Synthesis of Vanadyl Complexes of N-Confused Porphyrins and Their Bromoperoxidase-like Catalytic Activity

Two new vanadyl complexes of N-confused porphyrins (NCPs), [VONCTPP] (V-1) and [VONCP(OMe)8] (V-2), have been synthesized for the first time and investigated as a catalyst for the oxidative bromination reaction of phenol and its derivatives. This article further delineates crystal structures, photophysical, and redox properties of both the vanadyl complexes. Complexes V-1 and V-2 exhibited a significant red shift in their absorption spectra compared with their respective free bases. The single-crystal structure of V-1 revealed that the complex is in the 2H tautomeric form, while EPR studies revealed the +4 oxidation state of vanadium metal having an axial compression with dxy1 configuration. Catalytic potential for bromoperoxidases-like activity has been explored for both complexes V-1 and V-2 for the first time in NCP chemistry with excellent TOF values (4.7-6.3 s-1 for V-1 and 7.3-8.7 s-1 for V-2) using KBr as a source of bromine and H2O2 as a green oxidant in aqueous acidic medium at 298 K. Notably, both catalysts show excellent recyclability over five cycles. The vanadyl-metalated NCPs exhibit excellent stability in the air.

Enhanced Catalytic Activity of Binuclear Oxidovanadium(IV) Bisbenzimidazole Linked Porphyrin Dimer for the Generation of Biologically Active 3,4-Dihydropyrimidinones and Their Corresponding Thiones

Binuclear vanadyl(IV) porphyrin (V2BP), where two vanadium(IV) porphyrin macrocycles are linked through benzimidazole units at the β-positions, has been prepared and characterized with various techniques, such as UV-vis, Fourier transform-infrared, electron paramagnetic resonance, cyclic voltammetry, density functional transform calculations, and mass spectrometry. V2BP exhibits a red shift (Δλmax = 10 nm) in the Soret band as compared with unsubstituted parent vanadyl(IV) meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (VP). The synthesized binuclear vanadyl(IV) porphyrin (V2BP) has further been studied as a catalyst to explore a single-pot multicomponent Biginelli reaction producing biologically active 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-one (DHPM)-based biomolecules and the corresponding thiones under solvent-free conditions and its catalytic activity has been compared with vanadyl(IV) meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (VP). Several reaction conditions, such as the amount of catalyst, time, solvent, and temperature, have been optimized to obtain the maximum yield of DHPMs or thiones. The synthesized β-functionalized V2BP porphyrin dimer manifests much higher conversion (84-95% yield) of DHPMs or the corresponding thiones under the optimized reaction conditions with high TON (4454-5037) and TOF (1113-1259 h-1) values for the one-pot multicomponent Biginelli reaction as compared to the literature. The catalyst exhibited excellent recyclability up to 10 cycles.

Photophysical characterization of tetrahydroxyphenyl porphyrin Zn(II) and V(IV) complexes: experimental and DFT study

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising technique for the treatment of various diseases. In this sense, the singlet oxygen quantum yield (Φ∆) is a physical-chemical property that allows to stablish the applicability of a potential photosensitizers (PS) as a drug for PDT. In the herein report, the Φ∆ of three photosensitizers was determined: metal-free tetrahydroxyphenyl porphyrin (THPP), THPP-Zn and the THPP-V metal complexes. Their biological application was also evaluated. Therefore, the in vitro study was carried out to assess their biological activity against Escherichia coli. The metal-porphyrin complexes exhibited highest activities against the bacterial strain Escherichia coli. at the highest concentration (175 μg/mL) and show better activity than the free base ligand (salts and blank solution). Results indicated a relation between Φ∆ and the inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli, thus, whereas higher is the Φ∆, higher is the inhibitory activity. The values of the Φ∆ and the inhibitory activity follows the tendency THPP-Zn > THPP > THPP-V. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations allowed to gain deep insight into the electronic and optical properties of THPP-Zn macrocycle, which let to verify the most probable energy transfer pathway involved in the singlet oxygen generation.

Oxido-Molybdenum(V) Corroles as Robust Catalysts for Oxidative Bromination and Selective Epoxidation Reactions in Aqueous Media under Mild Conditions

Two new meso-substituted oxido-molybdenum corroles were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. In the thermogram, MoO[TTC] (1) exhibited excellent thermal stability up to 491 °C while MoO[TNPC] (2) exhibited good stability up to 318 °C. The oxidation states of the molybdenum(V) were verified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and exhibited an axial compression with d_xy¹ configuration. Oxido-molybdenum(V) complexes were utilized for the selective epoxidation of various olefins with high TOF values (2066-3287 h^-1) in good yields in a CH₃CN/H₂O (3:2, v/v) mixture in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant and NaHCO₃ as a promoter. The oxidative bromination catalytic activity of oxido-molybdenum(V) complexes in an aqueous medium has been reported for the first time. Surprisingly, MoO[TNPC] (2) biomimics of the vanadium bromoperoxidase (VBPO) enzyme activity exhibited remarkably high TOF values (36 988-61 646 h^-1) for the selective oxidative bromination of p-cresol and other phenol derivatives. Catalyst MoO[TNPC] (2) exhibited higher TOF values and better catalytic activity than catalyst MoO[TTC] (1) due to the presence of electron-withdrawing nitro groups evident from cyclic voltammetric studies.

Facile Synthesis of β-Tetracyano Vanadyl Porphyrin from Its Tetrabromo Analogue and Its Excellent Catalytic Activity for Bromination and Epoxidation Reactions

Complex 2,3,12,13-tetracyano-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinatooxidovanadium(IV) {[V^IVOTPP(CN)₄], 2} has been prepared by nucleophilic substitution of β-bromo groups of the corresponding 2,3,12,13-tetrabromo-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinatooxidovanadium(IV) {[V^IVOTPP(Br)₄], 1} using CuCN in quinoline. Both complexes show biomimetic catalytic activity similar to enzyme haloperoxidases and efficiently brominate various phenol derivatives in the presence of KBr, H₂O₂, and HClO₄ in the aqueous medium. Between these two complexes, 2 exhibits excellent catalytic activity with high turnover frequency (35.5-43.3 s^-1) due to the strong electron-withdrawing nature of the cyano groups attached at β-positions and its moderate nonplanar structure as compared to 1 (TOF = 22.1-27.4 s^-1). Notably, this is the highest turnover frequency value observed for any porphyrin system. The selective epoxidation of various terminal alkenes using complex 2 has also been carried out, and the results are good, specifying the importance of electron-withdrawing cyano groups. Catalysts 1 and 2 are recyclable, and the catalytic activity proceeds through the corresponding [V^VO(OH)TPP(Br)₄] and [V^VO(OH)TPP(CN)₄] intermediates, respectively.

V-Porphyrins Encapsulated or Supported on Siliceous Materials: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photoelectrochemical Properties

Metalloporphyrin-containing mesoporous materials, named VTPP@SBA, were prepared via a simple anchoring of vanadyl porphyrin (5,10,15,20-Tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine vanadium(IV) oxide) through a SBA-15-type mesoporous material. For comparison, vanadyl porphyrin was also impregnated on SiO₂ (VTPP/SiO₂). The characterization results of catalysts by XRD, FTIR, DR-UV-vis, and EPR confirm the incorporation of vanadyl porphyrin within the mesoporous SBA-15. These catalysts have also been studied using electrochemical and photoelectrochemical methods. Impedance measurements confirmed that supporting the porphyrin in silica improved the electrical conductivity of samples. In fact, when using mesoporous silica, current densities associated with oxidation/reduction processes appreciably increased, implying an enhancement in charge transfer processes and, therefore, in electrochemical performance. All samples presented n-type semiconductivity and provided an interesting photoelectrocatalytic response upon illumination, especially silica-supported porphyrins. This is the first time that V-porphyrin-derived materials have been tested for photoelectrochemical applications, showing good potential for this use.

Nonplanar porphyrins: synthesis, properties, and unique functionalities

Porphyrins are variously substituted tetrapyrrolic macrocycles, with wide-ranging biological and chemical applications derived from metal chelation in the core and the 18π aromatic surface. Under suitable conditions, the porphyrin framework can deform significantly from regular planar shape, owing to steric overload on the porphyrin periphery or steric repulsion in the core, among other structure modulation strategies. Adopting this nonplanar porphyrin architecture allows guest molecules to interact directly with an exposed core, with guest-responsive and photoactive electronic states of the porphyrin allowing energy, information, atom and electron transfer within and between these species. This functionality can be incorporated and tuned by decoration of functional groups and electronic modifications, with individual deformation profiles adapted to specific key sensing and catalysis applications. Nonplanar porphyrins are assisting breakthroughs in molecular recognition, organo- and photoredox catalysis; simultaneously bio-inspired and distinctly synthetic, these molecules offer a new dimension in shape-responsive host-guest chemistry. In this review, we have summarized the synthetic methods and design aspects of nonplanar porphyrin formation, key properties, structure and functionality of the nonplanar aromatic framework, and the scope and utility of this emerging class towards outstanding scientific, industrial and environmental issues.

Effect of the ring size of TMC ligands in controlling C-H bond activation by metal-superoxo species

Metal-superoxo species play a very important role in many metal-mediated catalytic transformation reactions. Their catalytic reactivity is affected by many factors such as the nature of metal ions and ring size of ligands. Herein, for the first time, we report DFT calculations on the electronic structures of a series of metal-superoxo species (M = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) with two ring size ligands, i.e., 13-TMC/14-TMC, and a detailed mechanistic study on the C-H bond activation of cyclohexa-1,4-diene followed by the effect of the ring size of ligands. Our DFT results showed that the electron density at the distal oxygen plays an important role in C-H bond activation. By computing the energetics of C-H bond activation and mapping the potential energy surface, it was found that the initial hydrogen abstraction is the rate-determining step with both TMC rings and all the studied metal-superoxo species. The significant electron density at the cyclohex-1,4-diene carbon indicates that the reaction proceeds via the proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism. By mapping the potential energy surfaces, we found that the 13-TMC ligated superoxo with the anti-isomer are more reactive than the 14-TMC superoxo species except for the iron-superoxo species where the 14-TMC ligated superoxo species is more reactive i.e. smaller ring size TMC is more reactive towards C-H bond activation. This is also supported by the structural correlation, i.e., the greater contraction in the smaller ring results in the metal being pushed out of plane along the z-axis, which reduces the steric hindrance. Thus, the ring size can help in designing catalysts with better efficiency for catalytic reactions.

Oxo(corrolato)vanadium(iv) catalyzed epoxidation: oxo(peroxo)(corrolato)vanadium(v) is the true catalytic species

Oxo(corrolato)vanadium(iv) complexes are highly efficient oxidizers in the presence of H2O2 and KHCO3, and oxo(peroxo)(corrolato)vanadium(v) complexes are the catalytic intermediate.

Selective epoxidation of olefins by vanadylporphyrin [VIVO(TPP)] and electron deficient nonplanar β-octabromovanadylporphyrin [VIVO(TPPBr8)]

Meso-tetraphenylporphyrinatooxidovanadium(IV) [VIVO(TPP)] (1) and 2,3,7,8,12,13, 17,18-octabromo-meso-tetraphenylporphyrinatooxidovanadium(IV) [VIVO(TPPBr[Formula: see text]] (2) were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. 1 and 2 were utilized as efficient catalysts for the selective epoxidation of olefins. Catalyst 2 shows very high catalytic activity (TOF = 8783–13108 h[Formula: see text] as compared to 1 (TOF = 2175–3296 h[Formula: see text]. The catalysts are recyclable, as their recyclability was checked for four cycles and show only minor reduction of their efficiency.

A stable and highly selective metalloporphyrin based framework for the catalytic oxidation of cyclohexene

A new metalloporphyrin framework of molybdenum Mo2O4(C48H28N4O8)·(CH3)2NH·5H2O·2DMF (Mo2TCPP) was synthesized from tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (H4TCPP) and sodium molybdate dihydrate by a hydrothermal method. Mo2TCPP is a 3D network with two sub-units, in which both TCPP ligands and each Mo2 dimer act as four connection nodes. The crystal structure was determined by single crystal analysis and further characterized by FTIR, SEM, EDX, PXRD, XPS and TGA. Here cumene hydrogen peroxide and hydrogen peroxide were used as oxidants to study the catalytic activity of new metalloporphyrins in the oxidation of cyclohexene at different temperatures. The conversion rate of cyclohexene and the selectivity of epoxycyclohexane were both higher than 99%, which was better than the previously published research results. The stability of the catalyst before and after the reaction was further tested for 10 runs without obvious degradation. The catalyst was stable in different solutions such as acidic, water and alkaline. These results shed light on the future development of new catalytic materials based on metalloporphyrin.

Unsymmetrical β-functionalized ‘push–pull’ porphyrins: synthesis and photophysical, electrochemical and nonlinear optical properties

A new family of unsymmetrical β-TPA appended ‘push–pull’ porphyrins has been synthesized in good yield for the first time. They exhibited red shifted broad absorption spectral features with high dipole moments and tunable redox properties.

Reactivity patterns of vanadium(iv/v)-oxo complexes with olefins in the presence of peroxides: a computational study

Vanadium porphyrin complexes are naturally occurring substances found in crude oil and have been shown to have medicinal properties as well. Little is known on their activities with substrates; therefore, we decided to perform a detailed density functional theory study on the properties and reactivities of vanadium(iv)- and vanadium(v)-oxo complexes with a TPPCl8 or 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octachloro-meso-tetraphenylporphyrinato ligand system. In particular, we investigated the reactivity of [VV(O)(TPPCl8)]+ and [VIV(O)(TPPCl8)] with cyclohexene in the presence of H2O2 or HCO4-. The work shows that vanadium(iv)-oxo and vanadium(v)-oxo are sluggish oxidants by themselves and react with olefins slowly. However, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, these metal-oxo species can be transformed into a side-on vanadium-peroxo complex, which reacts with substrates more efficiently. Particularly with anionic axial ligands, the side-on vanadium-peroxo and vanadium-oxo complexes produced epoxides from cyclohexene via small barrier heights. In addition to olefin epoxidation, we investigated aliphatic hydroxylation mechanisms by the same oxidants and some oxidants show efficient and viable cyclohexene hydroxylation mechanisms. The work implies that vanadium-oxo and vanadium-peroxo complexes can react with double bonds through epoxidation, and under certain conditions also undergo hydroxylation, but the overall reactivity is highly dependent on the equatorial ligand, the local environment and the presence or absence of anionic axial ligands.

Unsymmetrical nonplanar 'push-pull' β-octasubstituted porphyrins: facile synthesis, structural, photophysical and electrochemical redox properties

Mixed substitution at the β-position of porphyrins influences their photophysical and electrochemical redox properties. Two new series of asymmetrically mixed β-octasubstituted porphyrins viz. MTPP(Ph)2Br5X (X = NO2 or Br and M = 2H, Co(ii), Ni(ii), Cu(ii), and Zn(ii)) have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. The single crystal X-ray structure of H2TPP(NO2)(Ph)2Br5 showed a nonplanar saddle shape conformation of the macrocyclic core. Furthermore, the fully optimized geometries confirmed the saddle shape conformation of H2TPP(Ph)2Br5X (X = NO2 or Br). Electronic spectra revealed a significant bathochromic shift by appending both electron donor and acceptor substituents at the β-position of the meso-tetraphenylporphyrin skeleton, which reflects the following order H2TPP < H2TPP(NO2) < H2TPP(NO2)(Ph)2 < H2TPP(Ph)2Br6 < H2TPP(NO2)(Ph)2Br5. H2TPP(Ph)2Br5X (X = NO2 or Br) exhibited a significant bathochromic shift (Δλmax = 53-61 nm) in the Soret band and (Δλmax = 90-95 nm) in the longest wavelength Qx(0,0) band as compared to H2TPP. Nonplanar conformations and electron withdrawing β-substituents induce higher protonation and deprotonation constants for H2TPP(NO2)(Ph)2Br5 and H2TPP(Ph)2Br6 as compared to precursor porphyrins viz. H2TPP, H2TPP(NO2) and H2TPP(NO2)(Ph)2. The electronic spectral properties and redox potentials of MTPP(Ph)2Br5X (X = NO2 or Br and M = 2H, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) are affected by β-substituents at the periphery of the porphyrin core. Redox tunability was achieved by appending push-pull substituents at the β-position of the MTPP (M = 2H, CoII, NiII, CuII, and ZnII) skeleton of the macrocycle. CuTPP(Ph)2Br6 and CuTPP(NO2)(Ph)2Br5 exhibited a dramatically reduced HOMO-LUMO gap with a difference of 0.55 V and 0.62 V, respectively as compared to CuTPP due to the push-pull effect of β-substituents and nonplanarity of the porphyrin core.

Vanadyl β-tetrabromoporphyrin: synthesis, crystal structure and its use as an efficient and selective catalyst for olefin epoxidation in aqueous medium

We hereby report the synthesis, characterization and catalytic applications in the epoxidation of alkenes by a vanadyl porphyrin having bulky bromo substituents at the β-positions viz. vanandyltetrabromotetraphenylporphyrin (1). The synthesized porphyrin was characterized by various spectroscopic techniques like UV-visible, FT-IR, EPR, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray analysis. Porphyrin 1 has a nonplanar structure as indicated by its X-ray structure, DFT and electrochemical studies. 1 was analyzed for its catalytic application in the epoxidation of various alkenes. The catalytic reactions were carried out in CH₃CN/H₂O mixture in 3 : 1 (v/v) ratio. 1 displayed good efficiency in terms of mild reaction conditions, lower reaction temperature and minimal catalyst amount consumption. 1 exhibited excellent selectivity, high conversion efficiency and huge TOF (7600–9800 h⁻¹) in a significantly low reaction time of 0.5 h. Catalyst 1 was regenerated at the end of various catalytic cycles making it reusable and industrially important.

We have synthesized β-tetrabromo-meso-tetraphenylporphyrinatooxidovanadium(iv) (VOTPPBr₄) which possesses high thermal stability and nonplanar macrocyclic core. Further, it was utilized for selective epoxidation of olefins in good yields with very high TOF numbers.

Synthesis, spectral and electrochemical redox properties of N-methyl fused nickel(II) porphyrin

[Formula: see text]-methyl fused nickel(II) porphyrin was synthesized by a facile synthetic route in excellent yield. The effect of the electron-donating methyl group on spectral and electrochemical redox properties was analyzed by comparing the electrochemistry with that of its precursors. [Formula: see text]-methylated fused nickel(II) porphyrin exhibited a red-shifted absorption spectrum ([Formula: see text] 6–13 nm) and a 180[Formula: see text]mV anodic shift in the first ring oxidation as well as a 210[Formula: see text]mV shift in reduction with respect to its Ni(II)-fused porphyrin precursor (Ni[Formula: see text]-(NH)TPP). However, the absorption spectral features and redox potentials of N-methyl fused nickel(II) porphyrin are marginally shifted as compared to its immediate precursor, [Formula: see text]-formyl Ni(II)-fused porphyrin. Notably, Ni(II)(N-CH[Formula: see text](CHO)TPP exhibited a third oxidation at 1.51[Formula: see text]mV, corresponding to oxidation of Ni(II) to Ni(III) due to the presence of “push–pull” [Formula: see text] substituents.

Catalytic Applications of Vanadium: A Mechanistic Perspective

The chemistry of vanadium has seen remarkable activity in the past 50 years. In the present review, reactions catalyzed by homogeneous and supported vanadium complexes from 2008 to 2018 are summarized and discussed. Particular attention is given to mechanistic and kinetics studies of vanadium-catalyzed reactions including oxidations of alkanes, alkenes, arenes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and sulfur species, as well as oxidative C-C and C-O bond cleavage, carbon-carbon bond formation, deoxydehydration, haloperoxidase, cyanation, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, ring-opening metathesis polymerization, and oxo/imido heterometathesis. Additionally, insights into heterogeneous vanadium catalysis are provided when parallels can be drawn from the homogeneous literature.

Synthesis and structural, photophysical, electrochemical redox and axial ligation properties of highly electron deficient perchlorometalloporphyrins and selective CN− sensing by Co(ii) complexes

Synthesis and characterization of MTPP(NO₂)Cl₇ have been reported. Zn^II porphyrins exhibited higher Lewis acidity as compared to perbromoporphyrins. Co^II porphyrins were utilized for the selective rapid visual detection of cyanide ions.

Biomimetic oxidation of cyclic and linear alkanes: high alcohol selectivity promoted by a novel manganese porphyrin catalyst

A novel β-brominated Mn-porphyrin acts as a good catalyst for alkane (cyclohexane, adamantine and n-hexane) oxidation in biomimetic systems.
