Abstract
Developing efficient photocatalysts that perform multi electron redox reactions is critical to achieving solar energy conversion. One can reach this goal by developing systems which mimic natural photosynthesis and exploit strategies such as proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) to achieve photochemical charge accumulation. We report herein a heteroleptic Cu(i)bis(phenanthroline) complex, Cu-AnQ, featuring a fused phenazine-anthraquinone moiety that photochemically accumulates two electrons in the anthraquinone unit via PCET. Full spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses allowed us to identify the reduced species and revealed that up to three electrons can be accumulated in the phenazine-anthraquinone ring system under electrochemical conditions. Continuous photolysis of Cu-AnQ in the presence of sacrificial electron donor produced doubly reduced monoprotonated photoproduct confirmed unambiguously by X-ray crystallography. Formation of this photoproduct indicates that a PCET process occurred during illumination and two electrons were accumulated in the system. The role of the heteroleptic Cu(i)bis(phenanthroline) moiety participating in the photochemical charge accumulation as a light absorber was evidenced by comparing the photolysis of Cu-AnQ and the free AnQ ligand with less reductive triethylamine as a sacrificial electron donor, in which photogenerated doubly reduced species was observed with Cu-AnQ, but not with the free ligand. The thermodynamic properties of Cu-AnQ were examined by DFT which mapped the probable reaction pathway for photochemical charge accumulation and the capacity for solar energy stored in the process. This study presents a unique system built on earth-abundant transition metal complex to store electrons, and tune the storage of solar energy by the degree of protonation of the electron acceptor.

Abstract
The ability to convert between molecular spin states is of utmost importance in materials chemistry. Förster-type energy transfer is based on dipole-dipole interactions and can therefore theoretically be used to convert between molecular spin states. Here, a molecular dyad that is capable of transferring energy from an excited triplet state to an excited singlet state is presented. The rate of conversion between these states was shown to be 36 times faster than the rate of emission from the isolated triplet state. This dyad provides the first solid proof that Förster-type triplet-to-singlet energy transfer is possible, revealing a method to increase the rate of light extraction from excited triplet states.

Abstract
Mononuclear nonheme manganese(IV)-oxo complexes binding calcium ion and other redox-inactive metal ions, [(dpaq)MnIV(O)]+-M n+ (1-Mn+, M n+ = Ca2+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Lu3+, Y3+, Al3+, and Sc3+) (dpaq = 2-[bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)]amino- N-quinolin-8-yl-acetamidate), were synthesized by reacting a hydroxomanganese(III) complex, [(dpaq)MnIII(OH)]+, with iodosylbenzene (PhIO) in the presence of redox-inactive metal ions (M n+). The Mn(IV)-oxo complexes were characterized using various spectroscopic techniques. In reactivity studies, we observed contrasting effects of M n+ on the reactivity of 1-M n+ in redox reactions such as electron-transfer (ET), oxygen atom transfer (OAT), and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions. In the OAT and ET reactions, the reactivity order of 1-M n+, such as 1-Sc3+ ≈ 1-Al3+ > 1-Y3+ > 1-Lu3+ > 1-Zn2+ > 1-Mg2+ > 1-Ca2+, follows the Lewis acidity of M n+ bound to the Mn-O moiety; that is, the stronger the Lewis acidity of M n+, the higher the reactivity of 1-M n+ becomes. In sharp contrast, the reactivity of 1-M n+ in the HAT reaction was reversed, giving the reactivity order 1-Ca2+ > 1-Mg2+ > 1-Zn2+ > 1-Lu3+> 1-Y3+> 1-Al3+ ≈ 1-Sc3+; that is, the higher is Lewis acidity of M n+, the lower the reactivity of 1-M n+ in the HAT reaction. The latter result implies that the Lewis acidity of M n+ bound to the Mn-O moiety can modulate the basicity of the metal-oxo moiety, thus influencing the HAT reactivity of 1-M n+; cytochrome P450 utilizes the axial thiolate ligand to increase the basicity of the iron-oxo moiety, which enhances the reactivity of compound I in C-H bond activation reactions.

Abstract
Biomimetic models that contain elements of photosynthesis are fundamental in the development of synthetic systems that can use sunlight to produce fuel. The critical task consists of running several rounds of light-induced charge separation, which is required to accumulate enough redox equivalents at the catalytic sites for the target chemistry to occur. Long-lived first charge-separated state and distinct electronic signatures for the sequential charge accumulated species are essential features to be able to track these events on a spectroscopic ground. Herein, we use a double-excitation nanosecond pump-pump-probe experiment to interrogate two successive rounds of photo-induced electron transfer on a molecular dyad containing a naphthalene diimide (NDI) linked to a [Ru(bpy)3 ]2+ (bpy=bipyridine) chromophore by using a reversible electron donor. We report an unprecedented long-lived two-electron charge accumulation (t=200 μs).

Abstract
The photochemistry of a molecular pentad composed of a central anthraquinone (AQ) acceptor flanked by two Ru(bpy)32+ photosensitizers and two peripheral triarylamine (TAA) donors was investigated by transient IR and UV-vis spectroscopies in the presence of 0.2 M p-toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH) in deaerated acetonitrile. In ∼15% of all excited pentad molecules, AQ is converted to its hydroquinone form (AQH2) via reversible intramolecular electron transfer from the two TAA units (τ = 65 ps), followed by intermolecular proton transfer from TsOH (τ ≈ 3 ns for the first step). Although the light-driven accumulation of reduction equivalents occurs through a sequence of electron and proton transfer steps, the resulting photoproduct decays via concerted PCET (τ = 4.7 μs) with an H/D kinetic isotope effect of 1.4 ± 0.2. Moreover, the reoxidation of AQH2 seems to take place via a double electron transfer step involving both TAA+ units rather than sequential single electron transfer events. Thus, the overall charge-recombination reaction seems to involve a concerted proton-coupled two-electron oxidation of AQH2. The comparison of experimental data obtained in neat acetonitrile with data from acidic solutions suggests that the inverted driving-force effect can play a crucial role for obtaining long-lived photoproducts resulting from multiphoton, multielectron processes. Our pentad provides the first example of light-driven accumulation of reduction equivalents stabilized by PCET in artificial molecular systems without sacrificial reagents. Our study provides fundamental insight into how light-driven multielectron redox chemistry, for example the reduction of CO2 or the oxidation of H2O, can potentially be performed without sacrificial reagents.

Abstract
Accumulation and temporary storage of redox equivalents with visible light as an energy input is of pivotal importance for artificial photosynthesis because key reactions, such as CO2 reduction or water oxidation, require the transfer of multiple redox equivalents. We report on the first purely molecular system, in which a long-lived charge-separated state (τ≈870 ns) with two electrons accumulated on a suitable acceptor unit can be observed after excitation with visible light. Importantly, no sacrificial reagents were employed.
