Boosting the photo-switchability of double-responsive water-soluble polymers by incorporating arylazopyrazole dyes

Dual thermo- and light-responsive water-soluble copolymers that respond to exclusively non-invasive triggers are obtained by functionalising poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) with arylazopyrazole side chains. The light-induced E-Z (trans-Z) photo isomerisation of these dyes provides an exceptionally effective photo-switch, which can reversibly shift the LCST-type phase transition temperatures by almost 25 K.

Controlling the LCST-Phase Transition in Azobenzene-Functionalized Poly (N-Isopropylacrlyamide) Hydrogels by Light

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) PNIPAAm hydrogels were modified with a new azobenzene-containing co-monomer. In this work, light responsiveness as an additional functionality, is conceptualized to induce two phase transitions in the same material, which can be controlled by light. For a hydrogel with merely 2.5 mol% of this co-monomer, the lower critical solution transition temperature (LCST) was lowered by 12 °C (to 20 °C) compared to PNIPAAm (LCST at 32 °C), as analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The untreated unimodal endotherm split into a bimodal peak upon irradiation with UV-light, giving a second onset due to the switched (Z) isomer-rich regions, LCST*_H2.5%-(Z) = 26 °C. On irradiation with 450 nm, leading to the reverse (Z) to (E) isomerization, the endotherm was also reversible. Thus, a photo-switchable hydrogel whose LCST and structure are tunable with the hydrophobicity-hydrophilicity of the (E) and (Z) isomeric state of azobenzene was obtained. The influence of the increase in the mol% of azoacrylate on the LCST was evaluated via DSC, in combination with NMR studies, UV-vis spectroscopy and control experiments with linear polymers. The large light-driven modulation of the LCST adds bistability in thermoresponsive hydrogels, which may open diverse applications in the field of soft robotics actuators.

Photoluminescent polymer micelles with thermo-/pH-/metal responsibility and their features in selective optical sensing of Pd(ii) cations

Photoluminescent polymers can be divided into two types of structures: one is the well-known conventional π-conjugated rigid chain polymers bearing π-conjugated chromophores in their side chains, and the other is the common flexible polymers without π-conjugated chromophores in their main or side chains but with a feature of clustering electron-rich and/or dipole groups in their main and/or side chains. In this work, we found a new photoluminescent polymer comprising theophylline (T) and imidazole (I) residues in a suitable ratio in the side chains on the common polystyrenic block (PVB-T/I). We synthesized a block copolymer (denoted as P2) consisting of hydrophobic PVB-T/I and hydrophilic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), and we investigated its self-assembly into micelles and their micellar features, such as thermo-responsibility, fluorescence emission, pH, and metal ion-dependent photoluminescence, in detail. Especially, the micelles self-assembled from P2 showed intrinsic blue emission which was emitted from the charge transfer association between T and I residues in the intra-chains. Weakening the association by adjustment of the pH or addition of metal ions could evidently reduce the photoluminescence in the micellar state. Very interestingly, among many metal cations, only Pd2+, which can chelate strongly with theophylline, strongly quenched the photoluminescence from the micelles. Therefore, the polymer micelles functioned as an optical sensor for Pd(ii) ion not only by spectroscopy but also with the naked eye.

Specific Ion Effects of Azobenzene Salts on Photoresponse of PNIPAm in Aqueous Solutions

Ionic species are important to dominate phase separation behaviors of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) in aqueous solutions. Herein, photoresponsive azobenzene-based salts with various ions are prepared and their photoresponsive ion effects on clouding temperatures (T_cpS ) of PNIPAm in aqueous solutions are explored. It is found that, despite of various structures of anions and cations, trans-T_cpS under vis light irradiation are always higher than cis-T_cpS under UV irradiation. Particularly, Hofmeister effect of anions on T_cpS is roughly observed. For example, azobenzene with kosmotropic CO₃ ^2- gives the lowest cis-T_cp while in use of typical chaotropic anions, such as ClO₄ ^- , azobenzene isomerization less affects values of T_cp s. In another hand, azobenzene-based metallic salts containing lithium, sodium, and potassium cations also demonstrate photoresponsive Hofmeister effect. Trans-metallic azobenzene demonstrates a chaotropic effect on T_cp s while UV induces kosmotropic behaviors on T_cpS . Additionally, ionic conduction of the solution along with photoresponsive phase separations is also investigated and PNIPAm aggregations induce a sharp reduction of ion conduction during UV light illumination.

Azobenzene-Based Ionic Liquid Switches Phase Separation of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Aqueous Solutions as a Molecular Trigger, Leading to UV Shutdown of Ionic Transport

This paper presents a light-switchable phase separation of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) in aqueous solutions using an azobenzene-based ionic liquid as a molecular trigger. A different UV response was obtained with use of an azobenzene molecular trigger. A UV-induced aggregation of PNIPAm was observed in the current system, which is opposite to that reported for azobenzene-functionalized PNIPAm systems. According to in situ FT-IR, cis-isomers destabilized the hydrogen bonding between water and PNIPAm, contributing to a light-induced aggregation of PNIPAm. This polarity effect was quite similar to salting effects of hofmeister anions on clouding points. Furthermore, a UV shutdown of ion transport of the azobenzene-based ionic liquid was demonstrated with a significant reduction factor of 0.03 at ambient temperature, which can be potentially applied in biotechnology, optoelectronics, and ionic circuits.

Enhanced Stain Removal and Comfort Control Achieved by Cross-Linking Light and Thermo Dual-Responsive Copolymer onto Cotton Fabrics

Enhanced capabilities of stain removal and comfort control are simultaneously achieved by the light and thermo dual-responsive copolymer poly(triethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate- co-ethylene glycol methacrylate- co-acrylamide azobenzene) (P(MEO₃MA- co-EGMA- co-AAAB)) cross-linked on cotton fabrics. P(MEO₃MA- co-EGMA- co-AAAB) is synthesized by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization with a molar ratio of 8 (MEO₃MA):1 (EGMA):1 (AAAB). The MEO₃MA units induce a thermoresponsive behavior to the copolymer. The hydrophilicity of the copolymer films can be further improved by the light-induced trans- cis isomerization of the AAAB units with UV radiation. The copolymer is facilely immobilized onto cotton fabrics with 1,2,3,4-butane tetracarboxylic acid as cross-linker. Due to the immobilization of P(MEO₃MA- co-EGMA- co-AAAB), the hydrophilicity of the fabric surface is increased under UV radiation. Therefore, by simply installing a UV light source in the washing machine, better capability of stain removal is realized for the cross-linked cotton fabrics. It can prominently reduce the consumption of energy, water, and surfactants in laundry. In addition, the trans-AAAB units of the copolymer cause the cross-linked P(MEO₃MA- co-EGMA- co-AAAB) layer to be more hydrophobic under ambient conditions. Hence, the copolymer can more easily collapse and form a porous structure on the fabrics. Thus, the air permeability of cotton fabrics cross-linked with P(MEO₃MA- co-EGMA- co-AAAB) is enhanced by 13% at human body temperature as compared to P(MEO₃MA- co-EGMA), giving improved comfort control during daily wear.

Reversible Photo- and Thermoresponsive, Self-Assembling Azobenzene Containing Zwitterionic Polymers

Commercially available azo dyes bearing amino groups were grafted to zwitterionic copolymers composed of cyclic anhydride functionality. The zwitterionic copolymers were prepared for the first time by polymerizing sulfobetaine (SB) monomer with maleic anhydride (MA) under conventional free radical polymerization as well as reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Poly(SB- co-MA) self-assembled in deionized water. Azobenzene grafted zwitterionic poly((SB- co-MA)- g-Azo) exhibited multiresponsive behavior. As confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy, trans → cis isomerization of the azo group was responsible for the photo- and thermal responsive behavior. The photoisomerization was reversible, and no photoaging was detected during the repeated exposure to UV and visible light. The water-soluble nature of photoresponsive azo dye grafted copolymers makes it suitable for applications in biological systems.

A new visible light and temperature responsive diblock copolymer

Cross-linking of COOH-containing polymers using Ag(i)-catalyzed oxidative decarboxylation in aqueous solution

Cross-linking that defines the three-dimensional networks in hydrogels has a significant impact on their physiochemical properties. The cross-linking of hydrophilic polymers via post-polymerization reactions is an ideal way to manufacture hydrogels with high reproducibility and without monomer residuals. We herein report the use of Ag(i)-catalyzed oxidative decarboxylation to cross-link poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and a family of COOH-containing hydrophilic polymers. Our method is based on the radical-mediated elimination reaction to remove COOH group(s) and generate alkyl radical(s) simultaneously, in the presence of AgNO₃ and persulfates. The further intermolecular radical coupling is demonstrated to be very effective in inducing cross-linking and gelation of COOH-containing hydrophilic polymers. The cross-linking reaction can be readily achieved by simply mixing a small amount of AgNO₃ (as low as 0.03 wt%) and persulfates with polymers at room temperature in air. Rheological measurements show that the gelation occurs in 20-30 min. The applications of oxidative decarboxylation in the preparation of hydrogels of COOH-containing hydrophilic copolymers and their interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels are further validated. Finally, the residual Ag(i) ions in hydrogels are discussed in terms of how Ag(i) ions further change the mechanical and optical properties of hydrogels by photoreduction of Ag(i) to Ag nanoparticles. We expect that this Ag(i)-catalyzed oxidative decarboxylation chemistry can not only serve as a facile and general strategy to produce hydrogels through post-polymerization, but also enrich the toolbox of cross-linking chemistries of COOH-containing polymers in all forms (e.g. films, colloids and dispersions).

Light and Temperature as Dual Stimuli Lead to Self-Assembly of Hyperbranched Azobenzene-Terminated Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

Hyperbranched poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)s (HBPNIPAMs) end-capped with different azobenzene chromophores (HBPNIPAM-Azo-OC₃H₇, HBPNIPAM-Azo-OCH₃, HBPNIPAM-Azo, and HBPNIPAM-Azo-COOH) were successfully synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of N-isopropylacrylamide using different azobenzene-functional initiators. All HBPNIPAMs showed a similar highly branched structure, similar content of azobenzene chromophores, and similar absolute weight/average molecular weight. The different azobenzene structures at the end of the HBPNIPAMs exhibited reversible trans-cis-trans isomerization behavior under alternating UV and Vis irradiation, which lowered the critical solution temperature (LCST) due to different self-assembling behaviors. The spherical aggregates of HBPNIPAM-Azo-OC₃H₇ and HBPNIPAM-Azo-OCH₃ containing hydrophobic para substituents either changed to bigger nanorods or increased in number, leading to a change in LCST of -2.0 and -1.0 °C, respectively, after UV irradiation. However, the unimolecular aggregates of HBPNIPAM-Azo were unchanged, while the unstable multimolecular particles of HBPNIPAM-Azo-COOH end-capped with strongly polar carboxyl groups partly dissociated to form a greater number of unimolecular aggregates and led to an LCST increase of 1.0 °C.

In Situ Photocontrol of Block Copolymer Morphology During Dip-Coating of Thin Films

We demonstrate a unique combination of simultaneous top-down and bottom-up control of the morphology of block copolymer films by application of in situ optical irradiation during dip-coating. A light-addressable and block-selective small molecule, 4-butyl-4'-hydroxyazobenzene (BHAB), is introduced into a diblock copolymer of polystyrene and poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-P4VP) of 28.4 wt % P4VP via supramolecular chemistry, notably by hydrogen bonding to P4VP. We show that the spherical morphology of thin films dip-coated from a THF solution at slow withdrawal rates in the dark convert to cylindrical morphology when dip-coated under illumination. This is attributed to volume expansion of the P4VP/BHAB phase due to trans-cis photoisomerization combined with a light-induced increase in BHAB uptake in the film. The demonstrated photocontrol highlights the potential of dip-coating as a scalable film preparation method that can be easily coupled with external stimuli to direct nanostructured self-assembly in the films as solvent evaporates.

Diverse thermoresponsive behaviors of uncharged UCST block copolymer micelles in physiological medium

Three amphiphilic diblock copolymers, representative of three types of block copolymer (BCP) design, were synthesized using reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. All of them have a same uncharged block of a random copolymer of commercially available acrylamide and acrylonitrile, P(AAm-co-AN), and exhibit a composition-tunable upper critical solution temperature (UCST). We show that by coupling a common P(AAm-co-AN) block with either hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) or hydrophilic poly(dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) or the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) polymer of poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA), the BCP micelles formed in water or in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) can display diverse and UCST-dictated changes in response to temperature variations, such as the reversible dispersion-aggregation of micelles, dissolution-formation of micelles, and reversal of micelle core and corona. The results point out that P(AAm-co-AN) is a robust UCST polymer that can be introduced into controlled polymer architectures producible by RAFT, the same way as using the extensively studied LCST counterparts like poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). This ability should make the door wide open to exploring new thermosensitive polymers based on the thermosensitivity opposite to the LCST.
