Fluorescent detection mechanism of CO-releasing molecule-3: Competition of inter-/intra-molecular hydrogen bonds

The fluorescent detection mechanism of 2-(4-nitro-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl) acetic acid (CORM3-green) on CO-Releasing Molecule-3 (CORM-3) is theoretically studied. Upon reaction with CORM-3, the non-fluorescent CORM3-green is transferred to the keto form of 2-(4-amino-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)acetic acid (PTI) to produce strong fluorescence peak located at 423 nm. This peak red-shifts to 489 nm, which is induced by the strengthening of intermolecular hydrogen bond (HB) between PTI and water molecules and attributed to the experimentally observed fluorescence emission at 503 nm. This result is dramatically different from previous reports that the experimental fluorescence corresponds to the proton transferred enol form of PTI. To illustrate this confusion, the calculated fluorescence peak of PTI-Enol is located at 689 nm, which is much larger than that of experimental result. This result excludes the occurrence of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). It is concluded that intermolecular HBs hinders the formation of intramolecular HB and the ESIPT of the keto form of PTI. This conclusion confirms that experimental Stokes shift of 113 nm is mainly caused by the intermolecular hydrogen bonding rather than by ESIPT process. This work proposes a reasonable explanation for the detection mechanism of CORM3-green and experimental fluorescence phenomenon.

The effects of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups on the photophysical properties and ESIPT of salicylideneaniline

The photophysical properties and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of salicylideneaniline (1a) and its derivatives (1b-1e) with different substituents have been investigated using the DFT and TD-DFT methods. The calculated results indicate that the introduction of electron-withdrawing group CN weakens the intramolecular hydrogen bond (H···N). However, the introduction of electron-donating group N(CH₃)₂ strengthens it. When the CN and N(CH₃)₂ groups are introduced simultaneously, the intramolecular hydrogen bond (H···N) is weakened. In addition, swapping the CN and N(CH₃)₂ group positions can enhance the intramolecular hydrogen bond (H···N). Compared to 1a, the absorption and emission spectra of compounds 1b-1e are red-shifted. Frontier molecular orbital analyses prove that the more intense intramolecular charge transfer characters caused by CN and N(CH₃)₂ substituents is responsible for the red shift of spectra. Potential energy curves indicate that ESIPT in salicylideneaniline (1a) and the CN substituted derivative (1b) is a non-barrier process, while in the N(CH₃)₂ substituted derivative (1c) and the CN and N(CH₃)₂ co-substituted derivative (1d), ESIPT needs to overcome the energy barriers of 2.32 kcal/mol and 3.38 kcal/mol, respectively. Exchanging the positions of CN and N(CH₃)₂ groups (1e) makes the ESIPT into a barrier-free process. Therefore, the substitution and position of CN and N(CH₃)₂ groups can affect the ESIPT process and induce different photophysical properties.

A comprehensive infrared spectroscopic and theoretical study on phenol-ethyldimethylsilane dihydrogen-bonded clusters in the S0 and S1 states

To investigate microscopic characters of Si-H⋯H-O type dihydrogen bonds, we observed OH and SiH stretch bands in both the S₀ and S₁ states of phenol-ethyldimethylsilane (PhOH-EDMS) clusters by infrared (IR)-ultraviolet (UV) and UV-IR double resonance spectroscopies. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and energy decomposition analysis were also performed. Structures of two isomers identified were unambiguously determined through the analysis of IR spectra and DFT calculations. To discuss the strength of dihydrogen bond in various systems, we performed theoretical calculations on clusters of EDMS with several acidic molecules in addition to PhOH. It was revealed that charge-transfer interaction energies from a bonding σ orbital of SiH bond to an anti-bonding σ^* orbital of OH bond well reflect strengths of dihydrogen bonds. Additionally, it was found that the red shift of SiH stretch frequencies can be used as a crude measure of the strength of dihydrogen bonds. Relationship between the red shifts of OH/SiH stretch frequencies and various electrostatic components of the interaction energy was examined. In the S₁ state, large increases in red shifts were observed for both the OH and SiH stretch frequencies. Since the EDMS moiety is not associated with the electronic excitation in a cluster, the strength of dihydrogen bonds in the S₁ and S₀ states was able to be directly compared based on the red shifts of the SiH stretch bands. A significant increase in the red shift of SiH stretch frequency indicates a strengthening of the dihydrogen bonds during the electronic excitation of the PhOH moiety.

TDDFT study on the photophysical properties of coumarinyl chalcones and sensing mechanism of a derived fluorescent probe for hydrogen sulfide

Coumarin-chalcone hybrids have attracted much attention in recent years due to their important optical properties. Herein, the photophysical properties of a series of coumarinyl chalcones and the sensing mechanism for H₂S of a related fluorescent probe CC-DNP were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods. The predicted spectral properties agree well with the experimental results, which allowed an assignment of the spectra. Our calculations successfully clarified the experimental observed fluorescence "off-on" effect and the fluorescent quenching mechanism of the probe. The results revealed that the first excited state (S₁) of the probe CC-DNP is a dark state with obvious charge transfer from coumarin unit to 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP) moiety, which results in the fluorescence quenching via the nonradiative photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process. On the other hand, the excited state S₁ in the thiolysis product CC-OH decayed directly to S₀, and thus the fluorescence is recovered.

Molecular engineering mechanism of organic photoactive layer by alkyl chains, 4-butoxyphenyl and cyanogroup

The three organic dye molecules (JY31, JY32 and JY33) were applied to the photoactive layer in solar cells. Photophysical and photochemical characteristic have been investigated with natural bond orbital (NBO), frontier molecular orbital, ionization potentials, electron affinities, absorption properties, reorganization energies, static first hyperpolarizability, emission characteristics, IR spectra, charge density difference; the influence of alkyl chains and 4-butoxyphenyl on properties were revealed; Subsequently, three new molecules JY33-1, JY33-2 and JY33-3 were designed by inserting the electron withdrawing group -CN into the acceptor part of JY33 in order to understand molecular engineering mechanism. The results show that the three original molecules have relatively high molar extinction coefficients, and the molecule of JY33 with a 4-butoxyphenyl group enables a bathochromic shift in absorption spectrum and is beneficial to improve the hole transport, injection capacity and ICT properties as well as better energy levels matching. The current study provides an effective channel for manipulating performance in materials design of solar cells.

Asymmetric substitution changes the UV-induced nonradiative decay pathway and the spectra behaviors of β-diketones

Asymmetric substitution has not been termed as an essential factor in studying photo-induced ultrafast dynamics of molecular system. Asymmetric 4-hydroxybut-3-en-2-one (HEO), together with symmetric malonaldehyde (MA) and acetylacetone (AA), have been provided as target sample to study the nonradiative decay (ND) processes of β-diketones. An effective ND pathway of the three molecules is presented that their excited second (S₂) states transfer to first (S₁) state by nonadiabatic surface hopping, and then transfer to triplet (T₁) state by crossing minimum energy crossing point (MECP), after which decay to ground (S₀) state through MECP. More importantly, the asymmetric substitution of HEO induces the proton transfer in the S₁ state and generates a proton-transferred conformer with lowest energy, which does not occur for MA and AA. This change exploits a new ND pathway that the S₁ state decays to the proton transferred T₁ state and then undergoes reverse proton transfer to S₀ state through the MECPs between the three states. The two pathways of HEO give detailed energy and geometric information on surface hopping of S₂/S₁ and MECPs of S₁/T₁/S₀, and interpret the reason of the ND pathway while not spectra emission. This result is significantly different from the previous reported ND pathway of photoisomerization or conical intersection between different states. This work shows that asymmetric substitution changes the molecular structure and then changes their spectra behaviors.

Unveiling the mechanism of the promising two-dimensional photoswitch - Hemithioindigo

The control of internal molecular motions by outside stimuli is a decisive task in the construction of functional molecules and molecular machines. Light-induced intramolecular rotations of photoswitches have attracted increasing research interests because of the high stability and high reversibility of photoswitches. Recently, Henry et al. reported an unprecedented two-dimensional controlled photoswitch, the hemithioindigo (HTI) derivative Z1, whose single bond rotation in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) solvent and double bond rotation in cyclohexane solvent can be induced by visible light (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2016, 138, 12,219). Here we investigate the intramolecular rotations of the HTI and Z1 in different polar solvents by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and Nonadiabatic dynamic simulations. Due to the steric hindrance between methyl and thioindigo fragment, the rotations of Z1 in the excited state are obstructed. Interestingly, the HTI exhibits two distinct rotation paths in DMSO and cyclohexane solvents at about 50fs. The intermolecular hydrogen bonds between HTI and DMSO play an important role in the rotation of HTI in DMSO solvent. Therefore, the HTI is a more promising two-dimensional photoswitch compared with the Z1. Our finding is thus of fundamental importance to understand the mechanisms of this class of photoswitches and design complex molecular behavior.

Intramolecular hydrogen bonding promoted excited state double proton transfer mechanism based on a typical molecule: Porphycene

The double excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanisms of porphycene, were theoretically studied. The primary bond lengths, IR vibrational spectra and hydrogen-bond energy indicate that the intramolecular hydrogen bonds were strengthened in the first excited state, which facilitate the ESIPT processes. To elucidate the proposed mechanism, the potential-energy surfaces of the ground state and first excited state were constructed as functions of NH bond lengths and its relative torsional angle rotation. The intramolecular proton transfer of prophycene is more likely to occur through lengthwise pathway and proceed in the concerted coordinated transfer manner.

Photoexcitation effect on the adsorption of hazardous gases on silica surface

There is very little scientific understanding of photoexcitation effect on the adsorption properties of adsorbent. The adsorption of four hazardous gases (SARIN (propan-2-ylmethylphospho-nofluoridate), methyl dichlorophosphate (MDCP), trimethyl phosphate (TMP) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)) on silica surface is taken as target sample in this work. The adsorption energy order (MDCP<SARIN<TMP) in the ground state is consistent with the strength order of intermolecular hydrogen bond (inter-HB) between hydroxyl group of silica surface and hazardous gas, and the desorption order of the three gases in previous reports. However, with the adsorption energy increase of MDCP and the decrease of SARIN and TMP, this order changes remarkably to SARIN<TMP<MDCP after photoexcitation to excited state by absorbing shortwave ultraviolet irradiation. This change is opposite to the inter-HB weakening of MDCP in the first excited (S₁) state and the strengthening of TMP and SARIN in the second excited (S₂) state. This opposite change is caused by formation of intermolecular charge transfer state of MDCP and local excitation of SARIN and TMP. The H₂S is dissociated after photoexcitation to the S₁ state. This work presents photoexcitation as a new standard for the design and detection of adsorption properties of adsorbent for its striking effect on adsorption behaviors.

Hydrogen bond strengthening induces fluorescence quenching of PRODAN derivative by turning on twisted intramolecular charge transfer

Researchers have proposed different effective mechanisms of hydrogen bonding (HB) on the fluorescence of 6-propionyl-2-dimethylaminonaphthalene (PRODAN) and its derivatives. Herein, excited state transition and dynamics analysis confirm that the fluorescence of PD (a derivative of PRODAN with ethyl replaced by 3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropan) emits from the planar intramolecular charge transfer (PICT) state rather than twist ICT (TICT) state, because the fluorescence emission and surface hopping from the TICT state to the twist ground (T-S₀) state is energy forbidden. Nevertheless, the strengthening of intramolecular-HB (intra-HB) and intermolecular-HB (inter-HB) of PD-(methanol)₂ smooth the pathway of surface hopping from TICT to T-S₀ state and the external conversion going to planar ground state by decreasing the energy difference of the two states. This smoothing changes the fluorescence state of PD-(methanol)₂ to the TICT state in which fluorescence emission does not occur but surface hopping, leading to the partial fluorescence quenching of PD in methanol solvent. This conclusion is different from previous related reports. Moreover, the inter-HB strengthening of PD-methanol in PICT state induces the cleavage of intra-HB and a fluorescence red-shift of 54nm compared to PD. This red-shift increases to 66nm for PD-(methanol)₂ for the strengthening of the one intra-HB and two inter-HBs. The dipole moments of PD-methanol and PD-(methanol)₂ respectively increase about 10.3D and 8.1D in PICT state compared to PD. The synergistic effect of intra-HB and inter-HB induces partial quenching of PD in methanol solvent by turning on the TICT state and fluorescence red-shift. This work gives a reasonable description on the fluorescence red-shift and partial quenching of PD in methanol solvent, which will bring insight into the study of spectroscopic properties of molecules owning better spectral characteristics.

An experimental and theoretical study of solvent hydrogen-bond-donating capacity effects on ultrafast intramolecular charge transfer of LD 490

The excited-state intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of LD 490 were investigated in different hydrogen-bond-donating solvents (α scale) on the basis of the Kamlet-Taft solvatochromic parameters (π*, α, β). The femtosecond transient absorption spectra and the kinetics decay rate reveal that with an increase of solvent's α capacity, the long-lived picosecond process, which is attributed to the ICT, becomes much faster. Combining with time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations, we demonstrate that the enhancement of α acidity substantially increases the electronegativity of the carbonyl oxygen in LD 490, which strengthen excited-state intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions and consequently facilitate the ICT process.

A mechanistic study on Decontamination of Methyl Orange Dyes from Aqueous Phase by Mesoporous Pulp Waste and Polyaniline

The dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D3) is used to investigate the mechanism of mesoporous pulp waste (MPW) and polyaniline (PANI) adsorptive removal methyl orange (MO) dye from their aqueous solutions. The results are absolutely reliable because of the sufficiently accurate method although such big systems are studied. It is demonstrated that hydrogen bond and Van Der Waals interactions play a significant role in MO adsorption by MPW and PANI. For MO adsorption by MPW, hydrogen bond and Van Der Waals interactions are both weakened in S₁ state. In contrast, hydrogen bond and Van Der Waals interactions between PANI and MO are both enhanced in S₁ state. The thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy and free energy change reveal that the MO adsorption by MPW and PANI are spontaneous and exothermic. The adsorption of MO on MPW is less favorable in S₁ state and the adsorption of MO on PANI is more favorable in S₁ state. Therefore, the photoexcitation should be controlled during the MO adsorption by MPW and applied for MO adsorption by PANI.

Hydrogen and Dihydrogen Bonds in the Reactions of Metal Hydrides

The dihydrogen bond-an interaction between a transition-metal or main-group hydride (M-H) and a protic hydrogen moiety (H-X)-is arguably the most intriguing type of hydrogen bond. It was discovered in the mid-1990s and has been intensively explored since then. Herein, we collate up-to-date experimental and computational studies of the structural, energetic, and spectroscopic parameters and natures of dihydrogen-bonded complexes of the form M-H···H-X, as such species are now known for a wide variety of hydrido compounds. Being a weak interaction, dihydrogen bonding entails the lengthening of the participating bonds as well as their polarization (repolarization) as a result of electron density redistribution. Thus, the formation of a dihydrogen bond allows for the activation of both the MH and XH bonds in one step, facilitating proton transfer and preparing these bonds for further transformations. The implications of dihydrogen bonding in different stoichiometric and catalytic reactions, such as hydrogen exchange, alcoholysis and aminolysis, hydrogen evolution, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation, are discussed.

Detailed theoretical investigation on ESIPT process of pigment yellow 101

The ESIPT scheme amongenol–enol,enol–ketoandketo–keto: The equilibrium ESIPT process exists in the S₁state. And following with the radiative transition, the reversed GSIPT can also occur in the S₀state.
