Abstract
This review article describes the development of the use of aluminum compounds in the chemistry of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) over the last 14 years. It also discusses the synthesis, reactivity and catalytic applications of intermolecular, intramolecular and so-called hidden FLPs with phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon Lewis bases. The intrinsically higher acidity of aluminum compounds compared to their boron analogs opens up different reaction pathways. The results are presented in a more or less chronological order. It is shown that Al FLPs react with a variety of polar and non-polar substrates and form both stable adducts and reversibly activate bonds. Consequently, some catalytic applications of the title compounds were presented such as dimerization of alkynes, hydrogenation of tert-butyl ethylene and imines, C-F bond activation, reduction of CO2, dehydrogenation of amine borane and transfer of ammonia. In addition, various Al FLPs were used as initiators in polymerization reactions.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbene pentafluorophosphorus (NHC-PF5) adducts are six-coordinate phosphorus(v) compounds with emerging applications but poor synthetic accessibility. We have developed a simple and high yielding protocol for synthesizing imidazolylidene NHC-PF5 adducts from silylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate salts. Using this methodology, we have prepared a series of NHC-PF5 adducts in high yields, including new NHC-PF5 building blocks amenable to subsequent synthetic diversification. We also demonstrate that a similar approach enables access to analogous, synthetically elusive NHC-BF3 and NHC-SbF5 adducts.

Abstract
Coordination chemistry and frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry have been most commonly studied using monodentate Lewis acids. In this paper, we examine the corresponding reactions employing the 1,1- and 1,2-bis-boranes, PhCH2CH(B(C6F5)2)21 and Me3SiCH(B(C6F5)2)CH2B(C6F5)22, respectively. Coordination of isocyanide to these species results in the formation of the products RCH(B(C6F5)2CNtBu)CH2(B(C6F5)2CNtBu) (R = Ph 3, Me3Si 4). The rearrangement of 1 to give the 1,2-bis-borane adduct 3 was probed and attributed to a donor-induced retrohydroboration and subsequent hydroboration. The analogous reaction of 1 is evident in efforts to use the Gutman-Beckett method to assess its Lewis acidity. However, in combination with tBu3P, bis-boranes 1 and 2 form FLPs and react with H2 to give [tBu3PH][PhCH2CH(B(C6F5)2)2(μ-H)] 5a and [tBu3PH][Me3SiCH(B(C6F5)2)CH2(B(C6F5)2)(μ-H)] 6, respectively. Reactions of 1 and 2 with various donors and PhCCH were shown to give deprotonation and addition products, depending on the nature of the base. However, in the case of 1, products resulting from retrohydroboration, and subsequent hydroboration are evident. Several of these alkyne products are crystallographically characterized.

Abstract
The rise of CO2 concentrations in the environment due to anthropogenic activities results in global warming and threatens the future of humanity and biodiversity. To address excessive CO2 emissions and its effects on climate change, efforts towards CO2 capture and conversion into value adduct products such as methane, methanol, acetic acid, and carbonates have grown. Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) can activate small molecules, including CO2 and convert it into value added products. This review covers recent progress and mechanistic insights into intra- and inter-molecular FLPs comprised of varying Lewis acids and bases (from groups 13, 14, 15 of the periodic table as well as transition metals) that activate CO2 in stoichiometric and catalytic fashion towards reduced products.

Abstract
The phosphino-phosphonium cations of the form [R3 PPR'2 ]+ are labile and provide access to the constituent Lewis acidic and Lewis basic fragments. This permits frustrated Lewis pair-type addition reactions to alkynes, affording unprecedented phosphino-phosphination reactions and giving cations of the form [cis-R3 PCHC(R'')PR'2 ]+ . This reactivity is further adapted to prepare several examples of a rare class of dissymmetric cis-olefin-linked bidentate phosphines.

Abstract
Anionic hypercoordinated silicates with weak donors were proposed as key intermediates in numerous silicon-based reactions. However, their short-lived nature rendered even spectroscopic observations highly challenging. Here, we characterize hypercoordinated silicon anions, including the first bromido-, iodido-, formato-, acetato-, triflato- and sulfato-silicates. This is enabled by a new, donor-free polymeric form of Lewis superacidic bis(perchlorocatecholato)silane 1. Spectroscopic, structural, and computational insights allow a reassessment of Gutmann's empirical rules for the role of silicon hypercoordination in synthesis and catalysis. The electronic perturbations of 1 exerted on the bound anions indicate pronounced substrate activation.

Abstract
The synthesis of 1-silolyl and 1-germolyl triflates from the corresponding chlorides by salt metathesis reaction is reported. These covalent triflates are ideal starting materials for the preparation of ionic silolyl- and germolyl-imidazolium triflates by their reaction with N-heterocyclic carbenes. Similarily, ionic silolyl- and germolyl-oxophosphonium triflates are obtained by substitution of the triflate group by triethylphosphane oxide Et3PO. The analysis of their 31P NMR chemical shifts according to the Gutmann-Beckett method reveal the high Lewis acidity of the underlying silolyl and germolyl cations. Further analysis of structural and NMR parameters of the silolyl- and germolyl-imidazolium and oxophosphonium triflates indicates that these compounds are covalently bonded silole and germole derivatives with insignificant contributions from silolyl- or germolyl cations. Silolyl and germolyl triflates are however synthetic equivalents of these cations and might serve as a source for electrophilic silolyl and germolyl units.

Abstract
The synthesis and full characterization of α-silylated (α-SiCPs; 1-7) and α-germylated (α-GeCPs; 11-13) phosphorus ylides bearing one chloride substituent R3 PC(R1 )E(Cl)R2 2 (R=Ph; R1 =Me, Et, Ph; R2 =Me, Et, iPr, Mes; E=Si, Ge) is presented. The molecular structures were determined by X-ray diffraction studies. The title compounds were applied in halide abstraction studies in order to access cationic species. The reaction of Ph3 PC(Me)Si(Cl)Me2 (1) with Na[B(C6 F5 )4 ] furnished the dimeric phosphonium-like dication [Ph3 PC(Me)SiMe2 ]2 [B(C6 F5 )4 ]2 (8). The highly reactive, mesityl- or iPr-substituted cationic species [Ph3 PC(Me)SiMes2 ][B(C6 F5 )4 ] (9) and [Ph3 PC(Et)SiiPr2 ][B(C6 F5 )4 ] (10) could be characterized by NMR spectroscopy. Carrying out the halide abstraction reaction in the sterically demanding ether iPr2 O afforded the protonated α-SiCP [Ph3 PCH(Et)Si(Cl)iPr2 ][B(C6 F5 )4 ] (6 dec) by sodium-mediated basic ether decomposition, whereas successfully synthesized [Ph3 PC(Et)SiiPr2 ][B(C6 F5 )4 ] (10) readily cleaves the F-C bond in fluorobenzene. Thus, the ambiphilic character of α-SiCPs is clearly demonstrated. The less reactive germanium analogue [Ph3 PC(Me)GeMes2 ][B{3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 }4 ] (14) was obtained by treating 11 with Na[B{3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 }4 ] and fully characterized including by X-ray diffraction analysis. Structural parameters indicate a strong CYlide -Ge interaction with high double bond character, and consequently the C-E (E=Si, Ge) bonds in 9, 10 and 14 were analyzed with NBO and AIM methods.

Abstract
The lithium salts of anionic N‐heterocyclic thiones and selones [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}Li(toluene)] (1: E=S; 2: E=Se; WCA=B(C6F5)3, IDipp=1,3‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin‐2‐ylidene), which contain a weakly coordinating anionic (WCA) borate moiety in the imidazole backbone were reacted with Me3SiCl, to furnish the silylated adducts (WCA‐IDipp)ESiMe3 (3: E=S; 4: E=Se). The reaction of the latter with [(η5‐C5Me5)MCl2]2 (M=Rh, Ir) afforded the rhodium(III) and iridium(III) half‐sandwich complexes [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}MCl(η5‐C5Me5)] (5–8). The direct reaction of the lithium salts 1 and 2 with a half or a full equivalent of [M(COD)Cl]2 (M=Rh, Ir) afforded the monometallic complexes [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}M(COD)] (9–12) or the bimetallic complexes [μ2‐{(WCA‐IDipp)E}M2(COD)2(μ2‐Cl)] (13–16), respectively. The bonding situation in these complexes has been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing thiolate or selenolate ligand character with negligible metal‐chalcogen π‐interaction.

Abstract
The history of silyl cations has all the makings of a drama but with a happy ending. Being considered reactive intermediates impossible to isolate in the condensed phase for decades, their actual characterization in solution and later in solid state did only fuel the discussion about their existence and initially created a lot of controversy. This perception has completely changed today, and silyl cations and their donor-stabilized congeners are now widely accepted compounds with promising use in synthetic chemistry. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the fundamental facts and principles of the chemistry of silyl cations, including reliable ways of their preparation as well as their physical and chemical properties. The striking features of silyl cations are their enormous electrophilicity and as such reactivity as super Lewis acids as well as fluorophilicity. Known applications rely on silyl cations as reactants, stoichiometric reagents, and promoters where the reaction success is based on their steady regeneration over the course of the reaction. Silyl cations can even be discrete catalysts, thereby opening the next chapter of their way into the toolbox of synthetic methodology.

Abstract
Phosphonium ions are widely used in preparative organic synthesis and catalysis. The provision of new types of cations that contain both functional and chiral information is a major synthetic challenge and can open up new horizons in asymmetric cation-directed and Lewis acid catalysis. We discovered an efficient methodology towards new Si-chiral four-membered CPSSi* heterocyclic cations. Three synthetic approaches are presented. The stereochemical sequence of anchimerically assisted cation formation with B(C6 F5 )3 and subsequent hydride addition was fully elucidated and proceeds with excellent preservation of the chiral information at the stereogenic silicon atom. Also the mechanism of dihydrogen release from a protonated hydrosilane was studied in detail by the help of Si-centered chirality as stereochemical probe. Chemoselectivity switch (dihydrogen release vs. protodesilylation) can easily be achieved through slight modifications of the solvent. A matched/mismatched case was identified and the intermolecularity of this reaction supported by spectroscopic, kinetic, deuterium-labeling experiments, and quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract
A dicationic bis(NHC)-stabilised silyldiium complex, [bis(NHC)-SiPh2]2+ (72+) (bis(NHC) = [CH2(NC3H2NDipp)2], Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3), was synthesised for the first time. It reacts with sodium phosphaethynolate (NaOCP) as a source of monoanionic phosphorus to give the P-insertion product [bis(NHC)-PSiPh2]+ (8+). The latter comprises a seven-membered heterocycle containing a Si-P moiety which can easily be desilylated when exposed to dichlorophosphanes as exemplified by the synthesis of the diphosphanide cations [bis(NHC)-PPCy]+ (9+) and [bis(NHC)-PPPh]+ (10+).

Abstract
Silylium ions undergo a single-electron reduction with phosphanes, leading to transient silyl radicals and the corresponding stable phosphoniumyl radical cations. As supported by DFT calculations, phosphanes with electron-rich 2,6-disubstituted aryl groups are sufficiently strong reductants to facilitate this single-electron transfer (SET). Frustration as found in kinetically stabilized triarylsilylium ion/phosphane Lewis pairs is not essential, and silylphosphonium ions, which are generated by conventional Lewis adduct formation of solvent-stabilized trialkylsilylium ions and phosphanes, engage in the same radical mechanism. The trityl cation, a Lewis acid with a higher electron affinity, even oxidizes trialkylphosphanes, such as tBu3 P, which does not react with either B(C6 F5 )3 or silylium ions.

Abstract
Two novel frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) aminoboranes, (1-Pip-2-BH2-C6H4)2 (2; Pip = piperidyl) and (1-NEt2-2-BH2-C6H4)2 (3; NEt2 = diethylamino), were synthesized, and their structural features were elucidated both in solution and in the solid state. The reactivity of these species for the borylation of heteroarenes was investigated and compared to previously reported (1-TMP-2-BH2-C6H4)2 (1; TMP = tetramethylpiperidyl) and (1-NMe2-2-BH2-C6H4)2 (4; NMe2 = dimethylamino). It was shown that 2 and 3 are more active catalysts for the borylation of heteroarenes than the bulkier analogue 1. Kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations were performed with 1 and 2 to ascertain the influence of the amino group of this FLP-catalyzed transformation. The C-H activation step was found to be more facile with smaller amines at the expense of a more difficult dissociation of the dimeric species. The bench-stable fluoroborate salts of all catalysts (1F-4F) have been synthesized and tested for the borylation reaction. The new precatalysts 2F and 3F are showing higher reaction rates and yields for multigram-scale syntheses.
