Pentanuclear lanthanide pyramids based on thiacalix[4]arene ligand exhibiting slow magnetic relaxation

Thiacalix[4]arene-Sandwiched Sandglass-like Ln9 Clusters (Ln = Tb and Eu): Insights into the Selective Luminescence Quenching Properties by p-Nitrobenzene Derivatives

Nonanuclear lanthanide clusters Ln₉ (Ln = Tb and Eu) based on p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H₄TC4A) have been synthesized by the solvothermal reaction and were structurally determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The framework of Ln₉ can be termed as a sandglass-like structure whose two Ln₄-TC4A polynuclear secondary building units are bridged by one octa-coordinate {Ln(μ₃-O)₈} unit. Efficient TC4A-to-Ln energy transfer was observed for Tb₉ but not for Eu₉. The luminescence quantum yield (QY) of Tb₉ in the solid state at room temperature was determined to be 17.6%, while its highest QY in a methanolic solution (2 × 10^-5 mol/L) is 59.2% upon excitation at 318 nm. The luminescence of Tb₉ was quenched selectively by derivatives of p-nitrobenzene, as demonstrated by the results of photoluminescence and UV-vis titration experiments and supported by density functional theory calculations. We believe that the interactions between the analyte molecules and the pocket of Tb₉ are primarily responsible for the observed quenching. As such, this work represents one of the few examples of utilizing structurally interesting lanthanide cluster complexes as a sensory platform for the recognition of meaningful analytes and portends the further development of lanthanide-calixarene-complex-based functional materials.

Achieving stable photoluminescence by double thiacalix[4]arene-capping: the lanthanide-oxo cluster core matters

Luminescence stability is a critical consideration for applying phosphors in practical devices. In this work, we report two categories of double p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H₄TC4A) capped clusters that exhibit characteristic lanthanide luminescence. Specifically, {[Ln₄(μ₄-OH)(TC4A)₂(DMF)₆(CH₃OH)₃(HCOO)Cl₂]}·xCH₃OH (Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2); x = 0–1) with square-planar [Ln₄(μ₄-OH)] cluster cores and {[Ln₉(μ₅-OH)₂(μ₃-OH)₈(OCH₃) (TC4A)₂ (H₂O)₂₄Cl₉]}·xDMF (Ln = Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5); x = 2–6) with hourglass-like [Ln₉(μ₅-OH)₂(μ₃-OH)₈] cluster cores are synthesized and characterized. By comparing 2 and 4, we find that several critical luminescence properties (such as quantum efficiency and luminescence stabilities) depend directly on the cluster core structure. With the square-planar [Ln₄(μ₄-OH)] cluster cores, 2 demonstrates high quantum yield (∼65%) and excellent luminescence stability against moisture, high temperature, and UV-radiation. A white light-emitting diode (LED) with ultrahigh color quality is successfully fabricated by mixing 2 with commercial phosphors. These results imply that high quality phosphors might be achieved by exploiting the double thiacalix[4]arene-capping strategy, with an emphasis on the cluster core structure.

{Ln₄} cores outperform {Ln₉} cores in achieving stable photoluminescence from double thiacalix[4]arene-capped lanthanide-oxo clusters.

Ultrastable Photoluminescence Enabled by 1D Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Double Thiacalix[4]arene-Capped Nodes

Luminescent stability is a vital factor that dictates the application of lanthanide luminescent materials. Designing luminescent lanthanide cluster nodes that form an extended framework with predictable linking patterns may help enhance the structural stability of the lanthanide complexes and hence lead to improved luminescent stability. Herein, we report a series of one-dimensional (1D) rare-earth metal-organic framework compounds, {Ln₄(μ₄-OH)(TC4A)₂(H₂O)₂(CH₃O)(HCOO)₂(HCOOH)}·xCH₃OH (Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), Tb (3), Dy (4); x = 1-5), based on double thiacalix[4]arene-capped Ln₄(μ₄-OH)(TC4A)₂ nodes. The axially capped Ln₄(μ₄-OH)(TC4A)₂ nodes are connected equatorially by formate bridges to form zigzag 1D-metal-organic framework (MOF) chains, which further assemble into a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) structure via hydrogen bonding. These unique features result in a stable structure and therefore superior luminescent stability. For example, the Tb-based 1D-MOF (3) exhibits intensive green photoluminescence with a quantum yield of 53% and an average decay time of 1.33 × 10⁶ ns. It maintains its integrated emission intensity at 96.5, 94.5, and 89.4% of the original value after being exposed to moisture (soaking in water for 10 days), elevated temperature (150 °C), and UV (15 days of continuous radiation), respectively, demonstrating excellent luminescent stability. We adopt the Tb-based 1D-MOF (3) as the green phosphor and successfully fabricate a prototype white-light-emitting diode (LED) with stable emission under long-term operation. Our synthetic strategy allows control over the linking pattern of lanthanide nodes, providing a predictive route to obtain lanthanide MOFs with improved luminescent stability.

Quick and robust PDF data acquisition using a laboratory single-crystal X-ray diffractometer for study of polynuclear lanthanide complexes in solid form and in solution

Self-assembled polynuclear lanthanide hydroxo complexes are important objects in the reticular chemistry approach to the design of various functional materials. Revealing their structure in the solid state and understanding the molecular mechanism of self-assembly in solution require a universal and reliable structural method. Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis is a powerful technique which enables structural insight for a wide range of crystalline and amorphous materials on the nanoscale, but commonly measurements are performed at synchrotron X-ray sources or on specially designed laboratory diffractometers. In the present paper, a standard Bruker D8 QUEST single-crystal X-ray diffractometer equipped with a micro-focus Mo tube and CMOS Photon III detector was adapted to measure PDF data of high quality with Q max = 16.97 Å–1 for solid and liquid samples. An improved data collection strategy and the original data reduction software FormagiX enable calibration and azimuthal full-frame integration of 2D frames, delivering reliable PDFs up to 80 Å with instrumental parameters Q damp = 0.018 Å−1 and Q broad = 0.010 Å−1. The effectiveness of the developed approach was demonstrated with reference samples and real-case studies of tetranuclear lanthanide hydroxocarboxylates in solid form and in solution.

Molecular assemblies from linear-shaped Ln4 clusters to Ln8 clusters using different β-diketonates: disparate magnetocaloric effects and single-molecule magnet behaviours

A series of tetranuclear lanthanide-based clusters [Ln₄(dbm)₆(L)₂(CH₃OH)₄]·2CH₃OH (Ln(III) = Gd (1), Dy (2), and Ho (3); H₃L = 2-[(2-(hydroxyimino)propanehydrazide)methyl]-2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, Hdbm = dibenzoylmethane) and octanuclear lanthanide-based clusters [Ln₈(HL)₁₀(CH₃O)₄(CH₃OH)₂]·6CH₃OH (Ln(III) = Gd (4), Dy (5)) were assembled using a polydentate Schiff-base ligand H₃L and two different β-diketone salts via a solvothermal method, and their structures and magnetic properties have been characterized. Interestingly, β-diketones play an important role in assembling and affecting the structures of Ln₄ to Ln₈ clusters. This is the first use of β-diketone to affect the structures of polynuclear Ln(III)-based clusters from linear-shaped Ln₄ clusters to Ln₈ clusters. Magnetic studies revealed that antiferromagnetic interactions exist in clusters 1-Gd4 and 4-Gd8. More importantly, clusters 1-Gd4 and 4-Gd8 display significant cryogenic magnetic refrigeration properties (-ΔS_m = 24.88 J kg^-1 K^-1 for 1-Gd4 and -ΔS_m = 32.52 J kg^-1 K^-1 for 4-Gd8); the results show that cluster 4-Gd8 exhibits a larger magnetocaloric effect than 1-Gd4. Cluster 2-Dy4 shows remarkable single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior (ΔE/k_B = 67.5 K and τ₀ = 3.06 × 10^-7 s) under a zero dc field, and 5-Dy8 exhibits a field-induced SMM-like behavior (ΔE/k_B = 39.83 K and τ₀ = 2.12 × 10^-7 s) under a 5000 Oe dc field.

Magnetic dynamics of an open-ring tridysprosium complex employing mixed ligands

By employing mixed ligands, a new trinuclear dysprosium complex [Dy3(dbm)3(L)4](ClO4)2·CH2Cl2·2MeOH (1, Hdbm = dibenzoylmethane; HL = 2-methoxy-6-((quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol) was synthesized by a one-pot reaction. According to structural characterization, all the 8-coordinated Dy(iii) sites are well arranged with slightly distorted square antiprism (D4d) geometries. Magnetic measurements reveal that 1 exhibits typical single-molecule magnetic behavior at zero magnetic field and shows rarely open hysteresis loops up to 3 K among open-ring {Dy3} SMMs, where the relaxation time remains very stable under the protection from the Dy-Dy magnetic coupling in the open-ring arrangement of Ising spins.

Three thiacalix[4]arene-based Cu(i) coordination polymers: catalytic activities for azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions and luminescence properties

Three new coordination polymers, [Cu₂(CN)(L)(OCH₃)]·CH₃OH·3H₂O (1), [Cu₃(Br)₃(L)] (2) and [Cu(I)(L)]·1.5H₂O (3), have been solvothermally prepared by reacting L (5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,26,27,28-tetra[(3-pyridylmethyl)oxy]-2,8,14,20-tetrathiacalix[4]arene) with Cu(i) halide. 1 and 2 exhibit layers. 3 displays a chain, a supramolecular layer constructed by hydrogen bonds. The performance of 1-3 was examined as heterogeneous catalysts for azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions. Most strikingly, 1 and 2 show predominant efficiency with high regioselectivity and excellent recyclability. Remarkably, solids 1-3 all have luminescence characteristics under irradiation with a UV lamp.

Four half-sandwich lanthanide crown ether complexes were successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. Dysprosium complexes show both the slow relaxation of magnetization and photoluminescence behaviors.

Thiacalix[4]arene-supported heterodinuclear NiII–LnIII complexes: slow magnetic relaxation behavior in the dysprosium analogue

Three thiacalix[4]arene-supported ferromagnetic Ni^II–Ln^III complexes have been isolated. The dysprosium analogue exhibits field-induced SMM behavior and diamagnetic dilution can efficiently influence the dipole–dipole interaction between magnetic centers.

Goblet-shaped pentanuclear lanthanide clusters assembled with a cyclen derivative ligand exhibiting slow magnetic relaxation

Two goblet-shaped 5Ln clusters have been assembled. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that both compounds feature a novel homometallic appended cubane geometry. The magnetic study on 1 suggests the presence of anti-ferromagnetic interactions, whereas 2 exhibits SMM behavior.

New sandwich-type lanthanide complexes based on closed-macrocyclic Schiff base and phthalocyanine molecules

Two new sandwich-type lanthanide complexes simultaneously containing closed-macrocyclic Schiff base and phthalocyanine molecules were synthesized and structurally characterized. The magnetic studies reveal the corresponding dysprosium complex behaves as a typical SMM.
