Enhancing silk fibroin structures and applications through angle-dependent Ar+ plasma treatment

This study tackles limitations of Silk Fibroin (SF), including availability of sites for modification. This is achieved by Direct Plasma Nanosynthesis (DPNS), an Ar+ bombardment method, to generate and modify nanostructures and nanoscale properties on the SF surface. SF samples were treated with DPNS at incidence angles of 45o and 60o, with specific ion dose and energy parameters (1 × 1018 ions/cm2 and 500 eV, respectively) maintained throughout the process. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) primarily underscored transformations in SF's nitrogenous components. Specifically, treatment produced a boost in C-NH2, particularly pronounced in the 45o-treated samples, suggesting changes were more superficial than alterations to the secondary structure. The DPNS treatment gave rise to periodic nanocone structures on the SF surface, with a scale increase correlated to a higher angle of incidence. This resulted in a decrease in surface stiffness and significant changes in the motility of J774 macrophages interacting with the transformed SF. Furthermore, the SF samples treated at a 60o incidence showcased a confinement effect, moderating the macrophages' motility, morphology, and inflammatory response. The DPNS-induced alterations not only mitigate SF's limitations but also affect cellular behavior, expanding potential for SF in biomaterials.

Metachronal patterns by magnetically-programmable artificial cilia surfaces for low Reynolds number fluid transport and mixing

Motile cilia can produce net fluid flows at low Reynolds number because of their asymmetric motion and metachrony of collective beating. Mimicking this with artificial cilia can find application in microfluidic devices for fluid transport and mixing. Here, we study the metachronal beating of nonidentical, magnetically-programmed artificial cilia whose individual non-reciprocal motion and collective metachronal beating pattern can be independently controlled. We use a finite element method that accounts for magnetic forces, cilia deformation and fluid flow in a fully coupled manner. Mimicking biological cilia, we study magnetic cilia subject to a full range of metachronal driving patterns, including antiplectic, symplectic, laeoplectic and diaplectic waves. We analyse the induced primary flow, secondary flow and mixing rate as a function of the phase lag between cilia and explore the underlying physical mechanism. Our results show that shielding effects between neighboring cilia lead to a primary flow that is larger for antiplectic than for symplectic metachronal waves. The secondary flow can be fully explained by the propagation direction of the metachronal wave. Finally, we show that the mixing rate can be strongly enhanced by laeoplectic and diaplectic metachrony resulting in large velocity gradients and vortex-like flow patterns.

High-performance polymer dry adhesives based on ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer and high-adhesion mechanism

We have proposed a new soft replication fabrication method to fabricate mushroom-shaped dry adhesives with excellent high adhesion, and analyzed its performance and mechanism by taking into consideration the microstructure deformation. The large Young's modulus of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer (48.0 MPa) together with rational structure design contribute to easy demolding as well as strong adhesion. The fabricated EVA dry adhesives exhibited strong normal adhesion up to 70 N/cm $^{\mathbf {2}}$, which is one of the best records reported for polymer-based dry adhesives by far. Flexible and transparent EVA dry adhesive films were readily microfabricated through our soft replication method in an inexpensive and high-throughput manner, which enables low-cost adhesive coatings for various substrates and shapes.. In addition, the non-wetting characteristics to repel water and oil makes it promising for robust self-cleaning and reusability. These results may shed new lights for the mass-production of dry adhesives, and to understand the reversible adhesion/detachment mechanism.

Fabrication of directional nanopillars with high-aspect-ratio using a stretching imprint process with a microcavity mold

Directional nanopillars with high-aspect-ratio have wide applications in home or industrial appliances and biomimetic robots. Their fabrication, however, is a challenge for conventional methods. In this study, we propose a simple stretching imprint process to prepare controllable directional (30°-90° in a slanted angle) nanopillars (200-800 nm in diameter) with high aspect ratio (>30) using a microcavity mold, beyond the conventional nanoimprint process, for 1 : 1 pattern transfer from the mold to the replica. The mechanism of the stretching imprint process is further investigated, and a rheology model for the filament evolution during the stretching process is established, which clearly shows that the aspect-ratio, diameter in submicrons, slanted angle, and also the tip profile of the free-standing nanopillars can be easily controlled by the imprint process using a microcavity mold. Further experiments indicate that the fabricated directional free-standing nanopillars show strong friction anisotropy, which may find applications in biomimetic studies.

Designs and processes toward high-aspect-ratio nanostructures at the deep nanoscale: unconventional nanolithography and its applications

The patterning of high-resolution-featured deep-nanoscale structures with a high aspect ratio (AR) has received increasing attention in recent years as a promising technique for a wide range of applications, including electrical, optical, mechanical and biological systems. Despite extensive efforts to develop viable nanostructure fabrication processes, a superior technique enabling defect-free, high-resolution control over a large area is still required. In this review, we focus on recent important advances in the designs and processes of high-resolution nanostructures possessing a high AR, including hierarchical and 3D patterns. The unique applications of these materials are also discussed.

Performance Characteristics of Bio-Inspired Metal Nanostructures as Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattered (SERS) Substrates

The fabrication of high-performance plasmonic nanomaterials for bio-sensing and trace chemical detection is a field of intense theoretical and experimental research. The use of metal-silicon nanopillar arrays as analytical sensors has been reported with reasonable results in recent years. The use of bio-inspired nanocomposite structures that follow the Fibonacci numerical architecture offers the opportunity to develop nanostructures with theoretically higher and more reproducible plasmonic fields over extended areas. The work presented here describes the nanofabrication process for a series of 40 µm × 40 µm bio-inspired arrays classified as asymmetric fractals (sunflower seeds and romanesco broccoli), bilaterally symmetric (acacia leaves and honeycombs), and radially symmetric (such as orchids and lily flowers) using electron beam lithography. In addition, analytical capabilities were evaluated using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The substrate characterization and SERS performance of the developed substrates as the strategies to assess the design performance are presented and discussed.
