Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained widespread attention due to their modular construction that allows the tuning of their properties. Within this vast class of compounds, metal carboxylates containing tri- and tetravalent metal ions have been in the focus of many studies due to their often high thermal and chemical stabilities. Cerium has a rich chemistry, which depends strongly on its oxidation state. Ce(iii) exhibits properties typically observed for rare earth elements, while Ce(iv) is mostly known for its oxidation behaviour. In MOF chemistry this is reflected in their unique optical and catalytic properties. The synthetic parameters for Ce(iii)- and Ce(iv)-MOFs also differ substantially and conditions must be chosen to prevent reduction of Ce(iv) for the formation of the latter. Ce(iii)-MOFs are usually reported in comprehensive studies together with those constructed with other RE elements and normally they are isostructural. They exhibit a greater structural diversity, which is reflected in the larger variety of inorganic building units. In contrast, the synthesis conditions of Ce(iv)-MOFs were only recently (2015) established. These lead selectively to hexanuclear Ce-O clusters that are well-known for Zr-MOFs and therefore very similar structural and isoreticluar chemistry is found. Hence Ce(iv)-MOFs exhibit often high porosity, while only a few porous Ce(iii)-MOFs have been described. Some of these show structural flexibility which makes them interesting for separation processes. For Ce(iv)-MOFs the redox properties are most relevant. Thus, they are intensively discussed for catalytic, photocatalytic and sensing applications. In this perspective, the synthesis, structural chemistry and properties of Ce-MOFs are summarized.

Abstract
Two kinds of lanthanide coordination polymers formed by dipicolinic acid with lanthanide ions were synthesized by varying the counter ions. And their crystal structures, morphology and thermal stabilities were measured and compared. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that Na3[Ln(DPA)3] (Ln = Tb or Eu) stretches to a rigid network by means of bridging Na+ ion. Moreover, Na3[Ln(DPA)]3 exhibits good thermal stability and luminescent properties, and its optical properties can be remained even after heating at 200 °C more than 3 days. However, when Na+ in Na3[Ln(DPA)3] was replaced with NH4+, i.e., (NH4)3[Ln(DPA)3] with a supramolecular structure based on π-π stacking and other weak interactions, shows relatively poor thermal stability which leads to deterioration of their luminescence properties after heating treatment. This result confirms that the rigid frame structure of Na3[Ln(DPA)]3 plays a crucial role in improving its thermal stability and keeping its highly luminescent quantum efficiency.

Abstract
A new series of five three-dimensional Ln(III) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) formulated as [Ln4(μ6-L)2(μ-HCOO)(μ3-OH)3(μ3-O)(DMF)2(H2O)4] n {Ln3+ = Tb3+ (1), Eu3+ (2), Gd3+ (3), Dy3+ (4), and Er3+ (5)} was successfully obtained via a solvothermal reaction between the corresponding lanthanide(III) nitrates and 2-(6-carboxypyridin-3-yl)terephthalic acid (H3L). All of the obtained compounds were fully characterized, and their structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All products are isostructural and possess porous 3D networks of the fluorite topological type, which are driven by the cubane-like [Ln4(μ3-OH)3(μ3-O)(μ-HCOO)]6+ blocks and μ6-L3- spacers. Luminescent and sensing properties of 1-5 were investigated in detail, revealing a unique capability of Tb-MOF (1) for sensing acetone and metal(III) cations (Fe3+ or Ce3+) with high efficiency and selectivity. Apart from a facile recyclability after sensing experiments, the obtained Tb-MOF material features a remarkable stability in a diversity of environments such as common solvents, aqueous solutions of metal ions, and solutions with a broad pH range from 4 to 11. In addition, compound 1 represents a very rare example of the versatile Ln-MOF probe capable of sensing Ce3+ or Fe3+ cations or acetone molecules.
