A novel μ3-CO3 bridged linear polymeric Cu-complex ([Cu3(DMAP)8(μ3-CO3)2]I2) n ·xH2O: synthesis, characterization and catalytic applications in the synthesis of phenoxypyrimidines and arylthiopyrimidines via C-O and C-S cross-coupling reactions

This manuscript reports on the synthesis and characterization of a new polymeric copper complex ([Cu3(DMAP)8(μ3-CO3)2]I2) n ·xH2O and its successful application in C-O and C-S cross coupling reactions for the synthesis of biologically important phenoxypyrimidine and arylthiopyrimidine scaffolds. In an attempt to synthesize [Cu(DMAP)4I]I by adopting a procedure reported by Roy et al. with slight modification, the authors discovered a new polymeric Cu-complex that contains μ3-CO3 bridges. The polymeric linear structure of the complex was established using single crystal X-ray analysis. FT-IR, UV-vis and DSC studies were also performed on the polymeric complex. This novel polymeric Cu-complex was found to efficiently catalyse C-O/C-S cross coupling reactions between chloropyrimidines and phenols/thiophenols in an aqueous medium within a short reaction time, delivering their corresponding phenoxypyrimidines and arylthiopyrimidines. Using this protocol, 22 phenoxypyrimidines and 6 arylthiopyrimidines were successfully synthesized. The synthesized novel compounds were well characterized using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and HRMS analysis and were screened for their drug-likeness properties using the SwissADME webtool.

Green carbon-carbon homocoupling of terminal alkynes by a silica supported Cu(II)-hydrazone coordination compound

A Cu(II) complex, [Cu(HL)(NO₃)(CH₃OH)]·CH₃OH (1), was obtained by the reaction of Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O and H2L in methanol solvent (H2L is (E)-4-amino-N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide). H2L and compound 1 were characterized by various spectroscopic analyses and the molecular structure of [Cu(HL)(NO₃)(CH₃OH)]·CH₃OH was determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The results indicated the product is a mononuclear Cu(II) complex and contains a free NH₂ functional group on the structure of the ligand. [Cu(HL)(NO₃)(CH₃OH)]·CH₃OH was used for the preparation of a heterogeneous catalyst by supporting it on functionalized silica gel. The heterogeneous catalyst (Si-Cu) was prepared by an amidification reaction of [Cu(HL)(NO₃)(CH₃OH)]·CH₃OH with functionalized silica gel. The resulting silica-supported catalyst (Si-Cu) was characterized by TGA, FT-IR, EPR, DRS, EDS, XRD, SEM and XPS analyses. Si-Cu was employed in a carbon-carbon coupling reaction and the effects of the amount of Si-Cu and temperature were investigated in the catalytic coupling. The structure of one of the products of the catalytic reactions (C₁₆H₂₂O₂, CP1) was determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis, which proved the formation of a C-C bond and the production of di-acetylene by homocoupling of terminal alkyne. This catalytic system is stable and it can be reused for a coupling reaction without a significant change in its catalytic activity.

An Introduction to the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectral Library of Pigments

A library cataloguing the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of artists’ pigments has been created. It contains spectral data collected using several spectrometers that operate at different frequencies for, currently, 51 pigments. The library is intended to serve as an open-access reference database for the scientific studies of cultural heritage objects that utilize this analytical technique. Furthermore, it is a living repository, in that entries will be added as more pigments found to have EPR signals at room temperature are studied. Because EPR is less well established in the field of heritage science than some other common spectroscopies, this companion paper serves as an educational supplement to the library. It focuses on first, describing the theory of EPR to the level necessary to understand the origins of spectral features and to utilize these for pigment identification, and then, on discussing the organization of the library to facilitate the navigation of its contents.

Green solvent free epoxidation of olefins by a heterogenised hydrazone-dioxidotungsten(vi) coordination compound

A new mononuclear tungsten coordination compound, [WO₂L(CH₃OH)] (1), was synthesized by the reaction of WCl₆ and H₂L (H₂L = (E)-4-amino-N′-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide) in methanol. Both the H₂L and compound 1 were characterized by elemental analysis and UV-Vis, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic methods. The molecular structure of compound 1 was also determined by single crystal X-ray analysis which confirmed the compound is a mononuclear coordination compound of cis-dioxidotungsten(vi) containing a free amine functionality on the ligand. Compound 1 was supported on propionyl chloride-functionalized silica gel by amidification reaction to obtain a heterogeneous catalyst. The obtained heterogeneous catalyst was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and its catalytic activity was investigated in the epoxidation of olefins with hydrogen peroxide under solvent free conditions. The catalyst was successfully recovered several times and the recovered catalyst was also characterized by various methods including FT-IR, DRS, TGA, SEM and EDX analyses. The results indicated this heterogeneous catalytic system is an effective and selective catalyst for epoxidation of olefins and can be reused several times without significant change in its catalytic activity.

Synthesis, Study, and Application of Pd(II) Hydrazone Complexes as the Emissive Components of Single-Layer Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

For the first time, square planar Pd(II) complexes of hydrazone ligands have been investigated as the emissive components of light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The neutral transition metal complex, [Pd(L¹)₂]·2CH₃OH (1), (HL¹ = (E)-N'-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)isonicotinhydrazide), was prepared and structurally characterized. Complex 1 displays quasireversible redox properties and is emissive at room temperature in solution with a λ_max of 590 nm. As a result, it was subsequently employed as the emissive material of a single-layer LEC with configuration FTO/1/Ga/In, where studies reveal that it has a yellow color with CIE(x, y) = (0.33, 0.55), a luminance of 134 cd cm^-2, and a turn-on voltage of 3.5 V. Protonation of the pendant pyridine nitrogen atoms of L¹ afforded a second ionic complex [Pd(L¹H)₂](ClO₄)₂ (2) which is also emissive at room temperature with a λ_max of 611 nm, resulting in an orange LEC with CIE(x, y) = (0.43, 0.53). The presence of mobile anions and cations in the second inorganic transition metal complex resulted in more efficient charge injection and transport which significantly improved the luminance and turn-on voltage of the device to 188.6 cd cm^-2 and 3 V, respectively. This study establishes Pd(II) hydrazone complexes as a new class of materials whose emissive properties can be chemically tuned and provides proof-of-concept for their use in LECs, opening up exciting new avenues for potential applications in the field of solid state lighting.

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials from divalent metal cations and expanded N,N′-donor linkers

The rod-shaped linker (E,E)-N,N′-(3,3′-dimethyl-4,4′-biphenyldiyl)bis[1-(3-pyridinyl)methanimine] (L) is exploited for the first time in the synthesis of extended structures. Four new coordination polymers of composition {[ZnL(OAc)2]·EtOH}n (1), {[CdL(OAc)2]·MeOH}n (2), {[Cu2L(OAc)4]·CH2Cl2}n (3) and [MnL(N3)2]n (4) have been structurally characterized. The metal cations and the anionic ancillary ligands play pivotal roles for the topology of these compounds. In the crystalline reaction products of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) acetate with the organic linker, the acetate anions connects two neighboring cations to dinuclear [M2(OAc)4] subunits. These secondary building units are further crosslinked by the N,N′-donor ligand, either perpendicular to the acetato bridges, leading to a ladder-like ribbon for 1 and 2, or in the direction of the metal···metal separation, resulting in a simple chain in the case of 3. Instead of dinuclear secondary building units, a different topology results from reaction of the N,N′ linker with Mn(ClO4)2 in the presence of azide anions: 1,3 bridging by the N3 − groups leads to infinite chains. These are crosslinked by L in perpendicular direction, and the layer structure 4 is obtained. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses revealed information on the basis of orbital interactions about the coordination environments of the metal ions. Thermogravimetric measurements indicate the highest thermal stability for 2. Strong antiferromagnetic coupling within the dinuclear subunits of 3 is observed as a consequence of superexchange via the acetato bridges.
