Mechanism of aggregate formation in simplified industrial silica styrene-butadiene nanocomposites: effect of chain mass and grafting on rheology and structure

Microscopic Origins of the Nonlinear Behavior of Particle-Filled Rubber Probed with Dynamic Strain XPCS

The underlying microscopic response of filler networks in reinforced rubber to dynamic strain is not well understood due to the experimental difficulty of directly measuring filler network behavior in samples undergoing dynamic strain. This difficulty can be overcome with in situ X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements. The contrast between the silica filler and the rubber matrix for X-ray scattering allows us to isolate the filler network behavior from the overall response of the rubber. This in situ XPCS technique probes the microscopic breakdown and reforming of the filler network structure, which are responsible for the nonlinear dependence of modulus on strain, known in the rubber science community as the Payne effect. These microscopic changes in the filler network structure have consequences for the macroscopic material performance, especially for the fuel efficiency of tire tread compounds. Here, we elucidate the behavior with in situ dynamic strain XPCS experiments on industrially relevant, vulcanized rubbers filled (13 vol %) with novel air-milled silica of ultrahigh-surface area (UHSA) (250 m²/g). The addition of a silane coupling agent to rubber containing this silica causes an unexpected and counterintuitive increase in the Payne effect and decrease in energy dissipation. For this rubber, we observe a nearly two-fold enhancement of the storage modulus and virtually equivalent loss tangent compared to a rubber containing a coupling agent and conventional silica. Interpretation of our in situ XPCS results simultaneously with interpretation of traditional dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) strain sweep experiments reveals that the debonding or yielding of bridged bound rubber layers is key to understanding the behavior of rubber formulations containing the silane coupling agent and high-surface area silica. These results demonstrate that the combination of XPCS and DMA is a powerful method for unraveling the microscale filler response to strain which dictates the dynamic mechanical properties of reinforced soft matter composites. With this combination of techniques, we have elucidated the great promise of UHSA silica when used in concert with a silane coupling agent in filled rubber. Such composites simultaneously exhibit large moduli and low hysteresis under dynamic strain.

Anisotropic and heterogeneous dynamics in stretched elastomer nanocomposites

We use X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to investigate the dynamics of a stretched elastomer by means of probe particles. The particles dispersed in the elastomer were carbon black or silica aggregates classically used for elastomer reinforcement but their volume fraction is very low (φ < 10-2). We show that their dynamics is slower in the direction of the tensile strain than in the perpendicular one. For hydroxylated silica which is poorly wetted by the elastomer, there is no anisotropy. Two-time correlation functions confirm anisotropic dynamics and suggest dynamical heterogeneity already expected from the q-1 behavior of the relaxation times. The height χ* of the peak of the dynamical susceptibility, determined by the normalized variance of the instantaneous correlation function, is larger in the direction parallel to the strain than in the perpendicular one. It also appears that its q dependence changes with the morphology of the probe particle. Therefore, the heterogeneous dynamic probed by the particles is not related only to that of the strained elastomer matrix. In fact, it results from modification of the dynamics of the polymer chains near the surface of the particles and within the aggregate porosity (bound polymer). It is concluded that XPCS is a powerful method for investigating the dynamics, at a given strain, of the bound polymer-particle units which are responsible, at large volume fractions, for the reinforcement.

Isostructural softening of the filler network in SBR/silica nanocomposites

A new formulation of the widely used nanocomposites based on SBR (ca. 250 kg mol-1) and fractal silica fillers is proposed by substituting the usual covering and coupling agents with short chains (4 kg mol-1) of polypropylene glycol (PPG). We study in a systematic way the structural evolution and the changes in the linear and non-linear mechanical properties of two series of samples varying: (i) the silica volume fraction (Φsi = 0, 5, 10 and 15 vol%) in PPG-free samples and (ii) the amount of PPG for a given silica content Φsi = 15 vol%. While the first series is used as a reference, showing expected trends (e.g. the enhancement of the plateau modulus), the second series reveals in contrast, a surprising PPG insensitivity, both in terms of the filler structure (investigated by means of SAXS, SEM and TEM) and properties "at rest" (linear rheology). However, increasing the strain amplitude (both in shear and tensile tests) discloses the great effect of the oligomers, opening possibly the way to a fruitful decorrelation between the low and high deformation performances of tires. Although this study is limited to the investigation of uncrosslinked materials, it will be extended to more operative industrial formulations in due course.

Nanoparticle self-assembly: from interactions in suspension to polymer nanocomposites

Recent experimental results using in particular small-angle scattering to characterize the self-assembly of mainly hard spherical nanoparticles into higher ordered structures ranging from fractal aggregates to ordered assemblies are reviewed. The crucial control of interparticle interactions is discussed, from chemical surface-modification, or the action of additives like depletion agents, to the generation of directional patches and the use of external fields. It is shown how the properties of interparticle interactions have been used to allow inducing and possibly controlling aggregation, opening the road to the generation of colloidal molecules or potentially metamaterials. In the last part, studies of the microstructure of polymer nanocomposites as an application of volume-spanning and stress-carrying aggregates are discussed.

Introduction to soft matter and neutron scattering

As an opening lecture to the French-Swedish neutron scattering school held in Uppsala (6th to 9th of December 2016), the basic concepts of both soft matter science and neutron scattering are introduced. Typical soft matter systems like self-assembled surfactants in water, microemulsions, (co-)polymers, and colloids are presented. It will be shown that widely different systems have a common underlying physics dominated by the thermal energy, with astonishing consequences on their statistical thermodynamics, and ultimately rheological properties – namely softness. In the second part, the fundamentals of neutron scattering techniques and in particular small-angle neutron scattering as a powerful method to characterize soft matter systems will be outlined.

Structure, interfacial film properties, and thermal fluctuations of microemulsions as seen by scattering experiments

The physics of microemulsions and in particular Dominique Langevin's contributions to the understanding of microemulsion structure and bending properties using scattering techniques are reviewed. Among the many methods used by her and her co-workers, we particularly emphasize optical techniques and small angle neutron scattering (SANS), but also neutron spin echo spectroscopy (NSE). The review is then extended to more recent studies of properties of microemulsions close to surfaces, using reflectometry and grazing-incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS).

Network dynamics in nanofilled polymers

It is well accepted that adding nanoparticles (NPs) to polymer melts can result in significant property improvements. Here we focus on the causes of mechanical reinforcement and present rheological measurements on favourably interacting mixtures of spherical silica NPs and poly(2-vinylpyridine), complemented by several dynamic and structural probes. While the system dynamics are polymer-like with increased friction for low silica loadings, they turn network-like when the mean face-to-face separation between NPs becomes smaller than the entanglement tube diameter. Gel-like dynamics with a Williams-Landel-Ferry temperature dependence then result. This dependence turns particle dominated, that is, Arrhenius-like, when the silica loading increases to ∼31 vol%, namely, when the average nearest distance between NP faces becomes comparable to the polymer's Kuhn length. Our results demonstrate that the flow properties of nanocomposites are complex and can be tuned via changes in filler loading, that is, the character of polymer bridges which 'tie' NPs together into a network.

Revealing nanocomposite filler structures by swelling and small-angle X-ray scattering

Polymer nanocomposites are used widely, mainly for the industrial application of car tyres. The rheological behavior of such nanocomposites depends in a crucial way on the dispersion of the hard filler particles – typically silica nanoparticles embedded in a soft polymer matrix. It is thus important to assess the filler structure, which may be quite difficult for aggregates of nanoparticles of high polydispersity, and with strong interactions at high loading. This has been achieved recently using a coupled TEM/SAXS structural model describing the filler microstructure of simplified industrial nanocomposites with grafted or ungrafted silica of high structural disorder. Here, we present an original method capable of reducing inter-aggregate interactions by swelling of nanocomposites, diluting the filler to low-volume fractions. Note that this is impossible to reach by solid mixing due to the large differences in viscoelasticity between the composite and the pure polymer. By combining matrix crosslinking, swelling in a good monomer solvent, and post-polymerization of these monomers, it is shown that it is possible to separate the filler into small aggregates. The latter have then been characterized by electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering, confirming the conclusions of the above mentioned TEM-SAXS structural model applied directly to the highly loaded cases.

A high-temperature dielectric process as a probe of large-scale silica filler structure in simplified industrial nanocomposites

The existence of two independent filler-dependent high-temperature Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars (MWS) dielectric processes is demonstrated and characterized in detail in silica-filled styrene-butadiene (SB) industrial nanocomposites of simplified composition using Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS). The uncrosslinked samples are made with 140 kg mol(-1) SB-chains, half of which carry a single graftable end-function (50% D3), and Zeosil 1165 MP silica incorporated by solid-phase mixing. While one high-temperature process is known to exist in other systems, the dielectric properties of a new silica-related process - strength, relaxation time, and activation energy - have been evidenced and described as a function of silica volume fraction and temperature. In particular, it is shown that its strength follows a percolation behavior as observed with the ionic conductivity and rheology. Moreover, activation energies show the role of polymer layers separating aggregates even when they are percolated. Apart from simultaneous characterization over a broad frequency range up to local polymer and silanol dynamics, it is believed that such high-temperature BDS-measurements can thus be used to detect reorganizations in structurally-complex silica nanocomposites. Moreover, they should contribute to a better identification of dynamical processes via the described sensitivity to structure in such systems.
