Abstract
Azulene, known for its unique electronic properties and structural asymmetry, serves as a promising building block for the design of novel non-benzenoid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Herein, we present the synthesis, characterization, and physical properties of three diazulene-fused heptacyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 8,17-dioctyldiazuleno[2,1-a:2',1'-h]anthracene (trans configuration), 16,18-dioctyldiazuleno[2,1-a:1',2'-j]anthracene (cis configuration) and 3,18-dioctyldiazuleno[2,1-a:1',2'-i]phenanthrene (zigzag configuration). Three compounds are configurational isomers with different fusing patterns of aromatic rings. All three isomers exhibit pronounced aromaticity, as revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. They exhibit characteristics of both azulene and benzenoid PAHs and are much more stable than their all-benzene analogues. The optical and electrochemical properties of these three isomers were investigated through UV-vis absorption spectra and cyclic voltammetry, revealing distinct behaviors influenced by their molecular configurations. Furthermore, the isomer in trans configuration exhibits promising semiconducting properties with a hole mobility of up to 0.22 cm2 V-1 s-1, indicating its potential in organic electronics applications.

Fused Azulenyl Squaraine Derivatives Improve Phototheranostics in the Second Near-Infrared Window by Concentrating Excited State Energy on Non-Radiative Decay Pathways. Abstract
The second near-infrared (NIR-II) theranostics offer new opportunities for precise disease phototheranostic due to the enhanced tissue penetration and higher maximum permissible exposure of NIR-II light. However, traditional regimens lacking effective NIR-II absorption and uncontrollable excited-state energy decay pathways often result in insufficient theranostic outcomes. Herein a phototheranostic nano-agent (PS-1 NPs) based on azulenyl squaraine derivatives with a strong NIR-II absorption band centered at 1092 nm is reported, allowing almost all absorbed excitation energy to dissipate through non-radiative decay pathways, leading to high photothermal conversion efficiency (90.98 %) and strong photoacoustic response. Both in vitro and in vivo photoacoustic/photothermal therapy results demonstrate enhanced deep tissue cancer theranostic performance of PS-1 NPs. Even in the 5 mm deep-seated tumor model, PS-1 NPs demonstrated a satisfactory anti-tumor effect in photoacoustic imaging-guided photothermal therapy. Moreover, for the human extracted tooth root canal infection model, the synergistic outcomes of the photothermal effect of PS-1 NPs and 0.5 % NaClO solution resulted in therapeutic efficacy comparable to the clinical gold standard irrigation agent 5.25 % NaClO, opening up possibilities for the expansion of NIR-II theranostic agents in oral medicine.

Abstract
Pyrones and their aromatic ring-fused derivatives have gained significant attention due to their diverse biological activities and potential as foundational frameworks for advanced materials. In this paper, we describe a proficient approach for the preparation of azuleno[1,2-c]pyran-1-ones, which are difficult to produce by using conventional methods. The synthesis was achieved through Bro̷nsted acid-mediated cyclization of 2-azulenylalkynes. The structural and optical properties of azuleno[1,2-c]pyran-1-ones were characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis, NMR, UV/vis, and fluorescence spectroscopies. Under acidic conditions, these compounds displayed notable spectral alterations and emission, distinct from their spectra in neutral medium. These results suggest that azuleno[1,2-c]pyran-1-ones hold great potential for applications in organic electronic materials and fluorescent pH sensors.

Abstract
Dibenzofurans featuring a 2,2'-biazulene framework were prepared in good yields by Brønsted acid-promoted annulation of 2,3-di(1-azulenyl)benzofurans in 100% H3PO4. NMR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopies were used to investigate the structural and optical properties of the products prepared. Remarkably, the annulated products exhibited fluorescence, with the longest wavelength of azulene derivatives reported to date, which extended into the near-infrared region under acidic conditions.

Abstract
Three S-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) bearing cyclopenta[b]thiopyran moieties have been designed and successfully synthesized. With the conjugation extension, the absorption onset of the longest PAH reaches 1110 nm. All the three S-fused PAHs exhibit significant halochromic properties in both solution and solid states. Upon protonation, the proton is incorporated on the cyclopentadiene ring while the positive charge is localized on the thiopyrylium ring. Moreover, no significant difference can be found for the two shorter PAHs upon the protonation by different organic acids, such as trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH), while the longest PAH can be only mono-protonated by TFA but di-protonated by stronger TfOH. Furthermore, after protonation, the non-emissive S-fused PAHs exhibit strong fluorescence and can be regenerated by simply neutralization with triethylamine. The enhanced emission of mono-protonated products stem from S2 →S0 transitions, which disobey the Kasha's rule.

Abstract
In this paper, azulenes substituted with thiophen– or furan–vinyl–pyridine are reported as heavy metal ligands in systems based on chemically modified electrodes. We undertook a computational study of their structures using density functional theory (DFT). Based on these computations, we obtained properties and key molecular descriptors related to chemical reactivity and electrochemical behavior. We investigated the correlation between some quantum parameters associated with the chemical reactivity and the complexing properties of the modified electrodes based on these ligands. The best correlations for the parameters were retained. We showed that the linear correlation between DFT-computed HOMO/LUMO energies and experimental redox potentials is very good.

Abstract
A series of novel 2,6-functionalized azulene molecules Azu1-3 with varied fluorene substituents at the 1- and 3-positions of azulene as well as at the 5'-position of 2-thiophene group were synthesized. Their electronic absorption and emission spectra at neutral and protonated states were examined. It was found that after functionalization with fluorenyl groups, Azu1-3 exhibited absorption maxima at 445, 451 to 468 nm, respectively. In contrast, their corresponding protonated species showed much redshifted absorption maxima at 560, 582 to 643 nm, respectively, mainly due to the extension of conjugation length and the large dipole moment along the C2v axis of 2,6-substituted azulene molecules. Azu1-3 are non-fluorescent in their neutral forms, but became emissive in their protonated states. Analysis of absorption and emission spectra shows that substitution of the 1- or 3-position of azulene led to decrease in response to trifluoroacetic acid.

Abstract
The azulene molecule features a unique combination of optical, luminescence, and stimuli-responsive properties. This makes the azulene motif a promising functional group to be introduced in photoswitches. Recent challenges in the field of photochromic compounds require the development of new approaches to molecules that are switched by visible light (400-760 nm), are proton responsive and have advanced luminescent properties. Merging azulene with photoswitches opens prospects for fulfilling these requirements. Herein, we highlight recent results on the application of this hydrocarbon motif in various photochromic systems, such as stilbenes, diarylethenes, and azobenzenes.

Abstract
Guaiazulene is an alkyl-substituted azulene available from natural sources and is a much lower cost starting material for the synthesis of azulene derivatives than azulene itself. Here we report an approach for the selective functionalisation of guaiazulene which takes advantage of the acidity of the protons on the guaiazulene C4 methyl group. The aldehyde produced by this approach constitutes a building block for the construction of azulenes substituted on the seven-membered ring. Derivatives of this aldehyde synthesised by alkenylation, reduction and condensation are reported, and the halochromic properties of a subset of these derivatives have been studied.

Abstract
Azulene is a hydrocarbon isomer of naphthalene known for its unusual colour and fluorescence properties. Through the harnessing of these properties, the literature has been enriched with a series of chemical sensors and dosimeters with distinct colorimetric and fluorescence responses. This review focuses specifically on the latter of these phenomena. The review is subdivided into two sections. Section one discusses turn-on fluorescent sensors employing azulene, for which the literature is dominated by examples of the unusual phenomenon of azulene protonation-dependent fluorescence. Section two focuses on fluorescent azulenes that have been used in the context of biological sensing and imaging. To aid the reader, the azulene skeleton is highlighted in blue in each compound.

Abstract
The functionalization of azulenes via reaction with cationic η5-iron carbonyl diene complexes under mild reaction conditions is demonstrated. A range of azulenes, including derivatives of naturally occurring guaiazulene, were investigated in reactions with three electrophilic iron complexes of varying electronic properties, affording the desired coupling products in 43-98% yield. The products were examined with UV-vis/fluorescence spectroscopy and showed interesting halochromic properties. Decomplexation and further derivatization of the products provide access to several different classes of 1-substituted azulenes, including a conjugated ketone and a fused tetracycle.

Abstract
The preparation of phthalimides cross-conjugated with an azulene ring was established by a one-pot Diels-Alder reaction of the corresponding 2-aminofuran derivatives with several maleimides, without the isolation of the intermediately formed [4 + 2] cycloadducts. The structure, optical and electrochemical properties of the novel phthalimide derivatives were clarified by single-crystal X-ray analysis, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectra, spectroelectrochemistry and voltammetry experiments, and theoretical calculations. These results indicated that the substituents on the azulene ring greatly affect the optical and electrochemical properties of the molecules.

Abstract
Azulene, the smallest neutral nonalternant aromatic hydrocarbon, serves not only as a prototype for fundamental studies but also as a versatile building block for functional materials because of its unique opto(electronic) properties. Here, we report the on-surface synthesis and characterization of the homopolymer of azulene connected exclusively at the 2,6-positions using 2,6-diiodoazulene as the monomer precursor. As an intermediate to the formation of polyazulene, a gold-(2,6-azulenylene) chain is observed.

Abstract
Azulene as a potential building block for constructing organic/polymeric conjugated materials has attracted more and more attention due to its unique chemical structure and physicochemical properties. However, up to now, most reported azulene-based conjugated polymers have been dominated by the connection of the five-membered ring of azulene through 1,3-positions. Herein, by incorporating 1,3-free-2,6-connected azulene units into the polymeric backbone, two azulene-based all-carbon conjugated polymers P1 and P2 with different connection ways of 2,6-azulene and 2,7-fluorene units were presented. Protonation of these two polymers with trifluoroacetic acid leads to rapid and reversible color changes in both the solution and thin-film state. Moreover, these 1,3-free-2,6-connected azulene-based conjugated polymers exhibit high electrical conductivity (2.94 and 0.32 S/cm for P1 and P2, respectively) in thin film when doped by trifluoromethanesulfonic acid.

Abstract
The synthesis of different π-spacered thiophene comonomers via Suzuki cross-coupling in good synthetic yields was accomplished. Potentiodynamic electropolymerization of these precursors on ITO electrode by constant potential electrolysis results in the deposition of thin films of polymers between 0.05 and 0.2 μM. Interestingly, the as synthesized π-conjugated polymers exhibit electrochromic behaviour upon electrochemical oxidation. On the application side, the synthesized electropolymers showed catalytic activity better than glassy carbon towards electrochemical reduction of nitrobenzene. The synthesis of different π-spacered thiophene comonomers via Suzuki cross-coupling in good synthetic yields was accomplished.![]()

Abstract
Conversion of multicolor luminescence is one of desirable goals in study and development of next-generation molecular emitters, whereas involving visible light into the control of the above-mentioned ability has been poorly addressed due to the need of a relatively complicate molecular design. In this work, we present a novel dyad with a linkage of 4-piperazinyl-1,8-naphthalimide and cyanostyryl-modified azulene moiety, upon which the luminescence signal can be orthogonally controlled by protonation and green light irradiation. The superior features of the protonation induced excited state energy alteration, followed by green light driven photoisomerization led to a progressive luminescent color conversion among blue, yellow and green at the single molecular level. This strategy may bring in novel insights for preparing advanced function-integrated optoelectronic materials.

Abstract
The preparation of two new azulene-based imine ligands N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-6-tBu-1-azulenylmethaneimine, 3, and N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-6-tBu-3-(2,6-diisopropylphenyliminomethyl)-1-azulenylmethaneimine, 4, is described. These imine ligands display stimuli responsive emissive behavior and their fluorescence can be switched on and off by protonation and neutralization with trifluoroacetic acid and trimethylamine, respectively. The cyclometalation of the monoimine ligand by platinum gave the cyclometalated complex [PtMe(SMe2)(3')], 5, (where the prime denotes the cyclometalated ligand 3). The reaction of 5 with TlPF6 yields the trinuclear bent Pt2Tl complex {[PtMe(SMe2)(3')]2(μ-Tl)}PF6, 6, via Pt-Tl dative bonds. The compounds 3-6 were characterized using NMR spectroscopy and the solid-state structures of 5 and 6 were further determined by X-ray crystallography. The electronic absorption spectra of the species 3-H+, 4-H+, 5 and 6 were obtained and compared with those observed for the parent species 3 and 4. DFT and TD-DFT calculations are used to elucidate the origin of the electronic transitions in monoimine ligand 3 and its protonated form 3-H+.

Abstract
A controllable sensing ability strongly connects to complex and precise events in diagnosis and treatment. However, imposing visible light into the molecular-scale mediation of sensing processes is restricted by the lack of structural relevance. To address this critical challenge, we present the rational design, synthesis, and in vitro studies of a novel cyanostyryl-modified azulene system for green-light-mediated fast switchable acidic sensing. The advantageous features of the design include a highly efficient green-light-driven Z/E-isomerization (a quantum yield up to 61.3%) for fast erasing chromatic and luminescent expressions and a superior compatibility with control of ratiometric protonation. Significantly, these merits of the design enable the development of a microfluidic system to perform a green-light-mediated reusable sensing function toward a gastric acid analyte in a miniaturized platform. The results may provide new insights for building future integrated green materials.

Abstract
Azulene-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were synthesized from commercially available azulene in four steps. The resulting azulene conjugates exhibited significantly narrow HOMO-LUMO bandgaps with high air stability, confirmed by photophysical study. Introduction of azulene also enabled the unique reversible stimuli-responsiveness even with the weak acid and base, which can potentially control the degree of conjugation and optoelectronic properties by simple acid-base and redox processes.

Abstract
With the scientific community becoming increasingly aware of the need for greener products and methodologies, the optimization of synthetic design is of greater importance. Building on experimental data collected from a synthesized guaiazulene derivative, a series of analogous structures were investigated with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods in an effort to identify a compound with desirable photophysical properties. This in silico analysis may eliminate the need to synthesize numerous materials that, when investigated, do not possess viable characteristics. The synthesis of several computationally investigated structures revealed discrepancies in the calculation results. Further refined computational study of the molecules yielded results closer to those observed experimentally and helps set the stage for computationally guided design of organic photonic materials. Three novel derivatives were synthesized from guaiazulene, a naturally occurring chromophore, exhibiting distinct halochromic behaviour, which may have potential in a switchable optoelectronic system or combined with a photoacid generator for data storage. The protonated forms were readily excitable via two-photon absorption.

Abstract
Azulenesulfonium salts may be readily prepared from the corresponding azulenes by an SE Ar reaction. These azulene sulfonium salts are bench-stable species that may be employed as pseudohalides for cross-coupling. Specifically, their application in Suzuki-Miyaura reactions has been demonstrated with a diverse selection of coupling partners. These azulenesulfonium salts possess significant advantages in comparison with the corresponding azulenyl halides, which are known to be unstable and difficult to prepare in pure form.
