Abstract
Flagella and cilia are slender structures that serve important functionalities in the microscopic world through their locomotion induced by fluid and structure interaction. With recent developments in microscopy, fabrication, biology, and modeling capability, robots inspired by the locomotion of these organelles in low Reynolds number flow have been manufactured and tested on the micro-and macro-scale, ranging from medicalin vivomicrobots, microfluidics to macro prototypes. We present a collection of modeling theories, control principles, and fabrication methods for flagellated and ciliary robots.

Abstract
Micromotors have spread widely in order to meet the needs of new applications, including cell operation, drug delivery, biosensing, precise surgery and environmental decontamination, due to their small size, low energy consumption and large propelling power, especially the newly designed multifunctional micromotors that combine many extra shape features in one device. Features such as rod-like receptors, dendritic biosensors and ball-like catalyzing enzymes are added to the outer surface of the tubular micromotor during fabrication to perform their special mission. However, the structural optimization of motion performance is still unclear. The main factor restricting the motion performance of the micromotors is the drag forces. The complex geometry of a micromotor makes its dynamic behavior more complicated in a fluid environment. This study aimed to design the optimum structure of tubular micromotors with minimum drag forces and obtain the magnitude of drag forces considering both the internal and external fluids of the micromotors. By using the computational fluid dynamics software Fluent 18.0 (ANSYS), the drag force and the drag coefficient of different conical micromotors were calculated. Moreover, the influence of the Reynolds numbers Re, the semi-cone angle δ and the ratios ξ and η on the drag coefficient was analyzed. The results show the drag force monotonically increased with Reynolds numbers Re and the ratio η. The extreme point of the drag curve is reached when the semi-cone angle δ is 8° and the ratio ξ is 3.846. This work provides theoretical support and guidance for optimizing the design and development of conical micromotors.

Abstract
A general method is presented for computing the motions of hydrodynamically interacting particles in various kinds of host fluids for arbitrary Reynolds numbers. The method follows the standard procedure for performing direct numerical simulations (DNS) of particulate systems, where the Navier-Stokes equation must be solved consistently with the motion of the rigid particles, which defines the temporal boundary conditions to be satisfied by the Navier-Stokes equation. The smoothed profile (SP) method provides an efficient numerical scheme for coupling the continuum fluid mechanics with the dispersed moving particles, which are allowed to have arbitrary shapes. In this method, the sharp boundaries between solid particles and the host fluid are replaced with a smeared out thin shell (interfacial) region, which can be accurately resolved on a fixed Cartesian grid utilizing a SP function with a finite thickness. The accuracy of the SP method is illustrated by comparison with known exact results. In the present paper, the high degree of versatility of the SP method is demonstrated by considering several types of active and passive particle suspensions.

Abstract
A gold-capped Janus particle suspended in a near-critical binary liquid mixture can self-propel under illumination. We have immobilized such a particle in a narrow channel and carried out a combined experimental and theoretical study of the non-equilibrium dynamics of a binary solvent around it - lasting from the very moment of switching illumination on until the steady state is reached. In the theoretical study we use both a purely diffusive and a hydrodynamic model, which we solve numerically. Our results demonstrate a remarkable complexity of the time evolution of the concentration field around the colloid. This evolution is governed by the combined effects of the temperature gradient and the wettability, and crucially depends on whether the colloid is free to move or is trapped. For the trapped colloid, all approaches indicate that the early time dynamics is purely diffusive and characterized by composition layers travelling with constant speed from the surface of the colloid into the bulk of the solvent. Subsequently, hydrodynamic effects set in. Anomalously large nonequilibrium fluctuations, which result from the temperature gradient and the vicinity of the critical point of the binary liquid mixture, give rise to strong concentration fluctuations in the solvent and to permanently changing coarsening patterns not observed for a mobile particle. The early time dynamics around initially still Janus colloids produces a force which is able to set the Janus colloid into motion. The propulsion due to this transient dynamics is in the direction opposite to that observed after the steady state is attained.

Abstract
Using a fluid particle dynamics method we numerically investigate the motion of a spherical Janus particle suspended in a binary liquid mixture, which emerges under heating of one-half of a colloid surface. The method treats simultaneously the flow of the solvent and the motion of the particle, hence, the velocity of the particle can be computed directly. Our approach accounts for a phenomenon of critical adsorption, therefore, a particle that is adsorptionwise nonneutral is always completely covered by an adsorption layer (droplet). In order to establish the mechanism of self-propulsion, we study systematically various combinations of adsorption preference on both hemispheres of the Janus colloid as function of the heating power for symmetric and nonsymmetric binary solvents and for various particle sizes in three spatial dimensions. Only for a particle for which the heated hemisphere is neutral whereas the other hemisphere prefers one of the two components of the mixture does the reversal of the direction of motion occur. The particle self-propels much faster in nonsymmetric binary solvents. Self-propulsion originates from a gradient of mechanical stress, in a way similar to the Marangoni effect. This stress is not localized at the edge but distributed within the whole droplet. We compare our findings with the experimental observations and other theoretical results.

Abstract
In past decades, considerable advances have been achieved in micro and nanomotors. Particular attention has been given to self-propelled catalytic micromotors, which have been widely used in cell separation, drug delivery, microsurgery, lithography and environmental remediation. Fast moving, long life micromotors appear regularly, however it seems there are no solutions yet that thoroughly clarify the hydrodynamic behavior of catalytic micromotors moving in fluid. Dynamic behavior of this kind of micromotors is mainly determined by the driving force and drag force acting on the micromotors. Based on the hydromechanics theory, a hydrodynamic model is established to predict the drag force for a conical micromotor immersed in the flow field. By using the computational fluid dynamics software Fluent 18.0 (ANSYS), the drag force and the drag coefficient of different conical micromotors are calculated. A mathematical model was proposed to describe the relationship among Reynolds numbers Re, the ratio λ, the semi-cone angle δ and the drag coefficient Cd of the micromotors. This work provides theoretical support and reference for optimizing the design and development of conical micromotors.

Abstract
Self-organization of charged soft matter is of crucial importance in biology. However, it is an extremely complex phenomenon due to dynamical couplings between the hydrodynamic flow, ions, and charges of soft matter. For colloidal suspensions, the coupling between the former two has already been studied by numerical simulations, with the colloid surface charge being fixed. However, the self-organization of colloids and/or the application of an external electric field make the electrostatic environment of each colloid inhomogeneous in both space and time. Thus, this leads to inhomogenisation of the surface charge of each colloid under ionisation equilibrium conditions. This effect is known as "charge regulation" and is of great importance in various electrostatic and electrokinetic phenomena not only in colloid suspensions but also in solutions of biomolecules. However, there has so far been no success in taking the charge regulation effect into account in numerical simulations of colloidal electrokinetics. Here, we extend the fluid particle dynamics (FPD) method to incorporate the charge regulation effect. We present a theoretical formulation of the method and its application to two types of problems, where charge regulation plays an important role: (i) cluster formation of colloid particles and (ii) a single colloid particle under an external field. By these examples, we show not only the importance of considering charge-regulation effects in the self-organization of charged systems but also the applicability of our simulation method to more complex problems of charged soft matter systems.

Abstract
Microorganisms are able to overcome the thermal randomness of their surroundings by harvesting energy to navigate in viscous fluid environments. In a similar manner, synthetic colloidal microswimmers are capable of mimicking complex biolocomotion by means of simple self-propulsion mechanisms. Although experimentally the speed of active particles can be controlled by e.g. self-generated chemical and thermal gradients, an in-situ change of swimming direction remains a challenge. In this work, we study self-propulsion of half-coated spherical colloids in critical binary mixtures and show that the coupling of local body forces, induced by laser illumination, and the wetting properties of the colloid, can be used to finely tune both the colloid’s swimming speed and its directionality. We experimentally and numerically demonstrate that the direction of motion can be reversibly switched by means of the size and shape of the droplet(s) nucleated around the colloid, depending on the particle radius and the fluid’s ambient temperature. Moreover, the aforementioned features enable the possibility to realize both negative and positive phototaxis in light intensity gradients. Our results can be extended to other types of half-coated microswimmers, provided that both of their hemispheres are selectively made active but with distinct physical properties.

Abstract
We numerically studied the behaviour of colloidal suspensions in one-phase binary liquid mixtures under shear flows. Far from the phase-separation point, the colloidal particles are well dispersed and the suspension exhibits a Newtonian viscosity. When the mixture is close to the coexistence curve, the colloidal particles aggregate by attractive interactions due to the concentration heterogeneity caused by surface wetting, and the viscosity of the suspension increases. Near the phase-separation point, the viscosity increases when the fraction of species favoured by the surface of a colloid particle is small. The mixture also exhibits shear thinning behaviour, since the aggregated structure is rearranged into small clusters due to the shear flow. Our simulations indicate that the concentration profile around each particle is not significantly disturbed by the shear flow at the onset of the structural rearrangements. The effective interaction is independent of the shear flow and remains isotropic.

Abstract
Micromotors, which can be moved at a micron scale, have special functions and can perform microscopic tasks. They have a wide range of applications in various fields with the advantages of small size and high efficiency. Both high speed and efficiency for micromotors are required in various conditions. However, the dynamical mechanism of bubble-driven micromotors movement is not clear, owing to various factors affecting the movement of micromotors. This paper reviews various factors acting on micromotor movement, and summarizes appropriate methods to improve the velocity and efficiency of bubble-driven micromotors, from a mechanical view. The dynamical factors that have significant influence on the hydrodynamic performance of micromotors could be divided into two categories: environment and geometry. Improving environment temperature and decreasing viscosity of fluid accelerate the velocity of motors. Under certain conditions, raising the concentration of hydrogen peroxide is applied. However, a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide is not applicable. In the environment of low concentration, changing the geometry of micromotors is an effective mean to improve the velocity of micromotors. Increasing semi-cone angle and reducing the ratio of length to radius for tubular and rod micromotors are propitious to increase the speed of micromotors. For Janus micromotors, reducing the mass by changing the shape into capsule and shell, and increasing the surface roughness, is applied. This review could provide references for improving the velocity and efficiency of micromotors.

Abstract
Gold-capped Janus particles immersed in a near-critical binary mixture can be propelled using illumination. We employ a nonisothermal diffuse interface approach to investigate the self-propulsion mechanism of a single colloid. We attribute the motion to body forces at the edges of a micronsized droplet that nucleates around the particle. Thus, the often-used concept of a surface velocity cannot account for the self-propulsion. The particle's swimming velocity is related to the droplet shape and size, which is determined by a so-called critical isotherm. Two distinct swimming regimes exist, depending on whether the droplet partially or completely covers the particle. Interestingly, the dependence of the swimming velocity on temperature is nonmonotonic in both regimes.
