The high power conversion efficiency of a two-dimensional GeSe/AsP van der Waals heterostructure for solar energy cells

Constructing a van der Waals heterostructure is a practical way to promote the conversion efficiency of solar energy. Here, we demonstrate the efficient performance of a GeSe/AsP heterostructure in solar energy cells based on the first-principles calculations. The electronic properties, optical absorption, and optoelectronic properties are calculated to evaluate the efficiency of the newly designed heterostructure. The results indicate that the GeSe/AsP heterostructure possesses a type-II band alignment with an indirect bandgap of 1.10 eV, which greatly promotes the effective separation of photogenerated carriers. Besides, an intrinsic electric field is formed in the direction from the AsP to GeSe monolayer, which is beneficial to prevent the recombination of the photogenerated electron-hole pair. Simultaneously, a strong optical absorption is observed in the visible light range. The predicted power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the GeSe/AsP heterostructure is 16.0% and can be promoted to 17.3% by applying 1% biaxial compression strain. The present results indicate that the GeSe/AsP heterostructure is a promising candidate material for high-performance solar cells.

Recent Progress on Fullerene-Based Materials: Synthesis, Properties, Modifications, and Photocatalytic Applications

Solar light is an inexpensive energy source making up for energy shortage and solving serious environmental problems. For efficient utilization of solar energy, photocatalytic materials have attracted extensive attention over the last decades. As zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials, fullerenes (C60, C70, etc.) have been extensively investigated for photocatalytic applications. Due to their unique properties, fullerenes can be used with other semiconductors as photocatalyst enhancers, and also as novel photocatalysts after being dispersed on non-semiconductors. This review summarizes fullerene-based materials (including fullerene/semiconductors and fullerene/non-semiconductors) for photocatalytic applications, such as water splitting, Cr (Ⅵ) reduction, pollutant degradation and bacterial disinfection. Firstly, the optical and electronic properties of fullerene are presented. Then, recent advances in the synthesis and photocatalytic mechanisms of fullerene-based photocatalysts are summarized. Furthermore, the effective performances of fullerene-based photocatalysts are discussed, mainly concerning photocatalytic H2 generation and pollutant removal. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of fullerene-based photocatalysts are proposed. It is expected that this review could bring a better understanding of fullerene-based photocatalysts for water treatment and environmental protection.

Energy Transfer in Dendritic Systems Having Pyrene Peripheral Groups as Donors and Different Acceptor Groups

In this feature article, a specific overview of resonance energy transfer (FRET) in dendritic molecules was performed. We focused mainly on constructs bearing peripheral pyrene groups as donor moieties using different acceptor groups, such as porphyrin, fullerene C60, ruthenium-bipyridine complexes, and cyclen-core. We have studied the effect of all the different donor-acceptor pairs in the energy transfer efficiency (FRET). In all cases, high FRET efficiency values were observed.

Simultaneous covalent and noncovalent carbon nanotube/Ag3PO4 hybrids: new insights into the origin of enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance

Understanding the interfacial interaction is of paramount importance for rationally designing carbon nanomaterial-based hybrids with optimal performance for electronics, optoelectronics, sensing, advanced energy conversion and storage. Here, we firstly reveal that both covalent and noncovalent interactions simultaneously exist in carbon nanotube (CNT)/Ag₃PO₄ hybrids by studying systematically the electronic and optical properties to elucidate the mechanism of their enhanced photocatalytic performance. Metallic CNT(9,0) may chemically or physically interact with the Ag₃PO₄(100) surface depending on its relative orientations, whereas semiconducting CNT(10,0) can only noncovalently functionalize Ag₃PO₄. The C-Ag bond in the covalently bonded hybrid and type-II, staggered, band alignment in noncovalent hybrids lead to a robust separation of photoexcited charge carriers between two constituents, thus enhancing the photocatalytic activity. The small band gap makes the CNT/Ag₃PO₄ hybrids absorb sunlight from the ultraviolet to infrared region. Moreover, CNTs are not only effective sensitizers, but also highly active co-catalysts in hybrids. The results can be rationalized by the available experiments, thereby partly resolving a debate on the interpretation of the experimental results, and paving the way for developing highly efficient carbon-based nanophotocatalysts.

Synergistic effect of CoPi-hole and Cu(ii)-electron cocatalysts for enhanced photocatalytic activity and photoinduced stability of Ag3PO4

CoPi–Cu(ii)/Ag₃PO₄ not only exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity than Ag₃PO₄, Cu(ii)/Ag₃PO₄ and CoPi/Ag₃PO₄ but could also maintain excellently stable performance.
