Biocatalytic synthesis of oxa(thia)diazole aryl thioethers

A novel approach for the synthesis of 1,3,4-oxa(thia)diazole aryl thioethers through a biocatalytic strategy has been introduced. By leveraging Myceliophthora thermophila laccase (Novozym 51003) as a catalyst, catechol undergoes oxidation to ortho-quinone, facilitating subsequent 1,4-thia-Michael addition reactions. The method offers efficiency and mild reaction conditions, demonstrating promise for sustainable synthesis pathways in organic chemistry. Using this approach, 13 new derivatives of 2,5-disubstituted-1,3,4-oxa(thia)diazole aryl thioethers, with a yield of 46-94%, were synthesized.

Bidentate Ligand Driven Intramolecularly Te…O Bonded Organotellurium Cations from Synthesis, Stability to Catalysis

A new series of unsymmetrical phenyl tellurides derived from 2-N-(quinolin-8-yl) benzamide ligand has been synthesized in a practical manner by the copper-catalyzed method by using diaryl ditelluride and Mg as a reductant at room temperature. In order to augment the Lewis acidity of these newly formed unsymmetrical monotellurides, these have been transformed into corresponding unsymmetrical 2-N-(quinolin-8-yl)benzamide tellurium cations. Subsequently, these Lewis acidic tellurium cations were used as chalcogen bonding catalysts, enabling the synthesis of various substituted 1,2-dihydroquinolines by activating ketones with anilines under mild conditions. Moreover, the synthesized 2-N-(quinolin-8-yl)benzamide phenyl tellurium cation has also catalyzed the formation of β-amino alcohols in high regioselectivity by effectively activating epoxides at room temperature. Mechanistic insight by 1 H and 19 F NMR study, electrostatic surface potential (ESP map), control reaction in which tellurium cation reacted explosively with epoxide, suggested that the enhanced Lewis acidity of tellurium center seems responsible for efficient catalytic activities under mild conditions enabling β-amino alcohols with excellent regioselectivity and 1,2-dihydroquinolines with trifluoromethyl, nitro, and pyridylsubstitution, which were difficult to access.

Catalyst- and metal-free C(sp2)-H bond selenylation of (N-hetero)-arenes using diselenides and trichloroisocyanuric acid at room temperature

In this paper, we report an eco-friendly approach for the C(sp2)-H bond selenylation of imidazopyridines and other N-heteroarenes as well as simple arenes at ambient temperature. This new protocol consists of the reaction between (N-hetero)-arenes and the diorganyl-diselenides and trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA)-ethanol reagent system. In a short reaction time, the desired selenylated products were obtained regioselectively in good yields, with tolerance for a wide range of functional groups.

Regioselective C-H chalcogenylation and halogenation of arenes and alkenes under metal-free conditions

The reactions of direct Csp²-H chalcogenylation and halogenation of N-arylpyrrolidone under the action of PIFA without a directing group and under metal-free conditions were reported in this paper. Diphenyl selenide/sulfur and selenium phenyl halides were used as reaction reagents to obtain chalcogenylated and halogenated N-arylpyrrolidone products, respectively. The mechanistic studies indicated that a radical pathway was likely involved in these reactions. Preliminary antitumor tests showed that these compounds have moderate to potent activities against human acute leukemia cells K562 in vitro, which may be used as lead compounds for subsequent research.

Diorganyl diselenides: a powerful tool for the construction of selenium containing scaffolds

Organoselenium compounds find versatile applications in organic synthesis, materials synthesis, and ligand chemistry. Organoselenium heterocycles are widely studied agents with diverse applications in various biological processes. This review highlights the recent progress in the synthesis of selenium heterocycles using diorganyl diselenides with keen attention on green synthetic approaches, scopes, C-H selanylation, the mechanisms of different reactions and insights into the formation of metal complexes. The C-H selanylation using diorganyl diselenides with different catalysts, bases, transition metals, iodine salts, NIS, hypervalent iodine, and other reagents is summarised. Finally, the diverse binding modes of bis(2/4-pyridyl)diselenide with different metal complexes are also summarised.

Catalytic Antioxidant Activity of Bis-Aniline-Derived Diselenides as GPx Mimics

Herein, we describe a simple and efficient route to access aniline-derived diselenides and evaluate their antioxidant/GPx-mimetic properties. The diselenides were obtained in good yields via ipso-substitution/reduction from the readily available 2-nitroaromatic halides (Cl, Br, I). These diselenides present GPx-mimetic properties, showing better antioxidant activity than the standard GPx-mimetic compounds, ebselen and diphenyl diselenide. DFT analysis demonstrated that the electronic properties of the substituents determine the charge delocalization and the partial charge on selenium, which correlate with the catalytic performances. The amino group concurs in the stabilization of the selenolate intermediate through a hydrogen bond with the selenium.

KIO4 -mediated Selective Hydroxymethylation/Methylenation of Imidazo-Heteroarenes: A Greener Approach

Herein, we report a KIO₄ -mediated, sustainable and chemoselective approach for the one-pot C(sp² )-H bond hydroxymethylation or methylenation of imidazo-heteroarenes with formaldehyde, generated in situ via the oxidative cleavage of ethylene glycol or glycerol (renewable reagents) through the Malaprade reaction. In the presence of ethylene glycol, a series of 3-hydroxymethyl-imidazo-heteroarenes was obtained in good to excellent yields. These compounds are important intermediates to access pharmaceutical drugs, e.g., Zolpidem. Furthermore, by using glycerol, bis(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-3-yl)methane derivatives were selectively obtained in good to excellent yields.

Synthetic strategies for aryl/heterocyclic selenides and tellurides under transition-metal-catalyst free conditions

Aryl and heteroaryl selenides and tellurides are found to have broad applications in the diverse fields such as medicine, biology, materials science, pharmaceutical etc. and thus their synthesis remains a challenging field for synthetic chemists in last decade. Although a large no of methodologies have been developed based on metal catalyzed C-Se/Te coupling, a large number of researches has been focused on developing metal catalyst free protocols due to their sustainability in recent times. This review covers all the recent developments in last decade on their synthesis under metal catalyst free conditions by using different sustainable techniques e.g. greener reagents and solvents, ball milling, visible light photocatalysis, microwave, ultrasound etc.

Borophosphate glass as an active media for CuO nanoparticle growth: an efficient catalyst for selenylation of oxadiazoles and application in redox reactions

Herein, we report the preparation of CuO@ borophosphate nanoparticles (CuOnano@glass) and their wide catalytic applications. The glass annealing, under a controlled atmosphere, enables the growth of copper nanoparticles on the glass surface (not within) by an uncommon bottom-up process. Following the thermal annealing of metallic nanoparticles under air atmosphere, supported copper oxide nanoparticles CuONPs on the glass surface can be obtained. The approach enables the glass matrix to be explored as a precursor and a route for the synthesis of supported copper-based nanoparticles in a solvent-free process without immobilization steps or stabilizing agents. In order to demonstrate the wide synthetic utility of this CuONPs glass-based catalyst, one-pot three-component domino reactions were performed under an air atmosphere, affording the desired selenylated oxadiazoles in good to excellent yields. We also extended the application of these new materials as a glass-based catalyst in the phenol hydroxylation and the reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

Selenylated-oxadiazoles as promising DNA intercalators: Synthesis, electronic structure, DNA interaction and cleavage

A series of selenylated-oxadiazoles were prepared and their interaction with DNA was investigated. The photophysical studies showed that all the selenylated compounds presented absorption between 270 and 329 nm, assigned to combined n→π* and π→π* transitions, and an intense blue emission (325-380 nm) with quantum yield in the range of Φ _F = 0.1-0.4. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were also performed to study the likely geometry and the excited state of these compounds. Electrochemical studies revealed the ionization potential energies (-5.13 to -6.01 eV) and electron affinity energies (-2.25 to -2.83 eV), depending directly on the electronic effect (electron-donating or electron-withdrawing) of the substituent attached to the product. Finally, the UV-Vis DNA interaction experiments indicated that the compounds can interact with the DNA molecule due to intercalation, except for 3g (which interacted via electrostatic interaction). Plasmid cleavage assay presented positive results only for 3f that presented the strongest interaction results. These results made the tested selenylated-oxadiazoles as suitable structures for the development of drugs and the design of structurally-related therapeutics.

Transition metal catalysed direct selanylation of arenes and heteroarenes

Transition metal catalysed C-H functionalization has reached an exciting level of sophistication, and, today, it represents a paradigm shift from the standard logic of synthetic chemistry. The direct conversion of C-H bonds into C-heteroatoms remains, however, a critical challenge. Nowadays, there is a great demand in general synthetic chemistry in, for example, the materials science for the development of straightforward C-Se bond formation, in order to fulfil the practical requirements. In this sense, this review summarizes recent outstanding advances in the C-Se bond formation through transition metal-catalysed direct selanylation, providing new insights into their mechanistic aspects and disclosing effective synthetic routes with high atom economy. In addition, this review intends to show the growing opportunities to construct complex chemical scaffolds containing selenium atoms.

Rose Bengal catalysed photo-induced selenylation of indoles, imidazoles and arenes: a metal free approach

A photo-induced, metal-free strategy was used for the direct C(sp²)–H bond selenylation of indoles, imidazoles and arenes using Rose Bengal as a photocatalyst.

Copper-Catalyzed Synthesis of Unsymmetrical Diorganyl Chalcogenides (Te/Se/S) from Boronic Acids under Solvent-Free Conditions

The efficient and mild copper-catalyzed synthesis of unsymmetrical diorganyl chalcogenides under ligand- and solvent-free conditions is described. The cross-coupling reaction was performed using aryl boric acids and 0.5 equiv. of diorganyl dichalcogenides (Te/Se/S) in the presence of 3 mol % of CuI and 3 equiv. of DMSO, under microwave irradiation. This new protocol allowed the preparation of several unsymmetrical diorganyl chalcogenides in good to excellent yields.

Metal- and Solvent-Free Approach to Access 3-Se/S-Chromones from the Cyclization of Enaminones in the Presence of Dichalcogenides Catalyzed by KIO3

Herein, we describe a greener protocol for the one-pot synthesis of 3-Se/S-4H-chromen-4-ones. The desired products were obtained in good to excellent yields using 2-hydroxyphenyl enaminones and half equivalents of various odorless diorganyl dichalcogenides (S/Se) in the presence of glycerol (5 molar equiv) and KIO3 (15 mol %) as the catalyst under solvent-free conditions.

Palladium-catalysed direct thiolation and selenation of aryl C–H bonds assisted by directing groups

Recent advances on transition-metal-catalyzed direct chalcogenation of C–H bonds with disulfides and diselenides are summarized.

Regioselective transition metal- and halogen-free direct dithiolation at C(sp3)–H of nitrotoluenes with diaryl disulfides

Here we describe a potassium tert-butoxide-mediated regioselective direct C–S bond formation at the C(sp³)–H position of nitrotoluenes with disulfides in DMSO at room temperature. The developed reaction generated various dithioacetals in good yields. Further, synthesized dithioacetals were transformed into 4-nitrobenzaldehyde and 7-(bis(phenylthio)methyl)-1H-indole.

DMSO/iodine-catalyzed oxidative C–Se/C–S bond formation: a regioselective synthesis of unsymmetrical chalcogenides with nitrogen- or oxygen-containing arenes

A convenient metal-free and solvent-free iodine-catalyzed regioselective greener protocol to access different types of unsymmetrical chalcogenides with nitrogen- or oxygen-containing arenes through oxidative C–Se/C–S formation via direct C(sp²)–H bond activation was developed.
