Controlled stepwise-synthesis of core-shell Au@MIL-100 (Fe) nanoparticles for sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection

Reliable detection of malachite green by self-assembled SERS substrates based on gold-silicon heterogeneous nano pineapple structures

Morphology regulation of heterodimer nanoparticles and the use of their asymmetric features for further practical applications are crucial because of the rich optical properties and various combinations of heterodimers. This work used silicon to asymmetrically wrap half of a gold sphere and grew gold branches on the bare gold surface to form heterogeneous nano pineapples (NPPs) which can effectively improve Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties through chemical enhancement and lightning-rod effect respectively. The asymmetric structures of NPPs enabled them to self-assemble into the monolayer membrane with consistent branch orientation. The prepared substrate had high homogeneity and better SERS ability than disorganized substrates, and achieved reliable detection of malachite green (MG) in clams with a detection limit of 7.8 × 10-11 M. This work provided a guide to further revise the morphology of heterodimers and a new idea for the use of asymmetric dimers for practically photochemical and biomedical sensing.

Iron-based metal-organic framework/graphene oxide composite electrodes for efficient flow-injection amperometric detection of dexamethasone

A highly stable flow-injection amperometric sensor for dexamethasone (DEX) was developed using a pencil graphite electrode (PGE) modified with Fe-based metal organic frameworks, MIL-100(Fe) and graphene oxide composite materials (MIL-100(Fe)/GO). Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the MIL-100(Fe) composites. The MIL-100(Fe)/GO-modified PGE (denoted MIL-100(Fe)/GO/PGE) was further electrochemically characterized using cyclic voltammetry. As an electrode material, MIL-100(Fe) is a sensing element that undergoes oxidation from Fe(ii)-MOF to Fe(iii)-MOF, and GO possesses high conductivity and a large surface area, which exhibits high absorbability. In the presence of DEX, Fe(iii) is reduced, which accelerates electron transfer at the electrode interface. Therefore, DEX can be quantitatively detected by analyzing the anodic current of MIL-100(Fe). When coupled with amperometric flow injection analysis, excellent performance can be obtained even when a low detection potential is applied (+0.10 V vs. Ag/AgCl). The concentration was linear in the range 0.10-5.0 μM and 0.010-5.0 mM with LOD of 0.030 μM based on 3(sd/slope). The modified electrode also exhibited a remarkably stable response under optimized conditions, and up to 55 injections can be used per electrode. The sensor exhibits high repeatability, reproducibility, and anti-interference properties when used for DEX detection. The effective determination of dexamethasone in real pharmaceutical and cosmetic samples demonstrated the feasibility of the electrochemical sensor, and the results were in good agreement with those obtained from the HPLC-DAD analysis. Acceptable percentage recoveries from the spiked pharmaceutical and cosmetic samples were obtained, ranging from 93-111% for this new method compared with 84-107% for the HPLC-DAD standard method.

Developing a magnetic SERS nanosensor utilizing aminated Fe-Based MOF for ultrasensitive trace detection of organophosphorus pesticides in apple juice

The unreasonable use of organophosphorus pesticides leads to excessive pesticide residues in food, seriously threatening public health, and the potential of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology, incorporating a metal-organic framework, is substantial for the rapid detection of trace pesticide residues. Here, a novel Fe3O4@NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@Ag (FNMA) SERS nanosensor was developed. Results indicated that the FNMA had a high enhancement factor of 1.53 × 108, a low limit of detection (LOD) of 4.55 × 10-12 M, and a relative standard deviation of 7.73 % for 4-nitrothiophenol, demonstrating its good SERS sensitivity and uniformity, and also possessed good storage stability for one month. In quantifying fenthion and methyl parathion in standard solutions and apple juice in the range of 0.05/0.02-20 mg/L, it showed LODs of 3.02 × 10-3 mg/L and 1.43 × 10-3 mg/L, and 0.0407 and 0.0075 mg/L, respectively, demonstrating potentials in ultrasensitive trace detection of pesticides in food.

Ultrasensitive detection strategy for CAP by molecularity imprinted SERS sensor based on multiple synergistic enhancement of SiO2@AuAg with MOFs@Au signal carrier

Chloramphenicol (CAP) residue in food can cause great harm to human health, it is important to develop a rapid and sensitive method to detect CAP. Here, molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was combined with metal-organic frameworks@Au (MOFs@Au) collaborative construction surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based aptasensor for CAP ultrasensitive detection. MOFs@Au first carried the Raman signal molecule toluidine blue (TB) and aptamer to form MOFs@Au@TB@Apt. In addition, rMIP (CAP was removed) was dropped onto the uniform three-dimensional (3D) SERS substrate SiO2@AuAg to form SiO2@AuAg@rMIP. In the presence of target CAP, it could be specifically captured with rMIP by covalent interaction and was recognised by the aptamer. During this time, SiO2@AuAg@rMIP@CAP could selectively connect MOFs@Au@TB@Apt to realise synergistic enhance the Raman signal. Based on this principle, the proposed SERS aptasensor exhibits excellent sensitivity with a detection limit of 7.59×10-13 M for CAP, providing a new strategy for trace detection in food.

Ratiometric SERS quantification of SO2 vapor based on Au@Ag-Au with Raman reporter as internal standard

Practical gas sensing application requires sensors to quantify target analytes with high sensitivity and reproducibility. However, conventional surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor lacks reproducibility and quantification arising from variations of "hot spot" distribution and measurement conditions. Here, a ratio-dependent SERS sensor was developed for quantitative label-free gas sensing. Au@Ag-Au nanoparticles (NPs) were filtered onto anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) forming Au@Ag-Au@AAO SERS substrate. 4-MBA was encapsulated in the gap of Au@Ag-Au and served as the internal standard (IS) to calibrate SERS signal fluctuation for improved quantification ability. Combined with headspace sampling method, SO2 residue in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can be extracted and captured on the immediate vicinity of Au@Ag-Au surface. The intensity ratio I613 cm-1/I1078 cm-1 showed excellent linearity within the range of 0.5 mg/kg-500 mg/kg, demonstrating superior quantification performance for SO2 detection. Signals for concentration as low as 0.05 mg/kg of SO2 could be effectively collected, much lower than the strictest limit 10 mg/kg in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Combined with a handheld Raman spectrometer, handy and quantitative TCM quality evaluation in aspect of SO2 residue was realized. This ratiometric SERS sensor functioned well in rapid on-site SO2 quantification, exhibiting excellent sensitivity and simple operability.

Hierarchical-Bioinspired MOFs Enhanced Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Proteins exhibit complex and diverse multi-dimensional structures, along with a wide range of functional groups capable of binding metal ions. By harnessing the unique characteristics of proteins, it is possible to enhance the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and modify their morphology. Here, the utilization of biomineralized bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein as a template for synthesizing Mil-100 with superior microwave absorption (MA) properties is investigated. The multi-dimensional structure and abundant functional groups of biomineralized BSA protein make it an ideal candidate for guiding the synthesis of Mil-100 with intricate network structures. The BSA@Mil-100 synthesized using this method exhibits exceptional uniformity and monodispersity of nanocrystals. The findings suggest that the BSA protein template significantly influences the regulation of nanocrystal and microstructure formation of Mil-100, resulting in a highly uniform and monodisperse structure. Notably, the synthesized 2-BSA@Mil-100 demonstrates a high reflection loss value of -58 dB at 8.85 GHz, along with a maximum effective absorption bandwidth value of 6.79 GHz, spanning from 6.01 to 12.8 GHz. Overall, this study highlights the potential of utilizing BSA protein as a template for MOF synthesis, offering an effective strategy for the design and development of high-performance MA materials.

A Recent Advancement in Food Quality Assessment: Using MOF-Based Sensors: Challenges and Future Aspects

Monitoring food safety is crucial and significantly impacts the ecosystem and human health. To adequately address food safety problems, a collaborative effort needed from government, industry, and consumers. Modern sensing technologies with outstanding performance are needed to meet the growing demands for quick and accurate food safety monitoring. Recently, emerging sensors for regulating food safety have been extensively explored. Along with the development in sensing technology, the metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-based sensors gained more attention due to their excellent sensing, catalytic, and adsorption properties. This review summarizes the current advancements and applications of MOFs-based sensors, including colorimetric, electrochemical, luminescent, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and electrochemiluminescent sensors. and also focused on the applications of MOF-based sensors for the monitoring of toxins such as heavy metals, pesticide residues, mycotoxins, pathogens, and illegal food additives from food samples. Future trends, as well as current developments in MOF-based materials.

"On-site" analysis of pesticide residues in complex sample matrix by plasmonic SERS nanostructure hybridized hydrogel

BACKGROUND

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been extensively used in biomedical and food safety detection due to its advantages of label-free, in situ and fingerprint spectrum. However, it is challenging to develop an excellent SERS substrate that possesses all three of these characteristics including sensitivity, repeatability and stability.

RESULTS

In this work, a specific sodium alginate hydrogel flexible SERS substrate encapsulated gold-silver core-shell nanoparticles (Au@Ag NPs) was developed to address the aforementioned issue. The Au@Ag NPs with SERS "hot spot" structure were evenly dispersed in the hydrogel, which achieved the direct and high efficiency detection of the pesticide residues from complex sample matrix. Taking thiram as objective, this SERS substrates exhibit high sensitivity (detection limit of approximately 1 × 10-10 mol/L), excellent stability (maintain above 78.35 % of SERS activity after 7 weeks) and outstanding repeatability (RSD in one substrate as low as 3.56 %). Furthermore, the flexible hydrogel SERS substrates can be used to analyze a variety of small molecules in real samples (juices, vegetables and fruits), without the need for a laborious pretreatment process.

SIGNIFICANCE

In light of the aforementioned benefits, the functional flexible hydrogel SERS substrates present a reliable platform for the accurate and on-site measurement of chemical contaminants from complex samples.

Novel filter-press single-step cleanup approach facilitated rapid screening and accurate quantification of 112 veterinary drugs in aquatic products

In this study, a novel filter-press cleanup column was developed as a single-step cleanup approach for the rapid screening and quantification of 112 veterinary drugs in fish samples. Fish muscle samples were extracted with acetonitrile and ethyl acetate, sequentially. After concentration and reconstitution, N-propylethylenediamine (PSA) sorbent, packed in filter-press column, allows rapid single-step cleanup operation, while UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-HRMS provides high-precision mass information in multi-residue screening. Under optimum settings, the detection and quantification limits were validated at 0.5 and 2.0 μg·kg-1, for all analytes, respectively. The ranges of recoveries were from 35.3 to 138.4%. Most of these target analytes (82%) could be measured with recoveries between 60 and 130%, and intra-day RSDs ranging from 1.9 to 26.1%. This method was further applied to evaluate the residual of veterinary drugs in fish samples from four cities in China, and results demonstrated its practicability for multi-residue monitoring veterinary residues for food safety administration.

Ultrasensitive Multiplex Imaging of Cell Surface Proteins via Core-Shell Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Nanoprobes

Cell surface proteins, as important components of biological membranes, cover a wide range of important markers of diseases and even cancers. In this regard, precise detection of their expression levels is of crucial importance for both cancer diagnosis and the development of responsive therapeutic strategies. Herein, a size-controlled core-shell Au@ Copper(II) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Au@Cu-BTC) nanomaterial was synthesized for specific and simultaneous imaging of multiple protein expression levels on cell membranes. The porous shell of Cu-BTC constructed on Au nanoparticles enabled effective loading of Raman reporter molecules, followed by further modification of the targeting moieties, which equipped the nanoprobe with good specificity and stability. Additionally, given the flexibility of the types of Raman reporter molecules available for loading, the nanoprobes were also demonstrated with good multichannel imaging capabilities. Ultimately, the present strategy of electromagnetic and chemical dual Raman scattering enhancement was successfully applied for the simultaneous detection of varied proteins on cell surfaces with high sensitivity and accuracy. The proposed nanomaterial holds promising applications in biosensing and therapeutic fields, which could not only provide a general strategy for the synthesis of metal-organic framework-based core-shell surface-enhanced Raman scattering nanoprobes but also enable further utilization in multitarget and multichannel cell imaging.

Fabrication of a metal organic framework (MOF)-modified Au nanoparticle array for sensitive and stable SERS sensing of paraquat in cereals

A high-performance Au@MIL-101/PMMA/DT surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate was fabricated for sensitive and stable detection of paraquat by self-assembling metal organic framework-modified Au nanoparticles (Au@MIL-101) on a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film and then immobilizing the formed substrate onto a duct tape (DT). The highly closely packed Au@MIL-101 array provided intensive hotspots for SERS sensing. The MIL-101 layer modified on the surface of Au nanoparticles could absorb paraquat to the electromagnetic enhancement area of Au nanoparticles. The DT on the bottom made the substrate smoother, which is beneficial for achieving a more stable detection performance. As a result, the constructed substrate exhibited outstanding uniformity with relative standard deviations of 9.47% and storage stability for 2 months. For detecting paraquat, the substrate showed a low detection limit of 7.1 × 10^-9  M (1.83 µg/kg) and wide linear range from 10^-8 to 10^-2  M. Furthermore, the substrate showed good detection performance in real cereal samples with desirable recovery rates from 91.57% to 102.32%.

Core-shell Au@MIL-100 (Fe) as an enhanced substrate for flunixin meglumine ultra-sensitive detection

This study aimed to develop and validate a simple and efficient surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method to determine flunixin meglumine (FM) residues in animal tissues through using core-shell Au@MIL-100 (Fe) as enhanced substrate. Au@MIL-100 (Fe) composite material was synthesized by coating metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) on the surface of gold nanoparticles using the solvothermal method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectrum, SERS spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and EDX elemental mapping results revealed that the structural composition of the compound has good properties with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties, high adsorption capacity, excellent SERS sensitivity and stability. When it was used as SERS substrate, the results of quantitative analysis of FM in pork showed a linear range of 0.10-50 mg·L^-1 with a correlation coefficient (R²) of 0.9819, the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.15 mg·g^-1, the recovery rate of 88.94%∼104.77%, the intra- and inter- batch relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.57%∼14.22% and 0.18%∼3.44% respectively. Further verification results of the existing standard methods showed no significant difference between the SERS and UV methods (P < 0.05), as well as demonstrating that the SERS method has optimal precision, accuracy, and practicality. These results exposed that Au@MIL-100 (Fe) as a SERS substrate has great potential in rapid and on-site detection analysis.

Metal-organic frameworks based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy technique for ultra-sensitive biomedical trace detection

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted widespread interest due to their unique and unprecedented advantages in microstructures and properties. Besides, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology has also rapidly developed into a powerful fingerprint spectroscopic technique that can provide rapid, non-invasive, non-destructive, and ultra-sensitive detection, even down to single molecular level. Consequently, a considerable amount of researchers combined MOFs with the SERS technique to further improve the sensing performance and broaden the applications of SERS substrates. Herein, representative synthesis strategies of MOFs to fabricate SERS-active substrates are summarized and their applications in ultra-sensitive biomedical trace detection are also reviewed. Besides, relative barriers, advantages, disadvantages, future trends, and prospects are particularly discussed to give guidance to relevant researchers.

Noninvasive Diagnosis of Gastric Cancer Based on Breath Analysis with a Tubular Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensor

SERS-based breath analysis as an emerging technique has attracted increasing attention in cancer screening. Here, eight aldehydes and ketones in the human breath are reported as the VOC biomarkers identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and applied further for the noninvasive diagnosis of gastric cancer (GC) with a tubular SERS sensor. The tubular SERS sensor is prepared with a glass capillary loaded with ZIF-67-coated silver particles (Ag@ZIF-67), which offers Raman enhancement from the plasmonic nanoparticles and gas enrichment from the metal-organic framework (MOF) shells. The composite materials are modified with 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) to capture different aldehyde and ketone compounds. The tubular sensor is served simultaneously as a gas flow channel and a detection chamber, bringing a higher gas capture efficiency than the planar SERS sensor. As a proof-of-concept, the tubular SERS sensor is successfully employed to screen gastric cancer patients with an accuracy of 89.83%, based on the noninvasive, rapid, and easily operated breath analysis. The results demonstrate that the established breath analysis method provides an excellent alternative for the screening of GC and other diseases.

SERS determination of dopamine using metal-organic frameworks decorated with Ag/Au noble metal nanoparticle composite after azo derivatization with p-aminothiophenol

A specific surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) assay for dopamine (DA) based on an azo derivatization reaction is proposed for the first time by preparation of p-aminothiophenol (PATP)-modified composite SERS substrate, composed of metal-organic framework (MIL-101) decorated with Au and Ag nanoparticles. As the result, the SERS method for detection of the azo reaction between PATP and DA exhibits superior sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. A reasonable linearity in the range 10^-6 to 10^-10 mol∙L^-1 is achieved, and the limit of detection is 1.2 × 10^-12 mol∙L^-1. The reactive SERS assay is free from interference in complex physiological fluid. The feasibility of the proposed SERS method for the detection of DA levels in fetal bovine serum (FBS) samples and human serum samples is validated by HPLC-MS methods, displaying promising application potential in early disease diagnosis.

Synthesis, modifications and applications of MILs Metal-organic frameworks for environmental remediation: The cutting-edge review

Ever-increasing anthropogenic activities are radically deteriorating the environment by causing severe pollution. Thus, curtailing the environmental pollution and promotion of sustainable development, are the hot issues confronted by scientists in this modern era. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been highly recognized as emerging promising materials for environmental remediation due to their versatile structure and extraordinary properties. Among them, MILs (MIL = Matérial Institute of Lavoisier) are the series of MOFs mostly known for their incredible stability, unique tailorable pore structures, and astounding versatile environmental applications. Their exclusive physiochemical properties and multifunctionality make them proficient for a wide range of pollutants removal in the exposure of versatile harsh environments, compared to other MOFs. This piece of research summarizes the state-of-the-art of development of MILs on the broad spectrum, highlighting their specificities, such as synthesis techniques, modifications and applications for environmental remediation. However, MILs wonderful properties and extraordinary applications in multiple fields, their deployment on practical and commercial-scale pollutants remediation is hindered by insufficient scientific research on underlying mechanisms and relationships. Henceforth, this review not only signifies the emerging importance of MILs for environmental applications but also indicates the urgency to maximize the scientific research for exploitation of MOFs on a practical level and promotion of green technologies for environmental remediation.

Metal-organic framework engineered corn-like SERS active Ag@Carbon with controllable spacing distance for tracking trace amount of organic compounds

Probing water-soluble organic compounds via Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique could be helpful to prevent harmful impacts of polluted water. A key limitation of restraining SERS technique in probing these pollutants is the difficulty to control the spacing distance of plasmonic nanoparticles within 10 nm so that SERS effect can be efficiently induced. Herein, a strategy of mass-producing Ag-based SERS active material with tunable spacing distance is reported. In brevity, metal-organic framework (MOF) engineered corn-like Ag@Carbon is synthesized by simply thermal treating Ag-MOF. The thermal treatment in-situ turns Ag⁺ into Ag nanoparticles (NPs), resulting in Ag NPs well-dispersed on the surface of the carbonized MOF and forming ordered SERS hotspots. Due to the spatial distance of Ag⁺ directly depends on the molecular diameter of MOF organic ligands, spacing distance of Ag NP is fixed at around 7 nm. Theoretical analysis and experimental study confirm that the uniformly distributed Ag NPs lead to desirable SERS activity. Further study evidences the presented corn-like Ag@Carbon could be a good candidate for tacking organic compounds with satisfactory sensitivity, specificity and low detection limit (10^-8 M). Conclusively, these impressive results indicate a bright future of adopting the proposed strategy to design future SERS active materials.

Layered filter paper-silver nanoparticle-ZIF-8 composite for efficient multi-mode enrichment and sensitive SERS detection of thiram

A SERS substrate FP/Ag/ZIF-8 composed of filter paper (FP), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) film arranged in a layered structure was developed for sensitive detection of pesticide thiram in various samples. Roles of these components in analyte adsorption and Raman signal enhancement were studied using a pesticide intermediate 4-Aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as the probe. The substrate showed high adsorption and optimized SERS response with thick metal organic framework (MOF) coating (125 nm), which is different from previous reported plasmonic particle-MOF composite substrate, where thinnest MOF coating produced the strongest SERS signal. Detection limit for 4-ATP improved 1000-fold on FP/Ag/ZIF-8 (3 pM) compared with that on FP/Ag (3 nM). Importantly, the FP/Ag/ZIF-8 with porous and flexible property can efficiently capture pesticide thiram in different real samples using soaking, filtration or swabbing operation. The subsequent SERS detection of thiram showed advantages of low detection limit (soaking, LOD: 0.04 nM in lake water), fast detection (filtration, within 1 min in peach juice) and suitable for curve surface analysis (swabbing, LOD: 0.1 ng/cm² on apple peel), respectively. The substrate also displayed good reproducibility, high stability and size-selective response for thiram detection. Such a layered plasmonic particle/MOF hybrid may hold great promise for toxicant analysis in environment and food.

A hydrophilic-hydrophobic graphitic carbon nitride@silver hybrid substrate for recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based detection without the coffee-ring effect

There is growing interest in developing a multifunctional surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate to deal with the challenge in the pretreatment-free detection and degradation of hazardous organic pollutants in water. Herein, a hydrophilic-hydrophobic graphitic carbon nitride@silver (g-C₃N₄@Ag) hybrid substrate was exploited as a potential candidate for the recyclable detection of dye molecules. Such a sophisticated substrate not only showed a significant SERS activity with a high enhancement factor of 3.21 × 10⁶ triggered by the significantly aggregated Ag nanoparticles, but also possessed an outstanding self-cleaning property via visible-light irradiation. Furthermore, the effective weakening of the coffee-ring effect was also facilitated by the hydrophilic-hydrophobic structure, resulting in excellent uniformity and reproducibility. Ultimately, the applicability of the developed recyclable SERS substrate in the monitoring of trace malachite green was demonstrated. It is expected that the innovative SERS substrate has great potential for application in highly sensitive, stable, and recyclable on-site analysis, especially for organic pollutant treatment and environmental protection.

Plasmonic tunable Ag-coated gold nanorod arrays as reusable SERS substrates for multiplexed antibiotics detection

Antibiotic contaminants in aqueous media pose a serious threat to human and ecological environments. Therefore, it is necessary to develop robust strategies to detect antibiotic residues. For this purpose, a self-assembly and in situ electrochemical reduction method is utilized to tailor silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-coated GNRs (AgNPs/GNRs) large-scale vertical arrays. These AgNPs/GNRs arrays exhibit outstanding surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activities because of abundant Raman hot-spots among the adjacent AgNPs and GNRs, but also excellent stability and reproducibility due to the close-packed arrayed nanostructure. These remarkable features validate this arrayed substrate for high-sensitivity 4-aminothiophenol analysis with a detection limit of 0.35 pM and self-cleaning via electrochemical stripping of the adsorbed analytes and AgNPs from the GNRs arrays, therefore realizing renewable SERS applications. Moreover, the distinct SERS performance of AgNPs/GNRs arrays is verified via the analysis of multiplexed antibiotics at tens of picomolar level and no apparent changes of SERS activities are observed when recyclability is explored. The result demonstrates that the proposed AgNPs/GNRs arrays provide a novel strategy for avoiding conventional, disposable SERS substrates, as well as expanding SERS applications for simultaneous sensing and stripping of environmental contaminants.

Recent Advances in Metal Organic Frameworks Based Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates: Synthesis and Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are supramolecular nanomaterials, in which metal ions or clusters are connected by organic ligands to form crystalline lattices with highly ordered periodic porous network structure. MOFs have been widely applied in various fields, such as catalyst, sample preparation, and sensing. In recent years, MOFs based surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have attracted much attention since MOFs can largely improve the performance of metallic SERS substrates toward target enrichment and signal enhancement. MOFs have been exploited in SERS analysis to tackle some challenges that bare metal substrates cannot achieve. Combination of MOFs and SERS improved the sensitivity of traditional SERS analysis and extended the application scope of SERS. With the increasing exploration of MOFs based SERS substrates, there is a great demand to review the advances in these researches. Herein, this review concentrated on summarizing the preparation and applications of MOFs based SERS substrates. Representative researches were discussed to better understand the property of MOFs based SERS substrates. The advantages of MOFs based SERS substrates were highlighted, as well as their limitations. In addition, the challenges, opportunities, and future trends in MOFs based SERS analysis were tentatively discussed.

Ultrathin ZIF-8 wrapping on Au-dotted Ag-nanowires for highly selective SERS-based CO2 gas detection

Ultrathin ZIF-8 wrapping was constructed on Au-dotted Ag-nanowires to obtain Ag@Au@ZIF-8. A thin film (Ag@Au@ZIF-8 NWs/TF) was constructed to selectively adsorb and enrich CO2 molecules, which solved the problem that SERS signals could not be detected due to the poor affinity of the metal surface and the low concentration of gas molecules.

RATIONALE

Gold-iron bimetallic materials have applications in many fields, especially in nanotechnology and biomedicine. The chemistry of iron-doped gold clusters is still not fully understood but opens up the possibility of developing new materials, e.g. of gold cages doped with iron atoms. There have been several theoretical studies on these clusters but only a few experimental studies.

METHODS

Laser desorption ionisation (LDI) was used for the generation of Au-Fe bimetallic clusters via laser ablation (337 nm nitrogen laser) of the synthesised nano-composite {nano-gold; Fe(III) 1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylate}, i.e. {AuNPs, Fe-MOF}, while a quadrupole ion trap time-of-flight mass spectrometer, equipped with a reflectron, was used to acquire mass spectra.

RESULTS

A {AuNPs, Fe-MOF} nano-composite was prepared and found suitable for the LDI generation of Au_m Fe_n clusters. In addition to Au_m ^+/- (m = 1-35) clusters, a series of positively and negatively charged gold-iron Au_m Fe_n ^+/- clusters were generated. The mass spectra exhibited evidence for the clusters containing up to five iron atoms. In total, 113 binary Au_m Fe_n ^+/- clusters (m = 1-35, n = 1-5) were identified in the gas phase.

CONCLUSIONS

A synthesised {AuNPs, iron(III)-1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylate MOF} nano-composite was found suitable for the generation of many new gold-iron clusters and mass spectrometry was shown to be an efficient technique for the determination of the cluster stoichiometry. A broad series of over 100 bimetallic Au_m Fe_n clusters, some of them suggested to be gold cages doped with iron atoms (for m = 12 and higher), not only demonstrate a rich and complex chemistry, but also open wide possibilities of biomedical applications.

From IR to x-rays: gaining molecular level insights on metal-organic frameworks through spectroscopy

This topical review focuses on the application of several types of spectroscopy methods to a class of solid state materials called metal organic frameworks (MOFs). MOFs are self-assembled, porous crystalline materials composed of metal cluster nodes linked through coordination bonds with organic or organometallic molecular constituents. Their unique host-guest properties make them attractive for many adsorption-based applications such as gas storage and separation, catalysis, sensing and others. While much research focuses on the development and application of these materials, fundamental studies of MOF properties and molecular level host-guest interactions behind their functionality have become a significant research direction on its own. Spectroscopy methods are now ubiquitous tools in this pursuit. This review focuses on the application of three classes of spectroscopy methods to MOF materials: vibrational, optical electronic and x-ray spectroscopies. Following brief introductions to each method that include pertinent theory and experimental considerations, we present a broad overview of the types of MOF systems that have been studied, with specific examples and important new molecular level insights highlighted along the way. The current status of spectroscopic studies of MOFs is presented at the end along with some perspectives on the future directions in this area of research.

A composite prepared from gold nanoparticles and a metal organic framework (type MOF-74) for determination of 4-nitrothiophenol by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of a gold core and a metal-organic framework shell (type MOF-74) were synthesized via one-pot synthesis. The NPs exhibit highly sensitive and stable SERS activity for the detection of 4-nitrothiophenol, with a specific band at 1337 cm^-1. The method has a linear response in 0.10-10 μmol·L^-1 analyte concentration range and a lower detection limit of 69 nmol·L^-1. The potential application of this novel SERS substrate was evaluated by two model reactions involving 4-nitrothiophenol. The first involves in-situ SERS monitoring of the surface plasmon-induced nitration of aromatic rings without adding conventional acid catalyst. The second involves the photocatalytic reduction of 4-nitrothiophenol to 4-thioaminophenol in the presence of Au/MOF-74 under 785-nm laser irradiation. The plasmon-assisted dimerization of 4-nitrothiophenol to form 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene can also be monitored simultaneously. Uniform arrangement of gold nanoparticles on magnetic core particles with a metal-organic framework shell as a substrate for sensitive and reproducible SERS based assays: Application to the quantitation of Malachite Green and thiram

Magnetite (Fe₃O₄) spheres acting as a core were evenly decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and coated with a shell of a metal organic framework (MOF) of type MIL-100(Fe). The resulting hybrid nanomaterial of type Fe₃O₄-Au@MIL-100(Fe) hybrid is shown to be a viable new SERS substrate. The integration of magnetic core, build-in plasmonic gold nanoparticles and a MOF shell endows the Fe₃O₄-Au@MIL-100(Fe) with highly efficient magnetic separation and enrichment ability, abundant interparticle hotspots, and significant chemical enhancement effect. This leads to a large enhancement, and greatly improved reproducibility of the SERS signals as shown for Malachite Green (MG) and the fungicide thiram. MG in solution can be quantified with a 50-fold lower detection limit (0.14 nM for peak at 1398 cm^-1) and largely improved reproducibility (RSD = 9%, 1398 cm^-1) when compared to the use of (a) AuNPs anchored on MIL-100(Fe) (RSD = 27%, 1186 cm^-1), or (b) AuNPs embedded in MIL-100(Fe) (RSD = 36%, 1398 cm^-1). The method was applied to the quantitation of MG and thiram in spiked water samples. The lower limits of detection are 4.4 nM for MG (1398 cm^-1) and 15 nM for thiram (1380 cm^-1), respectively, and signals' RSDs are 13% (1398 cm^-1) and 5% (1380 cm^-1) for MG and thiram, respectively. Fabrication of a Flexible Gold Nanorod Polymer Metafilm via a Phase Transfer Method as a SERS Substrate for Detecting Food Contaminants

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been widely used in detection of food safety due to the nondestructive examination property. Here, we reported a flexible SERS film based on a polymer-immobilized gold nanorod polymer metafilm. Polystyrene-polyisoprene-polystyrene (SIS), a transparent and flexible, along with having excellent elasticity, polymer, was chosen as the main support of gold nanorods. A simple phase transfer progress was adopted to mix the gold nanorods with the polymer, which can further be used in most water-insoluble polymers. The SERS film performed satisfactorily while being tested in a series of standard Raman probes, like crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG). Moreover, the excellent reproducibility and elastic properties make the film a promising substrate in practical detection. Hence, the MG detection on the fish surface and trace thiram detection on orange pericarp were inspected with detection results of 1 × 10^-10 and 1 × 10^-6 M, which were below the demand of the National standard of China, exactly matching the realistic application requirements.

An updated roadmap for the integration of metal–organic frameworks with electronic devices and chemical sensors

This review highlights the steps needed to bring the properties of MOFs from the chemical lab to the microelectronics fab.

Polydopamine-reinforced magnetization of zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-7 for magnetic solid-phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the air-water environment

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) consist of metal nodes connected to imidazolate linkers, having both the properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and inorganic zeolites, such as controllable pore sizes, high porosity and surface areas, as well as exceptional thermal and chemical stability, thereby making them a class of attractive materials for diverse analytical applications. In this study, we reported a facile magnetization process of ZIF-7 (zinc benzimidazolate) for simultaneous magnetic extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by simply mixing ZIF-7 and polydopamine (PDA)-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (PDA@Fe3O4) in solutions. Functional groups (-OH and -NH2), provided by PDA as a highly efficient molecular linker, could attract and anchor ZIF-7 through noncovalent adsorption and covalent cross-link interactions, thereby promoting the complete magnetization of ZIFs and enhancing their stability and reusability. The bridging ligand benzimidazolate, could be bonded with PAHs because of its high surface area, large pores, accessible coordinative unsaturated sites (π-complexation), and π-π stacking action. This ZIF-based magnetic solid-phase extraction (SPE), coupled with gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS), was further evaluated for analysis of PAHs from rainwater and air samples of particulate matter less than 2.5μm in diameter (PM2.5). The main effective parameters, including ionic strength, solution pH, extraction time, desorption solvent and desorption time, were investigated, respectively. Under optimized conditions, the developed method based on Fe3O4@PDA/ZIF-7 gave detection limits of 0.71-5.79ng/L, and quantification limits of 2.50-19.2ng/L for PAHs, respectively. The relative standard deviations for intra-day and inter-day analyses were in the range of 3.1-9.1% and 6.1-12.7%, respectively. The PAHs founded in PM2.5 were in the range of 0.40-6.79ng/m(3). Good recoveries (>82%) with low relative standard deviations (≤9.2%) were achieved. This method was demonstrated to be an accurate, convenient and sensitive pretreatment procedure for trace analysis of environmental water and air samples.
