High-throughput approach for the identification of anilinium-based ionic liquids that are suitable for electropolymerisation

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, Hirshfeld Surface, and Physicochemical Characterization of New Salt Bis(2-ethyl-6-methylanilinium)tetrachloromercurate (II) [C9H14N]2HgCl4

In this paper, a new organic salt bis(2-ethyl-6-methylanilinium)tetrachloromercurate (II)) has been synthesized, characterized, and studied theoretically using DFT. The synthesized compound was found to crystallize in the monoclinic system with space group P21/c with the following unit cell parameters a = 23.1696(2), b = 25.7951 (6), c = 7.5980 (4) Å, β = 96.5790 (11)°, and Z = 8. Its atomic arrangement can be described asmutually alternating organic and inorganic entities in the (ab) plane. The cohesion is achieved through N-H…Cl hydrogen bonds and π…π stacking interacting neighboring aromatic cations. The PXRD was carried out. The intermolecular interactions in the crystal packing were investigated using Hirshfeld surface analysis. Its associated 2D fingerprint plots revealed their contribution quantitatively. High-resolution images of the surface were obtained by the SEM technique, and the EDX spectrum assured the existence of all nonhydrogen atoms. The infrared spectrum was used to gain more information about vibrational modes. Analysis of thermal differential and gravimetric (TGA/DTA) shows two-phase transitions observed at 362 and 394 K. AC conductivity measurements were performed to confirm these two-phase transitions.

The effect of alkyl chain and electronegative atoms in anion on biological activity of anilinium carboxylate bioactive ionic liquids and computational approaches by DFT functional and molecular docking

The Brønsted acid-base neutralization was executed for synthesis of the anilinium carboxylate ionic liquids (ACILs), and obtained highly viscous liquids with yields about (90-94)%. These ILs were purified by distillation process and used vacuum oven, as well as characterized by FT-IR, UV spectroscopy and 1H-NMR. To evaluate the antimicrobial activity, the well diffusion method was used against eight human pathogenic bacteria, showing inhibition of zone at 13 mm-27 mm, and three fungi with result about 60%. Plus, the DFT functional from material studio 8.0 was used for evaluation of computational screening for estimating the chemical reactivity, HOMO, LUMO and HOMO-LUMO gap, recorded from -7.252 to -8.20 kcal/mol. The IL05 has showed about -6.5 kcal/mol docking score as standard inhibitor, as and higher than starting. Form AMDET properties, it has revealed that they have low toxicity, higher absorption through the biological system and non-carcinogenic. Finally, the electronegative groups, such as F, Cl and Br atoms in anion can show the higher antimicrobial activity and molecular docking score among all others while F atom containing IL05 shows the highest docking score and antimicrobial activity. However, it is concluded that rather than long large alkyl chain of anion, F atom (the highest electronegative atom) containing anion is better for biologically significance ILs.

Trialkylammonium salt degradation: implications for methylation and cross-coupling

Trialkylammonium (most notably N,N,N-trimethylanilinium) salts are known to display dual reactivity through both the aryl group and the N-methyl groups. These salts have thus been widely applied in cross-coupling, aryl etherification, fluorine radiolabelling, phase-transfer catalysis, supramolecular recognition, polymer design, and (more recently) methylation. However, their application as electrophilic methylating reagents remains somewhat underexplored, and an understanding of their arylation versus methylation reactivities is lacking. This study presents a mechanistic degradation analysis of N,N,N-trimethylanilinium salts and highlights the implications for synthetic applications of this important class of salts. Kinetic degradation studies, in both solid and solution phases, have delivered insights into the physical and chemical parameters affecting anilinium salt stability. ¹H NMR kinetic analysis of salt degradation has evidenced thermal degradation to methyl iodide and the parent aniline, consistent with a closed-shell S_N2-centred degradative pathway, and methyl iodide being the key reactive species in applied methylation procedures. Furthermore, the effect of halide and non-nucleophilic counterions on salt degradation has been investigated, along with deuterium isotope and solvent effects. New mechanistic insights have enabled the investigation of the use of trimethylanilinium salts in O-methylation and in improved cross-coupling strategies. Finally, detailed computational studies have helped highlight limitations in the current state-of-the-art of solvation modelling of reaction in which the bulk medium undergoes experimentally observable changes over the reaction timecourse.

The dual reactivity of N,N,N-trimethylanilinium salts towards arylation and methylation is decoupled in this mechanistic investigation to enable more strategic application of these salts in either reaction class.

Cleaning Matters!

Translation of a manual process to high throughput for research and development requires special consideration. One important and often unreported aspect is the establishment of an efficient cleaning routine. This becomes significant, as precious time and, in particular, material would be lost, that is, when low-quality high-throughput experimentation is involved. We present a fully automated cleaning routine of the challenging synthesis of cadmium selenide quantum dots. Manual, semiautomated, and fully automated cleaning protocols were executed and compared in terms of spectral similarities of the synthesized colloids. Only the fully automated protocol enabled true 24/7 operation.

High throughput approach to investigating ternary solvents of aqueous non-stoichiometric protic ionic liquids

The use of ionic liquids (ILs) is limited for many applications due to their cost and/or viscosity. An efficient solution is to make mixtures of ILs with molecular solvents. However, it is well known that there are a large number of possible cation and anion combinations resulting in ILs, and this becomes a vast number when these are then combined with a molecular solvent. Therefore, we need structure-property relationships to design new IL-molecular solvent systems. In this work we have applied high throughput methods to investigate IL containing solutions to provide systematic data of a broad compositional space. We have principally focused on the surface tension, apparent pH and liquid nanostructure to identify potential self-assembly and protein stabilizing ability of solvent systems. Non-stoichiometric and aqueous IL-solvents were prepared in a high-throughput manner based on a deliberate experimental design approach such that 26 samples were prepared for each cation-anion-water combination. A selection of 8 protic ionic liquids (PILs) were used as starting materials, comprising ethanol-, ethyl-, butyl-, and pentylammonium cations combined with formate, acetate and nitrate anions. This resulted in a total of 208 different solvent systems. The measured solvent properties showed different trends in base-rich and acid-rich solvent combinations. Surface tensions of base-rich samples exhibited a relatively linear relationship with increasing excess amine, while acid-rich samples were more dominantly affected by the change in water content. Liquid nanostructure of acid-rich samples was retained upon water dilution, whereas a significant SAXS peak shift towards lower scattering angles was observed in the presence of excess amines, indicating larger nanosized aggregates were forming. The design of experiment approach used here is considered to be applicable to any multi-component solvent compositional space due to its suitability in using small data sets to cover large compositional spaces, and hence can be employed to decrease the time and sample quantities required.

Electropolymerisation of N-Ethylanilinium Trifluoroacetate Ionic Liquid into Poly(N-Ethylaniline) and Control of its Morphology

In this paper, the electropolymerisation of pre-synthesised N-ethylanilinium trifluoroacetate, a protic ionic liquid (PIL), was carried out. The PIL served as the monomer precursor, solvent, and supporting electrolyte for the polymerisation process, and no additional acid was required due to the protic nature of the PIL. Two different morphologies of the poly(N-ethylaniline) were achieved by using different electropolymerisation approaches and the resultant films were soluble in the PIL precursor as well as a wide range of organic solvents. The use of anilinium based PILs, as polymerisation precursors, promises a greener approach for the production of polyanilines, as well as highly processable polymers.

Electrochemical Tailoring of Fibrous Polyaniline and Electroless Decoration with Gold and Platinum Nanoparticles

Presented in this work is a facile and quick electrochemical method for controlling the morphology of thick polyaniline (PANi) films, without the use of templates. By stepping the polymerization potential from high voltages to a lower (or series of lower) voltage(s), we successfully controlled the morphology of the polymer, and fibrous structures, unique to each potential step, were achieved. In addition, the resultant film was tested electrochemically for its viability as an electrode material for flexible batteries and supercapacitors. Furthermore, the PANi film was decorated with gold and platinum nanoparticles via an electroless deposition process for possible electrocatalytic applications, whereby the oxidation of hydrazine at the composite was investigated.
