Synthesis of Ag@AgCl/CA and Visible-Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Oxtetracycline

Chemical coupling, in-situ deposition of supported AgCl, and photoreduction were used to create Ag@AgCl/CA. The morphology, structure, and surface area of the prepared Ag@AgCl/CA were characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and BET. The photogenerated electron transport efficiency and visible light absorption were analyzed by photocurrent and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), respectively. The surface electrical properties and degradation stability were evaluated by zeta potential measurement and cyclic catalytic degradation experiments, and the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed in detail based on the ESR test and trapping experiment. The results showed that the cluster of Ag@AgCl nanoparticles were distributed on the CA crosslinking structure. The prepared Ag@ AgCl/CA photocatalytic material has a high Zeta potential, stable photocurrent, and small photogenerated electron transfer resistance. It has good adsorption and photocatalytic degradation stability for OTC. The material has a relatively strong absorption in the visible light range. Temperature and initial pH had significant effects on the degradation of OTC by photocatalytic materials. The photocatalytic degradation rate was the highest at 40°C and pH6, and the photocatalytic degradation process conformed to the quasi-first-order reaction kinetics. Holes (h⁺) and superoxide radicals (·O₂－) were the main active species for the degradation of OTC.

The improved antibacterial efficiency of a zinc phthalocyanine when embedded on silver nanoparticle modified silica nanofibers

This work reports on the fabrication and modification of electrospun polymer free silica nanofibers (SiO₂ NFs) with the aim of creating heterogeneous antibacterial catalysts. The optical and photophysical properties of the obtained NFs i.e. bare SiO₂, Ag-SiO₂, Pc-SiO₂ and Pc@Ag-SiO₂ NFs (Pc = phthalocyanine) were compared and reported. The singlet oxygen quantum yields of the Pc-SiO₂ and Pc@Ag-SiO₂ NFs were also quantified and found to be 0.08 and 0.12, respectively, in water. All the modified SiO₂ NFs were found to possess photoactivity against S. aureus with the most effective being the Pc@Ag-SiO₂ NFs due to the synergy between the Pc and Ag nanoparticles. The bare SiO₂ NFs do not exhibit any antibacterial activity while the Ag-SiO₂ and Pc@Ag-SiO₂ NFs were found to also exhibit dark toxicity. The generated photocatalysts are attractive because they are active against bacteria and they are easily retrievable post-application. The nanocatalysts reported herein are therefore feasible candidates for real-life antibacterial applications.

Highly efficient degradation of thidiazuron with Ag/AgCl- activated carbon composites under LED light irradiation

Thidiazuron (TDZ; 1-phenyl-3-(1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-yl)urea) is one of the most widely used defoliant and easy to dissolve in surface water. Risk associated with the pesticide is not clearly defined, so it is important to remove/degrade TDZ with an efficient and environment friendly technology. Here, we investigated the use of Ag/AgCl-activated carbon (Ag/AgCl-AC) composites in photocatalytic degradation of TDZ under LED light. By the synergic effect of Ag/AgCl and AC, the optimum Ag/carbon weight ratio of 2:1 exhibited superior visible-light photocatalytic activity, the highest removal efficiency was close to 91% in pH 7 matrix. Different types of Ag/AgCl-AC composites were tested, all showed much faster photodegradation kinetics than bare Ag/AgCl in 210min. The degradation products as identified by HPLC-MS revealed that the hydroxylation by hydroxyl radicals and that of oxidation by superoxide radicals as well as holes were the two main pathways for TDZ degradation. Results revealed that the adsorption concentrated TDZ molecules and the photocatalytically generated radicals rapidly degradated TDZ, the two contributions functioned together for removal of the pollutant from water.
