Ionothermal Crystallization of SAPO-11 Using Novel Pyridinium Ionic Liquid and Its Catalytic Activity in Esterification of Levulinic Acid into Ethyl Levulinate

A study using a novel pyridinium ionic liquid, namely 1-propylpyridinium bromide ([PPy]Br), to crystallize SAPO-11 under ionothermal conditions is reported. By carefully following the crystallization process, SAPO-11 can readily be crystallized in the presence of [PPy]Br, which serves as a synthesis solvent and structure-directing agent, at 150 °C after 133 h of heating. The study also focuses on manipulating other synthesis parameters (e.g., crystallization temperature, phosphorous content, silicon amount and [PPy]Br concentration) and investigating their respective effects on the formation of SAPO-11. The crystallized SAPO-11 has an acidic nature and a high surface area. Under conductive instant heating conditions, the SAPO-11 catalyst is very active in the conversion of levulinic acid into ethyl levulinate; 93.4% conversion and 100% selectivity of ethyl levulinate are recorded at 180 °C after 30 min of reaction. This result is comparable to or even better than those of conventional homogeneous catalysts.

CuAPO-5 as a Multiphase Catalyst for Synthesis of Verbenone from α-Pinene

Copper(II)-containing aluminum phosphate material (CuAPO-5) was synthesized hydrothermally and used as a multiphase catalyst for the oxidation of α-pinene to verbenone. The catalysts were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area techniques, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ammonia temperature programmed reduction (NH₃-TPD). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy spectrometry (EDS), inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) were performed to characterize the material. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, n(α-pinene)/n(TBHP), and solvent on the catalytic performance of CuAPO-5 were investigated. The results show that all the prepared catalysts have AFI topology and a large specific surface area. Copper is evenly distributed in the skeleton in a bivalent form. The introduction of copper increases the acid content of the catalyst. Under the optimized reaction conditions, 96.8% conversion of α-pinene and 46.4% selectivity to verbenone were achieved by CuAPO-5(0.06) molecular sieve within a reaction time of 12 h. CuAPO-5(0.06) can be recycled for five cycles without losing the conversion of α-pinene and the selectivity to verbenone.

Synthesis of FeAPO-34 Molecular Sieve under Ionothermal Condition

FeAPO-34 with a chabazite (CHA) topology structure was successfully synthesized under ionothermal conditions using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoliumchloride (EMIMCl) ionic liquid in the presence of ethylenediamine (EDA). The material was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analyses, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Incorporation of iron within the covalent framework of the material was confirmed by the presence of broad signals between 1000 and 14,000 ppm in the ³¹P NMR spectrum, corresponding to the P(OFe)_x(OAl)_4-x species.

Hydrotreatment Followed by Oxidative Desulfurization and Denitrogenation to Attain Low Sulphur and Nitrogen Bitumen Derived Gas Oils

To lower the sulphur content below 500 ppm and to increase the quality of bitumen derived heavy oil, a combination of hydrotreating followed by oxidative desulfurization (ODS) and oxidative denitrogenation (ODN) is proposed in this work. NiMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was synthesized and used to hydrotreat heavy gas oil (HGO) and light gas oil (LGO) at typical operating conditions of 370–390 °C, 9 MPa, 1–1.5 h−1 space velocity and 600:1 H2 to oil ratio. γ-Alumina and alumina-titania supported Mo, P, Mn and W catalysts were synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffractions, N2 adsorption-desorption using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). All catalysts were tested for the oxidation of sulphur and nitrogen aromatic compounds present in LGO and HGO using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as oxidant. The oxidized sulphur and nitrogen compounds were extracted using adsorption on activated carbon and liquid-liquid extraction using methanol. The determination of oxidation states of each metal using XPS confirmed the structure of metal oxides in the catalyst. Thus, the catalytic activity determined in terms of sulphur and nitrogen removal is related to their physico-chemical properties. In agreement with literature, a simplistic mechanism for the oxidative desulfurization is also presented. Mo was found to be more active in comparison to W. Presence of Ti in the support has shown 8–12% increase in ODS and ODN. The MnPMo/γ-Al2O3-TiO2 catalyst showed the best activity for sulphur and nitrogen removal. The role of Mn and P as promoters to molybdenum was also discussed. Further three-stage ODS and ODN was performed to achieve less than 500 ppm in HGO and LGO. The combination of hydrotreatment, ODS and ODN has resulted in removal of 98.8 wt.% sulphur and 94.7 wt.% nitrogen from HGO and removal of 98.5 wt.% sulphur and 97.8 wt.% nitrogen from LGO.
