Recent advances in lanthanide-based POMs for photoluminescent applications

Since the first formation of the famous "Peacock-Weakley" anions [Ln(W5O18)2]8/9-, a steady stream of breakthroughs have been made in the chemistry of multitalented lanthanide (Ln)-based polyoxometalates (POMs) for their potentially desirable properties. In particular, LnIII ions are generally recognised as the "vitamins of the modern industry" owing to their ability to cover a wide emission range, endowing Ln-based POMs with great potential for versatile and diverse luminescence-related applications. In this frontier, we discuss the synthesis strategies and intramolecular energy transfer in Ln-based POM derivatives. Then, the progressive improvements achieved with Ln-based POMs in photoluminescence applications are highlighted, focusing mainly on luminescent and fluorescent probes. Finally, the challenges for Ln-based POM materials for photoluminescence applications are discussed.

High-Performance Visible-Light Photocatalysts for H2 Production: Rod-Shaped Co3O4/CoO/Co2P Heterojunction Derived from Co-MOF-74

Photocatalyst systems generally consist of catalysts and cocatalysts to realize light capture, charge carrier migration, and surface redox reactions. Developing a single photocatalyst that performs all functions while minimizing efficiency loss is extremely challenging. Herein, rod-shaped photocatalysts Co₃O₄/CoO/Co₂P are designed and prepared using Co-MOF-74 as a template, which displays an outstanding H₂ generation rate of 6.00 mmol·g^-1·h^-1 when exposed to visible light irradiation. It is 12.8 times higher than pure Co₃O₄. Under light excitation, the photoinduced electrons migrate from the catalysts of Co₃O₄ and CoO to the cocatalyst Co₂P. The trapped electrons can subsequently undergo a reduction reaction to produce H₂ on the surface. Density functional theory calculations and spectroscopic measurements reveal that enhanced performance results from the extended lifetime of photogenerated carriers and higher charge transfer efficiency. The ingenious structure and interface design presented in this study may guide the general synthesis of metal oxide/metal phosphide homometallic composites for photocatalysis.

Surface-Functionalized Au-Pd Nanorods with Enhanced Photothermal Conversion and Catalytic Performance

Bimetallic nanostructures comprising plasmonic and catalytic components have recently emerged as a promising approach to generate a new type of photo-enhanced nanoreactors. Most designs however concentrate on plasmon-induced charge separation, leaving photo-generated heat as a side product. This work presents a photoreactor based on Au-Pd nanorods with an optimized photothermal conversion, which aims to effectively utilize the photo-generated heat to increase the rate of Pd-catalyzed reactions. Dumbbell-shaped Au nanorods were fabricated via a seed-mediated growth method using binary surfactants. Pd clusters were selectively grown at the tips of the Au nanorods, using the zeta potential as a new synthetic parameter to indicate the surfactant remaining on the nanorod surface. The photothermal conversion of the Au-Pd nanorods was improved with a thin layer of polydopamine (PDA) or TiO₂. As a result, a 60% higher temperature increment of the dispersion compared to that for bare Au rods at the same light intensity and particle density could be achieved. The catalytic performance of the coated particles was then tested using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as the model reaction. Under light, the PDA-coated Au-Pd nanorods exhibited an improved catalytic activity, increasing the reaction rate by a factor 3. An analysis of the activation energy confirmed the photoheating effect to be the dominant mechanism accelerating the reaction. Thus, the increased photothermal heating is responsible for the reaction acceleration. Interestingly, the same analysis shows a roughly 10% higher reaction rate for particles under illumination compared to under dark heating, possibly implying a crucial role of localized heat gradients at the particle surface. Finally, the coating thickness was identified as an essential parameter determining the photothermal conversion efficiency and the reaction acceleration.

Mapping Hot Electron Response of Individual Gold Nanocrystals on a TiO2 Photoanode

Incorporating metal nanocrystals with semiconductor photoanodes significantly enhances the efficiency of the energy conversion in the visible range during water splitting due to the excitation of hot electrons. While extensively studied on ensemble samples, hot electron response of metal nanocrystals in a photoelectrochemical cell remains unexploited at the single-particle level. Herein, we systematically investigate hot electron response of individual single-crystalline gold nanocrystals (AuNCs) on a TiO₂ photoanode during water splitting. We directly correlate the morphology of the AuNC and its plasmonic property to the efficiencies involving hot electrons with the help of single-particle dark-field microscopy and photocurrent mapping. Our results show that the efficiencies of individual AuNCs are dependent on a variety of factors including interface condition, applied bias, excitation power, incident angle, and AuNC size. Our research may shed light on optimizing the light-harvesting capability of metal/semiconductor photoanodes by providing insights into the photocatalytic processes.

Gold nanomaterials as key suppliers in biological and chemical sensing, catalysis, and medicine

BACKGROUND

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with unique physicochemical properties have received a great deal of interest in the field of biological, chemical and biomedical implementations. Despite the widespread use of AuNPs in chemical and biological sensing, catalysis, imaging and diagnosis, and more recently in therapy, no comprehensive summary has been provided to explain how AuNPs could aid in developing improved sensing and catalysts systems as well as medical settings.

SCOPE OF REVIEW

The chemistry of Au-based nanosystems was followed by reviewing different applications of Au nanomaterials in biological and chemical sensing, catalysis, imaging and diagnosis by a number of approaches, and finally synergistic combination therapy of different cancers. Afterwards, the clinical impacts of AuNPs, future application of AuNPs, and opportunities and challenges of AuNPs application were also discussed.

MAJOR CONCLUSIONS

AuNPs show exclusive colloidal stability and are considered as ideal candidates for colorimetric detection, catalysis, imaging, and photothermal transducers, because their physicochemical properties can be tuned by adjusting their structural dimensions achieved by the different manufacturing methods.

GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE

This review provides some details about using AuNPs in sensing and catalysis applications as well as promising theranostic nanoplatforms for cancer imaging and diagnosis, and sensitive, non-invasive, and synergistic methods for cancer treatment in an almost comprehensive manner.

Hyaluronic acid-capped compact silica-supported mesoporous titania nanoparticles for ligand-directed delivery of doxorubicin

Mesoporous titania nanoparticles (MTN), owing to their high surface area to volume ratio and tunable pore sizes, appear capable of delivering sizable amounts of drug payloads, and hence, show considerable promise as drug delivery candidates in cancer therapy. We designed silica-supported MTN (MTNst) coated with hyaluronic acid (HA) to effectively deliver doxorubicin (DOX) for breast cancer therapy. The HA coating served a dual purpose of stabilizing the payload in the carriers as well as actively targeting the nanodevices to CD44 receptors. The so-formed HA-coated MTNst carrying DOX (HA/DOX-MTNst) had spheroid particles with a considerable drug-loading capacity and showed significantly superior in vitro cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231 cells as compared to free DOX. HA/DOX-MTNst markedly improved the cellular uptake of DOX in an apparently CD44 receptor-dependent manner, and increased the number of apoptotic cells as compared to free DOX. These nanoplatforms accumulated in large quantities in the tumors of MDA-MB-231 xenograft tumor-bearing mice, where they significantly enhanced the inhibition of tumor growth compared to that observed with free DOX with no signs of acute toxicity. Based on these excellent results, we deduced that HA/DOX-MTNst could be successfully used for targeted breast cancer therapy. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first study to use silica-supported mesoporous titania nanoparticles (MTNst) for doxorubicin (DOX) delivery to treat breast cancer, which exhibited effective and enhanced in vitro and in vivo apoptosis and tumor growth inhibition. Solid silica was used to support the mesoporous TiO₂ resulting in MTNst, which efficiently incorporated a high DOX payload. The hyaluronic acid (HA) coating over the MTNst surface served a dual purpose of first, stabilizing DOX inside the MTNst (capping agent), and second, directing the nanoplatform device to CD44 receptors that are highly expressed in MDA-MB-231 cells (targeting ligand). The NPs exhibited highly efficacious in vitro tumor-cell killing and excellent in vivo tumor regression, highlighting the enormous promise of this system for breast cancer therapy.

Polyamino Acid Layer-by-Layer (LbL) Constructed Silica-Supported Mesoporous Titania Nanocarriers for Stimuli-Responsive Delivery of microRNA 708 and Paclitaxel for Combined Chemotherapy

Cellular Fas-associated protein with death domain-like interleukin-1β-converting enzyme-inhibitory protein (c-FLIP), often strongly expressed in numerous cancers, plays a pivotal role in thwarting apoptosis and inducing chemotherapy resistance in cancer. An integrated approach combining chemotherapy with suppression of c-FLIP levels could prove paramount in the treatment of cancers with c-FLIP overexpression. In this study, we utilized a polymeric layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of silica-supported mesoporous titania nanoparticles (MTNst) to co-deliver paclitaxel (PTX) and microRNA 708 (miR708) for simultaneous chemotherapy and c-FLIP suppression in colorectal carcinoma. The resulting LbL miR708/PTX-MTNst showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity in HCT-116 and DLD-1 colorectal carcinoma cell lines, which was remarkably superior to that of free PTX or LbL PTX-MTNst. LbL miR708/PTX-MTNst strongly inhibited c-FLIP expression and resulted in increased expression of proapoptotic proteins. In DLD-1 xenograft tumor-bearing mice, the nanoparticles accumulated in the tumor, resulting in remarkable tumor regression, with the PTX and miR708-loaded nanoparticles showing significantly greater inhibitory effects than the free PTX or PTX-loaded nanoparticles. Immunohistochemical analyses of the tumors further confirmed the remarkable apoptotic and antiproliferative effects of the nanoparticles, whereas organ histology reinforced the biocompatibility of the system. Therefore, the LbL miR708/PTX-MTNst system, owing to its ability to deliver both chemotherapeutic drug and inhibitory miRNA to the tumor site, shows great potential to treat colorectal carcinoma in clinical settings.

Photoelectron Transfer at ZnTPyP Self-Assembly/TiO2 Interfaces for Enhanced Two-Photon Photodynamic Therapy

Two-photon (TP) absorption nanomaterials are highly desirable for deep-tissue clinical diagnostics and orthotopic disease treatment. Here, a well-designed core/shell nanostructure was successfully synthesized with a ZnTPyP self-assembly nanocrystal (ZSN) inner core coated by a homogeneous TiO₂ layer outside (ZSN-TO). The ZSN is a good photosemiconductor, showing both one-photon (OP) and TP absorption properties for red fluorescence emission and electron-hole pair generation; TiO₂ with good biocompatibility acts as the electron acceptor, which can transfer photoelectron from ZSN to TiO₂ for highly effective electron-hole separation, favoring the production of long-life superoxide anion (O₂^•-) by electrons and oxygen and strong oxidizing hydroxyl radical (•OH) by holes and surrounding H₂O. Once pretreated with ZSN-TO, the simultaneous OP-405 nm or TP-800 nm laser stimulation and fluorescent imaging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) showed dynamical and continuous generation of ROS in HeLa cells, with cytotoxicity significantly increasing via the type-1-like photodynamic therapy process. The results demonstrated that the combination of organic ZSN with inorganic TiO₂ has great applications as an excellent photosensitizer for deep-tissue fluorescent imaging and noninvasive disease treatment via TP photodynamic therapy.

Influence of dimensionality and crystallization on visible-light hydrogen production of Au@TiO2 core–shell photocatalysts based on localized surface plasmon resonance

We synthesized four Au@TiO₂ nanostructures, which exhibit dimensionality- and crystallinity-dependent photocatalytic activity towards H₂ generation.

Deposition of a titania layer on spherical porous silica particles and their nanostructure-induced vapor sensing properties

A titania-stearic acid hybrid layer was deposited onto well-defined silica-hexadecyltrimethylammonium hybrid spherical particles with 854 nm size to obtain nanoporous particles with a useful hierarchical core-shell structure. The deposition of a 35 nm-thick titania layer was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The core-shell particles were washed with acidic ethanol (solvent extraction) and calcined at 550 °C for 5 h to remove the template, resulting in the formation of nanoporous titania coated nanoporous silica spherical particles, which have a bimodal pore size distribution attributed to the hierarchical porous core and porous shell structure. The nanoporous titania coated particles exhibited an unusual crystal phase transition; only anatase was present even after the calcination at 1000 °C for 1 h. This would be due to the interfacial bonding between the core silica and the shell titania, preventing the crystal phase transition from anatase to rutile. On the other hand, the direct calcination of the titania-stearic acid coated particles without solvent extraction led to a shell composed of both anatase and rutile. The transformation to rutile could be caused by the strong exothermic reaction during the oxidative decomposition of the occluded stearic acid. Furthermore, the intense exothermic reaction induced the formation of a yolk-shell structure, which played a role in the sensitive/selective sensing properties for acetic acid when the yolk-shell particles were coated onto a nanomechanical Membrane-type Surface stress Sensor (MSS).

Tellurotungstate-Based Organotin-Rare-Earth Heterometallic Hybrids with Four Organic Components

A family of unprecedented tellurotungstate-based organotin-rare-earth (RE) heterometallic hybrids [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₆H₁₂Na₂ {[Sn(CH₃)W₂O₄(IN)][(B-α-TeW₈O₃₁)RE(H₂O) (Ac)]₂}₂·25H₂O [RE = Ce^III (1), Pr^III (2), Nd^III (3), Sm^III (4), Eu^III (5), Gd^III (6), Tb^III (7); HIN = isonicotinic acid, HAc = acetic acid] were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, UV spectra, thermogravimetric analyses, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The polyoxoanionic skeletons {[Sn(CH₃)W₂O₄(IN)][(B-α-TeW₈O₃₁)RE(H₂O) (Ac)]₂}₂^20- of 1-7 are constructed from two symmetrical units {[Sn(CH₃)W₂O₄(IN)][(B-α-TeW₈O₃₁)RE(H₂O) (Ac)]₂}^10- linked by two acetate connectors, which not only represent the first inorganic-organic hybrid RE-substituted tellurotungstates involving three different organic ligands, but also stand for the first samples of organotin-RE heterometallic polyoxometalate derivatives. The solid-state luminescent emission properties of 2-5 mainly display the characteristic emission bands of RE^III cations, whereas during the emission procedure of 7, [B-α-TeW₈O₃₁]^10- segments make a nonignorable contribution to the PL behavior of 7 accompanying by the occurrence of the intramolecular energy transfer from O→W LMCT energy to Tb³⁺ centers. Furthermore, 4@CTAB composites with peanutlike and honeycombed morphologies were prepared by a surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The time-resolved emission spectra of the 4@CTAB composite with CTAB/4 = 0.033/0.05 consolidate the energy transfer from CTAB to RE^III centers. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements for 2, 3, and 4 were performed.

Gold nanorod@iron oxide core-shell heterostructures: synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic performance

Iron oxides are directly coated on the surface of cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-capped gold nanorods (AuNRs) in aqueous solutions at room temperature, which results in AuNR@Fe₂O₃, AuNR@Fe₃O₄, and AuNR@Fe₂O₃@Fe₃O₄ core-shell heterostructures. The iron oxide shells are uniform, smooth, with characteristic porous structure, and their thickness can be readily tuned. The shell formation is highly dependent on the reaction parameters including pH and CTAB concentration. The Fe₂O₃ shell is amorphous and exhibits nearly zero remanence and coercivity, while the Fe₃O₄ shell is ferromagnetic with a low saturation magnetization of about 0.5 emu g^-1 due to its low crystallinity and the porous structure. At elevated temperatures achieved by plasmonic heating of the Au core, the Fe₂O₃ shell transforms from amorphous to γ-Fe₂O₃ and α-Fe₂O₃ phases, while the Fe₃O₄ phase disappears because of the oxidation of Fe²⁺. A 1.4-fold increase of photocatalytic performance is observed due to the plasmonic resonance provided by the Au core. The photocatalytic efficiency of Fe₃O₄ is about 1.7-fold higher than Fe₂O₃ as more surface defects are present on the Fe₃O₄ shell, promoting the adsorption and activation of reagents on the surface during the catalytic reactions. This approach can be readily extended to other nanostructures including Au spherical nanoparticles and nanostars. These highly uniform and multifunctional core-shell heterostructures can be of great potential in a variety of energy, magnetic, and environment applications.

Gadolinium oxysulfide-coated gold nanorods with improved stability and dual-modal magnetic resonance/photoacoustic imaging contrast enhancement for cancer theranostics

Gold nanorods (GNRs) are emerging as a promising nanoplatform for cancer theranostics because of their unique optical properties. However, they still suffer from many limitations, such as high cytotoxicity, low thermodynamic and biological stability, and a tedious process for integrating other imaging modalities, for further practical biomedical applications. In this work, a strategy by one-step coating of Gd₂O₂S around GNRs is reported to address these limitations of GNRs. After the coating of the Gd₂O₂S shell, the as-fabricated Gd₂O₂S coated GNRs (GNRs@Gd₂O₂S) show enhanced biocompatibility and photostability, and tunable localized surface plasmon resonance. The strong absorption in the near-infrared region renders GNRs@Gd₂O₂S outstanding photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy capabilities. Moreover, owing to the T₁ shortening ability of Gd₂O₂S, the GNRs@Gd₂O₂S also show an excellent T₁ MRI contrast performance. The GNRs@Gd₂O₂S thus can serve as a versatile nanoplatform for cancer theranostics combining dual-modal imaging and photothermal therapy.

Accelerated room-temperature crystallization of ultrahigh-surface-area porous anatase titania by storing photogenerated electrons

A technology for storing photogenerated electrons is for the first time applied for significantly accelerating the crystallization of amorphous TiO₂ at room temperature (reducing the reaction time from 80 to 2 days). The resulting porous anatase titania exhibits ultrahigh surface areas up to 736 m² g⁻¹.
