Enzyme-/metal-free quinoxaline assemblies: direct light-up detection of cholesterol in human serum

Supramolecular assemblies of quinoxaline derivative (QxPyA) have been developed for turn-on detection of cholesterol in human serum and in aqueous media with a detection limit of 4 nM.

Highly emissive supramolecular gold(I)-BTD materials

Herein we report the synthesis of three light emitting rod-shaped gold(I) complexes by combining ethynyl-functionalized 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD), with different N-heterocyclic (imidazole, benzimidazole and phenantroimidazole) carbene gold(I) complexes. As could be determined by single crystal structure determination, the size of the N-heterocyclic carbene affects the relative disposition of the two ligands in the linear gold complexes (nearly perpendicular in the benzimidazole vs. planar in the phenantroimidazole derivative) which translates to different types of interactions between neighbouring units. In fact, the planar conformation in the more π-extended phenantroimidazole carbene allows Au(I) atoms to get sufficiently closer favouring aurophilic interactions. This compound is obtained as two different colour emitting solids which is ascribed to changes in packing modes probably leading to differences in the strength of aurophilic interactions. Interestingly, while the emission in the solid state is almost quenched, the incorporation of the compounds in polymer matrixes enhances the emissive properties of the compounds reaching near unity quantum yields.

Recent Trends in the Design, Synthesis, Spectroscopic Behavior, and Applications of Benzazole-Based Molecules with Solid-State Luminescence Enhancement Properties

Molecules that exhibit solid-state luminescence enhancement, i.e. the rare property to be more strongly emissive in the solid state than in solution, find an increasing number of applications in the fields of optoelectronic and nanophotonic devices, sensors, security papers, imaging, and theranostics. Benzazole (BZ) heterocycles are of particular value in this context. The simple enlargement of their π-electron system using a -C=C-Ar or -N=C-Ar moiety is enough for intrinsic solid-state luminescence enhancement (SLE) properties to appear. Their association with a variety of polyaromatic motifs leads to SLE-active molecules that frequently display attractive electroluminescent properties and are sensitive to mechanical stimuli. The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process that takes place in some hydroxy derivatives reinforces the SLE effect and enables the development of new sensors based on a protection/deprotection strategy. BZ may also be incorporated into frameworks that are prototypical aggregation-induced enhancement (AIE) luminogens, such as the popular tetraphenylethene (TPE), leading to materials with excellent optical and electroluminescent performance. This review encompasses the various ways to use BZ units in SLE systems. It underlines the significant progresses recently made in the understanding of the photophysical mechanisms involved. A brief overview of the synthesis shows that BZ units are robust building blocks, easily incorporated into a variety of structures. Generally speaking, we try to show how these small heterocycles may offer advantages for the design of increasingly efficient luminescent materials.

Unexpectedly Long Lifetime of the Excited State of Benzothiadiazole Derivative and Its Adducts with Lewis Acids

We report a study of photoluminescent properties of 4-bromo-7-(3-pyridylamino)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (Py-btd) and its novel Lewis adducts: (PyH-btd)₂(ZnCl₄) and [Cu₂Cl₂(Py-btd)₂{PPO}₂]·2C₇H₈ (PPO = tetraphenyldiphosphine monoxide), whose crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Py-btd exhibits a lifetime of 9 microseconds indicating its phosphorescent nature, which is rare for purely organic compounds. This phenomenon arises from the heavy atom effect: the presence of a bromine atom in Py-btd promotes mixing of the singlet and triplet states to allow efficient singlet-to-triplet intersystem crossing. The Lewis adducts also feature a microsecond lifetime while emitting in a higher energy range than free Py-btd, which opens up the possibility to color-tune luminescence of benzothiadiazole derivatives.

A rod-shaped self-assembling diacetylene-linked bis-benzothiadiazole derivative presents a high contrast luminescence phase transformation upon shearing which is reversed upon heating.

Stimuli-Responsive Benzothiadiazole Derivative as a Dopant for Rewritable Polymer Blends

A new rod-shaped benzothiadiazole fluorophore, namely, 4,7-di-(4-nonylphenyl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole, which strongly emits fluorescence both in solution and in solid state has been synthesized, and its photophysical properties were rationalized with the help of density functional theory calculations. This molecule crystallizes in two distinct light-emitting crystalline phases, which can be interconverted in response to pressure, temperature, and solvent vapors. Powder X-ray diffraction indicates that in both polymorph, molecules adopt a lamellar packing, the different interlayer spacing being the main difference between the two structures. Single-crystal analysis of one of the polymorphs allows us to identify weak interaction planes, which presumably facilitates the polymorphic transformation through mechanically or thermally induced sliding processes. The polymorphic transformation and the origin of the switchable fluorescence have been rationalized through a spectroscopic and theoretical study. This study suggests that the different colors observed are due to different intermolecular aromatic interactions owing to the displacement of the molecules with respect to the layer normal. Interestingly, blending this molecule with a biodegradable polymer such as poly(vinyl alcohol) gives rise to a thermally activated reversible switchable fluorescent system, which entitles this material as an attractive candidate for technological applications, such as thermal sensors, security inks, or rewritable paper.

Multiresponsive Luminescent Cationic Cyclometalated Gold(III) Amphiphiles and Their Supramolecular Assembly

A new class of amphiphilic tridentate cyclometalated gold(III) complexes has been designed and synthesized as luminescent supramolecular building blocks. Positively charged trimethylammonium (-CH₂NMe₃⁺) containing alkynyl ligands have been incorporated to introduce the electrostatic interactions. The X-ray crystal structures of two of the complexes have been determined, and the existence of π-π interactions between molecules has been observed. Steady-state and time-resolved absorption and emission studies have been carried out to investigate the nature of the excited states. The complexes are found to exhibit self-assembly properties with the assistance of π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions and possibly weak Au···Au interaction, resulting in notable emergence of low-energy absorption bands and luminescence changes. The presence of a large hydrophobic moiety is found to be crucial for the formation of aggregates, especially in polar media where hydrophobic interactions play an important role. The nature of the counterion has been shown to have a significant effect on the extent of self-assembly in different media. Upon aggregation, nanofibers are formed in polar media, while nanorods are observed in nonpolar media in one of the representative complexes. Interestingly, a small modification on the alkynyl ligand resulted in the formation of nanoribbons instead. Intriguing luminescence mechanochromic properties have also been observed. This orthogonal and rational molecular design strategy has been shown to be effective in the construction of gold(III)-based smart and multiresponsive materials.

Multi-functional bis(alkynyl)gold(iii) N⁁C complexes with distinct mechanochromic luminescence and electroluminescence properties

A new class of highly luminescent bis(alkynyl)gold(iii) N⁁C complexes has been utilized as emissive materials in OLEDs and exhibits mechanochromic behaviors.

A new class of donor–acceptor type luminescent bis(alkynyl)gold(iii) N⁁C complexes has been synthesized and characterized. These gold(iii) complexes not only exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 0.81, but also interesting mechanochromic luminescence behaviors that are reversible. Upon grinding, a dramatic luminescence color change from green to red can be observed in solid samples of the gold(iii) complexes, and the mechanochromic luminescence can be readily tuned via a judicious selection of substituents on the pyridine ring. In addition, solution-processable OLEDs based on this class of complexes with EQE values of up to 4.0% have been realized, representing the first demonstration of bis(alkynyl)gold(iii) N⁁C complexes as emissive materials in solution-processable OLEDs.

Pyrene–fluorescein-based colour-tunable AIE-active hybrid fluorophore material for potential live cell imaging applications

A novel hybrid fluorophore (FHPY) has been synthesized based on two standard fluorescent hydrophobic–hydrophilic molecules, viz. pyrene and fluorescein, with an objective to tune the AIE along with the morphology and live cell imaging.

The influence of different N-substituted groups on the mechanochromic properties of 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives with simple structures

Four twisted 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives with simple structure were synthesized. N-Substituted groups were found to play a decisive role in determining whether or not these compounds have mechanochromic activities.

Mechanoresponsive Luminescent Molecular Assemblies: An Emerging Class of Materials

The possibility to change the molecular assembled structures of organic and organometallic materials through mechanical stimulation is emerging as a general and powerful concept for the design of functional materials. In particular, the photophysical properties such as photoluminescence color, quantum yield, and emission lifetime of organic and organometallic fluorophores can significantly depend on the molecular packing, enabling the development of molecular materials with mechanoresponsive luminescence characteristics. Indeed, an increasing number of studies have shown in recent years that mechanical force can be utilized to change the molecular arrangement, and thereby the optical response, of luminescent molecular assemblies of π-conjugated organic or organometallic molecules. Here, the development of such mechanoresponsive luminescent (MRL) molecular assemblies consisting of organic or organometallic molecules is reviewed and emerging trends in this research field are summarized. After a brief introduction of mechanoresponsive luminescence observed in molecular assemblies, the concept of "luminescent molecular domino" is introduced, before molecular materials that show turn-on/off of photoluminescence in response to mechanical stimulation are reviewed. Mechanically stimulated multicolor changes and water-soluble MRL materials are also highlighted and approaches that combine the concept of MRL molecular assemblies with other materials types are presented in the last part of this progress report.

Very bright mechanoluminescence and remarkable mechanochromism using a tetraphenylethene derivative with aggregation-induced emission

Organic materials exhibiting mechanoluminescence (ML) are promising for usage in displays, lighting and sensing. However, the mechanism for ML generation remains unclear, and the light-emitting performance of organic ML materials in the solid state has been severely limited by an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. Herein, we present two strongly photoluminescent polymorphs (i.e., Cg and Cb) with distinctly different ML activities based on a tetraphenylethene derivative P4TA. As an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) emitter, P4TA perfectly surmounted the ACQ, making the resultant block-like crystals in the Cg phase exhibit brilliant green ML under daylight at room temperature. The ML-inactive prism-like crystals Cb can also have their ML turned on by transitioning toward Cg with the aid of dichloromethane vapor. Moreover, the Cg polymorph shows ML and mechanochromism simultaneously and respectively without and with UV irradiation under a force stimulus, thus suggesting a feasible design direction for the development of efficient and multifunctional ML materials.
