Synthesis and Self-Assembly Properties of Bola-Amphiphilic Glycosylated Lipopeptide-Type Supramolecular Hydrogels Showing Colour Changes Along with Gel-Sol Transition

Supramolecular hydrogels formed by self-assembly of low-molecular-weight amphiphiles (hydrogelators) have attracted significant attention, as smart and soft materials. However, most of the observed stimuli-responsive behaviour of these supramolecular hydrogels are limited to gel-sol transitions. In this study, we present bola-amphiphilic glycosylated lipopeptide-type supramolecular hydrogelators that exhibit reversible thermochromism along with a gel-sol transition. The bola-amphiphiles have mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-phenylalanine (F) as a short peptide moiety. We investigate and discuss the effects of the number of F residues on the gelation ability and the morphology of the self-assembled nanostructures.

Structural diversification of bola-amphiphilic glycolipid-type supramolecular hydrogelators exhibiting colour changes along with the gel-sol transition

We diversified the structures of bola-amphiphilic glycolipid-type supramolecular hydrogelators that exhibited reversible thermochromism along with a gel-sol transition. The hydrogelators were designed and synthesized to have homo- or hetero-saccharides on each end of their molecules. Herein, the effects of the saccharides' structure on the gelation ability are discussed.

Soft-Matter Nanotubes: A Platform for Diverse Functions and Applications

Self-assembled organic nanotubes made of single or multiple molecular components can be classified into soft-matter nanotubes (SMNTs) by contrast with hard-matter nanotubes, such as carbon and other inorganic nanotubes. To date, diverse self-assembly processes and elaborate template procedures using rationally designed organic molecules have produced suitable tubular architectures with definite dimensions, structural complexity, and hierarchy for expected functions and applications. Herein, we comprehensively discuss every functions and possible applications of a wide range of SMNTs as bulk materials or single components. This Review highlights valuable contributions mainly in the past decade. Fifteen different families of SMNTs are discussed from the viewpoints of chemical, physical, biological, and medical applications, as well as action fields (e.g., interior, wall, exterior, whole structure, and ensemble of nanotubes). Chemical applications of the SMNTs are associated with encapsulating materials and sensors. SMNTs also behave, while sometimes undergoing morphological transformation, as a catalyst, template, liquid crystal, hydro-/organogel, superhydrophobic surface, and micron size engine. Physical functions pertain to ferro-/piezoelectricity and energy migration/storage, leading to the applications to electrodes or supercapacitors, and mechanical reinforcement. Biological functions involve artificial chaperone, transmembrane transport, nanochannels, and channel reactors. Finally, medical functions range over drug delivery, nonviral gene transfer vector, and virus trap.

Binary Supramolecular Gel of Achiral Azobenzene with a Chaperone Gelator: Chirality Transfer, Tuned Morphology, and Chiroptical Property

Binary supramolecular gels based on achiral azobenzene derivatives and a chiral chaperone gelator, long-alkyl-chain-substituted L-Histidine (abbreviated as LHC18) that could assist many nongelling acids in forming gels, were investigated in order to fabricate the chiroptical gel materials in a simple way. It was found that although the carboxylic acid-terminated achiral azobenzene derivatives could not form gels in any solvents, when mixed with LHC18 they formed the co-gels and self-assembled into various morphologies ranging from nanotubes and loose nanotubes to nanosheets, depending on the substituent groups on the azobenzene moiety. The ether linkage and the number of carboxylic acid groups attached to the azobenzene moiety played important roles. Upon gel formation, the localized molecular chirality in LHC18 could be transferred to the azobenzene moiety. Combined with the trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene, optically and chiroptically reversible gels were generated. It was found that the gel based on azobenzene with two carboxylic acid groups and ether linkages showed clear optical reversibility but less chiroptical reversibility, whereas the gel based on azobenzene with one carboxylic acid and an ether linkage showed both optical and chiroptical reversibility. Thus, new insights into the relationship among the molecular structures of the azobenzene, self-assembled nanostructures in the gel and the optical and chiroptical reversibility were disclosed.

Soft Nanotubes Derivatized with Short PEG Chains for Thermally Controllable Extraction and Separation of Peptides

By means of a two-step self-assembly process involving three components, including short poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains, we produced two different types of molecular monolayer nanotubes: nanotubes densely functionalized with PEG chains on the outer surface and nanotubes densely functionalized with PEG chains in the nanochannel. Turbidity measurements and fluorescence spectroscopy with an environmentally responsive probe suggested that the PEG chains underwent dehydration when the nanotubes were heated above 44-57 °C and rehydration when they were cooled back to 25 °C. Dehydration of the exterior or interior PEG chains rendered them hydrophobic and thus able to effectively extract hydrophobic amino acids from the bulk solution. Rehydration of the PEG chains restored their hydrophilicity, thus allowing the extracted amino acids to be squeezed out into the bulk solutions. The nanotubes with exterior PEG chains exhibited selectivity for all of the hydrophobic amino acids, whereas the interior PEG chains were selective for hydrophobic amino acids with an aliphatic side chain over hydrophobic amino acids with an aromatic side chain. The higher selectivity of the latter system is attributable that the extraction and back-extraction processes involve encapsulation and transportation of the amino acids in the nanotube channel. As the result, the latter system was useful for separation of peptides that differed by only a single amino acid, whereas the former system showed no such separation ability.

Supramolecular Self-Assembly into Biofunctional Soft Nanotubes: From Bilayers to Monolayers

The inner and outer surfaces of bilayer-based lipid nanotubes can be hardly modified selectively by a favorite functional group. Monolayer-based nanotubes display a definitive difference in their inner and outer functionalities if bipolar wedge-shaped amphiphiles, so-called bolaamphiphiles, as a constituent of the monolayer membrane pack in a parallel fashion with a head-to-tail interface. To exclusively form unsymmetrical monolayer lipid membranes, we focus herein on the rational molecular design of bolaamphiphiles and a variety of self-assembly processes into tubular architectures. We first describe the importance of polymorph and polytype control and then discuss diverse methodologies utilizing a polymer template, multiple hydrogen bonds, binary and ternary coassembly, and two-step self-assembly. Novel biologically important functions of the obtained soft nanotubes, brought about only by completely unsymmetrical inner and outer surfaces, are discussed in terms of protein refolding, drug nanocarriers, lectin detection, a chiral inducer for achiral polymers, the tailored fabrication of polydopamine, and spontaneous nematic alignment.

Soft nanotubes acting as confinement effecters and chirality inducers for achiral polythiophenes

Depending on their nanochannel sizes, soft nanotubes were able to not only control the conformation and aggregation state of encapsulated achiral polythiophene boronic acids but also induce chirality in the polythiophene chains that exhibit chiral recognition abilities for d, l-sugars.
