Mononuclear Oxidovanadium(IV) Complexes with BIAN Ligands: Synthesis and Catalytic Activity in the Oxidation of Hydrocarbons and Alcohols with Peroxides

Reactions of VCl3 with 1,2-Bis[(4-methylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene (4-Me-C6H4-bian) or 1,2-Bis[(2-methylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene (2-Me-C6H4-bian) in air lead to the formation of [VOCl2(R-bian)(H2O)] (R = 4-Me-C6H4 (1), 2-Me-C6H4 (2)). Thes complexes were characterized by IR and EPR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis. Complexes 1 and 2 have high catalytic activity in the oxidation of hydrocarbons with hydrogen peroxide and alcohols with tert-butyl hydroperoxide in acetonitrile at 50 °С. The product yields are up to 40% for cyclohexane. Of particular importance is the addition of 2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid (PCA) as a co-catalyst. Oxidation proceeds mainly with the participation of free hydroxyl radicals, as evidenced by taking into account the regio- and bond-selectivity in the oxidation of n-heptane and methylcyclohexane, as well as the dependence of the reaction rate on the initial concentration of cyclohexane.

Thermally stable vanadium complexes supported by the iminophenyl oxazolinylphenylamine ligands: synthesis, characterization and application for ethylene (co-)polymerization

In this work, a series of oxovanadium complexes bearing the ligands (S,E)-(+)-2, 6-dialkyl-N-(2-((2-(4-isopropyl-4,5-dihydrooxazole-2-yl)phenyl)amino)benzylidene)aniline (dialkyl = dimethyl (V1), diethyl (V2), and isopropyl (V3)) have been synthesized and characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Moreover, the molecular structures of complexes V2 and V3 were defined by X-ray diffraction. On activation with ethylaluminium sesquichloride (Al₂Et₃Cl₃), these complexes exhibited high activity towards ethylene polymerization (up to 1.39 × 10⁷ g mol_v^-1 h^-1) and showed excellent thermal stability (up to 60 °C). The obtained polyethylene had a moderate molecular weight (21.9 × 10⁴ to 66.4 × 10⁴ g mol^-1) and exhibited narrow distribution (1.91 to 2.86) and unimodal features. The effect of the substituents on the ligands was also investigated in detail. The compound bearing the diisopropyl group showed the highest activity toward ethylene polymerization as the bimolecular deactivation of the catalyst can be effectively inhibited by the steric hindrance of the ortho-substituent on aniline. The complex V2 with moderate steric hindrance was also evaluated as a catalyst for the copolymerization of ethylene with norbornene and showed moderate to high activity.

Structural and Thermal Properties of Ethylene-Norbornene Copolymers Obtained Using Vanadium Homogeneous and SIL Catalysts

The series of ethylene-norbornene (E-NB) copolymers was obtained using different vanadium homogeneous and supported ionic liquid (SIL) catalyst systems. The ¹³C and ¹H NMR (carbon and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) together with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were applied to determine the composition of copolymers such as comonomer incorporation (C_NB), monomer dispersity (MD), monomer reactivity ratio (r_e), sequence length of ethylene (l_e) and tetrad microblock distributions. The relation between the type of catalyst, reaction conditions and on the other hand, the copolymer microstructure, chain termination reaction analyzed by the type of unsaturation are discussed. In addition, the thermal properties of E-NB copolymers such as the melting and crystallization behavior, like also the heterogeneity of composition described by successive the self-nucleation and annealing (SSA) and the dispersity index (DI) were determined.

Scrabbling around in Synthetic Nuances Managing Sodium Compounds: Bisphenol/Bisnaphthol Synthesis by Hydroxyl Group Masking

A unique method of bisphenol/bisnaphthol synthesis is being proposed, serendipitously discovered in the course of the careful analysis of an aminophenol methylation reaction. The insightful exploration of the synthesis of N- or O-methylated species, originating from functionalized phenols obtained by a conventional strategy, provided the opportunity to discover an unexpected reaction pathway yielding various bisphenols. Sodium complexes were found to be crucial intermediates in the synthetic scenario. Their formation, which is usually an imperceptive step, was substantial for the productive outcome of functional group protection. Thorough exploration revealed an essential structural motif of aminophenolate, necessary for the successful outcome of the reaction, and also enabled establishing the limitations of the new method. The work demonstrated that a slight change in the perspective and close inspection of the synthetic nuances can answer the important question concerning what a specific target-oriented synthesis strategy is lacking.

The protection of the hydroxyl group of aminophenols with use of MeI—a general and, in many cases, excellent methylation reagent—was investigated. In-depth understanding of the mechanistic aspects of methyl protective group incorporation provided a practical guide for its application in organic synthesis, but it also opened a new route for the synthesis of an original group of bisphenols.

Homo- and Copolymerization of Ethylene with Norbornene Catalyzed by Vanadium(III) Phosphine Complexes

Herein, we report the homo- and co-polymerization of ethylene (E) with norbornene (NB) catalyzed by vanadium(III) phosphine complexes of the type VCl₃(PMe_nPh_3-n)₂ [n = 2 (1a), 1 (1b)] and VCl₃(PR₃)₂ [R = phenyl (Ph, 1c), cyclohexyl (Cy, 1d), tert-butyl (tBu, 1e)]. In the presence of Et₂AlCl and Cl₃CCOOEt (ETA), 1a-1e exhibit good activities for the polymerization of ethylene, affording linear, semicrystalline PEs with a melting temperature of approximately 130 °C. Mainly alternating copolymers with high comonomer incorporation were obtained in the E/NB copolymerization. A relationship was found between the electronic and steric properties of the phosphine ligands and the catalytic performance. Overall, the presence of electron-withdrawing ligand substituents increases the productivity, complexes with aryl phosphine (weaker σ-donor character) exhibiting a higher (co)polymerization initiation rate than those with alkyl phosphines (stronger σ-donor character). Steric effects also seem to play a key role since 1d and 1e, having large size phosphines (PCy₃ θ = 170° and PtBu₃ θ = 182°, respectively) are more active than 1a (PMe₂Ph θ = 122°). In this case, the larger size of PtBu₃ and PCy₃ likely compensates for their higher donor strength compared to PMe₂Ph.

Facile, Efficient Copolymerization of Ethylene with Norbornene-Containing Dienes Promoted by Single Site Non-Metallocene Oxovanadium(V) Catalytic System

Non-metallocene oxovanadium(V) complexes bearing either [ONNO]-type amine pyridine bis(phenolate) ligands or [ONN]-type amine pyridine phenolate ligands were employed as efficient catalysts to copolymerize ethylene with several unsymmetrical norbornene-containing dienes, such as 5-vinyl-2-norbornene (VNB), 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB) or dicyclopentadiene (DCPD), producing copolymers with high comonomer incorporations (VNB: 33.0 mol %; ENB: 30.4 mol %; DCPD: 31.6 mol %, respectively) and high molecular weight (VNB: 86.4 kDa; ENB: 256 kDa; DCPD: 86.4 kDa, respectively). The enchainment of the dienes was proven to be exclusive of vinyl-addition via the C=C double bond of the norbornene ring while the other double bond was retained near the backbone without crosslinking. During the copolymerization of ethylene with ENB, a positive ‘comonomer effect’ was observed. The catalytic activities of the catalysts as well as the molecular weights and comonomer incorporations of the resultant copolymers could be tuned within a wide range by varying the structures of the catalysts and copolymerization conditions. The [ONN]-type oxovanadium(V) complexes showed higher catalytic activities than those of [ONNO]-type oxovanadium(V) complexes, irrespective of the structure of the dienes. In addition, the dominant chain transfer pathway of the non-metallocene oxovanadium(V) catalytic system promoted copolymerization was proven to be transfer to aluminum compounds.

Isoprene polymerization mediated by vanadium-[ONNO] complexes

Vanadium complexes with amine-bis(phenolate) [ONNO] ligands catalyze the polymerization of isoprene when activated with AlⁱBu₃.

Vanadium(V) complexes of a tripodal ligand, their characterisation and biological implications

The reaction of the tripodal tetradentate dibasic ligand 6,6'-(2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylazanediyl)bis(methylene)bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenol), H2L(1)I, with [V(IV)O(acac)2] in CH3CN gives the V(V)O-complex, [V(V)O(acac)(L(1))] 1. Crystallisation of 1 in CH3CN at ∼0 °C gives dark blue crystals of 1, while at room temperature it affords dark green crystals of [{V(V)O(L(1))}2μ-O] 3. Upon prolonged treatment of 1 in MeOH, [V(V)O(OMe)(MeOH)(L(1))] 2 is obtained. All three complexes were analysed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, depicting a distorted octahedral geometry around vanadium. In the reaction of H2L(1) with V(IV)OSO4 partial hydrolysis of the tripodal ligand results in the elimination of the pyridyl fragment of L(1) and the formation of H[V(V)O2(L(2))] 4 containing the ONO tridentate ligand 6,6'-azanediylbis(methylene)bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenol), H2L(2)II. Compound 4, which was not fully characterised, undergoes dimerization in acetone yielding the hydroxido-bridged [{V(V)O(L(2))}2μ-(OH)2] 5 having a distorted octahedral geometry around each vanadium. In contrast, from a solution of 4 in acetonitrile, the dinuclear compound [{V(V)O(L(2))}2μ-O] 6 is obtained, with a trigonal bipyramidal geometry around each vanadium. The methoxido complex 2 is successfully employed as a functional catechol-oxidase mimic in the oxidation of catechol to o-quinone under air. The process was confirmed to follow a Michaelis-Menten type kinetics with respect to catechol, the Vmax and KM values obtained being 7.66 × 10(-6) M min(-1) and 0.0557 M, respectively, and the turnover frequency is 0.0541 min(-1). A similar reaction with the bulkier 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol proceeded at a much slower rate. Complex 2 was also used as a catalyst precursor for the oxidative bromination of thymol in aqueous medium. The selectivity shows quite interesting trends, namely when not using excess of the primary oxidizing agent, H2O2, the para mono-brominated product corresponds to ∼93% of the products and no dibromo derivative is formed.
