An unprecedented polyoxometalate-based 1D double chain compound with opposite charges enables conductivity improvement

A POM-based one-dimensional (1D) chain compound, {BW₁₂O₄₀[Cu(2,2'-bipy)₂]₂[Cu(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)]}{BW₁₂O₄₀[Cu(2,2'-bipy)₂][Cu(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)₂]}·7H₂O, has been synthesized and structurally characterized, which represents an unprecedented 1D double chain structure with opposite charges. In contrast to common POMs, this compound exhibits a relatively high electrical conductivity of 1.17 × 10^-9 S cm^-1 at 25 °C. In addition, its semiconducting properties have also been investigated by application of photoelectrochemical sensing of H₂O₂.

Exploring the Coordination Modes of a Keggin-Type [ZnW12O40]6- Anionic Cluster: Bonding Patterns, Crystal Structure, and Semiconducting Properties

Polyoxometalate-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds (POIHCs) have been greatly developed due to their wide application prospects, but the pursuit of their directed synthesis via molecular design still remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that the coordination modes of the Keggin-type [ZnW₁₂O₄₀]^6- anion can be tuned, which leads to different semiconductor characteristics. Using the same building block, ligand, and metal ion (ZnW₁₂, phen, Cu²⁺), we synthesized three new POIHCs with different bonding patterns by means of different coordination modes of ZnW₁₂. The three POIHCs (H₂phen){ZnW₁₂O₄₀[Cu(phen)₂]₂}·3H₂O (1), {ZnW₁₂O₄₀[Cu(phen)(H₂O)₂]₂[Cu(phen)(H₂O)]}_n·3H₂O (2), and (Me₄N)₂{ZnW₁₂O₄₀[Cu(phen)(H₂O)]₂}_n·5H₂O (3) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 appears as a zero-dimensional coordination complex cluster, while compounds 2 and 3 are both 1D chain structures with different Cu²⁺ bridge linkages. Although these three POIHCs possess the same chemical components, their semiconductor properties are different, which is demonstrated by measurements of transient photocurrent and band gap (E_g) values. Furthermore, we carried out comparative experiments on the photoconductivity performance of compounds 1-3 and their photocatalytic reduction from O₂ to H₂O₂, indicating the significant influence of the energy level matching on the photocatalytic activity.

Recent advances in solution-processed photodetectors based on inorganic and hybrid photo-active materials

Due to their excellent and tailorable optoelectronic performance, low cost, facile fabrication, and compatibility with flexible substrates, solution-processed inorganic and hybrid photo-active materials have attracted extensive interest for next-generation photodetector applications. This review gives a comprehensive compilation of solution-processed photodetectors. The basic structures of the device and important parameters of photodetectors will be firstly summarized. Then the development of various solution processing technologies containing solution synthesis and liquid phase film-forming processes for the preparation of semiconductor films is described. From the materials science point of view, we give a comprehensive overview about the current status of solution processed semiconductor materials including inorganic and hybrid photo-active materials for the application of photodetectors. Moreover, challenges and future trends in the field of solution-processed photodetectors are proposed.

Perovskite-based photodetectors: materials and devices

While the field of perovskite-based optoelectronics has mostly been dominated by photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, and transistors, semiconducting properties peculiar to perovskites make them interesting candidates for innovative and disruptive applications in light signal detection. Perovskites combine effective light absorption in the broadband range with good photo-generation yield and high charge carrier mobility, a combination that provides promising potential for exploiting sensitive and fast photodetectors that are targeted for image sensing, optical communication, environmental monitoring or chemical/biological detection. Currently, organic-inorganic hybrid and all-inorganic halide perovskites with controlled morphologies of polycrystalline thin films, nano-particles/wires/sheets, and bulk single crystals have shown key figure-of-merit features in terms of their responsivity, detectivity, noise equivalent power, linear dynamic range, and response speed. The sensing region has been covered from ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) to gamma photons based on two- or three-terminal device architectures. Diverse photoactive materials and devices with superior optoelectronic performances have stimulated attention from researchers in multidisciplinary areas. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the recent progress of perovskite-based photodetectors focusing on versatile compositions, structures, and morphologies of constituent materials, and diverse device architectures toward the superior performance metrics. Combining the advantages of both organic semiconductors (facile solution processability) and inorganic semiconductors (high charge carrier mobility), perovskites are expected to replace commercial silicon for future photodetection applications.

Evolutionary Metal Oxide Clusters for Novel Applications: Toward High-Density Data Storage in Nonvolatile Memories

Because of current fabrication limitations, miniaturizing nonvolatile memory devices for managing the explosive increase in big data is challenging. Molecular memories constitute a promising candidate for next-generation memories because their properties can be readily modulated through chemical synthesis. Moreover, these memories can be fabricated through mild solution processing, which can be easily scaled up. Among the various materials, polyoxometalate (POM) molecules have attracted considerable attention for use as novel data-storage nodes for nonvolatile memories. Here, an overview of recent advances in the development of POMs for nonvolatile memories is presented. The general background knowledge of the structure and property diversity of POMs is also summarized. Finally, the challenges and perspectives in the application of POMs in memories are discussed.

Photodetectors Based on Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Lead Halide Perovskites

Recent years have witnessed skyrocketing research achievements in organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskites (OIHPs) in the photovoltaic field. In addition to photovoltaics, more and more studies have focused on OIHPs-based photodetectors in the past two years, due to the remarkable optoelectronic properties of OIHPs. This article summarizes the latest progress in this research field. To begin with, the factors influencing the performance of photodetectors are discussed, including both internal and external factors. In particular, the channel width and the incident power intensities should be taken into account to precisely and objectively evaluate and compare the output performance of different photodetectors. Next, photodetectors fabricated on single-component perovskites in terms of different micromorphologies are discussed, namely, 3D thin-film and single crystalline, 2D nanoplates, 1D nanowires, and 0D nanocrystals, respectively. Then, bilayer structured perovskite-based photodetectors incorporating inorganic and organic semiconductors are discussed to improve the optoelectronic performance of their pristine counterparts. Additionally, flexible OIHPs-based photodetectors are highlighted. Finally, a brief conclusion and outlook is given on the progress and challenges in the field of perovskites-based photodetectors.

SiW12 -TiO2 Mesoporous Layer for Enhanced Electron-Extraction Efficiency and Conductivity in Perovskite Solar Cells

High quality electron-transport layer (ETL) with superior optical and electrical properties is an essential part in high efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, SiW₁₂ -TiO₂ mesoporous film is prepared by a facile one-step spin-coating deposition method and successfully applied as ETL in PSCs. Compared with pristine TiO₂ -based PSC, the SiW₁₂ -TiO₂ -based one shows a remarkable enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 12.00 to 14.66 %, which is owed to the higher conductivity, electron-extraction efficiency, and well-matched energy level alignment of SiW₁₂ -TiO₂ film. Moreover, the SiW₁₂ -TiO₂ -based device also shows a good long-time stability in under ambient conditions. This work demonstrates that using polyoxometalates (POMs) to modify the metal-oxide semiconductors is an effective approach for further enhancing the performance of PSCs.

Keggin-Type PMo11V as a P-type Dopant for Enhancing the Efficiency and Reproducibility of Perovskite Solar Cells

The conventional perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-dimethoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) as a hole transporting material commonly suffer from poor stability and reproducibility mainly due to the process of placing the devices in air and illumination for oxidizing the spiro-OMeTAD. Herein, Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs)-phosphovanadomolybdate (H₄PMo₁₁V·nH₂O, denoted as PMo₁₁V) is for the first time employed as a p-type dopant for promoting the oxidation of spiro-OMeTAD. Thereby, without illumination and air, the conductivity and hole extraction efficiency of the PMo₁₁V doped spiro-OMeTAD with assistance of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Li-TFSI) and 4-tert-butylpyridine (TBP) can be dramatically enhanced. On the basis of this strategy, the corresponding PSCs exhibit substantially improved photovoltaic performance and good reproducibility. The best performing device yields a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.05%. This work indicates a great potential of polyoxometalates for further applications in solar cells and other optoelectronics devices.
