Highly Emissive 9-Borafluorene Derivatives: Synthesis, Photophysical Properties and Device Fabrication

A series of 9-borafluorene derivatives, functionalised with electron-donating groups, have been prepared. Some of these 9-borafluorene compounds exhibit strong yellowish emission in solution and in the solid state with relatively high quantum yields (up to 73.6 % for FMesB-Cz as a neat film). The results suggest that the highly twisted donor groups suppress charge transfer, but the intrinsic photophysical properties of the 9-borafluorene systems remain. The new compounds showed enhanced stability towards the atmosphere, and exhibited excellent thermal stability, revealing their potential for application in materials science. Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices were fabricated with two of the highly emissive compounds, and they exhibited strong yellow-greenish electroluminescence, with a maximum luminance intensity of >22 000 cd m-2 . These are the first two examples of 9-borafluorene derivatives being used as light-emitting materials in OLED devices, and they have enabled us to achieve a balance between maintaining their intrinsic properties while improving their stability.

Synthesis of Trifluoromethylated Quinoxaline-Based Polymers for Photovoltaic Applications

A series of quinoxaline-based conjugated polymers, in which the electron-donating benzodithiophene (BDT) unit is linked to the electron-accepting 6,7-difluorinated quinoxaline (DFQ) derivatives by a thiophene bridge, is synthesized. To investigate their effects on the intrinsic properties of polymers, strong electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl (CF3 ) groups were incorporated into the meta-position of the phenyl ring at the 2,3-positions of the DFQ unit of the reference polymer, labelled PEhB-FQx, to yield the target polymer PEhB-FQxCF3. In addition, the 2-ethylhexyloxy substituents on the BDT donor in PEhB-FQxCF3 are changed to the more planar 2-ethylhexyl thiophene units to produce another target polymer PThB-FQxCF3. Owing to the significant contributions of the CF3 moiety, PEhB-FQxCF3 exhibits quite discernible optical and electrochemical properties along with significant enhancement in photovoltaic performances compared to the reference polymer PEhB-FQx. Furthermore, the incorporation of the alkylthienyl side chains on the BDT moiety confers on the resultant PThB-FQxCF3 to possess the maximum power conversion efficiency of 7.26% with an open circuit voltage of 0.88 V, short-circuit current density of 12.20 mA cm-2 , and fill factor of 67.80%.

Trifluoromethyl-Substituted Large Band-Gap Polytriphenylamines for Polymer Solar Cells with High Open-Circuit Voltages

Two large band-gap polymers (PTPACF and PTPA2CF) based on polytriphenylamine derivatives with the introduction of electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl groups were designed and prepared by Suzuki polycondensation reaction. The chemical structures, thermal, optical and electrochemical properties were characterized in detail. From the UV-visible absorption spectra, the PTPACF and PTPA2CF showed the optical band gaps of 2.01 and 2.07 eV, respectively. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement displayed the deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of -5.33 and -5.38 eV for PTPACF and PTPA2CF, respectively. The hole mobilities, determined by field-effect transistor characterization, were 2.5 × 10-3 and 1.1 × 10-3 cm² V-1 S-1 for PTPACF and PTPA2CF, respectively. The polymer solar cells (PSCs) were tested under the conventional device structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer:PC71BM/PFN/Al. All of the PSCs showed the high open circuit voltages (Vocs) with the values approaching 1 V. The PTPACF and PTPA2CF based PSCs gave the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 3.24% and 2.40%, respectively. Hence, it is a reliable methodology to develop high-performance large band-gap polymer donors with high Vocs through the feasible side-chain modification.
