Plasma Functionalization of Silica Bilayer Polymorphs

Ultrathin silica films are considered suitable two-dimensional model systems for the study of fundamental chemical and physical properties of all-silica zeolites and their derivatives, as well as novel supports for the stabilization of single atoms. In the present work, we report the creation of a new model catalytic support based on the surface functionalization of different silica bilayer (BL) polymorphs with well-defined atomic structures. The functionalization is carried out by means of in situ H-plasma treatments at room temperature. Low energy electron diffraction and microscopy data indicate that the atomic structure of the films remains unchanged upon treatment. Comparing the experimental results (photoemission and infrared absorption spectra) with density functional theory simulations shows that H₂ is added via the heterolytic dissociation of an interlayer Si-O-Si siloxane bond and the subsequent formation of a hydroxyl and a hydride group in the top and bottom layers of the silica film, respectively. Functionalization of the silica films constitutes the first step into the development of a new type of model system of single-atom catalysts where metal atoms with different affinities for the functional groups can be anchored in the SiO₂ matrix in well-established positions. In this way, synergistic and confinement effects between the active centers can be studied in a controlled manner.

Two-Dimensional Ultrathin Silica Films

Two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin silica films have the potential to reach technological importance in electronics and catalysis. Several well-defined 2D-silica structures have been synthesized so far. The silica bilayer represents a 2D material with SiO₂ stoichiometry. It consists of precisely two layers of tetrahedral [SiO₄] building blocks, corner connected via oxygen bridges, thus forming a self-saturated silicon dioxide sheet with a thickness of ∼0.5 nm. Inspired by recent successful preparations and characterizations of these 2D-silica model systems, scientists now can forge novel concepts for realistic systems, particularly by atomic-scale studies with the most powerful and advanced surface science techniques and density functional theory calculations. This Review provides a solid introduction to these recent developments, breakthroughs, and implications on ultrathin 2D-silica films, including their atomic/electronic structures, chemical modifications, atom/molecule adsorptions, and catalytic reactivity properties, which can help to stimulate further investigations and understandings of these fundamentally important 2D materials.

Nucleation and growth of water ice on oxide surfaces: the influence of a precursor to water dissociation

We have investigated how nucleation and growth processes of ice are influenced by interfacial molecular interactions on some oxide surfaces, such as rutile TiO2(110), TiO2(100), MgO(100), and Al2O3(0001), based on the diffraction patterns of electrons transmitted through ice crystallites under the experimental configuration of reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). The cubic ice Ic grows on the TiO2(110) surface with the epitaxial relationship of (110)Ic//(110)TiO2 and [001]Ic//[11[combining macron]0]TiO2. The epitaxial ice growth tends to be disturbed on the TiO2(110) surface under the presence of oxygen vacancies and adatoms. The result is not simply ascribable to small misfit values between TiO2 and ice Ic lattices (∼2%) because ice grains are formed randomly on TiO2(100). No template effects are identified during ice nucleation on the pristine MgO(100) and Al2O3(0001) surfaces either. The water molecules are chemisorbed weakly on these surfaces as a precursor to dissociation via the acid-base interaction. Such anchored water species act as an inhibitor of epitaxial ice growth because the orientation flexibility of physisorbed water during nucleation is hampered at the interface by the preferential formation of hydrogen bonds.

Water Formation under Silica Thin Films: Real-Time Observation of a Chemical Reaction in a Physically Confined Space

Using low-energy electron microscopy and local photoelectron spectroscopy, water formation from adsorbed O and H2 on a Ru(0001) surface covered with a vitreous SiO2 bilayer (BL) was investigated and compared to the same reaction on bare Ru(0001). In both cases the reaction is characterized by moving reaction fronts. The reason for this might be related to the requirement of site release by O adatoms for further H2 -dissociative adsorption. Apparent activation energies (Eaapp ) are found for the front motion of 0.59 eV without cover and 0.27 eV under cover. We suggest that the smaller activation energy but higher reaction temperature for the reaction on the SiO2 BL covered Ru(0001) surface is due to a change of the rate-determining step. Other possible effects of the cover are discussed. Our results give the first values for Eaapp in confined space.

Controlling the charge state of supported nanoparticles in catalysis: lessons from model systems

We discuss in this paper two case studies related to nano-particle catalyst systems: one concerns a model system for the Cr/SiO₂ Phillips catalyst for ethylene polymerization and the other provides additional information on Au nano-particles supported on ultrathin MgO(100)/Ag(100) films.

Insights into Silica Bilayer Hydroxylation and Dissolution

Hydroxylation and dissolution of well-structured silica bilayer films grown on a ruthenium single-crystal support (SiO₂/Ru(0001)) was studied by temperature programmed desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Water desorption signals from SiO₂/Ru(0001) hydroxylated by electron-bombardment of adsorbed ice at 100 K were found to be comparable to those of hydroxylated bulk silica samples and attributed to adsorbed molecular water and silanol groups (vicinal and terminal). Isotopic exchange between ¹⁸O-labeled SiO₂ and ¹⁶O-labeled water suggests the occurrence of dynamic siloxane bond cleavage and re-formation during electron bombardment. Together with the observed strong dependence of hydroxylation activity on ice coverage, which is found to increase with increasing thickness of the ice layer, a hydroxylation mechanism based on the activation of siloxane bonds by water radiolysis products (e.g. hydroxyls) and subsequent water dissociation is proposed. Dissolution rates obtained from the attenuation of Si 2p and O 1s XPS signal intensities upon exposure of bilayer SiO₂/Ru(0001) to alkaline conditions at various temperatures are in agreement with the proposed rate model for bulk silica dissolution by OH⁻ attack and provide further corroboration of the proposed hydroxylation mechanism.

A Large-Area Transferable Wide Band Gap 2D Silicon Dioxide Layer

An atomically smooth silica bilayer is transferred from the growth substrate to a new support via mechanical exfoliation at millimeter scale. The atomic structure and morphology are maintained perfectly throughout the process. A simple heating treatment results in complete removal of the transfer medium. Low-energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and environmental scanning electron microscopy show the success of the transfer steps. Excellent chemical and thermal stability result from the absence of dangling bonds in the film structure. By adding this wide band gap oxide to the toolbox of 2D materials, possibilities for van der Waals heterostructures will be broadened significantly.

The Surface Science of Catalysis and More, Using Ultrathin Oxide Films as Templates: A Perspective

Surface science has had a major influence on the understanding of processes at surfaces relevant to catalysis. Real catalysts are complex materials, and in order to approach an understanding at the atomic level, it is necessary in a first step to drastically reduce complexity and then systematically increase it again in order to capture the various structural and electronic factors important for the function of the real catalytic material. The use of thin oxide films as templates to mimic three-dimensional supports as such or for metal particles as well as to model charge barriers turns out to be appropriate to approach an understanding of metal-support interactions. Thin oxide films also exhibit properties in their own right that turn out to be relevant in catalysis. Thin oxide film formation may also be used to create unique two-dimensional materials. The present perspective introduces the subject using case studies and indicates possible routes to further apply this approach successfully.
