Zinc Ion-Based Switch-on Fluorescence-Sensing Probes for the Detection of Tetracycline

Tetracycline (TC) is an antibiotic that has been widely used in the animal husbandry. Thus, TC residues may be found in animal products. Developing simple and sensitive methods for rapid screening of TC in complex samples is of great importance. Herein, we demonstrate a fluorescence-sensing method using Zn²⁺ as sensing probes for the detection of TC. Although TC can emit fluorescence under the excitation of ultraviolet light, its fluorescence is weak because of dynamic intramolecular rotations, leading to the dissipation of excitation energy. With the addition of Zn²⁺ prepared in tris(hydroxymethyl)amino-methane (Tris), TC can coordinate with Zn²⁺ in the Zn²⁺-Tris conjugates to form Tris-Zn²⁺-TC complexes. Therefore, the intramolecular motions of TC are restricted to reduce nonradiative decay, resulting in the enhancement of TC fluorescence. Aggregation-induced emission effects also play a role in the enhancement of TC fluorescence. Our results show that the linear dynamic range for the detection of TC is 15-300 nM. Moreover, the limit of detection was ~7 nM. The feasibility of using the developed method for determination of the concentration of TC in a complex chicken broth sample is also demonstrated in this work.

Magnetic Fluorescent Quantum Dots Nanocomposites in Food Contaminants Analysis: Current Challenges and Opportunities

The presence of food contaminants can cause foodborne illnesses, posing a severe threat to human health. Therefore, a rapid, sensitive, and convenient method for monitoring food contaminants is eagerly needed. The complex matrix interferences of food samples and poor performance of existing sensing probes bring significant challenges to improving detection performances. Nanocomposites with multifunctional features provide a solution to these problems. The combination of the superior characteristics of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and quantum dots (QDs) to fabricate magnetic fluorescent quantum dots (MNPs@QDs) nanocomposites are regarded as an ideal multifunctional probe for food contaminants analysis. The high-efficiency pretreatment and rapid fluorescence detection are concurrently integrated into one sensing platform using MNPs@QDs nanocomposites. In this review, the contemporary synthetic strategies to fabricate MNPs@QDs, including hetero-crystalline growth, template embedding, layer-by-layer assembly, microemulsion technique, and one-pot method, are described in detail, and their advantages and limitations are discussed. The recent advances of MNPs@QDs nanocomposites in detecting metal ions, foodborne pathogens, toxins, pesticides, antibiotics, and illegal additives are comprehensively introduced from the perspectives of modes and detection performances. The review ends with current challenges and opportunities in practical applications and prospects in food contaminants analysis, aiming to promote the enthusiasm for multifunctional sensing platform research.

Magnetic Fluorescence Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Based on FeOx/ZnS Nanocomposites for Highly Selective Sensing of Bisphenol A

In this study, magnetic fluorescence molecularly imprinted polymers were fabricated and used for the selective separation and fluorescence sensing of trace bisphenol A (BPA) in environmental water samples. The carboxyl-functionalized FeO_x magnetic nanoparticles were conjugated with mercaptoethylamine-capped Mn²⁺ doped ZnS quantum dots to prepare magnetic FeO_x and ZnS quantum dot nanoparticles (FeO_x/ZnS NPs). Additionally, molecular imprinting on the FeO_x/ZnS NPs was employed to synthesize core-shell molecularly imprinted polymers. The resulting nanoparticles were well characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, vibrating sample magnetometer and fluorescence spectra, and the adsorption behavior was investigated. Binding experiments showed that the molecularly imprinted FeO_X/ZnS NPs (FeO_x/ZnS@MIPs) exhibited rapid fluorescent and magnetic responses, and high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of bisphenol A (BPA). The maximum adsorption capacity of FeO_x/ZnS@MIPs was 50.92 mg·g^-1 with an imprinting factor of 11.19. Under optimal conditions, the constructed fluorescence magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers presented good linearity from 0 to 80 ng mL^-1 with a detection limit of 0.3626 ng mL^-1 for BPA. Moreover, the proposed fluorescence magnetic polymers were successfully applied to on-site magnetic separation and real-time fluorescence analysis of target molecule in real samples.

Fluorometric determination of quercetin by using graphitic carbon nitride nanoparticles modified with a molecularly imprinted polymer

The authors describe a fluorescent probe for sensitive and selective determination of quercetin, an indicator for the freshness of drinks. The probe consists of silica ball encapsulated graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) modified with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). It was synthesized via reverse microemulsion. The resulting MIP@g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite was characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction. Quercetin quenches the fluorescence of the MIP@g-C₃N₄ probe. The effect was used to quantify quercetin in grape juice, tea juice, black tea, and red wine by fluorometry (λ_exc = 350 nm, λ_em = 460 nm). Response is linear in the 10-1000 ng mL^-1 quercetin concentration range. The detection limit is 2.5 ng mL^-1, recoveries range between 90.7 and 94.1%, and relative standard deviations are between 2.1 and 5.5%. Fluorescence Probe Based on an Amino-Functionalized Fluorescent Magnetic Nanocomposite for Detection of Folic Acid in Serum

A new fluorescence probe constructed with a multifunctional nanocomposite, Fe₃O₄-ZnS:Mn²⁺/SiO₂-NH₂, was successfully synthesized and then used to detect folic acid in real serum samples. The nanocomposite was characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and physical property measurement system. With the addition of analyte, the Fe₃O₄-ZnS:Mn²⁺/SiO₂-NH₂ composite and folic acid formed a new complex because cross-linking of the amino and carboxyl groups participated in the condensation reaction. Then, the energy of quantum dots was transferred to the complex and led to quenching of the fluorescence. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity decreased significantly as the concentration of folic acid increased, and the fluorescence quenching ratio F₀/F was related to the folic acid concentration in the range from 0.1 to 5 μg mL^-1. This method was used for detecting folic acid in real serum samples and gave recoveries in the range of 89.0%-96.0%, with relative standard deviations of 1.2%-3.9%. The detection limit was 9.6 ng mL^-1 (S/N = 3). These satisfactory and simple results showed the great potential of this fluorescence probe in the field of pharmaceutical analysis.
