Light Controlled 3D Crystal Morphology for Droplet Evaporative Crystallization on Photosensitive Hydrophobic Substrate

Controlling crystal morphology is crucial in analytical chemistry and smart materials synthesis, etc. However, flexible manipulation of 3D crystal morphology still remains challenging. Herein, we present a novel and facile light strategy for droplet evaporative crystallization to manipulate macroscopic crystal morphology on photosensitive hydrophobic substrate possessing photothermal conversion property. We demonstrate that the spherical coronal shell and alms bowl-like crystal skeletons can be achieved on smooth photosensitive hydrophobic substrate, depending on the salt concentration. Rough photosensitive hydrophobic substrate further creates a bubble-assisted light strategy, by which a cylindrical shell-like crystal skeleton with a directionally controllable cavity is achieved. Amazingly, the proper additive endows droplet evaporative crystallization to form a closed crystal skeleton with the solution wrapped inside. The present study provides new ideas for designing a novel optical droplet microfluidic platform for controlling crystal morphology.

New insights into unusual droplets: from mediating the wettability to manipulating the locomotion modes

The ability to manipulate droplets can be utilized to develop various smart sensors or actuators, endowing them with fascinating applications for drug delivery, detection of target analytes, environmental monitoring, intelligent control, and so on. However, the stimuli-responsive superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic materials for normal water droplets cannot satisfy the requirements from some certain circumstances, i.e., liquid lenses and biosensors (detection of various additives in water/blood droplets). Stimuli-responsive wetting/dewetting behaviors of exceptional droplets are open issues and are attracting much attention from across the world. In this perspective article, the unconventional droplets are divided into three categories: ionic or surfactant additives in water droplets, oil droplets, and bubble droplets. We first introduce several classical wettability models of droplets and some methods to achieve wettability transition. The unusual droplet motion is also introduced in detail. There are four main types of locomotion modes, which are vertical rebound motion, lateral motion, self-propulsion motion, and anisotropic wettability controlled sliding behavior. The driving mechanism for the droplet motion is briefly introduced as well. Some approaches to achieve this manipulation goal, such as light irradiation, electronic, magnetic, acid-base, thermal, and mechanical ways will be taken into consideration. Finally, the current researches on unconventional droplets extending to polymer droplets and liquid metal droplets on the surface of special wettability materials are summarized and the prospect of unconventional droplet research directions in the field of on-demand transport application will be proposed.

Facile Fabrication of a Superhydrophobic Surface with Robust Micro-/Nanoscale Hierarchical Structures on Titanium Substrate

A superhydrophobic surface with robust structures on a metallic surface could improve its application in various harsh conditions. Herein, we developed a new strategy to fabricate robust micro-/nanoscale hierarchical structures with electrical discharge machining and electrochemical etching on a titanium substrate. After modification by fluorinated silane, the static water contact angle and slide angle of the surface could reach 162 ± 2° and 4 ± 1°, respectively. The superhydrophobic surfaces showed good corrosion resistance and mechanical stability after scratching with sandpapers. In addition, the superhydrophobic surfaces had good self-cleaning performance even in an acidic environment as well as the potential to be used as guiding tracks in droplet microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip systems. These results are expected to be helpful in designing the surface of liquid float gyroscope parts.

Light-driven motion of water droplets with directional control on nanostructured surfaces

Discrete droplet transport has drawn much interest in a broad range of applications. Controlling the motion direction in droplet transport, however, is a long-lasting challenge. In this work, a simple yet efficient approach is demonstrated to realize the motion of droplets with directional control on nanostructured surfaces with predefined channels. Light is used as the external stimulus to induce the uneven thermal expansion of the substrate, which leads to the tilting of nanostructured channels so that the droplet is driven to move along the channel. Due to the easy manipulation of light, including both the light position and power density, this study demonstrates the controllable entrance of static water droplets into targeted channels and the simultaneous control of the motion of multiple droplets in multi-channel systems, using just one light source. Besides static droplets, this approach can also be applied for the directional control of moving droplets in multi-channel systems. As a proof-of-concept, such an approach has been utilized for efficient multiplexed reactions for chemical sensing or microreactor applications. This work offers an alternative approach for the manipulation of droplet movement in applications that involve the control of droplet motion.

Single-Droplet Multiplex Bioassay on a Robust and Stretchable Extreme Wetting Substrate through Vacuum-Based Droplet Manipulation

Herein, a droplet manipulation system with a superamphiphobic (SPO)-superamphiphilic (SPI) patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate is developed for a multiplex bioassay from single-droplet samples. The SPO substrate is fabricated by sequential spraying of adhesive and fluorinated silica nanoparticles onto a PDMS substrate. It is subsequently subjected to oxygen plasma with a patterned mask to form SPI patterns. The SPO layer exhibits extreme liquid repellency with a high contact angle (>150°) toward low surface tension and viscous biofluidic droplets (e.g., ethylene glycol, blood, dimethyl sulfoxide, and alginate hydrogel). In contrast, the SPI exhibits liquid adhesion with a near zero contact angle. Using the droplet manipulation system, various liquid droplets can be precisely manipulated and dispensed onto the predefined SPI patterns on the SPO PDMS substrate. This system enables a multiplex colorimetric bioassay, capable of detecting multiple analytes, including glucose, uric acid, and lactate, from a single sample droplet. In addition, the detection of glucose concentrations in a plasma droplet of diabetic and healthy mice are performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system for efficient clinical diagnostic applications.

Ultrafast single-droplet bouncing actuator with electrostatic force on superhydrophobic electrodes

The ultrafast bouncing motion of a liquid droplet has been investigated for droplet manipulation with a single droplet actuator using an electrostatic force for the first time.
