Background

In recent years, nanotechnology has been playing an important role in designing smart fabrics. Nanomaterials have been employed to introduce in a sustainable manner, antimicrobial, ultraviolet resistant, electrically conductive, optical, hydrophobic and flame-retardant properties into textiles and garments. Nanomaterial based smart devices are now also being integrated with the textiles so as to perform various functions such as energy harvesting and storage, sensing, drug release and optics. These advancements have found wide applications in the fashion industry and are being developed for wider use in defence, healthcare and on-body energy harnessing applications.

Aim of review

The objective of this work is to provide an insight into the current trends of using nanotechnology in the modern textile industries and to inspire and anticipate further research in this field. This review provides an overview of the most current advances concerning on-body electronics research and the wonders which could be realized by nanomaterials in modern textiles in terms of total energy reliance on our clothes.

Key scientific concepts of review

The work underlines the various methods and techniques for the functionalization of nanomaterials and their integration into textiles with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness, comfort, wearability, energy conversion efficiency and eco-sustainability. The most recent trends of developing various nanogenerators, supercapacitors and photoelectronic devices on the fabric are highlighted, with special emphasis on the efficiency and wearability of the textile. The potential nanotoxicity associated with the processed textiles due to the tendency of these nanomaterials to leach into the environment along with possible remediation measures are also discussed. Finally, the future outlook regarding progress in the integration of smart nano-devices on textile fabrics is provided.

Development of Polymeric Nanocomposite (Xyloglucan-co-Methacrylic Acid/Hydroxyapatite/SiO2) Scaffold for Bone Tissue Engineering Applications-In-Vitro Antibacterial, Cytotoxicity and Cell Culture Evaluation

Advancement and innovation in bone regeneration, specifically polymeric composite scaffolds, are of high significance for the treatment of bone defects. Xyloglucan (XG) is a polysaccharide biopolymer having a wide variety of regenerative tissue therapeutic applications due to its biocompatibility, in-vitro degradation and cytocompatibility. Current research is focused on the fabrication of polymeric bioactive scaffolds by freeze drying method for nanocomposite materials. The nanocomposite materials have been synthesized from free radical polymerization using n-SiO₂ and n-HAp XG and Methacrylic acid (MAAc). Functional group analysis, crystallinity and surface morphology were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques, respectively. These bioactive polymeric scaffolds presented interconnected and well-organized porous morphology, controlled precisely by substantial ratios of n-SiO₂. The swelling analysis was also performed in different media at varying temperatures (27, 37 and 47 °C) and the mechanical behavior of the dried scaffolds is also investigated. Antibacterial activities of these scaffolds were conducted against pathogenic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Besides, the biological behavior of these scaffolds was evaluated by the Neutral Red dye assay against the MC3T3-E1 cell line. The scaffolds showed interesting properties for bone tissue engineering, including porosity with substantial mechanical strength, biodegradability, biocompatibility and cytocompatibility behavior. The reported polymeric bioactive scaffolds can be aspirant biomaterials for bone tissue engineering to regenerate defecated bone.

Synthesis of Silver-Coated Bioactive Nanocomposite Scaffolds Based on Grafted Beta-Glucan/Hydroxyapatite via Freeze-Drying Method: Anti-Microbial and Biocompatibility Evaluation for Bone Tissue Engineering

Advancement and development in bone tissue engineering, particularly that of composite scaffolds, are of great importance for bone tissue engineering. We have synthesized polymeric matrix using biopolymer (β-glucan), acrylic acid, and nano-hydroxyapatite through free radical polymerization method. Bioactive nanocomposite scaffolds (BNSs) were fabricated using the freeze-drying method and Ag was coated by the dip-coating method. The scaffolds have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) to investigate their functional groups, surface morphology, and phase analysis, respectively. The pore size and porosity of all BNS samples were found to be dependent on silver concentration. Mechanical testing of all BNS samples have substantial compressive strength in dry form that is closer to cancellous bone. The samples of BNS showed substantial antibacterial effect against DH5 alpha E. coli. The biological studies conducted using the MC3T3-E1 cell line via neutral red dye assay on the scaffolds have found to be biocompatible and non-cytotoxic. These bioactive scaffolds can bring numerous applications for bone tissue repairs and regenerations.

Random and aligned electrospun PLGA nanofibers embedded in microfluidic chips for cancer cell isolation and integration with air foam technology for cell release

BACKGROUND

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) comprise the high metastatic potential population of cancer cells in the blood circulation of humans; they have become the established biomarkers for cancer diagnosis, individualized cancer therapy, and cancer development. Technologies for the isolation and recovery of CTCs can be powerful cancer diagnostic tools for liquid biopsies, allowing the identification of malignancies and guiding cancer treatments for precision medicine.

METHODS

We have used an electrospinning process to prepare poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanofibrous arrays in random or aligned orientations on glass slips. We then fabricated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based microfluidic chips embedding the PLGA nanofiber arrays and modified their surfaces through sequential coating with using biotin-(PEG)7-amine through EDC/NHS activation, streptavidin (SA), and biotinylated epithelial-cell adhesion-molecule antibody (biotin-anti-EpCAM) to achieve highly efficient CTC capture. When combined with an air foam technology that induced a high shear stress and, thereby, nondestructive release of the captured cells from the PLGA surfaces, the proposed device system operated with a high cell recovery rate.

RESULTS

The morphologies and average diameters of the electrospun PLGA nanofibers were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal Raman imaging. The surface chemistry of the PLGA nanofibers conjugated with the biotin-(PEG)7-amine was confirmed through time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) imaging. The chip system was studied for the effects of the surface modification density of biotin-(PEG)7-amine, the flow rates, and the diameters of the PLGA nanofibers on the capture efficiency of EpCAM-positive HCT116 cells from the spiked liquid samples. To assess their CTC capture efficiencies in whole blood samples, the aligned and random PLGA nanofiber arrays were tested for their abilities to capture HCT116 cells, providing cancer cell capture efficiencies of 66 and 80%, respectively. With the continuous injection of air foam into the microfluidic devices, the cell release efficiency on the aligned PLGA fibers was 74% (recovery rate: 49%), while it was 90% (recovery rate: 73%) on the random PLGA fibers, from tests of 200 spiked cells in 2 mL of whole blood from healthy individuals. Our study suggests that integrated PMMA microfluidic chips embedding random PLGA nanofiber arrays may be suitable devices for the efficient capture and recovery of CTCs from whole blood samples.

Stimuli responsive biopolymer (chitosan) based blend hydrogels for wound healing application

Stimuli responsive chitosan (CS) and poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) have attained hydrogel properties in the presence of 74% neutralized poly acrylic acid (PAA) which can be exploited for wound healing applications. The FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of all specific functional groups and the developed interactions in the hydrogels. The thermal analysis explained that the hydrogel samples are thermally more stable than individual chitosan and PVP. The antimicrobial analysis revealed that all the samples show antibacterial activity against E. coli and the biodegradation analysis is performed to confirm the hydrogels degradation. The hydrogels showed enhanced responsive swelling behavior against different media depending upon the amount of PVP. The %age swelling in water is decreased with the increase in the amount of PVP. The most considerable swelling behavior is observed against pH, as they manifested low swelling at acidic pH and high swelling at neutral pH while at pH 8, the prominent values are obtained. This distinctive behavior of hydrogels and their biocompatibility made them pertinent to drug delivery and their release profile is examined spectrophotometrically using silver sulfadiazine (antibiotic for burnt wounds) showed 91.2% of drug release for a period of 1 h in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) in a consistent and controlled manner.

Treatment of neurodegenerative disorders through the blood-brain barrier using nanocarriers

Neurodegenerative diseases refer to disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) that are caused by neuronal degradations, dysfunctions, or death. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease (APHD) are regarded as the three major neurodegenerative diseases. There is a vast body of literature on the causes and treatments of these neurodegenerative diseases. However, the main obstacle in developing an effective treatment strategy is the permeability of the treatment components at the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Several strategies have been developed to improve this obstruction. For example, nanomaterials facilitate drug delivery to the BBB due to their size. They have been used widely in nanomedicine and as nanoprobes for diagnosis purposes among others in neuroscience. Nanomaterials in different forms, such as nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN), and liposomes, have been used to treat neurodegenerative diseases. This review will cover the basic concepts and applications of nanomaterials in the therapy of APHD.

Electrospun polymeric nanofibres as wound dressings: A review

Skin wounds have significant morbidity and mortality rates associated. This is explained by the limited effectiveness of the currently available treatments, which in some cases do not allow the reestablishment of the structure and functions of the damaged skin, leading to wound infection and dehydration. These drawbacks may have an impact on the healing process and ultimately prompt patients' death. For this reason, researchers are currently developing new wound dressings that enhance skin regeneration. Among them, electrospun polymeric nanofibres have been regarded as promising tools for improving skin regeneration due to their structural similarity with the extracellular matrix of normal skin, capacity to promote cell growth and proliferation and bactericidal activity as well as suitability to deliver bioactive molecules to the wound site. In this review, an overview of the recent studies concerning the production and evaluation of electrospun polymeric nanofibrous membranes for skin regenerative purposes is provided. Moreover, the current challenges and future perspectives of electrospun nanofibrous membranes suitable for this biomedical application are highlighted.

Core-Sheath Paraffin-Wax-Loaded Nanofibers by Electrospinning for Heat Storage

Paraffin wax (PW) is widely used for smart thermoregulation materials due to its good thermal performance. However, the leakage and low thermal conductivity of PW hinder its application in the heat storage field. Accordingly, developing effective methods to address these issues is of great importance. In this study, we explored a facile approach to obtain PW-loaded core-sheath structured flexible nanofibers films via coaxial electrospinning technique. The PW as the core layer was successfully encapsulated by the sheath-layer poly(methyl methacrylate). The diameter of the fiber core increased from 395 to 848 nm as the core solution speed rate increased from 0.1 to 0.5 mL/h. In addition, it can be seen that higher core solution speed rate could lead to higher PW encapsulation efficiency according to the transmission electron microscopy results. The core-sheath nanofiber films, moreover, possessed the highest latent heat of 58.25 J/g and solidifying enthalpy of -56.49 J/g. In addition, we found that after 200 thermal cycles, there was little change in latent heat, which demonstrated that it is beneficial for the PW-loaded core-sheath structure to overcome the leakage issue and enhance thermal stability properties for the thermoregulation film.

Adsorption of tetracycline antibiotics from an aqueous solution onto graphene oxide/calcium alginate composite fibers

In this study, we report the preparation of a novel environmentally friendly and highly efficient adsorbent, graphene oxide/calcium alginate (GO/CA) composite fibers, via a freeze-drying method using calcium chloride as a cross-linking reagent between graphene oxide and sodium alginate. The maximum tetracycline adsorption capacity of the GO/CA composite fibers predicted by the Langmuir model reached 131.6 mg g-1. The adsorption properties of tetracycline onto the fibers were investigated through several parameters including the solution pH, the adsorbent dose, the initial concentration of tetracycline, and the agitation time. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were used to investigate the adsorption equilibrium. The kinetics of the adsorption process was predicted using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic equations. Furthermore, the mechanism of adsorption was investigated, and it was found that the hydrogen bonding and π-π interaction should serve as predominant contributions to the significantly enhanced adsorption capability.

Synthesis, antitumor activity and molecular mechanism of doxorubicin conjugated trimethyl-chitosan polymeric micelle loading Beclin1 siRNA for drug-resisted bladder cancer therapy

Herein, we describe a convenient approach for the preparation of a polymeric micelle using doxorubicin (DOX) conjugated trimethyl-chitosan (TMC) with Beclin-1 siRNA (Si-Beclin1/DOX-TMC). This micelle displayed a potent capacity for autophagy inhibition and reversed drug-resistance to DOX in BIU-87/ADR cell lines. The Si-Beclin1/DOX-TMC micelle was highly cytotoxic to both drug-sensitive BIU-87 and drug-resistant BIU-87/ADR cells. Its capacity to reverse drug-resistance was dependent upon upregulation of autophagy levels in BIU-87/ADR cells. DOX was conjugated to TMC via a pH-sensitive Schiff base, which responded to the acidic lysosome microenvironment and resulted in the cytoplasmic release of DOX. The structure of DOX conjugation to the TMC polymeric micelle was characterized by NMR, GPC, TEM and DLS. DOX release profiles in different pH environment were determined by HPLC. Cellular uptake, changes to nuclei morphology and formation of autophagosomes were observed using a fluorescence microscope. Finally, in vivo antitumor activity of systemic Si-Beclin1/DOX-TMC micelle administration was evaluated in BIU-87/ADR xenograft models and Si-Beclin1/DOX-TMC micelles showed significantly suppressed tumor growth.

Small Molecular TGF-β1-Inhibitor-Loaded Electrospun Fibrous Scaffolds for Preventing Hypertrophic Scars

Hypertrophic scarring (HS) is a disorder that occurs during wound healing and seriously depresses the quality of human life. Scar-inhibiting scaffolds, though bringing promise to HS prevention, face problems such as the incompatibility of the scaffold materials and the instability of bioactive molecules. Herein, we present a TGF-β1-inhibitor-doped poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/gelatin (PG) coelectrospun nanofibrous scaffold (PGT) for HS prevention during wound healing. The appropriate ratio of PCL to gelatin can avoid individual defects of the two materials and achieve an optimized mechanical property and biocompatibility. The TGF-β1 inhibitor (SB-525334) is a small molecule and is highly stable during electrospinning and drug release processes. The PGT effectively inhibits fibroblast (the major cell type contributing to scar formation) proliferation in vitro and successfully prevents HS formation during the healing of full-thickness model wounds on rabbit ear. Our strategy offers an excellent solution for potential large-scale production of scaffolds for clinical HS prevention.

Polyethylenimine/silk fibroin multilayers deposited nanofibrics for cell culture

Scaffold with good three-dimensional (3D) structure and appropriate surface modification is essential to tissue regeneration in the treatment of tissue or organ failure. Silk fibroin (SF) is a promising scaffolding material with high biocompatibility, cytocompatibility, biodegradability and flexibility. In this study, positively charged polyethylenimine (PEI) and negatively charged SF assembled alternately onto cellulose nanofibrous substrates hydrolyzed from electrospun cellulose acetate nanofibrous mats. The obtained nanofibrous membranes modified with multiple layers of PEI/SF were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. L929 cells were applied to examine the cytocompatibility of PEI/SF coated membranes. The results demonstrated that the nanofibrous membranes after modification with multiple layers of PEI/SF maintained 3D nanofibrous structure, and cells cultured on them showed good adherence and spreading on them as well, which indicated that PEI/SF coated membranes had potential application in tissue engineering.

Characteristic Evaluation of Graphene Oxide for Bisphenol A Adsorption in Aqueous Solution

This paper investigates the characteristics of graphene oxide (GO) for Bisphenol A (BPA) adsorption in water. Batch experiments on the influence of significant parameters were performed. While an improvement of the adsorption capacity of BPA was obtained by the increment of contact time and the initial BPA concentration, the increment of pH above 8, GO dosage, and temperature showed the reverse results. The thermodynamic study suggested that BPA adsorption on GO was an exothermic and spontaneous process. The kinetics was explained by the pseudo-second-order model which covers all steps of adsorption. The fit of the results with the Langmuir isotherm indicated the monolayer adsorption. At 298 K, the adsorption reached equilibrium within 30 min with the maximum adsorption capacity of 49.26 mg/g. The low BPA adsorption capacity of GO can be interpreted by the occurrence of oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFGs) that are able to form hydrogen bonds with the surrounding OCFGs and water molecules. This effect inhibited the role of π–π interactions that are mainly responsible for the adsorption of BPA.

Investigation of polylactide/poly(ε-caprolactone)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes electrospun nanofibers with surface texture

The surface texture of PLA/PCL nanofibers was caused by the formation of voids and elongation in electric field. The MWCNTs reduced the sizes of PCL phase in PLA matrix.

Chitosan/organic rectorite nanocomposites rapidly synthesized by microwave irradiation: effects of chitosan molecular weight

Chitosans with high and low molecular weight were intercalated into organic rectorite to prepare nanocomposites via a microwave irradiation method for 75 min, which was much more efficient than the conventional 48 h heating method.
