Sequence-Specific Relay Recognition of Multiple Anions: An Interplay between Proton Donors and Acceptors

Ratiometric detection of analyte is highly deserving since the technique is free from background correction. This work reports the design and synthesis of a pyridine-end oligo p-phenylenevinylene (OPV) derivative, 1 and its application in ratiometric dual-mode (both colorimetric and fluorogenic) recognition of dual anions, bisulfate (LOD=12.5 ppb) followed by fluoride (LOD=18.2 ppb) by sequence-specific relay (SPR) technique. The colorless probe turns brown with addition of bisulfate and again becomes colorless with the sequential addition of fluoride ion. In addition to such naked-eye color change, interestingly the ratiometric spectroscopic signals are reversible and evidently, the probe is reusable for several cycles. Besides, in presence of bisulfate, the protonated probe molecules, owing to their larger amphiphilic characteristics, formed self-assembled nanostructures. In addition to colorimetric and fluorescent changes, 1 H NMR titration and systematic DFT study evidently establish the underneath proton transfer mechanisms. Such reusable OPV-based chemosensor particularly with the capability of naked-eye recognition of dual anions using the SPR technique is seminal and possibly the first report in the literature.

Regulation of the Assembled Structure of a Flexible Porphyrin Derivative Containing Tetra Isophthalic Acids by Coronene or Different Pyridines

Based on previous research, a new coassembly formed by a porphyrin derivative (IPETPP), which contains a flexible substituent of m-phthalic acid, is observed with coronene (COR) molecules at a higher concentration. Besides, a fresh IPETPP self-assembly formed at a lower concentration and another new coassembly with COR molecules are obtained. Moreover, the addition of a series of bipyridines alters the diamond arrangement of IPETPP, which enhances the stability of the two-component structures. It is unprecedented that bipyridine derivatives break intermolecular hydrogen bonds containing m-phthalic acid substituents. All the coassemblies are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Combined with density functional theory, the formation mechanism of the assembled structures is revealed. These results would contribute to understanding the interfacial crystal behaviors and probably provide an efficient pathway to regulate the binary structures.

Tuning Gel State Properties of Supramolecular Gels by Functional Group Modification

The factors affecting the self-assembly process in low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) were investigated by tuning the gelation properties of a well-known gelator N-(4-pyridyl)isonicotinamide (4PINA). The N-H∙∙∙N interactions responsible for gel formation in 4PINA were disrupted by altering the functional groups of 4PINA, which was achieved by modifying pyridyl moieties of the gelator to pyridyl N-oxides. We synthesized two mono-N-oxides (INO and PNO) and a di-N-oxide (diNO) and the gelation studies revealed selective gelation of diNO in water, but the two mono-N-oxides formed crystals. The mechanical strength and thermal stabilities of the gelators were evaluated by rheology and transition temperature (Tgel) experiments, respectively, and the analysis of the gel strength indicated that diNO formed weak gels compared to 4PINA. The SEM image of diNO xerogels showed fibrous microcrystalline networks compared to the efficient fibrous morphology in 4PINA. Single-crystal X-ray analysis of diNO gelator revealed that a hydrogen-bonded dimer interacts with adjacent dimers via C-H∙∙∙O interactions. The non-gelator with similar dimers interacted via C-H∙∙∙N interaction, which indicates the importance of specific non-bonding interactions in the formation of the gel network. The solvated forms of mono-N-oxides support the fact that these compounds prefer crystalline state rather than gelation due to the increased hydrophilic interactions. The reduced gelation ability (minimum gel concentration (MGC)) and thermal strength of diNO may be attributed to the weak intermolecular C-H∙∙∙O interaction compared to the strong and unidirectional N-H∙∙∙N interactions in 4PINA.

Spontaneously hierarchical self-assembly of nanofibres into fluorescent spherical particles: a leap from organogels to macroscopic solid spheres

The spontaneous hierarchical self-assembly of organic small molecules into macroscopic architectures with excellent photophysical properties and highly-ordered structures has rarely been reported to date. In this work, we find that the organogel of SY1 formed in ethyl acetate could spontaneously assemble into macroscopic spherical particles with a unique morphology and photophysical properties. Upon increasing the aging time, the gel gradually collapsed and then transformed into many macroscopic spheres (SY1-balls) with an average diameter of ca. 500 μm and strong yellow emission. In view of the emission properties and the porous structure of the SY1-balls, they were successfully applied in the adsorption and detection of heavy metal ions. More interestingly, SY1 shows different assembly behaviours in toluene solution when mixed with a triphenylamine derivative (TPA1). Macroscopic particles (ST-balls) with a core-shell structure were obtained, which were quite different from the SY1-balls in morphology and emission colour. So far as we know, many studies have focused on the change of the micromorphology of a gel, while the spontaneous self-assembly of organogels into macroscopic particles has been reported in this work for the first time. This work enriches the present study on organogels and plays an important role in further understanding the hierarchical self-assembly of organogels.

Electrochemical probing of hydrogelation induced by the self-assembly of a donor-acceptor complex comprising pyranine and viologen

A long-tailed methyl viologen (DMV) forms a co-assembly (1 : 1) with pyranine to result in pronounced hydrogelation. The systematic evolution of the hydrogel promoted by the donor-acceptor interactions could be probed electrochemically in a non-invasive manner.

Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Luminescent Tartrate-Bridged Chiral Binuclear Tb(III) Complexes in Ethanol

A new family of supramolecular metalloamphiphiles carrying two metal centers is developed. They are formed by bridging two coordinatively unsaturated lipophilic Tb³⁺ complexes (TbL⁺) with chiral dicarboxylate anions. The formation of bridging coordination bonds is confirmed using UV spectroscopy, induced circular dichroism (ICD), increased luminescence intensity of TbL⁺, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS) analysis. These supramolecular metalloamphiphiles hierarchically self-assemble in ethanol to give luminescent nanospheres, as observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The two hydroxyl groups introduced in the bridging ligands of [TbL]₂(d-/l-tartrate) significantly promote self-assembly by increasing coherent forces via intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The observed self-assembly in ethanol also merits mention because such polar alcoholic media have been unfavorable for conventional molecular self-assemblies. The present approach offers a new molecular design strategy for composable metalloamphiphiles.

Remarkable Role of C-I···N Halogen Bonding in Thixotropic 'Halo'gel Formation

Halogen-bonding-induced self-assembly in the solution of equimolar mixtures of certain pyridyl-ended oligo p-phenylenevinylene (OPV)-derivatives with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene is reported. The mode of self-assembly, that is, cocrystallization, thixotropic gelation, or precipitation, depends strongly on the nature of chains (n-alkyl chains as a function of length or short oxyethylene chain) appended to the OPV-backbone as well as on the cooling rate of the corresponding hot solution. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the cocrystals reveal the "infinite" chain formation via C-I···N halogen-bonding interactions between the two components. In addition, multiple noncovalent interactions induce cross-links among these halogen-bonded "infinite" chains. Interestingly, the molecular packing in the "Cogel" bearing OPV-derivative with oxyethylene chains is found to be very similar to that of the cocrystal of the same.
