Abstract
The needless use of tetracyclines (TCs) in foodstuffs is a huge health concern in low- and middle-income and Arab countries. Herein, a sensitive and faster monitoring system for H2O2 and TCs is proposed, utilizing the large surface-to-volume ratio of a non-spherical gold nanoparticle/black phosphorus nanocomposite (BP-nsAu NPs) for the first time. BP-nsAu NPs were synthesized through a single-step method that presented nanozymatic activity through 3,3',5,5'-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation while H2O2 was present and obeyed the Michaelis-Menten equation. The nanozymatic activity of the BP-nsAu NPs was enhanced 12-fold and their detection time was decreased 83-fold compared to conventional nanozymatic reactions. The proposed method enabled us to quantify H2O2 with a limit of detection (LOD) value of 60 nM. Moreover, target-specific aptamer-conjugated BP-nsAu NPs helped us detect TCs with an LOD value of 90 nM. The present strategy provides a proficient route for low-level TC monitoring in real samples.

Abstract
A one-step cobaltous chloride (CoCl2) molten salt method was employed to prepare multilayer MXene-Ti3C2/Co materials with further ultrasonic treatment to acquire single-layer MXene-Ti3C2/Co nanosheets (NSs). MXene-Ti3C2/Co NSs were characterized, and their enzyme-like activities were investigated. Under the catalysis of MXene-Ti3C2/Co NSs, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) could be oxidized by H2O2, with the color changing from colorless to blue. The affinity of MXene-Ti3C2/Co NSs to H2O2 and TMB was better than that of nanozymes reported in previous studies. The MXene-Ti3C2/Co NSs were used for the colorimetric determination of H2O2/glucose, with limits of detection (LODs) of 0.033 mM and 1.7 μM, respectively. MXene-Ti3C2/Co NSs embedded in sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel were used to construct a sensor platform. The digital pictures combined with a smartphone-installed app (color recognizer) could be used to analyze RGB values for colorimetric detection of glucose in beverages. This point-of-care testing platform has the advantages of cost-effectiveness and good transferability, with the potential to realize quick, intelligent and on-site detection.

Abstract
Developing artificial nanoparticles with peroxidase-like activity are being attracted great interests because their catalytic activity are not easy to lose under harsh conditions compared with natural enzymes. In this work, the N-doped carbon dots (CDs) were prepared, and it was found that the N-doped CDs showed high peroxidase-like catalytic activity towards the reaction system of hydrogen peroxide - 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The catalytic mechanism of the N-doped CDs was explored by usingelectron spin resonance (ESR) spectra, cyclic voltammetry (CV) method and simulation of density functional theory calculation. This work can offer a new feasible method for synthesizing N-doped CQDs used as artificial peroxidases in biological and environment applications.

Abstract
Metal nanozymes hold promise for chemical and biological applications, and their implementation relies on high catalytic efficiency and stability. Using the metal-organic framework as an ideal carrier for well-dispersed ultra-small metal nanoparticles (NPs) is beneficial for improving the catalytic efficiency of nanozymes. In this study, a zirconium-based metal organic framework (UiO-66) with good chemical stability and high porosity was synthesized and used to construct Pt/UiO-66 nanocomposites. The percentage of Pt in UiO-66 can be tuned easily by adjusting the feeding amount of PtCl4 2-. Because of the confinement effect of mesopores, the Pt particles with an average diameter of 3.8 nm are formed and dispersed throughout the pores of the UiO-66 particle. The Pt/UiO-66 composites show efficient oxidase- and peroxidase-like activity. Both the oxidase- and peroxidase-like activities are dependent on the Pt percentage. Pt/UiO-66-6% exhibits enhanced peroxidase-like activity, ∼3.9 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C with 10 wt % Pt. We propose that the construction of Pt/UiO-66 increased the utilization efficiency and stability of Pt NPs and provided more active sites for catalytic reactions. Using the peroxidase-like activity of Pt/UiO-66, a colorimetric method that can be used for actual blood glucose detection was developed for the specific detection of glucose with a limit of detection of 0.033 mM.

Abstract
Novel hierarchical CuNiAl layered double hydroxide (CuNiAl LDH) nanotubes were prepared with in situ transformation of Al2O3 produced using the atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. Based on the characterizations using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FT-IR spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), CuNiAl LDH displays a typical nanotube-like structure consisting of uniform ultrathin nanoflakes. It is also confirmed that nitrate precursors play a crucial role in the formation of the LDH hierarchical structure. The unique hierarchical tube-like structure for CuNiAl LDH can supply more active sites and higher surface areas, leading to outstanding peroxidase mimicking property. The kinetic analyses indicate that the catalytic behavior of CuNiAl LDH follows classic Michaelis-Menten models and the affinity of CuNiAl LDH to the substrate is significantly higher than horseradish peroxidase. A simple and label-free method was developed for the colorimetric detection of glucose. As low as 2.9 μM of glucose can be detected with a broad linear range from 10 to 200 μM. The established method is also proved to be suitable for glucose detection in juice samples.

Abstract
The International Agency for Research cancer (IARC) has classified nitrite in Group 2A of probable carcinogens to human. Herein, we report on the rapid and selective colorimetric detection of nitrite using a chemically modified gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-cerium oxide (CeO2) NP-anchored graphene oxide (GO) hybrid nanozyme in a catalytic colorimetric assay where nitrite acts as the main oxidant/target analyte and 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as the substrate. CeO2 NPs and GO were synthesized separately and incorporated in-situ, in a synthetic solution involving the chemical reduction of Au salt to AuNPs. The chemical modification process aided the adsorption of CeO2 NPs and AuNPs on GO nanosheets, yielding a highly catalytic AuNP-CeO2 NP@GO nanohybrid material. Under optimum experimental conditions, a novel colorimetric assay for nitrite recognition was constructed in which AuNP-CeO2 NP@GO hybrid nanozyme catalysed the oxidation of TMB in the presence of nitrite prepared in a 2-(n-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid-2-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]-2-(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol-tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane acetate (MES-BIS-TRIS-Trisma Ac)-citric acid buffer solution, pH 2. Nitrite was quantitatively detected in a concentration dependent manner from 100 μM to 5000 μM with a correlation coefficient of 0.9961 and a limit of detection of 4.6 μM. Selective detection of nitrite was confirmed by the generation of a unique green colour reaction upon nitrite interaction in the AuNP-CeO2 NP@GO hybrid nanozyme redox cycle with TMB. None of the several tested metal ions and including H2O2 yielded a positive colour response, thus demonstrating the superior selectivity of the catalytic colorimetric assay for nitrite recognition. The AuNP-CeO2 NP@GO hybrid nanozyme catalytic colorimetric assay was successfully applied in the detection of nitrite in tap water.

Abstract
The work presents a novel glucose oxidase@Cu-hemin metal-organic frameworks (GOD@ Cu-hemin MOFs) with a ball-flower structure as bienzymatic catalysts for detection of glucose. The GOD@Cu-hemin MOFs exhibits great stability as compared with free horseradish peroxidase and GOD toward harsh conditions because the ball-flower-like shell of Cu-hemin MOF effectively protects from GOD. Thus, the GOD@Cu-Hemin MOFs can be used in external harsh conditions such as high temperature and acid/base. The GOD@Cu-hemin MOFs is capable of sensitive and selective detection of glucose via peroxidase-like of Cu-hemin MOFs and GOD by using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a substrate. Under the existence of glucose, O2 is reduced into H2O2 via GOD@Cu-hemin MOFs. The produced H2O2 as well as Cu-hemin MOFs oxidize TMB into blue oxTMB which shows UV-Vis absorbance at 652. The absorption intensity of oxTMB linearly increases with the increasing concentration of glucose from 0.01 to 1.0 mM with detection limit of 2.8 μM. An integrated agarose hydrogel film (Aga/GOD@Cu-hemin MOF/TMB) sensor is rationally designed for colorimetric detection of glucose. The sensor displays a response range of 30 μM-0.8 mM with a detection limit of 0.01 mM. The result indicates that the Cu-hemin MOFs are an ideal carrier for the encapsulation of enzymes.

Abstract
A label-free electrochemical biosensor based on the triplex DNA-templated Ag/Pt bimetallic nanoclusters (triplex-Ag/PtNCs) and locked nucleic acid (LNA) modified X-shaped DNA probe was developed for the detection of single-nucleotide variant (SNV) related to β-thalassemia. Firstly, using triplex DNA as template, a site-specific and homogeneous Ag/PtNCs was prepared, which can effectively catalyze the 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine-H2O2 system and thus be employed as a signal reporter in the field of electrochemical biosensor. Secondly, the LNA modified X-shaped probes were assembled on gold electrode surface, which can only be dissociated in the presence of target, leading to the hybridization with triplex-Ag/PtNCs and significant increase of current signal. In this way, the detection limit for SNV of β-thalassemia was 0.8 fM with variant allele frequency (VAF) as low as 0.0001%.

Abstract
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been demonstrated to serve as effective nanomaterial-based enzyme mimetics (nanozymes) for a number of enzymatic reactions under mild conditions. The intrinsic glucose oxidase and peroxidase activities of single AuNPs and Ag-Au nanohybrids, respectively, were investigated by single NP collision electrochemical measurements. A significantly high turnover number of nanozymes was obtained from individual catalytic events compared with the results from the classical, ensemble-averaged measurements. The unusual enhancement of catalytic activity of single nanozymes is believed to originate from the high accessible surface area of monodispersed NPs and the high activities of carbon-supported NPs during single-particle collision at a carbon ultramicroelectrode. This work introduces a new method for the precise characterization of the intrinsic catalytic activities of nanozymes, giving further insights to the design of high-efficiency nanomaterial catalysts.

Abstract
Interest is growing in the development of artificial enzymes to overcome the drawbacks of natural enzymes. Herein, we have synthesized nitrogen-sulphur dual-doped carbon quantum dots (NS-CQDs) via a one-step hydrothermal method; the NS-CQDs possess excellent optical properties and a high fluorescent quantum yield (46%). Significantly, the NS-CQDs exhibited peroxidase mimetic enzyme activity without support from metals or polymeric materials and efficiently catalyzed the oxidation of peroxidase substrate 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2 to produce a blue solution with an absorption maximum at 652 nm. Mechanistic studies suggest that the small size and high electron density of NS-CQDs play vital roles and accelerate the reduction of H2O2 to generate ˙OH radical, which facilitates the oxidation of TMB. The catalytic activity is based on Michaelis-Menten kinetic behavior, and steady state kinetic analysis suggests that the NS-CQDs exhibit a higher affinity for H2O2 than TMB, similar to the natural enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Moreover, the catalytic pathway follows a ping-pong mechanism. Therefore, these findings offer a worthy platform for colorimetric detection of H2O2 in a linear range of 0.02 mM to 0.1 mM with a limit of detection of 0.004 mM. Interestingly, the blue colour of oxidized TMB showed excellent selectivity over non-thiolate biological molecules, especially amino acids, and glutathione can be detected up to 0.07 μM via colorimetric and fluorimetric assays. Additionally, this system showed excellent recovery (96.0-108.3%) of GSH from human blood serum. Thus, the proposed sensing system is simple, convenient, and straightforward and can be potentially applied for real time monitoring of H2O2 and glutathione in biological samples.

Abstract
Phosphorus ester hydrolysis is one of the key chemical processes in biological systems, including signaling, free-energy transaction, protein synthesis, and maintaining the integrity of genetic material. Hydrolysis of this otherwise kinetically stable phosphoester and/or phosphoanhydride bond is induced by enzymes such as purple acid phosphatase. Here, I report that, as in previously reported aged inorganic iron ion solutions, the iron oxide nanoparticles in the solution, which are trapped in a dialysis membrane tube filled with the various iron oxides, significantly promote the hydrolysis of the various phosphate esters, including the inorganic polyphosphates, with enzyme-like kinetics. This observation, along with those of recent studies of iron oxide, vanadium pentoxide, and molybdenum trioxide nanoparticles that behave as mimics of peroxidase, bromoperoxidase, and sulfite oxidase, respectively, indicates that the oxo-metal bond in the oxide nanoparticles is critical for the function of these corresponding natural metalloproteins. These inorganic biocatalysts challenge the traditional concept of replicator-first scenarios and support the metabolism-first hypothesis. As biocatalysts, these inorganic nanoparticles with enzyme-like activity may work in natural terrestrial environments and likely were at work in early Earth environments as well. They may have played an important role in the C, H, O, S, and P metabolic pathway with regard to the emergence and early evolution of life. Unveiling the role of ATP in amplification of intrinsic peroxidase-like activity of gold nanoparticles. 3 Biotech 2018; 8:67. Abstract
Peroxidase enzyme-like activity of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is currently being investigated for the potential application in the several realms of biomedicines. However, little is explored about the peroxidase activity of AuNPs decorated with different surface charges. It is well-documented that the catalytic activity and the interaction with mammalian cells are significantly different among AuNPs carrying different surface charges. We have recently reported that ATP enhances the peroxidase-like activity of AuNPs and iron oxide nanoparticles. However, a comprehensive and systematic study to reveal the role of surface charge on nanoparticles peroxidase-like activity has not been studied. In this work, we have shown that AuNPs coated with PEG (PEG AuNPs), citrate (citrate AuNPs) or CTAB (CTAB AuNPs) exhibit varying peroxidase-like activity and the boosting effect imparted by ATP was also different. We found that the peroxidase-like activity of PEG AuNPs and citrate AuNPs is dependent on hydroxyl radical formation, whereas CTAB AuNPs did not show any significant activity under the same experimental conditions. We also studied the boosting effect of ATP on the peroxidase-like activity of PEG and citrate AuNPs. Although the use of ATP resulted in enhanced peroxidase-like activity; however, contrary to the expectation, it did not facilitate the enhanced production of hydroxyl radical. In further studies, we found that the likely mechanism of boosting effect by ATP is the stabilization of oxidized TMB after peroxidase reaction. ATP imparts stabilization to the oxidized TMB produced due to PEG AuNPs, citrate AuNPs as well as HRP.

Abstract
The authors have discovered that vanadium disulfide (VS2) nanosheets, synthesized by a hydrothermal method, exert stable peroxidase-like activity. The catalytic activity, with H2O2 as a cosubstrate, follows Michaelis-Menten kinetics and varies with temperature, pH value and H2O2 concentration. Two-dimensional VS2 sheets acting as peroxidase (POx) mimics can replace horseradish peroxidase due to their availability, robustness, and reusability. The POx-like activity of VS2 sheets was exploited to design a colorimetric glucose assay by using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine as a substrate and by working at an analytical wavelength of 652 nm. The assay covers the 5 to 250 μM glucose concentration range with a 1.5 μM detection limit. It was applied to the analysis of glucose in fruit juice. In our perception, the peroxidase-like nanozyme out of the family of transition metal dichalcogenides presented here has a wide scope in that it may stimulate promising biocatalytic applications in biotechnology and analytical chemistry. Graphical abstract Layered VS2 nanosheets were prepared via hydrothermal synthesis and are shown to exert superior peroxidase-mimicking activity. Using these POx nano-mimics, a sensitive colorimetric assay for glucose was developed and applied to fruit juice analysis. This work unlocks the access of VS2 to biocatalysis and bioassays.

Abstract
A sensitive turn-on luminescent sensor for H2O2 based on the silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-mediated quenching of an luminescent Ir(III) complex (Ir-1) has been designed. In the absence of H2O2, the luminescence intensity of Ir-1 can be quenched by AgNPs via non-radiative energy transfer. However, H2O2 can oxidize AgNPs to soluble Ag+ cations, which restores the luminescence of Ir-1. The sensing platform displayed a sensitive response to H2O2 in the range of 0-17 μM, with a detection limit of 0.3 μM. Importantly, the probe was successfully applied to monitor intracellular H2O2 in living cells, and it also showed high selectivity for H2O2 over other interfering substances.

Abstract
A novel one-pot strategy is proposed to fabricate 3D porous graphene (3D GN) decorated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) by using hemin as iron source. During the process, graphene oxide was simultaneously reduced and self-assembled to form 3D graphene hydrogel while Fe3O4 NPs synthesized from hemin distributed uniformly on 3D GN. The preparation process is simple, facile, economical, and green. The obtained freeze-dried product (3D GH-5) exhibits outstanding peroxidase-like activity. Compared to the traditional 2D graphene-based nanocomposites, the introduced 3D porous structure dramatically improved the catalytic activity, as well as the catalysis velocity and its affinity for substrate. The high catalytic activity could be ascribed to the formation of Fe3O4 NPs and 3D porous graphene structures. Based on its peroxidase-like activity, 3D GH-5 was used for colorimetric determination of glucose with a low detection limit of 0.8 μM.

Mechanism of ROS scavenging and antioxidant signalling by redox metallic and fullerene nanomaterials: Potential implications in ROS associated degenerative disorders. Biochim Biophys Acta Gen Subj 2017; 1861:802-813. Abstract
BACKGROUND The balance between oxidation and anti-oxidation is believed to be critical in maintaining healthy biological systems. However, our endogenous antioxidant defense systems are incomplete without exogenous antioxidants and, therefore, there is a continuous demand for exogenous antioxidants to prevent stress and ageing associated disorders. Nanotechnology has yielded enormous variety of nanomaterials (NMs) of which metallic and carbonic (mainly fullerenes) NMs, with redox property, have been found to be strong scavengers of ROS and antioxidants in preclinical in vitro and in vivo models. SCOPE OF REVIEW Redox activity of metal based NMs and membrane translocation time of fullerene NMs seem to be the major determinants in ROS scavenging potential exhibited by these NMs. A comprehensive knowledge about the effects of ROS scavenging NMs in cellular antioxidant signalling is largely lacking. This review compiles the mechanisms of ROS scavenging as well as antioxidant signalling of the aforementioned metallic and fullerene NMs. MAJOR CONCLUSIONS Direct interaction between NMs and proteins does greatly affect the corona/adsorption formation dynamics but such interaction does not provide the explanation behind diverse biological outcomes induced by NMs. Indirect interaction, however, that could occur via NMs uptake and dissolution, NMs ROS induction and ROS scavenging property, and NMs membrane translocation time seem to work as a central mode of interaction. GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE The usage of potential antioxidant NMs in biological systems would greatly impact the field of nanomedicine. ROS scavenging NMs hold great promise in the future treatment of ROS related degenerative disorders.

Abstract
Herein, we developed a label-free electrochemical biosensor for sensitive detection of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) based on DNA enzyme-decorated DNA nanoladders as enhancer. A peptide and single-stranded DNA S1-modified platinum nanoparticles (P1-PtNPs-S1), which served as recognition nanoprobes, were first immobilized on electrode. When target MMP-7 specifically recognized and cleaved the peptide, the PtNPs-S1 bioconjugates were successfully released from electrode. The remaining S1 on electrode then hybridized with ssDNA1 (I1) and ssDNA2 (I2), which could synchronously trigger two hybridization chain reactions (HCRs), resulting in the in situ formation of DNA nanoladders. The desired DNA nanoladders not only were employed as ideal nanocarriers for enzyme loading, but also maintained its catalytic activity. With the help of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), manganese porphyrin (MnPP) with peroxidase-like activity accelerated the 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) oxidation with generation of insoluble precipitation on electrode, causing a very low differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) signal for quantitative determination of MMP-7. Under optimal conditions, the developed biosensor exhibited a wide linear ranging from 0.2 pg/mL to 20 ng/mL, and the detection limit was 0.05 pg/mL. This work successfully realized the combination of DNA signal amplification technique with artificial mimetic enzyme-catalyzed precipitation reaction in peptide cleavage-based protein detection, offering a promising avenue for the detection of other proteases.

Abstract
Nanomaterial-based enzyme mimetics (nanozymes) is an emerging field of research that promises to produce alternatives to natural enzymes for a variety of applications. The search for the most cost-effective and efficient inorganic nanomaterials, such as metal oxides, cannot be won by pristine CuO. However, unlike CuO, the Zn-doped CuO (Zn-CuO) nanoparticles reported in this paper reveal superior peroxidase-like enzyme activity. This places Zn-CuO in a good position to participate in a range of activities aimed at developing diverse enzyme applications. The peroxidase-like activity was tested and confirmed against various chromogenic substrates in the presence of H2O2 and obeyed the Michaelis-Menten enzymatic pathway. The mechanism of enhanced enzymatic activity was proved by employing terephthalic acid as a fluorescence probe and by electron spin resonance. The nanozyme, when tested for the detection of glucose, showed a substantial enhancement in the detection selectivity. The limit of detection (LOD) was also decreased reaching a limit as low as 0.27 ppm. Such a low LOD has not been reported so far for the metal oxides without any surface modifications. Moreover, the nanozyme (Zn-CuO) was utilized to detect the three antioxidants tannic acid, tartaric acid, and ascorbic acid and the relative strength of their antioxidant capacity was compared.
