Abstract
Cadmium (Cd)-enriched adsorbents wastes possess great environmental risk due to their large-scale accumulation and toxicity in the natural environment. Recycling spent Cd-enriched adsorbents into efficient catalysts for advanced applications could address the environmental issues and attain the carbon neutral goal. Herein, a facile strategy is developed for the first time to reutilize the alkali lignin (AL)-derived biochar (ALB) absorbed with Cd into cadmium sulphide (CdS)/C composite for the efficient methylene blue (MB) removal. The ALB is initially treated with Cd-containing solution, then the recycling ALB samples with adsorbed Cd are converted to the final CdS/C composite using NaS2 as the sulphurizing reagent for vulcanization reaction. The optimal ALB400 demonstrates a high adsorption capacity of 576.0 mg g-1 for Cd removal. Then the converted CdS/C composite shows an efficient MB removal efficiency of 94%. The photodegradation mechanism is mainly attributed to carbon components in the CdS/C composite as electron acceptor promoting the separation of photoelectrons/holes and slowing down the abrasion of CdS particles. The enhanced charge transfer and contact between the carrier and the active site thus improves the removal performance and reusability. This work not only develops a method for removing Cd from wastewater effectively and achieving the waste resource utilization but also further offers a significant guidance to use other kinds of spent heavy metal removal adsorbents for the construction of low-cost and high value-added functional materials.

Abstract
This study constructed an up-flow anaerobic column reactor fed with synthetic sulfate-rich cadmium (Cd(II))-bearing wastewater, for investigating its Cd(II) removal performance and mechanism. Long-term experiment results manifest that introducing Cd(II) into influent led to an enhanced sulfate removal but did not increase the effluent sulfide concentration, implying the CdS formation. When influent Cd(II) concentration was shifted from 50 to 100 mg/L, the median Cd(II) removal rate was increased from 13.6 to 32.2 mg/(L·d). Batch tests indicate that the uptake and sequestration function of anaerobes merely led to a small portion of Cd(II) removal. A majority of aqueous Cd(II) (86.3%) was eliminated by precipitation reactions. The generated precipitates were found to be dominantly presented in carbonate, Fe-Mn oxide, sulfide bound and residue forms, which account for 92.6-93.9% of total Cd content of sludge obtained at diverse operation phases. The crystallographic CdS (i.e., residue fraction) particles have nano-scale sizes, and the relatively high atomic ratio of S to Cd was likely due to the adsorption/deposition of other sulfides. The dominant sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were recognized as Desulfurella, Desulforhabdus and Desulfovibrio, and the primary competitor with them for substrate utilization were identified to be methanogens.

Abstract
In this work, the CdS quantum dots (QDs) decorated Bi2MoO6/Bi2Mo3O12 (BMO) heterojunction photocatalyst (C/BMO) has been successfully synthesized using a facile two-step hydrothermal method. The as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR, XPS, FESEM, TEM, UV-vis DRS, PL and photoelectrochemical measurements to investigate the effects of CdS(QDs) and BMO heterojunction on the structure, morphology, optical and charge carrier transmission characteristics of the photocatalysts. Narrow band gap and superior catalytic activities were found in C/BMO as compared with pure BMO. Moreover, the C/BMO photocatalyst containing twice CdS content (2-C/BMO) exhibits even higher photocatalytic activity and stability. After exposure to visible light for 30 min, the degradation rate of Rhodamine B (RhB), Methylene blue (MB) and Ofloxacin (OFX) by 2-C/BMO reached 95%, 92% and 76%, respectively. Radicals scavenging experiments and electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR) investigations indicated that the superoxide radical anions (∙O2- ), hole (h+) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are the dominating active species in the photodegradation processes. ∙O2- and h+ are the key factors in the degradation of RhB and OFX solutions, and •OH is the major determinant in removal of MB. The process and photocatalytic mechanism on 2-C/BMO was discussed. Well absorption of visible light, effective separation of photoelectron-hole pairs and the transportation of photogenerated carriers at the interfaces of ternary semiconductor heterojunction are suggested as the key factors to enhance the photocatalytic performance of the photocatalysts.

Abstract
Particulate photocatalysts developed for the solar energy-driven reduction of the greenhouse gas CO2 have a small product range and low specificity. Hybrid photosynthesis expands the number of products with photocatalysts harvesting sunlight and transferring charges to microbes harboring versatile metabolisms for bioproduction. Besides CO2, abiotic photocatalysts have been employed to increase microbial production yields of reduced compounds from organic carbon substrates. Most single-reactor hybrid photosynthesis systems comprise CdS assembled in situ by microbial activity. This approach limits optimization of the morphology, crystal structure, and crystallinity of CdS for higher performance, which is usually done via synthesis methods incompatible with life. Here, shape and activity optimized CdS nanorods were hydrothermally produced and subsequently applied to Cupriavidus necator for the heterotrophic and autotrophic production of the bioplastic polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). C. necator with CdS NR under light produced 1.5 times more PHB when compared to the same bacterium with suboptimal commercially-available CdS. Illuminated C. necator with CdS NR synthesized 1.41 g PHB from fructose over 120 h and 28 mg PHB from CO2 over 48 h. Interestingly, the beneficial effect of CdS NR was specific to C. necator as the metabolism of other microbes often employed for bioproduction including yeast and bacteria was negatively impacted. These results demonstrate that hybrid photosynthesis is more productive when the photocatalyst characteristics are optimized via a separated synthesis process prior to being coupled with microbes. Furthermore, bioproduction improvement by CdS-based photocatalyst requires specific microbial species highlighting the importance of screening efforts for the development of performant hybrid photosynthesis.

Abstract
Encapsulating CdS quantum dots (QDs) into zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) can offer several advantages for photocatalysis. Various types of capping agents have been used to encapsulate QDs into ZIF-8 nanopores. An effective method for encapsulating CdS QDs into ZIF-8 is to use 2-mercaptoimidazole as the capping agent. This is because 2-mercaptoimidazole is similar to the imidazolate ligands of ZIFs and can used for capping active species with simultaneous encapsulation during the crystal growth of ZIF-8. Compared to other widely used capping agents such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), using 2-mercaptoimidazole for encapsulating CdS QDs into ZIF-8 revealed photocatalytic effects along with the molecular sieving effect when using differently sized molecular redox mediators such as methyl viologen (MV2+) and diquat (DQ2+).

Abstract
The sulfur ions generated during the microbial treatment of sulfate wastewater could cause secondary pollution problem, however, the application of the biomineralization technique could convert sulfur ions into sulfide nanocomposites with diverse properties. This study constructed a multi-stage process for sulfate wastewater treatment and CdS nanocomposites (CdS-NCs) recovery by using biomineralization, which simultaneously achieved the removal of pollutants and recovery of functional nanocomposites. In this process, about 97% of the sulfate could be removed, and the CdS-NCs with a diameter of 16.0-20.2 nm were collected at different pHs. The results of FTIR and Raman proved that the biomacromolecules derived from microorganisms participated in the formation of CdS-NCs. The Mott-Schottky curve suggested that the CdS-NCs belonged to n-type semiconductors with the energy gap of 2.29-2.38 eV and could be applied as the photocatalyst, and up to 78.2% of 200 mg/L tetracycline was photodegraded catalytically by CdS-NCs obtained at pH 6.5. In the application of CdS-NCs as anodes of lithium-ion batteries, all the batteries assembled by CdS-NCs exhibited a very strong cycle performance of more than 500 cycles. This research not only effectively recovered nanocomposites with great application potential from sulfate wastewater but also provided a perspective for the utilization of recovered resources.

Abstract
The spectral and photochemical properties of hybrid organic-inorganic nanosystems (HNSs) were investigated. HNS consisted of CdS quantum dots (QDs) functionalized with ligands containing the isothiouronium anchor group linked by a polymethylene chain with photochromic merocyanine (MC). The HNS synthesis was carried out via a microwave-assisted one-pot technique. Energy transfer from the QDs to MC in the HNS was observed and resulted in QD fluorescence quenching and MC sensitization. Compared to the free MC, trans-cis photoisomerization of MC in the HNS was suppressed and its photodestruction was accelerated. In addition, upon HNS photolysis by visible light with energy higher than the threshold, the photosensitized destruction of the QDs (which did not absorb the applied light) occurred. The observed effects were proposed to be caused by MC adsorption on QDs surface, which leads to the restriction of the MC photoisomerization and population of the surface electron trap states of the QDs.
