Template engaged synthesis of hollow ceria-based composites

Investigation into the impact of CeO2 morphology regulation on the oxidation process of dichloromethane

Four distinct CeO2 catalysts featuring varied morphologies (nanorods, nanocubes, nanoparticles, and nano spindle-shaped) were synthesized through a hydrothermal process and subsequently employed in the oxidation of dichloromethane (DCM). The findings revealed that the nano spindle-shaped CeO2 exhibited exposure of crystal faces (111), demonstrating superior catalytic oxidation performance for DCM with a T90 of 337 °C and notably excellent low-temperature catalytic activity (T50 = 192 °C). The primary reaction products were identified as HCl and CO2. Through obvious characterizations, it showed that the excellent catalytic activity presented by CeO2-s catalyst might be related to the higher oxygen vacancy concentration, surface active oxygen content, and superior redox performance caused by specific exposed crystal planes. Meanwhile, CeO2-s catalyst owned outstanding stability, reusability, and water inactivation regeneration, which had tremendous potential in practical treatment.

Discrete, Cationic Palladium(II)-Oxo Clusters via f-Metal Ion Incorporation and their Macrocyclic Host-Guest Interactions with Sulfonatocalixarenes

We report on the discovery of the first two examples of cationic palladium(II)‐oxo clusters (POCs) containing f‐metal ions, [Pd^II₆O₁₂M₈{(CH₃)₂AsO₂}₁₆(H₂O)₈]⁴⁺ (M=Ce^IV, Th^IV), and their physicochemical characterization in the solid state, in solution and in the gas phase. The molecular structure of the two novel POCs comprises an octahedral {Pd₆O₁₂}¹²⁻ core that is capped by eight M^IV ions, resulting in a cationic, cubic assembly {Pd₆O₁₂M^IV₈}²⁰⁺, which is coordinated by a total of 16 terminal dimethylarsinate and eight water ligands, resulting in the mixed Pd^II‐Ce^IV/Th^IV oxo‐clusters [Pd^II₆O₁₂M₈{(CH₃)₂AsO₂}₁₆(H₂O)₈]⁴⁺ (M=Ce, Pd₆Ce₈; Th, Pd₆Th₈). We have also studied the formation of host‐guest inclusion complexes of Pd₆Ce₈ and Pd₆Th₈ with anionic 4‐sulfocalix[n]arenes (n=4, 6, 8), resulting in the first examples of discrete, enthalpically‐driven supramolecular assemblies between large metal‐oxo clusters and calixarene‐based macrocycles. The POCs were also found to be useful as pre‐catalysts for electrocatalytic CO₂‐reduction and HCOOH‐oxidation.

Chem-inspired hollow ceria nanozymes with lysosome-targeting for tumor synergistic phototherapy

The precise operation of the hypoxic tumor microenvironment presents a promising way to improve treatment efficacy, in particular in tumor synergistic phototherapy. This work reports an innovative approach to build adenosine triphosphate-modified hollow ceria nanozymes (ATP-HCNPs@Ce6) that manipulate tumor hypoxia to effectively achieve drug delivery. Hollow ceria nanoparticles (HCNPs) exhibit a controllable hollow structure through varying nitric acid concentrations in the nanocomposites. Specifically, ATP modification makes HCNPs exceptionally biocompatible and stable and acts as a regulator of HCNP enzymatic activity. In the stage of drug loading, newly prepared ATP-HCNPs@Ce6 serves as an in situ oxygen-generating agent because of its ability to simulate catalase. Therefore, ATP-HCNPs@Ce6 has adjustable enzymatic properties that act like a "switch" to selectively supply oxygen in response to high levels of hydrogen peroxide expression and the slightly acidic lysosomal environment of the tumor to enhance lysosome-targeted photodynamic therapy. Moreover, the obvious anticancer effects of ATP-HCNPs@Ce6 are demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. Overall, a simple and rapid self-assembly strategy to form and modify multifunctional HCNPs is reported, which may further propel their application in the field of precision tumor treatment.

Fabrication of Hierarchical Indium Vanadate Materials for Supercapacitor Application

Transition metal orthovanadates are emerging 2D materials for promising electrochemical energy storage applications. Facile hydrothermal method for nanocrystalline indium vanadate (InVO4) semiconducting materials' fabrication is economical because of its direct chemical synthesis. X-ray diffraction studies, field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoelectron X-ray spectrum are used to describe the semiconductor materials as synthesized. InVO4 microspheres have attracted a lot of attention in the energy and environmental sector. These microsphere-derived semiconductor materials are recognized to offer the advantages of their large surface area, tunable pore sizes, enhanced light absorption, efficient carrier (electron-hole) separation, superior electronic and optical behavior, and high durability. From the results of SEM and TEM, InVO4 shows a microsphere construction with a mixture of nanosized particles. Diffuse reflectance UV-visible measurements are used to determine the bandgap, and it is found to be 2.1 eV for InVO4. The electrochemical analysis reveals a superior performance of the pseudocapacitor with hydrothermally derived microspheres of InVO4. Alongside an improved pseudocapacity, developed after 4000 cycles, it has excellent cycling stability with a retention of ≈94% of its original specific capacitance efficiency.

Functionalization of Hollow Nanomaterials for Catalytic Applications: Nanoreactor Construction

Hollow nanomaterials have attracted a broad interest in multidisciplinary research due to their unique structure and preeminent properties. Owing to the high specific surface area, well-defined active site, delimited void space, and tunable mass transfer rate, hollow nanostructures can serve as excellent catalysts, supports, and reactors for a variety of catalytic applications, including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, homogeneous catalysis, etc. Based on state-of-the-art synthetic methods and characterization techniques, researchers focus on the purposeful functionalization of hollow nanomaterials for catalytic mechanism studies and intricate catalytic reactions. Herein, an overview of current reports with respect to the catalysis of functionalized hollow nanomaterials is given, and they are classified into five types of versatile strategies with a top-down perspective, including textual and composition modification, encapsulation, multishelled construction, anchored single atomic site, and surface molecular engineering. In the detailed case studies, the design and construction of hierarchical hollow catalysts are discussed. Moreover, since hollow structure offers more than two types of spatial-delimited sites, complicated catalytic reactions are elaborated. In summary, functionalized hollow nanomaterials provide an ideal model for the rational design and development of efficient catalysts.

Litchi-peel-like hierarchical hollow copper-ceria microspheres: aerosol-assisted synthesis and high activity and stability for catalytic CO oxidation

Copper-ceria is considered to be a promising system used in exhaust treatment due to its low cost and decent catalytic activity. Herein, we have developed novel litchi-peel-like hollow copper-ceria microspheres with varying Cu contents via an aerosol-assisted route. It is found that the dextrin in the spray solution plays a significant role as a sacrificial template and leads to the formation of this hierarchical hollow structure, in which higher surface area and active CuOx species with higher dispersion result in better catalytic activity compared to the usual hollow samples. The litchi-peel-like sample with 20% Cu exhibits the best reactivity for CO oxidation, namely 50% conversion at 83 °C and 100% conversion at 120 °C. Importantly, this novel copper-ceria sample displays outstanding catalytic stability involving cycle stability, long-term stability and thermal stability, which is attributed to step-stabilized strong interaction between CuOx species and CeO2. The superior catalytic activity and stability beyond commercial 5 wt% Pt/Al2O3 provides it with the potential to be a substitute for Pt-based catalysts in practical applications.

Strong metal-support interaction in novel core-shell Au-CeO2 nanostructures induced by different pretreatment atmospheres and its influence on CO oxidation

Yolk-shell Au/CeO2 (Y-Au/CeO2) and encapsulated Au/CeO2 (E-Au/CeO2) nanocatalysts were prepared by using silica templates. A strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) in the Au/CeO2 nanostructures induced by different pretreatment atmospheres and its influence on CO oxidation were studied. E-Au/CeO2 pretreated in O2 had the best performance, followed by Y-Au/CeO2 pretreated in O2, Y-Au/CeO2 pretreated in H2, and E-Au/CeO2 pretreated in H2. The reasons for the different activities were discussed. There were two kinds of strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) between Au and CeO2 termed as R-SMSI (pretreated in reductive atmosphere) and O-SMSI (pretreated in oxidation atmosphere). Because of the smaller size of the Au and the larger contact area, both the R-SMSI and O-SMSI of E-Au/CeO2 were larger than those of Y-Au/CeO2. The O-SMSI was accompanied by the formation of cationic Au species that were beneficial to the enhancing of activity. As expected, the activity of E-Au/CeO2 pretreated in O2 with a Au size less than 5 nm was higher than that of Y-Au/CeO2 pretreated in O2 with 25 nm Au. However, it is surprisingly found that the activity of Y-Au/CeO2 pretreated in H2 with 25 nm Au was higher than that of E-Au/CeO2 pretreated in H2 with a Au size less than 5 nm. R-SMSI resulted in the formation of a AuCe alloy that had a negative effect on the activity. Compared with E-Au/CeO2 pretreated in H2, Y-Au/CeO2 pretreated in H2 exhibited a smaller relative content of the AuCe alloy, leading to a better activity of Y-Au/CeO2 pretreated in H2.

Rapid synthesis of hybrids and hollow PdO nanostructures by controlled in situ dissolution of a ZnO nanorod template: insights into the formation mechanism and thermal stability

Hollow nanomaterials have attracted a lot of interest by virtue of their wide range of applications that arise primarily due to their unique architecture. A common strategy to synthesize hollow nanomaterials is by nucleation of the shell material over a preformed core and subsequent dissolution of the core in the second step. Herein an ultrafast, microwave route has been demonstrated, to synthesize PdO nanotubes in a single step using ZnO as a sacrificial template. The mechanism of the nanotube formation has been investigated in detail using control experiments. By tuning the starting ratio of PdCl2 : ZnO, hollow to hybrid PdO nanostructures could be obtained using the same method. Conversion of the PdO to Pd nanotubes has been shown by simple NaBH4 treatment. The thermal stability of the PdO nanotubes has been studied. The insights presented here are general and applicable for the synthesis of hybrids/hollow structures in other systems as well.
