The σ+π dual aromaticity of typical bi-tetrazole ring molecule TKX-50

Two complexes of dihydroxylammonium 5,5'-bistetrazole-1,1'-diolate (TKX-50) were employed to evaluate the aromaticity of their tetrazole rings via deep analysis such as the electronic structure, the ZZ component of the natural chemical shielding tensor (NICSZZ) and component orbitals, localized orbital locator purely contributed by σ-orbitals (LOL-σ) and localized orbital locator purely contributed by π-orbitals (LOL-π), the anisotropy of the induced current density (AICD) and the ZZ component of iso-chemical shielding surface (ICSSZZ) of these tetrazole rings thereof. The conclusion shows: that all tetrazole rings and bi-tetrazole rings in complexes have strong σ and a comparable strength π double aromaticity; all these magnetic shields almost symmetrically increase from the central axis to the tetrazole ring atoms; tetrazole rings in complex II show a little stronger dual aromaticity than that in complex I mainly due to the different orientation of the fragment 2 encompassing two hydroxylamine groups resulting in different effects on the contributions of σ orbitals and π orbitals to total aromaticity of tetrazole rings thereof; the difference in aromaticity is fundamentally caused by the atoms O with stronger electron-withdrawing than atom N in fragment 2 interact with bi-tetrazole ring through O in complex I but through N in complex II.

Neutral binary chalcogen-nitrogen and ternary S,N,P molecules: new structures, bonding insights and potential applications

Early theoretical and experimental investigations of inorganic sulfur-nitrogen compounds were dominated by (a) assessments of the purported aromatic character of cyclic, binary S,N molecules and ions, (b) the unpredictable reactions of the fascinating cage compound S4N4, and (c) the unique structure and properties of the conducting polymer (SN)x. In the last few years, in addition to unexpected developments in the chemistry of well-known sulfur nitrides, the emphasis of these studies has changed to include nitrogen-rich species formed under high pressures, as well as the selenium analogues of well-known S,N compounds. Novel applications have been established or predicted for many binary S/Se,N molecules, including their use for fingerprint detection, in optoelectronic devices, as high energy-density compounds or as hydrogen-storage materials. The purpose of this perspective is to evaluate critically these new aspects of the chemistry of neutral, binary chalcogen-nitrogen molecules and to suggest experimental approaches to the synthesis of target compounds. Recently identified ternary S,N,P compounds will also be considered in light of their isoelectronic relationship with binary S,N cations.

Planar ten-membered 10-π-electron aromatic (CH)5(XH)5 {X = Ge, Sn} systems

Being monocyclic planar, benzene retains 6π Hückel aromatic backbone. However, for larger analogues, the repulsion between vicinal C-H bonds makes them nonplanar, as for [10]-annulene. Thus, on this basis, a planar 10-π-aromatic C₁₀H₁₀ is unreachable. A detailed structural comparison among the C₃H₃⁺, C₄H₄²⁺, C₅H₅^-, C₆H₆, C₇H₇⁺, C₈H₈²⁺, C₉H₉^-, and C₁₀H₁₀ systems supports that the repulsion between vicinal C-H bonds is the primary reason for the loss of planarity, despite the favorable aromatic electron count. In this respect, here we have discussed ten-membered monocyclic planar 10-π-aromatic, (CH)₅(XH)₅ {X = Si, Ge, Sn} systems, modeled by using DFT. From NBO analysis and the overall magnetic behavior it is shown that (CH)₅(GeH)₅, (CH)₅(SnH)₅ molecules are promising planar 10-π-aromatic system. Thus, such species represent plausible Hückel aromatic rings retaining a ten-membered backbone as discussed here, which may lead to the characterization of novel species expanding the chemistry of larger aromatic rings.
