Germanium nanocrystals as luminescent probes for rapid, sensitive and label-free detection of Fe3+ ions

A PEDOT enhanced covalent organic framework (COF) fluorescent probe for in vivo detection and imaging of Fe3

Simple and accurate in vivo monitoring of Fe3+ is essential for gaining a better understanding of its role in physiological and pathological processes. A novel fluorescent probe was synthesized via in situ solid-state polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) in the pore channels of a covalent organic framework (COF). The PEDOT@COF fluorescent probe exhibited an absolute quantum yield (QY) 3 times higher than COF. In the presence of Fe3+ the PEDOT@COF 475 nm fluorescence emission, 365 nm excitation, is quenched within 180 s. Fluorescence quenching is linear with Fe3+ in the concentration range of 0-960 μM, with a detection limit of 0.82 μM. The fluorescence quenching mechanism was attributed to inner filter effect (IEF), photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and static quenching (SQE) between PEDOT@COF and Fe3+. A paper strip-based detector was designed to facilitate practical applicability, and the PEDOT@COF probe successfully applied to fluorescence imaging of Fe3+ levels in vivo. This work details a tool of great promise for enabling detailed investigations into the role of Fe3+ in physiological and pathological diseases.

AIEgen-sensitized lanthanide nanocrystals as luminescent probes for intracellular Fe3+ monitoring

The abnormal Fe³⁺ level is known to cause various diseases, such as heart failure, liver damage and neurodegeneration. In situ probing Fe³⁺ in living cells or organisms is highly desired for both biological research and medical diagnostics. Herein, hybrid nanocomposites NaEuF₄@TCPP were constructed by the assembly of an aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) TCPP and NaEuF₄ nanocrystals (NCs). The anchored TCPP on the surface of NaEuF₄ NCs can reduce rotational relaxation of the excited state and efficiently transfer the energy to the Eu³⁺ ions with minimized nonradiative energy loss. Consequently, the prepared NaEuF₄@TCPP nanoparticles (NPs) exhibited an intense red emission with a 103-fold enhancement relative to that in NaEuF₄ NCs under 365 nm excitation. A selectively quenching response to Fe³⁺ ions for the NaEuF₄@TCPP NPs makes them luminescent probes for sensitive detection of Fe³⁺ ions with a low detection limit of 340 nM. Moreover, the luminescence of NaEuF₄@TCPP NPs could be recovered by the addition of iron chelators. Benefiting from their good biocompatibility and stability in living cells, together with the characteristic of the reversible luminescence response, the lipo-coated NaEuF₄@TCPP probes were successfully applied for real-time monitoring of Fe³⁺ ions in living HeLa cells. These results are expected to motivate the exploration of AIE-based lanthanide probes for sensing and biomedical applications.

Nontraditional Redox Active Aliphatic Luminescent Polymer for Ratiometric pH Sensing and Sensing-Removal-Reduction of Cu(II): Strategic Optimization of Composition

Here, redox active aliphatic luminescent polymers (ALPs) are synthesized via polymerization of N,N-dimethyl-2-propenamide (DMPA) and 2-methyl-2-propenoic acid (MPA). The structures and properties of the optimum ALP3, ALP3-aggregate and Cu(I)-ALP3, ratiometric pH sensing, redox activity, aggregation enhanced emission (AEE), Stokes shift, and oxygen-donor selective coordination-reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) are explored via spectroscopic, microscopic, density functional theory-reduced density gradient (DFT-RDG), fluorescence quenching, adsorption isotherm-thermodynamics, and electrochemical methods. The intense blue and green fluorescence of ALP3 emerges at pH = 7.0 and 9.0, respectively, due to alteration of fluorophores from -C(═O)N(CH₃ )₂ / -C(═O)OH to -C(O^- )═N⁺ (CH₃ )₂ / -C(═O)O^- , inferred from binding energies at 401.32 eV (-C(O^- )═N⁺ (CH₃ )₂ ) and 533.08 eV (-C(═O)O^- ), significant red shifting in absorption and emission spectra, and peak at 2154 cm^-1 . The n-π* communications in ALP3-aggregate, hydrogen bondings within 2.34-2.93 Å (intramolecular) in ALP3 and within 1.66-2.89 Å (intermolecular) in ALP3-aggregate, respectively, contribute significantly in fluorescence, confirmed from NMR titration, ratiometric pH sensing, AEE, excitation dependent emission, and Stokes shift and DFT-RDG analyses. For ALP3, Stokes shift, excellent limit of detection, adsorption capacity, and redox potentials are 13561 cm^-1 /1.68 eV, 0.137 ppb, 122.93 mg g^-1 , and 0.33/-1.04 V at pH 7.0, respectively.

Insight into the Effect of Ligands on the Optical Properties of Germanium Quantum Dots and Their Applications in Persistent Cell Imaging

Germanium quantum dots (GeQDs) show unique advantages in fluorescence applications due to their large quantum confinement effect and excellent biocompatibility. However, GeQDs are confronted with difficulty in accurately controlling the fluorescence emission. This defect brings challenges to understanding the fluorescence mechanism and limits the potential applications of GeQDs. In this paper, a series of GeQDs with the average diameter of about 2.6 nm modified with different ligands were synthesized by the chemical reduction method. The fluorescence emission of GeQDs can be changed from blue to yellow-green through adjusting the surface ligands. The influence of surface ligands on the fluorescence emission of GeQDs was thoroughly investigated by experimental and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the synthesized GeQDs exhibit good biocompatibility and photostability and can act as high-performance fluorescence probes for long-term fluorescent bioimaging. This work provides a good and deep understanding of the fluorescence mechanism of GeQDs and will facilitate diverse promising applications of GeQDs in the near future.

Sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliated α-GeTe: a two-dimensional material with high Fe3+ sensitivity

We describe sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation of rhombohedral germanium telluride (α-GeTe) to obtain a good dispersion of α-GeTe nanosheets in ethanol. The thickness of the α-GeTe nanosheets is dependent on the exfoliation conditions, and few-layer α-GeTe nanosheets of 2-4 layers and even monolayer α-GeTe were obtained. We use first-principles calculations to investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of monolayer and bulk α-GeTe and compare the optical band gap of centrifugally fractionated α-GeTe nanosheet dispersions with the computational predictions. We demonstrate that few layer α-GeTe nanosheets are purified selectively through centrifugation, and they exhibit high sensitivity to Fe3+. The scalable production of two-dimensional α-GeTe nanosheets can be used in the future optoelectronic industry.

Photoluminescence of Functionalized Germanium Nanocrystals Embedded in Arsenic Sulfide Glass

Embedding metallic and semiconductor nanoparticles in a chalcogenide glass matrix effectively modifies the photonic properties. Such nanostructured materials could play an important role in optoelectronic devices, catalysis, and imaging applications. In this work, we fabricate and characterize germanium nanocrystals (Ge NCs) embedded in arsenic sulfide thin films by pulsed laser ablation in aliphatic amine solutions. Unstable surface termination of aliphatic groups and stable termination by amine on Ge NCs are indicated by Raman and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy measurements. A broad-band photoluminescence in the visible range is observed for the amine functionalized Ge NCs. A noticeable enhancement of fluorescence is observed for Ge NCs in arsenic sulfide, after annealing to remove the residual solvent of the glass matrix.

Structural evolution of reduced GeOx nanoparticles

GeO_x nanoparticles (NPs) are of growing interest in lithium storage and optoelectronics. GeO_x NPs prepared by chemical reduction, exposed to air or retained under N₂, then annealed under H₂ at various temperatures are studied herein using soft X-ray spectroscopy. We find that fresh and air-exposed GeO_x NPs evolve rather differently under annealing. The fresh GeO_x NPs start as a very amorphous heterogeneous mixture of GeO_x and Ge, and during annealing both the valence band and conduction band edges evolve. In contrast, the air-exposed GeO_x NPs initially contain quartz-phase GeO₂, and during annealing only the conduction band edge evolves due to increased oxygen vacancies forming unoccupied defect states (the valence band does not change until annealing at high temperture, at which point almost all of the GeO₂ is removed). These findings suggest a preparation and annealing strategy that could be used to tailor GeO_x NPs for their intended use in lithium storage or optoelectronic applications.

Tuning photoluminescence and surface properties of carbon nanodots for chemical sensing

Obtaining tunable photoluminescence (PL) with improved emission properties is crucial for successfully implementing fluorescent carbon nanodots (fCDs) in all practical applications such as multicolour imaging and multiplexed detection by a single excitation wavelength. In this study, we report a facile hydrothermal approach to adjust the PL peaks of fCDs from blue, green to orange by controlling the surface passivation reaction during the synthesis. This is achieved by tuning the passivating reagents in a step-by-step manner. The as-prepared fCDs with narrow size distribution show improved PL properties with different emission wavelengths. Detailed characterization of fCDs using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that the surface chemical composition results in this tunable PL emission. Surface passivation significantly alters the surface status, resulting in fCDs with either stronger surface oxidation or N element doping that ultimately determine their PL properties. Further experiments suggested that the as-prepared orange luminescent fCDs (O-fCDs) were sensitive and specific nanosensing platforms towards Fe(3+) determination in a complex biological environment, emphasizing their potential practical applications in clinical and biological fields.

UV photoexcitation of a dissolved metalloid Ge9 cluster compound and its extensive ultrafast response

Femtosecond pump-probe absorption spectroscopy in tetrahydrofuran solution has been used to investigate the dynamics of a metalloid cluster compound {Ge9[Si(SiMe3)3]3}(-). Upon UV photoexcitation, the transients in the near-infrared spectral region showed signatures reminiscent of excess electrons in THF (bound or quasi-free) whereas in the visible part excited state dynamics of the cluster complex dominates.
