CN, SCN), which can be intermolecular (XRD) or intramolecular (DFT). The reaction of LH₂ with molybdate [MoO₄]^2- led to incorporation of [Mo^VIO₃] at the catecholate position, producing [MoO₃(L)]^2-. Similarly, the reaction of [Cu(LH₂)]⁺ with [MoO₄]^2- formed the heterodinuclear complex [CuMoO₃(L)]^-. Both complexes were characterized by multinuclear NMR, UV-vis, and HRMS. HRMS in both cases confirmed the constitution of the complexes, containing molecular ions with the expected isotopic distribution.

Reversible Electron Transfer and Substrate Binding Support [NiFe3S4] Ferredoxin as a Protein-Based Model for [NiFe] Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenase

The nickel-iron carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) enzyme catalyzes the reversible and selective interconversion of carbon dioxide (CO₂) to carbon monoxide (CO) with high rates and negligible overpotential. Despite decades of research, many questions remain about this complex metalloenzyme system. A simplified model enzyme could provide substantial insight into biological carbon cycling. Here, we demonstrate reversible electron transfer and binding of both CO and cyanide, a substrate and an inhibitor of CODH, respectively, in a Pyrococcus furiosus (Pf) ferredoxin (Fd) protein that has been reconstituted with a nickel-iron sulfide cluster ([NiFe₃S₄] Fd). The [NiFe₃S₄] cluster mimics the core of the native CODH active site and thus serves as a protein-based structural model of the CODH subsite. Notably, despite binding cyanide, no CO binding is observed for the physiological [Fe₄S₄] clusters in Pf Fd, providing chemical rationale underlying the evolution of a site-differentiated cluster for substrate conversion in native CODH. The demonstration of a substrate-binding metalloprotein model of CODH sets the stage for high-resolution spectroscopic and mechanistic studies correlating the subsite structure and function, ultimately guiding the design of anthropogenic catalysts that harness the advantages of CODH for effective CO₂ reduction.

Residues surrounding the active centre of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase are key in converting [Formula: see text] to CO

The enzyme carbon monoxide dehydrogenase is capable of efficiently converting [Formula: see text] to CO and, therefore, can enable an affordable [Formula: see text] recycling strategy. The reduction of [Formula: see text] occurs at a peculiar nickel-iron-sulfur cluster, following a mechanism that remains little understood. In this study, we have used ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to explore the free energy landscape of the reaction. We predict the existence of a COOH ligand that strongly interacts with the surrounding protein residues and favours a mechanism where a [Formula: see text] molecule is eliminated before CO. We have taken advantages of the insights offered by our simulations to revisit the catalytic mechanism and the role of the residues surrounding the active centre in particular, thus assisting in the design of inorganic catalysts that mimic the enzyme.

Thiolate Coordination vs C-S Bond Cleavage of Thiolates in Dinickel(II) Complexes

A detailed study for the synthesis of dinickel(II)-thiolate and dinickel(II)-hydrosulfide complexes and the complete characterization of the relevant intermediates involved in the C-S bond cleavage of thiolates are presented. Hydrated Ni(II) salts mediate the hydrolytic C-S bond cleavage of thiolates (NaSR/RSH; R = Me, Et, ⁿBu, ^tBu), albeit inefficiently, to yield a mixture of a dinickel(II)-hydrosulfide complex, [Ni₂(BPMP)(μ-SH)(DMF)₂]²⁺ (1), and the corresponding dinickel(II)-thiolate complexes, such as [Ni₂(BPMP)(μ-SEt)(ClO₄)]¹⁺ (2) (HBPMP is 2,6-bis[[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]methyl]-4-methylphenol). A systematic study for the reactivity of thiolates with Ni(II) was therefore pursued which finally yielded 1 as a pure product which has been characterized in comparison with the dinickel(II)-dichloride complex, [Ni₂(BPMP)(Cl)₂(MeOH)₂]¹⁺ (3). While the reaction of thiolates with anhydrous Ni(OTf)₂ in dry conditions could only yield [Ni₂(BPMP)(OTf)₂]¹⁺ (5) instead of the expected dinickel(II)-thiolate compound, the C-S bond cleavage could be suppressed by the use of a chelating thiol, such as PhCOSH, to yield [Ni₂(BPMP)(SCOPh)₂]¹⁺ (6). Finally, with the suitable choice of a monodentate thiol, a dinickel(II)-monothiolate complex, [Ni₂(BPMP)(SPh)(DMF)(MeOH)(H₂O)]²⁺ (7), was isolated as a pure product within 1 h of reaction, which after a longer time of reaction yielded 1 and PhOH. Complex 7 may thus be regarded as the intermediate that precedes the C-S bond cleavage and is generated by the reaction of a thiolate with an initially formed dinickel(II)-solvento complex, [Ni₂(BPMP)(MeOH)₂(H₂O)₂]³⁺(4). Selected dinickel(II) complexes were explored further for the scope of substitution reactions, and the results include the isolation of a dinickel(II)-bis(thiolate) complex, [Ni₂(BPMP)(μ-SPh)₂]¹⁺ (8).

Bioinspired Nickel Complexes Supported by an Iron Metalloligand

Nature utilizes multimetallic sites in metalloenzymes to enable multielectron chemical transformations at ambient conditions and low overpotentials. One such example of multimetallic cooperativity can be found in the C-cluster of Ni-carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH), which interconverts CO and CO₂. Toward a potential functional model of the C-cluster, a family of Ni-Fe bimetallic complexes was synthesized that contain direct metal-metal bonding interactions. The complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, various spectroscopies (NMR, EPR, UV-vis, Mössbauer), and theoretical calculations. The Ni-Fe bimetallic system has a reversible Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couple at -2.10 V (vs Fc⁺/Fc). The Fe-based "redox switch" can turn on CO₂ reactivity at the Ni(0) center by leveraging the Ni→Fe dative interaction to attenuate the Ni(0) electron density. The reduced Ni(0)Fe(II) species mediated the formal two-electron reduction of CO₂ to CO, providing a Ni-CO adduct and CO₃^2- as products. During the reaction, an intermediate was observed that is proposed to be a Ni-CO₂ species.

A W/Cu Synthetic Model for the Mo/Cu Cofactor of Aerobic CODH Indicates That Biochemical CO Oxidation Requires a Frustrated Lewis Acid/Base Pair

Constructing synthetic models of the Mo/Cu active site of aerobic carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) has been a long-standing synthetic challenge thought to be crucial for understanding how atmospheric concentrations of CO and CO₂ are regulated in the global carbon cycle by chemolithoautotrophic bacteria and archaea. Here we report a W/Cu complex that is among the closest synthetic mimics constructed to date, enabled by a silyl protection/deprotection strategy that provided access to a kinetically stabilized complex with mixed O^2-/S^2- ligation between (bdt)(O)W^VI and Cu^I(NHC) (bdt = benzene dithiolate, NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) sites. Differences between the inorganic core's structural and electronic features outside the protein environment relative to the native CODH cofactor point to a biochemical CO oxidation mechanism that requires a strained active site geometry, with Lewis acid/base frustration enforced by the protein secondary structure. This new mechanistic insight has the potential to inform synthetic design strategies for multimetallic energy storage catalysts.

Thermodynamic Considerations for Optimizing Selective CO2 Reduction by Molecular Catalysts

Energetically efficient electrocatalysts with high product selectivity are desirable targets for sustainable chemical fuel generation using renewable electricity. Recycling CO₂ by reduction to more energy dense products would support a carbon-neutral cycle that mitigates the intermittency of renewable energy sources. Conversion of CO₂ to more saturated products typically requires proton equivalents. Complications with product selectivity stem from competitive reactions between H⁺ or CO₂ at shared intermediates. We describe generalized catalytic cycles for H₂, CO, and HCO₂ ^- formation that are commonly proposed in inorganic molecular catalysts. Thermodynamic considerations and trends for the reactions of H⁺ or CO₂ at key intermediates are outlined. A quantitative understanding of intermediate catalytic steps is key to designing systems that display high selectivity while promoting energetically efficient catalysis by minimizing the overall energy landscape. For CO₂ reduction to CO, we describe how an enzymatic active site motif facilitates efficient and selective catalysis and highlight relevant examples from synthetic systems.

Electro- and Solar-Driven Fuel Synthesis with First Row Transition Metal Complexes

The synthesis of renewable fuels from abundant water or the greenhouse gas CO2 is a major step toward creating sustainable and scalable energy storage technologies. In the last few decades, much attention has focused on the development of nonprecious metal-based catalysts and, in more recent years, their integration in solid-state support materials and devices that operate in water. This review surveys the literature on 3d metal-based molecular catalysts and focuses on their immobilization on heterogeneous solid-state supports for electro-, photo-, and photoelectrocatalytic synthesis of fuels in aqueous media. The first sections highlight benchmark homogeneous systems using proton and CO2 reducing 3d transition metal catalysts as well as commonly employed methods for catalyst immobilization, including a discussion of supporting materials and anchoring groups. The subsequent sections elaborate on productive associations between molecular catalysts and a wide range of substrates based on carbon, quantum dots, metal oxide surfaces, and semiconductors. The molecule-material hybrid systems are organized as "dark" cathodes, colloidal photocatalysts, and photocathodes, and their figures of merit are discussed alongside system stability and catalyst integrity. The final section extends the scope of this review to prospects and challenges in targeting catalysis beyond "classical" H2 evolution and CO2 reduction to C1 products, by summarizing cases for higher-value products from N2 reduction, C x>1 products from CO2 utilization, and other reductive organic transformations.

Biomimetic Approach to CO2 Reduction

The development of artificial photosynthetic technologies able to produce solar-fuels from CO₂ reduction is a fundamental task that requires the employment of specific catalysts being accomplished. Besides, effective catalysts are also demanded to capture atmospheric CO₂, mitigating the effects of its constantly increasing emission. Biomimetic transition metal complexes are considered ideal platforms to develop efficient and selective catalysts to be implemented in electrocatalytic and photocatalytic devices. These catalysts, designed according to the inspiration provided by nature, are simple synthetic molecular systems capable of mimic features of the enzymatic activity. The present review aims to focus the attention on the mechanistic and structural aspects highlighted to be necessary to promote a proper catalytic activity. The determination of these characteristics is of interest both for clarifying aspects of the catalytic cycle of natural enzymes that are still unknown and for developing synthetic molecular catalysts that can readily be applied to artificial photosynthetic devices.

An internal electron reservoir enhances catalytic CO2 reduction by a semisynthetic enzyme

The development of an artificial metalloenzyme for CO2 reduction is described. The small-molecule catalyst [Ni(II)(cyclam)](2+) has been incorporated within azurin. Selectivity for CO generation over H(+) reduction is enhanced within the protein environment, while the azurin active site metal impacts the electrochemical overpotential and photocatalytic activity. The enhanced catalysis observed for copper azurin suggests an important role for intramolecular electron transfer, analogous to native CO2 reducing enzymes.

From Enzymes to Functional Materials-Towards Activation of Small Molecules

The design of non-noble metal-containing heterogeneous catalysts for the activation of small molecules is of utmost importance for our society. While nature possesses very sophisticated machineries to perform such conversions, rationally designed catalytic materials are rare. Herein, we aim to raise the awareness of the overall common design and working principles of catalysts incorporating aspects of biology, chemistry, and material sciences.
