Abstract
Herein, the synthesis of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) via the simple heating of cheap and readily available urea as the starting material has been reported. The catalytic activity of the prepared g-C3N4 was investigated for the synthesis of chromeno[2,3-b]pyridine and benzylpyrazolyl coumarin derivatives in an ethanol medium. The reactions were performed under mild conditions to achieve widely functionalized target products in a one-pot operation. The as-synthesized g-C3N4, being a heterogeneous catalyst, demonstrates excellent recyclability up to the 5th consecutive run without a significant decrease in its catalytic activity and yield of the product. A gram-scale reaction was performed to demonstrate the industrial applications of the present protocol. The green chemistry metrics such as environmental factor (E-factor), atom economy (AE), carbon efficiency (CE), and reaction mass efficiency (RME) were calculated and found to be very close to the ideal values. Additionally, operation simplicity, wide substrate scope, easy reusability of the catalyst, and avoidance of metal contamination in the products drive the process toward green and sustainable development.

Abstract
Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) have been gaining significance and attention over the past decade because of their ability to furnish complex products by using readily available and simple starting materials while simultaneously eliminating the need to separate and purify any intermediates. More so, most of these products have been found to exhibit diverse biological activities. Another paradigm shift which has occurred contemporarily is the switch to heterogeneous catalysis, which results in additional benefits such as the reduction of waste and an increase in the safety of the process. More importantly, it allows the user to recover and reuse the catalyst for multiple runs. In summary, both methodologies adhere to the principles of green chemistry, a philosophy which needs to become overarchingly enshrined. The plethora of reactions and catalysts which have been developed gives hope that chemists are slowly changing their ideology. As a result, this review attempts to discuss multicomponent reactions catalysed by operationally heterogeneous catalysts in the past 10 years. In this review, a further distinction is made between the MCRs which lead to the formation of heterocycles and those which do not.

Abstract
A preliminary study of 2-amino-4-aryl-3,5-dicarbonitrile-6-thiopyridines as new potential antimicrobial drugs was performed. Special emphasis was placed on the selection of the structure of target pyridine derivatives with the highest biological activity against different types of Gram-stained bacteria by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Herein, Escherichia coli model strains K12 (without LPS in its structure) and R2–R4 (with different lengths of LPS in its structure) were used. Studied target compounds were provided with yields ranging from 53% to 91% by the lipase-catalyzed one pot multicomponent reaction of various aromatic aldehydes with malononitrile, and thiols. The presented work showed that the antibacterial activity of the studied pyridines depends on their structure and affects the LPS of bacteria. Moreover, the influence of the pyridines on bacteria possessing smooth and rough LPS and oxidative damage to plasmid DNA caused by investigated compounds was indicated. Additionally, the modification of the bacterial DNA with the tested compounds was performed to detect new potential oxidative damages, which are recognized by the Fpg protein. The obtained damage modification values of the analyzed compounds were compared with the modifications after antibiotics were used in this type of research. The presented studies demonstrate that 2-amino-4-aryl-3,5-dicarbonitrile-6-thiopyridines can be used as substitutes for known antibiotics. The observed results are especially important in the case of the increasing resistance of bacteria to various drugs and antibiotics.

Abstract
This review integrates the published data of the last decade (from 2010 to 2020) on the synthesis of the 2-amino-3,5-dicarbonitrile-6-sulfanylpyridine scaffold, the derivatives of which are widely used in the synthesis of biologically active compounds. Currently, no systematic accounts of synthetic routes towards this class of heterocyclic compounds can be found in the literature. The present-day trends in the catalytic synthesis of 2-amino-3,5-dicarbonitrile-6-sulfanylpyridines are considered using pseudo-four-component reaction (pseudo-4CR) by condensation of malononitrile molecules with thiols and aldehydes, and alternative three-component (3CR) condensations of malononitrile with 2-arylidenemalononitrile and S-nucleophiles. The latest advances in the catalytic synthesis of biologically active compounds with 2-amino-3,5-dicarbonitrile-6-sulfanylpyridine scaffold via the multicomponent reactions of malononitrile have been discussed.![]()

Abstract
Heterocycles have been found to be of much importance as several nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocycle compounds exist amongst the various USFDA-approved drugs. Because of the advancement of nanotechnology, nanocatalysis has found abundant applications in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. Numerous nanoparticles (NPs) have been utilized for several organic transformations, which led us to make dedicated efforts for the complete coverage of applications of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds reported from 2010 to 2019. Our emphasize during the coverage of catalyzed reactions of the various MNPs such as Ag, Au, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Si, Ti, and Zn has not only been on nanoparticles catalyzed synthetic transformations for the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds, but also provide an inherent framework for the reader to select a suitable catalytic system of interest for the synthesis of desired heterocyclic scaffold.

Abstract
SnO particles were synthesized by an alkali-assisted hydrothermal and microwave methods. The aqueous-based reactions were carried out at pH ~ 8, under inert atmosphere (Ar). The reactions were taken under different times, and a full XRD structural analysis was made to evaluate the conversion from the Sn6O4(OH)4 intermediate to SnO particles. Williamson-Hall analysis showed that the size and strain of the SnO particles were time and route treatment dependent. Microwave heating yielded a single tetragonal SnO phase after 1 h of thermal treatment, and TEM images revealed spherical-shaped SnO nanoparticles with an average size of 9(1) nm. While by the hydrothermal treatment single SnO phase was obtained only after 4 hours, yielding non-uniform and elongated particles with sub-micrometric size. A dissolution-recrystallization process was taken into account as the mechanism for SnO particles formation, in which hydroxylated complexes, Sn2(OH)6−2, then condense to form the oxide. The time-shorting reaction provided by the microwave-assisted synthesis may be attributed to better heat distribution.

Abstract
Crosslinked sulfonated polyacrylamide (Cross-PAA-SO3H) attached to nano-Fe3O4 as a superior catalyst has been used for the synthesis of 3-alkyl-4-phenyl-1,3-thiazole-2(3H)-thione derivatives through a three-component reactions of phenacyl bromide or 4-methoxyphenacyl bromide, carbon disulfide and primary amine under reflux condition in ethanol. A proper, atom-economical, straightforward one-pot multicomponent synthetic route for the synthesis of 1,3-thiazoles in good yields has been devised using crosslinked sulfonated polyacrylamide (Cross-PAA-SO3H) tethered to nano-Fe3O4. The catalyst has been characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM).

Abstract
A three-component reaction involving aromatic aldehydes, 6-amino-1,3-dimethyluracil and 4-hydroxycoumarin was achieved in the presence of the Co3O4/NiO@GQD@SO3H nanocomposite as a highly effective heterogeneous catalyst to produce chromenpyrimidines. The catalyst was characterized via FT-IR, SEM, XRD, EDS, TGA, BET and VSM. This new catalyst was demonstrated to be highly effective in the preparation of chromenpyrimidines. Atom economy, low catalyst loading, reusable catalyst, applicability to a wide range of substrates and high product yields are some of the important features of this protocol. A flexible and highly efficient protocol for the synthesis of chromenpyrimidines using the Co3O4/NiO@GQD@SO3H nanocomposite has been developed.![]()

Abstract
Pico sized Stannous oxide particles (SnO PPs) were synthesized in an ethanol-water solvent system on the surface of nitrogen doped graphene oxide (GO). The highly conductive support was a combination of dual interactions between 4-aminomethylbenzylamine (AMBA) and GO. The oppositely positioned -NH2 linkers of the AMBA were covalently incorporated into the GO matrix through condensation reaction followed by the strong π - π stacking interactions between aromatic rings of AMBA and GO. The change in the local chemical environment of GO via dual interactions provided a suitable atmosphere for the growth and dispersion of SnO PPs on GO-AMBA surface. The possible mechanism for the formation of SnO in an ethanol-water solvent system was evaluated. Furthermore, a light was shed on the factors responsible for the pico size of SnO particles synthesis along with its phenomenal distribution on the GO-AMBA surface. The catalyst containing SnO PPs was deployed as a biosensor for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA) for the very first time. A very wide linear range of 5.0 × 10-5-7.0 × 10-3 M, limit of detection (LOD) of 1.19 × 10-5 M along with excellent practical feasibility, storage stability, repeatability and selectivity towards AA electrooxidation showed the excellent synergy between nitrogen-rich GO surface and SnO PPs. The sensitivity (885.54 µAmM-1cm-2) of the catalyst was the most attractive feature, as it was obtained in the presence of 5 and 2-fold higher concentration of UA and DA interfering species respectively.

Abstract
Atomically thin semiconductors are one of the fastest growing categories in materials science due to their promise to enable high-performance electronic and optical devices. Furthermore, a host of intriguing phenomena have been reported to occur when a semiconductor is confined within two dimensions. However, the synthesis of large area atomically thin materials remains as a significant technological challenge. Here we report a method that allows harvesting monolayer of semiconducting stannous oxide nanosheets (SnO) from the interfacial oxide layer of liquid tin. The method takes advantage of van der Waals forces occurring between the interfacial oxide layer and a suitable substrate that is brought into contact with the molten metal. Due to the liquid state of the metallic precursor, the surface oxide sheet can be delaminated with ease and on a large scale. The SnO monolayer is determined to feature p-type semiconducting behavior with a bandgap of ∼4.2 eV. Field effect transistors based on monolayer SnO are demonstrated. The synthetic technique is facile, scalable and holds promise for creating atomically thin semiconductors at wafer scale.

Abstract
A concise, efficient one-pot synthesis of functionalized chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine derivatives via a three-component reaction of 4-oxo-4H-chromene-3-carbaldehydes, malononitrile or cyanoacetates, and aromatic amines under catalyst-free conditions in an environmentally friendly medium (ethanol-water, 3:1 v/v) is described. This synthesis involves a group-assisted purification process, which avoids traditional recrystallization and chromatographic purification methods.

Abstract
The preparation of seven β-acetamido esters, two of which are novel, has been achieved by a one-pot condensation reaction of an araldehyde, ethyl acetoacetate and acetyl chloride in the presence of CeO2 nanoparticles under reflux conditions in acetonitrile. This method provides several advantages including easy workup, excellent yields, short reaction times, diastereoselective synthesis, reusability of the catalyst and low catalyst loading.

Abstract
The development of transparent p-type oxide semiconductors with good performance may be a true enabler for a variety of applications where transparency, power efficiency, and greater circuit complexity are needed. Such applications include transparent electronics, displays, sensors, photovoltaics, memristors, and electrochromics. Hence, here, recent developments in materials and devices based on p-type oxide semiconductors are reviewed, including ternary Cu-bearing oxides, binary copper oxides, tin monoxide, spinel oxides, and nickel oxides. The crystal and electronic structures of these materials are discussed, along with approaches to enhance valence-band dispersion to reduce effective mass and increase mobility. Strategies to reduce interfacial defects, off-state current, and material instability are suggested. Furthermore, it is shown that promising progress has been made in the performance of various types of devices based on p-type oxides. Several innovative approaches exist to fabricate transparent complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices, including novel device fabrication schemes and utilization of surface chemistry effects, resulting in good inverter gains. However, despite recent developments, p-type oxides still lag in performance behind their n-type counterparts, which have entered volume production in the display market. Recent successes along with the hurdles that stand in the way of commercial success of p-type oxide semiconductors are presented.

Abstract
A novel series of 5H-chromenopyridines was identified as anticancer agents in our continuing effort to discover and develop new small molecule anti-proliferative agents. Based on our initial lead SP-6-27 compound, we designed and synthesized novel tricyclic 5H-thiochromenopyridine and 5H-chromenopyridine analogs to evaluate the impact of an additional ring, as well as conformational flexibility on cytotoxic activity against human melanoma and glioma cell lines. All of the 5H-thiochromenopyridines have been achieved in good yields (89%–93%) using a single-step, three-component cyclization without the need for purification. The 5H-chromenopyridine analog of the potent 5H-thiochromenopyride was obtained in a good yield upon purification. All newly-prepared 5H-thiochromenopyridines showed good to moderate cytotoxicity against three melanoma and two glioma cell lines (3–15 μM). However, the 5H-chromenopyridine analogue that we prepared in our laboratory lost cytotoxic activity. The moderate cytotoxic activity of 5H-thiochromenopyridines shows the promise of developing chromenopyridines as potential anticancer agents.
