Photophysics and Rotational Dynamics of a Hydrophilic Molecule in a Room Temperature Ionic Liquid

We have studied the photophysics and rotational diffusion of hydrophilic solute 7-(N, N'-diethylamino)coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7-DCCA) in a room temperature ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([N1888 ][NTf2 ]). Comparison of activation energies of viscous flow and nonradiative decay shows that the photophysical properties of 7-DCCA are not guided by the bulk viscosity of the medium but are dependent on the specific solute solvent interaction and structural heterogeneity of the medium. The rotational relaxation behaviour of 7-DCCA in [N1888 ][NTf2] shows significant deviation from the Stokes Einstein Debye hydrodynamic model of rotational diffusion. This is indicative of the influence of specific solute solvent interaction on the rotational relaxation behaviour of 7-DCCA. Comparison of activation energy of rotational relaxation with activation energy of viscous flow clearly reinforces our assumption that the structural heterogeneity of the medium and specific solute solvent interaction plays a dominant role on the rotational diffusion instead of bulk viscosity.

Picking Out Logic Operations in a Naphthalene β-Diketone Derivative by Using Molecular Encapsulation, Controlled Protonation, and DNA Binding

On–off switching and molecular logic in fluorescent molecules are associated with what chemical inputs can do to the structure and dynamics of these molecules. Herein, we report the structure of a naphthalene derivative, the fashion of its binding to β-cyclodextrin and DNA, and the operation of logic possible using protons, cyclodextrin, and DNA as chemical inputs. The compound crystallizes out in a keto-amine form, with intramolecular N−H⋅⋅⋅O bonding. It shows stepwise formation of 1:1 and 1:2 inclusion complexes with β-cyclodextrin. The aminopentenone substituents are encapsulated by β-cyclodextrin, leaving out the naphthalene rings free. The binding constant of the β-cyclodextrin complex is 512 m⁻¹. The pK_a value of the guest molecule is not greatly affected by the complexation. Dual input logic operations, based on various chemical inputs, lead to the possibility of several molecular logic gates, namely NOR, XOR, NAND, and Buffer. Such chemical inputs on the naphthalene derivative are examples of how variable signal outputs based on binding can be derived, which, in turn, are dependent on the size and shape of the molecule.

Photophysics and rotational diffusion of hydrophilic molecule in polymer and polyols

In this work we report the photophysics and rotational diffusion of a hydrophilic solute 7-(N,N'-diethylamino)coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7-DCCA) in four protic solvents: poly(ethylene glycol), ethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, and glycerol, with variation of temperature. The cumulative effect of polarity, viscosity, and structural features of these solvents, as well as specific solute-solvent interaction on the photophysical properties of 7-DCCA was discussed. We observed significant differences in both steady-state and time-resolved emission properties. Estimation of activation energy of viscous flow and activation energy of nonradiative decay reinforce our assumption of a cumulative effect. It was observed that, in all solvents, H-bonding interactions are mainly responsible for changing the spectral properties. Study of rotational relaxation behavior demonstrates superstick boundary condition to be operative in ethylene glycol. It is due to the H-bonding interaction between 7-DCCA and ethylene glycol. Similarly, stick boundary condition is followed in case of tetraethylene glycol at 278 K and further from 293 K. Convergence to the stick boundary is observed in case of poly(ethylene glycol). These changes can be attributed to the change in structural organization in both poly(ethylene glycol) and tetraethylene glycol.

Supramolecular interaction between a hydrophilic coumarin dye and macrocyclic hosts: spectroscopic and calorimetric study

The photophysics of a hydrophilic molecule, 7-(diethylamino)-coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7-DCCA), was studied in the presence of two macrocycles, (2-hydroxypropyl)-γ-cyclodextrin and cucurbit[7]uril. We have used steady-state absorption, fluorescence, and time-resolved fluorescence emission spectroscopy; Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy; (1)H NMR spectroscopy; and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) to confirm the supramolecular host-guest complex formation. The spectral properties of 7-DCCA were modulated in the presence of both macrocycles. It was assigned that 7-DCCA forms a 1:2 complex with (2-hydroxypropyl)-γ-cyclodextrin and cucurbit[7]uril. The large modulation of the emission properties of 7-DCCA in the presence of the macrocycles indicates the formation of supramolecular complexes. A significant shift in the bond vibration frequencies in the FTIR studies showed encapsulation of the dyes in the hydrophobic cavity of the macrocycles. This is further substantiated by the (1)H NMR studies, in which the upfield and downfield shifts of the protons were observed in both the aliphatic and aromatic region in the presence of macrocycles. The time-resolved anisotropy measurements further reinforce the conception of host-guest supramolecular complex formation because, in both cases, the rotational relaxation time increases significantly compared to that in water. A deeper understanding between the differences in interaction of an anionic molecule with cucurbit[7]uril and (2-hydroxypropyl)-γ-cyclodextrin will be achieved through this work. From the ITC measurement, we have formulated the forces due to complex formation.
