Difluoroboron Complexes Based on Benzimidazole-Phenolates as Blue Emitters

Novel four-coordinated boron complexes (1-5) were synthesized via a reaction between BF3·CH3OH and benzimidazole-phenolate ligands (L1-L5), which are N,O-donors. These complexes exhibit intense blue emission in the solution and solid states accompanied by notable fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF). The study of the structure-property relation, through theoretical and experimental approaches, revealed a distinctive trend where compounds incorporating electron-donating substituents (methyl and ethoxy groups) in the phenolate moiety manifest shifts in emission wavelengths across the blue spectrum, concomitant with an increase in ΦF. Furthermore, the incorporation of an aromatic ring into the benzimidazole moiety considerably intensifies the rate of radiative relaxation from excited states. Notably, in the solid phase, either as a crystalline powder or loaded into polymer films, these modified complexes maintain or even surpass ΦF values observed in molecular solutions, ranging from 0.18 to 0.57, depending on the substitution. This characteristic makes these compounds attractive for applications in optoelectronics. All of the compounds were characterized using 1H, 13C, 11B, and 19F NMR, elemental analysis, and the molecular structures were corroborated through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Computational calculations via time-dependent density functional theory further elucidate the tunability of optical bandgaps through group substitution on ligands, aligning well with experimental observations.

Deconstructive Cycloaromatization Strategy toward N,O-Bidentate Ligands from Indolizines and Cyclopropenones

The innovative construction of novel N,O-bidentate ligands represents a long-standing challenge for chemists. Here, we report an unprecedented approach for the construction of N,O-bidentate derivatives via the merging of ring deconstruction with cycloaromatization of indolizines and cyclopropenones. Without any catalysts, our method can deliver a series of polyaryl 2-(pyridin-2-yl)phenols in excellent yields. In addition, N,O-bidentate organic BF₂ complexes can also be constructed via this one-pot protocol.

Recent advances in the synthesis of luminescent tetra-coordinated boron compounds

Tetra-coordinated boron compounds offer a plethora of luminescent materials. Different chelation around the boron center (O,O-, N,C-, N,O-, and N,N-) has been explored to tune the electronic and photophysical properties of tetra-coordinated boron compounds. A number of fascinating molecules with interesting properties such as aggregation induced emission, mechanochromism and tunable emission by changing the solvent polarity were realised. Owing to their rich and unique properties, some of the molecules have shown applications in making optoelectronic devices, probes and so on. This perspective provides an overview of the recent developments of tetra-coordinated boron compounds and their potential applications.

The effect of locking π-conjugation in organoboron moieties in the structures of luminescent tetracoordinate boron complexes

A series of 8 luminescent borafluorene complexes were extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically in order to elucidate the effect of organoboron moiety rigidification on the physicochemical properties of these compounds. Due to the spiro geometry of the boron atom, borafluorene and ligand units are perpendicularly aligned, which considerably affects the flexibility of the molecule as well as its solid-state structure. Through comparative analysis with close diphenyl analogues, we show how these structural features influence the thermal, photoluminescent and charge mobility behaviour of the studied compounds. Crystal structural analysis revealed that the molecules are connected mostly through C-HO and C-Hπ interactions formed between perpendicularly aligned borafluorene and ligand moieties from neighboured molecules, serving as a complementary donor and acceptor of electron density, respectively. This also efficiently prevents molecules from engaging in unfavoured π-stacking contact. Furthermore, structural analysis suggests that borafluorene complexes possess a considerable degree of flexibility due to OBN heterocycle distortions and mutual borafluorene-ligand plane movements. The magnitude of these effects strictly depends on the ligand structure and may lead either to enhancing or lowering the quantum yield value with respect to BPh₂ analogues, while the absorption and emission wavelength are slightly affected. The measured photophysical parameters for solid-state samples showed that the studied complexes are much better emitters in their crystalline states that in amorphous films. The TD-DFT and NTO calculations revealed a significant change in frontier molecular distribution, with the HOMO localized on the borafluorene moiety. However, as the HOMO-LUMO transition is geometrically not favoured, excitation occurred from HOMO-1 localized on the ligand. Finally, aggregation effects were discussed based on supramolecular arrangements in crystal structures and charge transfer rates obtained from theoretical calculations in the framework of the Marcus-Hush approximation. They suggest that borafluorene complexes are much better electron carriers with respect to non-annulated BPh₂ complexes.

Synthesis and Characterization of Oxazaborinin Phosphonate for Blue OLED Emitter Applications

A blue-light emitting material based on a boron complex containing heteroaromatic phosphonate ligand is synthesized and characterized. The Phospho-Fries rearrangement is used in the synthesis route of the ligand as a convenient method of introducing phosphonate groups into phenols. Structural, thermal and photophysical properties of the resulting oxazaborinin phosphonate compound have been characterized. DFT geometry optimizations were studied as well as the spatial position and symmetry of the HOMO and LUMO. Good thermal stability up to 250 °C enables vacuum deposition methods next to solution processing. Combining the work function with the optical band gap from UV-Vis measurements shows that band alignment is possible with standard contact materials. Photoluminescence reveals an emission peak at 428 nm, which is suitable for a blue light-emitter.

The effect of conformational isomerism on the optical properties of bis(8-oxyquinolato) diboron complexes with a 2,2'-biphenyl backbone

A fluorescent bis(8-oxyquinolato) diborinic complex with a central 2,2'-biphenyl backbone 1 and its octafluoro analogue 2 were synthesized to study the optical-structural relationship of sterically encumbered molecules featuring close intramolecular π-stacking interactions involving chromophore units. The crystal structure of 1 revealed a unique π-stacked arrangement of two pendant phenyl groups and two 8-oxyquinolato ligands (Q) located in the inner part of the complex. Unlike 1, the closely related complex 2 features conformational isomerism, and two major forms, namely 2-syn and 2-anti, are observed in solution to a varying extent depending on the solvent polarity. Form 2-syn, a geometrical analogue of 1, is preferable in polar solutions, whereas its rotational isomer 2-anti featuring π-stacking interactions between the terminal phenyl group and Q ligand dominates in benzene and chloromethane solutions. The observed conformational equilibria strongly affect the optical properties of the system, specifically leading to a significant increase of the quantum yield of emission (from 22% in MeCN to 38% in benzene) accompanied by a bathochromic shift (Δλ = 10 nm) of absorption and hypsochromic shifts (Δλ = -8 nm) of emission spectra with decreasing solvent polarity. This effect was ascribed to the variation in frontier orbital distributions.

Four-coordinate triarylborane synthesis via cascade B-Cl/C-B cross-metathesis and C-H bond borylation

To develop a simple and efficient synthetic method for four-coordinate triarylboranes, we herein describe a tandem highly selective B-Cl/C-B cross-metathesis of two of the same or different arylboranes and C-H bond borylation to synthesize four-coordinate triarylboranes with a broad substrate scope. By switching substituent groups of the target molecules, different emission wavelengths can be achieved from 467 nm to 583 nm with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties.

2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)imidazole-based four-coordinate organoboron compounds with efficient deep blue photoluminescence and electroluminescence

Four-coordinate organoboron compounds that can realize efficient electroluminescence with a CIE coordinate close to that of standard blue light (0.14, 0.08) have been developed.

Reunderstanding the Fluorescent Behavior of Four-Coordinate Monoboron Complexes Containing Monoanionic Bidentate Ligands

We demonstrated for the first time that, at temperatures below the melting point of a given polar solvent, the emission of some four-coordinate monoboron complexes containing monoanionic bidentate (NO) ligands shifted to lower wavelengths, but no such shift was observed for studies conducted in nonpolar solvents. This means that the emission from a polar solvent appears at shorter wavelengths if compared with that from a nonpolar solvent when the measurement was performed at low temperatures, a phenomenon totally different from that observed for conventional solvatochromic fluorophores. The finding was rationalized by considering the temperature-dependent conformational relaxation of the tetrahedron monoboron complexes from their local excited (LE) state to their relaxed excited (RE) state. Further studies revealed that variating the structure of the chelating ligands could result in remarkable changes in the fluorescent colors of the monoboron complexes. However, changing the structure of other two monodentate ligands showed little effect upon the fluorescence property of the compounds. Therefore, it is anticipated that the monoboron complexes may be taken as a platform to construct a variety of functional molecular systems via alternating the structure of the chelating ligand and that of the monodentate ligand. As an example, naphthalene was introduced as a monodentate ligand, and independent emissions from naphthalene unit and the other part of the monoboron complex as well as intramolecular energy transfer between them were observed. It is believed that the present work provides a new insight into the monoboron complexes, laying the foundation for them to be explored for developing novel molecular systems.

Enhancing the Brightness of Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystal Based Green Light-Emitting Devices through the Interface Engineering with Perfluorinated Ionomer

High photoluminescence quantum yield, easily tuned emission colors, and high color purity of perovskite nanocrystals make this class of material attractive for light source or display applications. Here, green light-emitting devices (LEDs) were fabricated using inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals as emitters. By introducing a thin film of perfluorinated ionomer (PFI) sandwiched between the hole transporting layer and perovskite emissive layer, the device hole injection efficiency has been significantly enhanced. At the same time, PFI layer suppressed charging of the perovskite nanocrystal emitters thus preserving their superior emissive properties, which led to the three-fold increase in peak brightness reaching 1377 cd m(-2). The full width at half-maximum of the symmetric emission peak with color coordinates of (0.09, 0.76) was 18 nm, the narrowest value among perovskite based green LEDs.

A diphenylamino-substituted quinacridone derivative: red fluorescence based on intramolecular charge-transfer transition

A red emissive quinacridone derivative has been prepared through construction of an ICT system. This resulted in the first efficient and bright red OLED based on a quinacridone derivative.

Bis(2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-5-fluorophenolate)beryllium: a high-performance electron transport material for phosphorescent organic light-emitting devices

A beryllium complex with a low-lying LUMO level, high triplet energy and high electron mobility served as an excellent electron transport material for green, yellow and red phosphorescent OLEDs.
