Abstract
Two new spin crossover (SCO) Fe(III) compounds were prepared, their structures were analysed and their magnetic properties were investigated. An exhaustive analysis of the effects of halogen substitution and aromatic ring functionalisation on the magnetic properties of non-solvated Fe(III) perchlorate complexes has been performed. Through comparative analysis, different magnetic profiles were found for the compounds studied, namely F (1), Cl (2), H (3), Br (4a, 4b), and I (5). Using tools like Hirshfeld analysis, the study revealed patterns in octahedral distortions and deviations from the ideal octahedral geometry. The SCO phenomenon as the conducting wire in this study, emphasises the influence of intermolecular interactions on the low spin (LS) to high spin (HS) transitions in these halogen-substituted complexes. The prevalence of H⋯H contributions has been demonstrated, albeit being the weakest and an inverse strength relationship in H⋯X interactions ranging from F to I. The findings not only interpret the intricate balance between halogen substitution, functionalisation, and intermolecular interactions in modulating magnetic properties but also direct future works in designing similar molecular systems.

Abstract
A novel FeIII complex [Fe(Hex-tnal)2]BPh4 (1) with a tridentate N2O ligand having an n-hexyl chain, Hex-Htnal (=1-((((1-hexyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol), is reported. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that 1 exhibits a two-step spin crossover (SCO) transition in the 400-10 K temperature range, including an unusual gradual χMT change above RT (300-345 K) and a hysteretic χMT jump in a narrow temperature range of 345-357 K. These behaviors were also characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. Variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the order-disorder transition and conformational change of the hexyl chains and the symmetry change associated with the re-entrant structural phase transition, namely triclinic P1̄ (100-275 K) ↔ monoclinic C2/c (296-340 K) ↔ triclinic P1̄ (360 K), are coupled to variations in intermolecular interactions and the N4O2 coordination environment, resulting in the occurrence of the unusual two-step SCO transition of 1. This study demonstrates that the flexible motion of alkyl substituents in the supramolecular lattice influences the occurrence of anomalous magnetic switching properties.

Abstract
A series of mononuclear manganese(III) complexes [Mn(X-sal2-323)](ReO4) (X = 5 Cl, 1; X = 5 Br, 2; X = 3,5 Cl, 3; X = 3,5 Br, 4; and X = 5 NO2, 5), containing hexadentate ligands prepared using the condensation of N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylenediamine and 5- or 3,5-substituted salicylaldehyde, has been synthesized. Variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical analyses, and theoretical calculations have been used to explore the role of various ligand substituents in the spin-state switching behavior of the prepared manganese(III) complexes. All five complexes consist of an analogous distorted octahedral monocationic MnN4O2 surrounding offered by the flexible hexadentate ligand and ReO4- as the counter anion. However, a disordered water molecule was detected in complex 4. Complexes 1 (X = 5 Cl) and 5 (X = 5 NO2) show gradual and complete spin-state switching between the high-spin (HS) (S = 2) and the low-spin (LS) (S = 1) state with T1/2 values of 146 and 115 K respectively, while an abrupt and complete transition at 95 K was observed for complex 2 (X = 5 Br). Alternatively, complex 3 (X = 3, 5 Cl) exhibits an incomplete and sharp transition between the HS and LS states at 104 K, while complex 4 (X = 3, 5 Br) (desolvated) remains almost LS up to 300 K and then displays gradual and incomplete SCO at a higher temperature. The nature of the spin-state switch and transition temperature suggest that the structural effect (cooperativity) plays a more significant role in comparison with the electronic effect coming from various substituents (Cl, Br, and NO2), which is further supported by the detailed structural, electrochemical, and theoretical studies.

Abstract
Non-centrosymmetric spin-switchable systems are of interest for their prospective applications as magnetically active non-linear optical materials and in multiferroic devices. Chiral resolution of simple spin-crossover chelate complexes into the Δ and Λ forms offers a facile route to homochiral magnetic switches, which could be easily enantiomerically enriched. Here, we report the spontaneous resolution of a new hysteretic spin-crossover complex, [MnIII (sal2 323)]SCN ⋅ EtOH (1), into Δ and Λ forms, without the use of chiral reagents, where sal2 323 is a Schiff base resulting from condensation of 1,2-bis(3-aminopropylamino)ethane with 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde. The enantiopurity of the Δ and Λ isomers was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction and circular dichroism. Quantum chemistry calculations were used to investigate the electronic structure. The opening of a wide 80 K thermal hysteresis window at high temperature highlights the potential for good magneto-optical function at ambient temperature for materials of this type.

Abstract
We report the structural and magnetic properties of two new Mn3+ complex cations in the spin crossover (SCO) [Mn(R-sal2323)]+ series, in lattices with seven different counterions in each case. We investigate the effect on the Mn3+ spin state of appending electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups on the phenolate donors of the ligand. This was achieved by substitution of the ortho and para positions on the phenolate donors with nitro and methoxy substituents in both possible geometric isomeric forms. Using this design paradigm, the [MnL1]+ (a) and [MnL2]+ (b) complex cations were prepared by complexation of Mn3+ to the hexadentate Schiff base ligands with 3-nitro-5-methoxy-phenolate or 3-methoxy-5-nitro-phenolate substituents, respectively. A clear trend emerges with adoption of the spin triplet form in complexes 1a-7a, with the 3-nitro-5-methoxy-phenolate donors, and spin triplet, spin quintet and thermal SCO in complexes 1b-7b with the 3-methoxy-5-nitro-phenolate ligand isomer. The outcomes are discussed in terms of geometric and steric factors in the 14 new compounds and by a wider analysis of electronic choices of Mn3+ with related ligands by comparison of bond length and angular distortion data of previously reported analogues in the [Mn(R-sal2323)]+ family. The structural and magnetic data published to date suggest a barrier to switching may exist for high spin forms of Mn3+ in those complexes with the longest bond lengths and highest distortion parameters. A barrier to switching from low spin to high spin is less clear but may operate in the seven [Mn(3-NO2-5-OMe-sal2323)]+ complexes 1a-7a reported here which were all low spin in the solid state at room temperature.

Abstract
Two coordination polymers, Fe(LOBF3)(CH3COO)(CH3CN)2]n•nCH3CN and [Fe(LO-)2AgNO3BF4•CH3OH]n•1.75nCH3OH•nH2O (LO- = 3,3'-(4-(4-cyanophenyl)pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(1-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-1H-pyrazol-5-olate)), were obtained via a PCET-assisted process that uses the hydroxy-pyrazolyl moiety of the ligand and the iron(II) ion as sources of proton and electron, respectively. Our attempts to produce heterometallic compounds under mild conditions of reactant diffusion resulted in the first coordination polymer of 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridines to retain the core N3(L)MN3(L). Under harsh solvothermal conditions, a hydrogen atom transfer to the tetrafluoroborate anion caused the transformation of the hydroxyl groups into OBF3 in the third coordination polymer of 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridines. This PCET-assisted approach may be applicable to produce coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks with the SCO-active core N3(L)MN3(L) formed by pyrazolone- and other hydroxy-pyridine-based ligands.

Abstract
Four mononuclear manganese(III) complexes coordinated with photo-active hexadentate azobenzene ligands, [Mn(5azo-sal2-323)](X) (X = Cl, 1; X = BF4, 2; X = ClO4, 3; X = PF6, 4), were prepared. The impact of various counter anions on the stabilization and switching of the spin state of the manganese(III) center was explored through detailed magneto-structural investigation using variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, and spectroelectrochemical studies, along with theoretical calculations. All four complexes consisted of an isostructural monocationic distorted octahedral MnN4O2 coordination environment offered by the hexadentate ligand and Cl-, BF4-, ClO4-, and PF6- as counter anions respectively. Complex 1 with a spherical Cl- counter anion showed a reversible and gradual spin-state switching between low-spin (LS) (S = 1) and high-spin (HS) (S = 2) states above 400 K, where non-covalent cation-anion interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the LS state. While, irrespective of the shape of the counter anion, complexes 2-4 remained in the HS state throughout the measured temperature range of 300-2 K, where strong π-π interaction between the azobenzene motifs among cationic units played a substantial role in stabilizing the HS state. Furthermore, magnetic data analyses revealed significantly large zero-field splitting in the S = 1 state for 1 (D = 19.4 cm-1, E/D = 0.008) in comparison with that in the S = 2 state for 2-4 (D = 3.99-4.97 cm-1, E/D = 0.002-0.195). Spectroelectrochemical investigations revealed the quasi-reversible reduction and oxidation of the manganese(III) center to manganese(II) and manganese(IV), respectively. A detailed theoretical calculation at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory was carried out to better understand the magneto-structural correlation.

Abstract

Structural, magnetic,
and spectroscopic data on a Mn3+ spin-crossover complex
with Schiff base ligand 4-OMe-Sal2323, isolated in crystal
lattices with five different counteranions,
are reported. Complexes of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal2323)]X where X
= ClO4– (1), BF4– (2), NO3– (3), Br– (4), and I– (5) crystallize isotypically in the chiral
orthorhombic space group P21212 with a range of spin state preferences for the [Mn(4-OMe-Sal2323)]+ complex cation over the temperature range
5–300 K. Complexes 1 and 2 are high-spin,
complex 4 undergoes a gradual and complete thermal spin
crossover, while complexes 3 and 5 show
stepped crossovers with different ratios of spin triplet and quintet
forms in the intermediate temperature range. High-field electron paramagnetic
resonance was used to measure the zero-field splitting parameters
associated with the spin triplet and quintet states at temperatures
below 10 K for complexes 4 and 2 with respective
values: DS=1 = +23.38(1) cm–1, ES=1 = +2.79(1) cm–1,
and DS=2 =
+6.9(3) cm–1, with a distribution of E parameters for the S = 2 state. Solid-state circular
dichroism (CD) spectra on high-spin complex 1 at room
temperature reveal a 2:1 ratio of enantiomers in the chiral conglomerate,
and solution CD measurements on the same sample in methanol show that
it is stable toward racemization. Solid-state UV–vis absorption
spectra on high-spin complex 1 and mixed S = 1/S = 2 sample 5 reveal different
intensities at higher energies, in line with the different electronic
composition. The statistical prevalence of homochiral crystallization
of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal2323)]+ in five lattices with
different achiral counterions suggests that the chirality may be directed
by the 4-OMe-Sal2323 ligand. Zero-field
splitting parameters of the spin triplet and
quintet forms of a spin-crossover Mn3+ complex stabilized
in lattices with different counterions are measured by high-field
electron paramagnetic resonance at different frequencies. The homochiral
crystallization of the enantiopure Δ or Λ forms of the
chelate complex, despite the use of achiral anions, is attributed
to the steric influence of the ligand substituent.

Abstract
![]()
Pinned and mobile
ferroelastic domain walls are detected in response
to mechanical stress in a Mn3+ complex with two-step thermal
switching between the spin triplet and spin quintet forms. Single-crystal
X-ray diffraction and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy on [MnIII(3,5-diCl-sal2(323))]BPh4 reveal three
distinct symmetry-breaking phase transitions in the polar space group
series Cc → Pc → P1 → P1(1/2). The transition mechanisms involve coupling between structural and
spin state order parameters, and the three transitions are Landau
tricritical, first order, and first order, respectively. The two first-order
phase transitions also show changes in magnetic properties and spin
state ordering in the Jahn–Teller-active Mn3+ complex.
On the basis of the change in symmetry from that of the parent structure, Cc, the triclinic phases are also ferroelastic, which has
been confirmed by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. Measurements of
magnetoelectric coupling revealed significant changes in electric
polarization at both the Pc → P1 and P1 → P1(1/2) transitions, with opposite signs. All these phases are polar, while P1 is also chiral. Remanent electric polarization was detected
when applying a pulsed magnetic field of 60 T in the P1→ P1(1/2) region of bistability
at 90 K. Thus, we showcase here a rare example of multifunctionality
in a spin crossover material where the strain and polarization tensors
and structural and spin state order parameters are strongly coupled.

Abstract
A MnIII spin crossover complex with atypical two-step hysteretic thermal switching at 74 K and 84 K shows rich structural-magnetic interplay and magnetic-field-induced spin state switching below 14 T with an onset below 5 T. The spin states, structures, and the nature of the phase transitions are elucidated via X-ray and magnetization measurements. An unusual intermediate phase containing four individual sites, where 1 / 4 are in a pure low spin state, is observed. The splitting of equivalent sites in the high temperature phase into four inequivalent sites is due to a structural reorganization involving a primary and a secondary symmetry-breaking order parameter that induces a crystal system change from orthorhombic→monoclinic and a cell doubling. Further cooling leads to a reconstructive phase transition and a monoclinic low-temperature phase with two inequivalent low-spin sites. The coupling between the order parameters is identified in the framework of Landau theory.

Abstract
Three tetraphenylborates of mononuclear Mn(III) cation complexes with hexadentate ligands, the products of the reaction between a N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylenediamine and salicylaldehydes with the different haloid substitutions at the 5 or 3,5 positions, have been synthesized: [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]BPh4 (1), [Mn(3,5-diCl-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]BPh4 (2) and [Mn(3,5-Br,Cl-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]BPh4 (3). Their crystal structure, dielectric constant (ϵ) and magnetic properties have been studied. Ligand substituents have a dramatic effect on the structure and magnetic properties of the complexes. With decreasing temperature, the complex (1) shows a gradual spin crossover from the high-spin state (HS) to the HS:LS intermediate phase, followed by an abrupt transition to the low-spin state (LS) without changing the crystal symmetry. The complexes 2 and 3 are isostructural, but have fundamentally different properties. Complex 2 demonstrates two structural phase transitions related to sharp spin crossovers from the HS to the HS:LS intermediate phase at 137 K and from the intermediate phase to the LS at 87 K, while complex 3 exhibits only one spin transition from the HS to the HS:LS intermediate phase at 83 K.

Elastic Modeling of Two-Step Transitions in Sterically Frustrated 1D Binuclear Spin-Crossover Chains. Symmetry (Basel) 2021. Abstract
Among the large family of spin-crossover materials, binuclear systems play an important role due to their specific molecular configurations, allowing the presence of multi-step transitions and elastic frustration. Although this issue benefited from a significant number of spin-based theories, there is almost no elastic description of the spin transition phenomenon in binuclear systems. To overcome this deficiency, in this work we develop the first elastic modeling of thermal properties of binuclear spin-crossover solids. At this end, we investigated a finite spin-crossover open chain constituted of elastically coupled binuclear (A = B) blocks, ⋯A=B−A=B−A=B⋯, in which the considered equivalent A and B sites may occupy two configurations, namely low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) states. The sites of the binuclear unit interact via an intramolecular spring and couple to the neighboring binuclear units via other springs. The model also includes the change of length inside and between the binuclear units subsequent to the spin state changes. When injecting an elastic frustration inside the binuclear unit in the LS state, competing interactions between the intra- and the inter-binuclear couplings emerge. The latter shows that according to the intra- and inter-binuclear elastic constants and the strength of the frustration, multi-step transitions are derived, for which a specific self-organization of type (HS = HS)-(LS-LS)-(HS = HS)⋯ is revealed and discussed. Finally, we have also studied the relaxation of the metastable photoinduced HS states at low temperature, in which two relaxation regimes with transient self-organized states were identified when monitoring the elastic frustration rate or the ratio of intra- and intermolecular elastic interactions. These behaviors are reminiscent of the thermal dependence of the order parameters of the system. The present model opens several possibilities of extensions of elastic frustrations acting in polynuclear spin-crossover systems, which may lead to other types of spin-state self-organizations and relaxation dynamics.

Abstract
The effect of counter anions on thermally induced manganese(iii)-based SCO within the [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]Y family has been investigated. All the complexes are crystallized without any lattice solvents. Crystal packing and intermolecular forces influence the spin-state stabilization and spin-transition profiles. Magnetic measurements indicate that salts with octahedral anions, [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]PF6 (1), [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]AsF6 (2) and [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]SbF6 (3), show HS electronic configurations between 2 and 300 K, and there exist π-π stackings between the phenyl groups from the neighboring [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]+ cations. As for the tetrahedral anions, complex [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]BF4 (4) exhibits a gradual and incomplete spin conversion. Complex [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)] ClO4 (5) shows a nearly complete SCO with T1/2 = 100 K. The remaining salts with spherical anions form Nam-HX (X = Cl, Br, I) hydrogen bonds between Mn(iii) cations and counterions. Complexes [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]Cl (6) and [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)] Cl0.28Br0.72 (7) feature gradual SCO behaviors with T1/2 = 220 K and 235 K, respectively. Complex [Mn(5-F-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]I (8) exhibits a more gradual spin conversion and is far from a complete HS state with a χMT value of 1.89 cm3 mol-1 K at 400 K.

Abstract
Two new mononuclear Fe(II) polymorphs, [(C2H5)4N]2[Fe(py3C-OEt)(NCS)3]2 (1) and [(C2H5)4N][Fe(py3C-OEt)(NCS)3] (2) (py3C-OEt = tris(pyridin-2-yl)ethoxymethane), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, by magnetic and photomagnetic measurements, and by detailed variable-temperature infrared spectroscopy. The molecular structure, in both complexes, is composed of the same anionic [Fe(py3C-OEt)(NCS)3]- complex (two units for 1 and one unit for 2) generated by coordination to the Fe(II) metal center of one tridentate py3C-OEt tripodal ligand and three terminal κN-SCN coligands. Magnetic studies revealed that polymorph 2 displays a high-spin (HS) state over the entire studied temperature range (300-10 K), while complex 1 exhibits an abrupt and complete spin crossover (SCO) transition at ca. 132.3 K, the structural characterizations of which, performed at 295 and 100 K, show a strong modification, resulting from the thermal evolutions of the Fe-N bond lengths and of the distortion parameters (∑ and Θ) of the FeN6 coordination sphere, in agreement with the presence of HS and low-spin (LS) states at 295 and 100 K, respectively. This thermal transition has been also confirmed by the thermal evolution of the maximum absorbance for ν(NCS) vibrational bands recorded in the temperature range 200-10 K. In 1 the signature of a metastable photoinduced HS state has been observed using photomagnetic and photoinfrared spectroscopy, leading to a similar T(LIESST) relaxation temperature (LIESST = light-induced excited spin-state trapping) of 70 K.

We investigate giant magnetoelectric coupling at a Mn3+ spin crossover in [MnIIIL]BPh4 (L = (3,5-diBr-sal)2323) with a field-induced permanent switching of the structural, electric, and magnetic properties. An applied magnetic field induces a first-order phase transition from a high spin/low spin (HS-LS) ordered phase to a HS-only phase at 87.5 K that remains after the field is removed. We observe this unusual effect for DC magnetic fields as low as 8.7 T. The spin-state switching driven by the magnetic field in the bistable molecular material is accompanied by a change in electric polarization amplitude and direction due to a symmetry-breaking phase transition between polar space groups. The magnetoelectric coupling occurs due to a γη2 coupling between the order parameter γ related to the spin-state bistability and the symmetry-breaking order parameter η responsible for the change of symmetry between polar structural phases. We also observe conductivity occurring during the spin crossover and evaluate the possibility that it results from conducting phase boundaries. We perform ab initio calculations to understand the origin of the electric polarization change as well as the conductivity during the spin crossover. Thus, we demonstrate a giant magnetoelectric effect with a field-induced electric polarization change that is 1/10 of the record for any material.

Abstract
Three mononuclear manganese(iii) complexes based on flexible hexadentate ligands obtained from the condensation of N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylenediamine and salicylaldehyde or salicylaldehyde with substitutions at the 5 or 3,5 positions, namely [Mn(X-sal2-323)](BPh4) (X = 5 H, 1; X = 5 Br, 2, and X = 3,5 Br, 3) have been synthesized. The impact of ligand substituents has been studied by variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and magnetic, spectroscopic and electrochemical investigations. The complexes have an analogous monocationic MnN4O2 surrounding offered by the flexible hexadentate ligand in a distorted octahedral geometry. Complex 1 remains in the high spin state over the entire temperature range, while complex 2 shows a reversible and complete two-step thermo-induced spin-state switching. An incomplete spin-state switching from a high spin to an intermediate high-spin low-spin (1 : 1) state was observed for complex 3. Single-crystal X-ray structural studies show the presence of three different spin states in 2 during the occurrence of the spin-state switching process. Electrochemical investigations showed that the reduced state of manganese(iii) centers in 3 is easily accessible in comparison to complexes 1 and 2.

Abstract
Spin state preferences for a cationic Mn3+ chelate complex in four different crystal lattices are investigated by crystallography and SQUID magnetometry. The [MnL1]+ complex cation was prepared by complexation of Mn3+ to the Schiff base chelate formed from condensation of 4-methoxysalicylaldehyde and 1,2-bis(3-aminopropylamino)ethane. The cation was crystallized separately with three polyatomic counterions and in one case was found to cocrystallize with a percentage of unreacted 4-methoxysalicylaldehyde starting material. The spin state preferences of the four resultant complexes [MnL1]CF3SO3·xH2O, (1), [MnL1]PF6·xH2O, (2), [MnL1]PF6·xsal·xH2O, (2b), and [MnL1]BPh4, (3), were dependent on their ability to form strong intermolecular interactions. Complexes (1) and (2), which formed hydrogen bonds between [MnL1]+, lattice water and in one case also with counterion, showed an incomplete thermal spin crossover over the temperature range 5-300 K. In contrast, complex (3) with the BPh4-, counterion and no lattice water, was locked into the high spin state over the same temperature range, as was complex (2b), where inclusion of the 4-methoxysalicylaldehyde guest blocked the H-bonding interaction.

Abstract
A mononuclear manganese(iii) complex containing a flexible hexadentate chelating ligand has been prepared and characterized by performing, at various temperatures, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and magnetic, spectroscopic, and electrochemical studies. The complex was shown to consist of an MnN4O2 octahedral coordination environment, and to exhibit reversible two-step thermally induced spin-state switching, a gradual one at 168 K and an abrupt one at 103 K. Structural analyses revealed the existence of three spin-states, namely high-spin, low-spin, and intermediate states, during the spin-state switching process. Electrochemistry studies showed the quasi-reversible reduction and oxidation of the manganese(iii) center with a comparatively easily accessible reduced state.

Abstract
Domain wall motion is detected for the first time during the transition to a ferroelastic and spin state ordered phase of a spin crossover complex. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) revealed two distinct symmetry-breaking phase transitions in the mononuclear Mn3+ compound [Mn(3,5-diBr-sal2 (323))]BPh4 , 1. The first at 250 K, involves the space group change Cc→Pc and is thermodynamically continuous, while the second, Pc→P1 at 85 K, is discontinuous and related to spin crossover and spin state ordering. Stress-induced domain wall mobility was interpreted on the basis of a steep increase in acoustic loss immediately below the the Pc-P1 transition.

Abstract
Structural, magnetic and electromechanical changes resulting from spin crossover between the spin quintet and spin triplet forms of a mononuclear Mn3+complex embedded in six lattices with different charge balancing counterions are reported. Isostructural ClO4-and BF4-salts (1) and (2) each have two unique Mn3+sites which follow different thermal evolution pathways resulting in a crossover from the spin quintet form at room temperature to a 1:1 spin triplet:quintet ratio below 150 K. The PF6-(3) and NO3-(4) salts which each have one unique Mn3+site show a complete conversion from spin quintet to spin triplet over the same temperature range. A complete two step spin crossover is observed in the CF3SO3-lattice (5) with a 1:1 ratio of spin quintet and spin triplet forms at intermediate temperature, while the BPh4-lattice (6) stabilizes the spin triplet form over most of the temperature range with gradual and incomplete spin state switching above 250 K. An electromechanical piezoresponse was detected in NO3-complex4despite crystallization in a centrosymmetric space group. The role of deformations associated with stress-induced spin triplet-spin quintet switching in breaking the local symmetry are discussed and computational analysis is used to estimate the energy gap between the two spin states.

Abstract
Multistep spin crossover (SCO) compounds have attracted much attention, since they can be great candidates for high-density multinary memory devices. The introduction of substituents, such as methyl (Me), chloro (Cl), bromo (Br), and methoxy (MeO) groups, at para positions to the phenyl-substituted tripodal N6 ligand-coordinated SCO FeII material, [FeLPh](NTf2)2 [where LPh = tris(2-{[(1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methylidene]amino}ethyl)amine and NTf2 = bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide], affords a new family of solvent-free FeII complexes: [FeL4-R-Ph](NTf2)2 {where L4-R-Ph = tris[2-({[1-(4-R-phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl]methylidene}amino)ethyl]amine, where R = Me (1), Cl (2), Br (3), and MeO (4)}. 1 shows temperature invariant high-spin (HS) state, whereas the others show spin transitions with different characteristics, such as half-SCO (4), two-step SCO (3), and unusual three-step SCO with hysteresis (2). Mössbauer and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopic studies of them support the magnetic susceptibilities results. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the electronic effect of different substituents on magnetic properties is negligible in this FeII family. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that 1-4 has a similar packing arrangement with three-dimensional supramolecular network via intermolecular π-π and CH···π interactions between complex cations, and CH···X (X = O, N, and F) hydrogen bonding interactions between cations and inherently frustrated NTf2 anions. Variable-temperature structural studies unveil a variety of stepped SCO behaviors of 2-4 and deactivation of SCO in 1 are governed by the regulation of ordering of NTf2 counteranions through the subtle modification of terminal substituents of complex cations. Quantitative light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) effect was observed for 2-4 via green light irradiation (532 nm) at 10 K. This study opens up a new way for systematic control of magnetic response from no SCO to half-, two-step, and finally three-step SCO with hysteresis by precise tuning of the ordering of flexible NTf2 anions included in the supramolecular network with potentially SCO-active complex cations.

Abstract
Three high-spin phases recently discovered in the spin-crossover system Mn(taa) are identified through analysis by a combination of first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulation as a low-temperature Jahn-Teller ordered (solid) phase, an intermediate-temperature dynamically correlated (liquid) phase, and an uncorrelated (gas) phase. In particular, the Jahn-Teller liquid phase arises from competition between mixing with low-spin impurities, which drive the disorder, and intermolecular strain interactions. The latter are a key factor in both the spin-crossover phase transition and the magnetoelectric coupling. Jahn-Teller liquids may exist in other spin-crossover materials and materials that have multiple equivalent Jahn-Teller axes.

Abstract
The chromium(III) complex [CrIII (ddpd)2 ]3+ (molecular ruby; ddpd=N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridine-2-yl-pyridine-2,6-diamine) is reduced to the genuine chromium(II) complex [CrII (ddpd)2 ]2+ with d4 electron configuration. This reduced molecular ruby represents one of the very few chromium(II) complexes showing spin crossover (SCO). The reversible SCO is gradual with T1/2 around room temperature. The low-spin and high-spin chromium(II) isomers exhibit distinct spectroscopic and structural properties (UV/Vis/NIR, IR, EPR spectroscopies, single-crystal XRD). Excitation of [CrII (ddpd)2 ]2+ with UV light at 20 and 290 K generates electronically excited states with microsecond lifetimes. This initial study on the unique reduced molecular ruby paves the way for thermally and photochemically switchable magnetic systems based on chromium complexes complementing the well-established iron(II) SCO systems.

Abstract
This paper reports the syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic properties of spin crossover (SCO) salts of formulae [Mn(naphth-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]SbF6 (1), [Mn(naphth-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]AsF6 (2), [Mn(naphth-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]PF6·1/2CH3OH (3) and [Mn(naphth-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]ClO4 (4), where (naphth-sal-N-1,5,8,12)2- (2,2'-((1E,14E)-2,6,10,14-tetraazapentadeca-1,14-diene-1,15-diyl)diphenolate) is a big conjugated hexadentate Schiff-base ligand. Magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrated that complexes 1 and 2 showed a gradual one-step SCO between the high-spin (HS, S = 2) and low-spin (LS, S = 1) states without thermal hysteresis. The transition temperatures T1/2 of the SbF6 (1) and AsF6 (2) salts estimated from the magnetic susceptibility measurements are 164 and 171 K, respectively. The existence of the crystal solvent of complex 3 changes the supramolecular packing, leading to close ππ stacking interactions between the phenyl groups of the ligands. These close stacking interactions hinder the flexibility of the whole ligand, precluding the spin transformation of complex 3 and leading to its stabilization in the HS state in the temperature range of 2-300 K. For 4, crystal structure analysis indicates that the reduction in the anion size leads to close contacts between the naphthalene rings. These C-Hπ interactions provide a means for preventing the spin crossover occurring at low temperatures.

Spin Crossover in 3D Metal Centers Binding Halide-Containing Ligands: Magnetism, Structure and Computational Studies. SUSTAINABILITY 2020. Abstract
The capability of a given substance to change its spin state by the action of a stimulus, such as a change in temperature, is by itself a very challenging property. Its interest is increased by the potential applications and the need to find sustainable functional materials. 3D transition metal complexes, mainly with octahedral geometry, display this property when coordinated to particular sets of ligands. The prediction of this behavior has been attempted by many authors. It is, however, made very difficult because spin crossover (SCO), as it is called, occurs most often in the solid state, where besides complexes, counter ions, and solvents are also present in many cases. Intermolecular interactions definitely play a major role in SCO. In this review, we decided to analyze SCO in mono- and binuclear transition metal complexes containing halogens as ligands or as substituents of the ligands. The aim was to try and find trends in the properties which might be correlated to halogen substitution patterns. Besides a revision of the properties, we analyzed structures and other information. We also tried to build a simple model to run Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and calculate several parameters hoping to find correlations between calculated indices and SCO data. Although there are many experimental studies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction structures, there are only few examples with the F, Cl, Br and series. When their intermolecular interactions were not very different, T1/2 (temperature with 50% high spin and 50% low spin states) usually increased with the calculated ligand field parameter (Δoct) within a given family. A way to predict SCO remains elusive.

Abstract
Structural, magnetic and spectroscopic data of four complex salts, [Mn(napsal2323)]NTf2, 1,[Mn(napsal2323)]ClO4, 2, [Mn(napsal2323)]BF4, 3 and [Mn(napsal2323)]NO3, 4, of the [Mn(napsal2323)]+ complex cation indicate that the Mn3+ ion is stabilized in the rare S = 1 spin triplet form in this ligand sphere. Zero-field splitting values of D = +19.6 cm-1 and |E| = 2.02 cm-1 for complex 1 were obtained by High Field Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (HFEPR) measurements conducted over a range of frequencies. Structural and magnetic data also indicate that co-crystallization of complexes 2 and 3 with 0.5 equivalents of ethanol yields the high spin S = 2 forms of the perchlorate and tetrafluoroborate solvates [Mn(napsal2323)]ClO4·0.5(C2H5OH), 2·0.5EtOH and [Mn(napsal2323)]BF4·0.5(C2H5OH), 3·0.5EtOH.

High-temperature Spin Crossover of a Solvent-Free Iron(II) Complex with the Linear Hexadentate Ligand [Fe(L2-3-2Ph)](AsF6)2 (L2-3-2Ph = bis[N-(1-Phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methylidene-2-aminoethyl]-1,3- propanediamine). Abstract
A novel mononuclear iron(II) complex with a linear hexadentate N6 ligand, containing two 1,2,3-triazole moieties, [Fe(L2-3-2Ph)](AsF6)2 (1), was synthesized (L2-3-2Ph = bis[N-(1-Phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methylidene-2-aminoethyl]-1,3-propanediamine). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed a gradual one-step spin crossover (SCO) between the high-spin (HS, S = 2) and low-spin (LS, S = 0) states above room temperature (T1/2 = 468 K). The spin transition was further confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study showed that the complex was in the LS state (S = 0) at room temperature (296 K). In the crystal lattice, a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular network was formed by intermolecular CH⋯ and – interactions of neighboring complex cations [Fe(L2-3-2Ph)]2+. AsF6− ions were located interstitially in the 3D network of complex cations, with no solvent-accessible voids. The crystal structure at 448 K (mixture of HS and LS species) was also successfully determined thanks to the thermal stability of the solvent-free crystal.

Anion Influence on Spin State in Two Novel Fe(III) Compounds: [Fe(5F-sal2333)]X. CRYSTALS 2018. [DOI: 10.3390/cryst9010019] [Citation(s) in RCA: 11] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/16/2022]
Abstract
Structural and magnetic data on two iron (III) complexes with a hexadentate Schiff base chelating ligand and Cl− or BPh4− counterions are reported. In the solid state, the Cl− complex [Fe(5F-sal2333)]Cl, 1, is high spin between 5–300 K while the BPh4− analogue [Fe(5F-sal2333)]BPh4, 2, is low spin between 5–250 K, with onset of a gradual and incomplete spin crossover on warming to room temperature. Structural investigation reveals different orientations of the hydrogen atoms on the secondary amine donors in the two salts of the [Fe(5F-sal2333)]+ cation: high spin complex [Fe(5F-sal2333)]Cl, 1, crystallizes with non-meso orientations while the spin crossover complex [Fe(5F-sal2333)]BPh4, 2, crystallizes with a combination of meso and non-meso orientations disordered over one crystallographic site. Variable temperature electronic absorption spectroscopy of methanolic solutions of 1 and 2 suggests that both are capable of spin state switching in the solution.
