Enabling Valence Delocalization in Iron(III) Macrocyclic Complexes through Ring Unsaturation

The complexes [FeIII(HMC)(C2DMA)2]CF3SO3 ([2]OTf) and [FeIII(HMTI)(C2Y)2]CF3SO3 ([3a-c]OTf) have been prepared and thoroughly characterized (HMC = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane; HMTI = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-1,3,8,10-tetraene; Y = Fc (ferrocenyl, [3a]OTf), 4-(N,N-dimethyl)anilino (DMA, [3b]OTf), or 4-(N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)anilino (TPA, [3c]OTf); OTf- = CF3SO3-)). Vibrational and electronic absorption spectroelectrochemical analyses following one-electron oxidation of the ethynyl substituent Y revealed evidence of strong coupling in the resultant mixed valent species for all HMTI-based complexes. However, the analogous mixed valent ion based on [2]OTf appeared to be more localized. Thus, the tetra-imino macrocycle HMTI has enabled significant valence delocalization along the -C2-FeIII-C2- bridge. Electron paramagnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectroscopic studies of [3b]OTf reveal that the π-acidity of HMTI lowers the energy of the FeIII dπ orbitals compared to the purely σ-donating HMC. This observation provides a basis for the interpretation of the macrocycle-dependent valence (de)localization.

ON/OFF Spiroconjugation through Peripheral Functionalization: Impact on the Reactivity and Chiroptical Properties of Spirobifluorenes

Spirobifluorenes are an important class of spiro compounds frequently used in the field of organic electronics. However, harnessing spiroconjugation to obtain high-performance in such structural motifs remains unexplored. We herein propose that peripheral functionalization may serve as a useful tool to control spiroconjugation in an ON/OFF manner on both chemical reactivity and photophysical properties. In particular, the ratio of mono- and di-functionalized spirobifluorenes found experimentally during their synthesis were found to be 3/2, 7/2, and 12/2 for phenyl, nitro-phenyl and amino-phenyl analogues, respectively. These remarkable reactivity differences correlate with the spiroconjugation character evaluated theoretically at the CAM-B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. Additionally, comparison of experimental and predicted optical and chiroptical responses shows that spiroconjugated molecular orbitals have a significant or negligible involvement on the main electronic transitions depending on the peripheral functionality of the spirobifluorene.

Aggregation Induced Emissive Luminogens for Sensing of Toxic Elements

The major findings in the growing field of aggregation induced emissive (AIE) active materials for the detection of environmental toxic pollutants have been summarized and discussed in this Review article. Owing to the underlying photophysical phenomenon, fluorescent AIE active molecules show more impact on sensing applications. The major focus in current research efforts is on the development of AIE active materials such as TPE based organic fluorescent molecules, metal organic framework, and polymers that can be employed for the detection of toxic pollutants such as CN- , NO2- , Hg2+ , Cd2+ , As3+ , As5+ , F- , Pb2+ , Sb3+ ions.

A multi-binding site hydrazone-based chemosensor for Zn(ii) and Cd(ii): a new strategy for the detection of metal ions in aqueous media based on aggregation-induced emission

A multi-binding site chemosensor, N-(3-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-3-hydroxy-2-naphthahydrazone (H₃L), with excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behaviour was prepared and characterized. It possesses no aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics but can detect Cd²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions selectively in the "off-on" mode based on the AIE of their complexes in the media of THF/HEPES and THF/H₂O, respectively, which will provide a new strategy for target detection based on AIE. The detection limits of Zn²⁺ and Cd²⁺ were 9.85 × 10^-9 M and 1.27 × 10^-7 M, respectively. The aggregates of the complexes formed in the detection system were confirmed by DLS data and SEM images. The corresponding Zn²⁺ (1) and Cd²⁺ (2) complexes were prepared to investigate the response mechanism. Powder X-ray diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction proved that complex 1 is the species formed in the detection system. The chemosensor coordinates with the Cd²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions in different formation and coordination modes, leading to the emission position of the aggregates at 560 and 645 nm, respectively, based on which Cd²⁺ ions were successfully differentiated from Zn²⁺ ions. Moreover, the detection of Cd²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions was realized qualitatively via test paper and quantitatively in water.

Are Alkynyl Spacers in Ancillary Ligands in Heteroleptic Bis(diimine)copper(I) Dyes Beneficial for Dye Performance in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells?

The syntheses of 4,4'-bis(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (1), 4,4'-bis(4-dimethylaminophenylethynyl)-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (2), 4,4'-bis(4-diphenylaminophenyl)-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (3), and 4,4'-bis(4-diphenylaminophenylethynyl)-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (4) are reported along with the preparations and characterisations of their homoleptic copper(I) complexes [CuL2][PF6] (L = 1-4). The solution absorption spectra of the complexes exhibit ligand-centred absorptions in addition to absorptions in the visible region assigned to a combination of intra-ligand and metal-to-ligand charge-transfer. Heteroleptic [Cu(5)(Lancillary)]+ dyes in which 5 is the anchoring ligand ((6,6'-dimethyl-[2,2'-bipyridine]-4,4'-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(phosphonic acid) and Lancillary = 1-4 have been assembled on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)-TiO2 electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Performance parameters and external quantum efficiency (EQE) spectra of the DSCs (four fully-masked cells for each dye) reveal that the best performing dyes are [Cu(5)(1)]+ and [Cu(5)(3)]+. The alkynyl spacers are not beneficial, leading to a decrease in the short-circuit current density (JSC), confirmed by lower values of EQEmax. Addition of a co-absorbent (n-decylphosphonic acid) to [Cu(5)(1)]+ lead to no significant enhancement of performance for DSCs sensitized with [Cu(5)(1)]+. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been used to investigate the interfaces in DSCs; the analysis shows that more favourable electron injection into TiO2 is observed for sensitizers without the alkynyl spacer and confirms higher JSC values for [Cu(5)(1)]+.

A small molecular boron-phenylpyrrin sensor for H+/Fe3+ and its application as a digital demultiplexer

A julolidine-based boron-phenylpyrrin small molecule has been designed and synthesized through a one-pot condensation-complexation procedure. Systematic optical studies show that this compound displays two distinct optical responses to the addition of HCl and Fe[Formula: see text] in succession: the addition of HCl induces an obvious red shift in its maximum absorption and fluorescence emission bands accompanied with the fluorescence quenching, whereas after synchronously adding H[Formula: see text] and Fe[Formula: see text], the maximum absorption and fluorescence emission wavelength were found to shift little but with an obvious decrease in the absorbance and fluorescence intensity, suggesting the dual-detecting nature of this compound to H[Formula: see text] and Fe[Formula: see text] under acid conditions. More interestingly, based on the HCl/Fe[Formula: see text]-mediated absorption and fluorescence signal features, JBPP can function as AND, NAND, INH and IMP logic gates which can be further developed into a 2:4 digital demultiplexer These will endow this small molecule compound with great potential for applications in molecular logic material, chemosensors and biological fields.

1,4-Dihydropyridines: discovery of minimal AIEEgens and their mitochondrial imaging applications

Minimal AIEEgens containing only a single ring were synthesized through a facile biocatalysis procedure and were successfully utilized in the imaging of mitochondria.

Rhodium(iii)-catalyzed C–H annulation of N-arylpyridinium salts with internal alkynes directly affords substituted cationic 12-azapyrene salts, which exhibit tunable and intense fluorescence.

0-0 Energies Using Hybrid Schemes: Benchmarks of TD-DFT, CIS(D), ADC(2), CC2, and BSE/GW formalisms for 80 Real-Life Compounds

The 0-0 energies of 80 medium and large molecules have been computed with a large panel of theoretical formalisms. We have used an approach computationally tractable for large molecules, that is, the structural and vibrational parameters are obtained with TD-DFT, the solvent effects are accounted for with the PCM model, whereas the total and transition energies have been determined with TD-DFT and with five wave function approaches accounting for contributions from double excitations, namely, CIS(D), ADC(2), CC2, SCS-CC2, and SOS-CC2, as well as Green's function based BSE/GW approach. Atomic basis sets including diffuse functions have been systematically applied, and several variations of the PCM have been evaluated. Using solvent corrections obtained with corrected linear-response approach, we found that three schemes, namely, ADC(2), CC2, and BSE/GW allow one to reach a mean absolute deviation smaller than 0.15 eV compared to the measurements, the two former yielding slightly better correlation with experiments than the latter. CIS(D), SCS-CC2, and SOS-CC2 provide significantly larger deviations, though the latter approach delivers highly consistent transition energies. In addition, we show that (i) ADC(2) and CC2 values are extremely close to each other but for systems absorbing at low energies; (ii) the linear-response PCM scheme tends to overestimate solvation effects; and that (iii) the average impact of nonequilibrium correction on 0-0 energies is negligible.

Click synthesis of a novel triazole bridged AIE active cyclodextrin probe for specific detection of Cd2+
