Electrochemical proton-coupled electron transfer of an anthracene-based azo dye

Herein, we report the thermodynamics, kinetics, and mechanism for electrochemical proton-coupled electron transfer involving the anthracene-based azo dye azo-OMe.

A photochemical and theoretical study of the triplet reactivity of furano- and pyrano-1,4-naphthoquionones towards tyrosine and tryptophan derivatives

The photochemical reactivity of the triplet state of pyrano- and furano-1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives (1 and 2) has been examined employing nanosecond laser flash photolysis. The quinone triplets were efficiently quenched by l-tryptophan methyl ester hydrochloride, l-tyrosine methyl ester hydrochloride, N-acetyl-l-tryptophan methyl ester and N-acetyl-l-tyrosine methyl ester, substituted phenols and indole (k q ∼109 L mol-1 s-1). For all these quenchers new transients were formed in the quenching process. These were assigned to the corresponding radical pairs that resulted from a coupled electron/proton transfer from the phenols, indole, amino acids, or their esters, to the excited state of the quinone. The proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism is supported by experimental rate constants, isotopic effects and theoretical calculations. The calculations revealed differences between the hydrogen abstraction reactions of phenol and indole substrates. For the latter, the calculations indicate that electron transfer and proton transfer occur as discrete steps.

Energy-Efficient Hydrogen Evolution by Fe-S Electrocatalysts: Mechanistic Investigations

The intrinsic catalytic property of a Fe-S complex toward H₂ evolution was investigated in a wide range of acids. The title complex exhibited catalytic events at -1.16 and -1.57 V (vs Fc⁺/Fc) in the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (HOTf) and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), respectively. The processes corresponded to the single reduction of the Fe-hydride-S-proton and Fe-hydride species, respectively. When anilinium acid was used, the catalysis occurred at -1.16 V, identical with the working potential of the HOTf catalysis, although the employment of anilinium acid was only capable of achieving the Fe-hydride state on the basis of the spectral and calculated results. The thermodynamics and kinetics of individual steps of the catalysis were analyzed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electroanalytical simulations. The stepwise CCE or CE (C, chemical; E, electrochemical) mechanism was operative from the HOTf or TFA source, respectively. In contrast, the involvement of anilinium acid most likely initiated a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) pathway that avoided the disfavored intermediate after the initial protonation. Via the PCET pathway, the heterogeneous electron transfer rate was increased and the overpotential was decreased by 0.4 V in comparison with the stepwise pathways. The results showed that the PCET-involved catalysis exhibited substantial kinetic and thermodynamic advantages in comparison to the stepwise pathway; thus, an efficient catalytic system for proton reduction was established.

Time-dependent view of an isotope effect in electron-nuclear nonequilibrium dynamics with applications to N2

Isotopic fractionation in the photodissociation of N₂ could explain the considerable variation in the ¹⁴N/¹⁵N ratio in different regions of our galaxy. We previously proposed that such an isotope effect is due to coupling of photoexcited bound valence and Rydberg electronic states in the frequency range where there is strong state mixing. We here identify features of the role of the mass in the dynamics through a time-dependent quantum-mechanical simulation. The photoexcitation of N₂ is by an ultrashort pulse so that the process has a sharply defined origin in time and so that we can monitor the isolated molecule dynamics in time. An ultrafast pulse is necessarily broad in frequency and spans several excited electronic states. Each excited molecule is therefore not in a given electronic state but in a superposition state. A short time after excitation, there is a fairly sharp onset of a mass-dependent large population transfer when wave packets on two different electronic states in the same molecule overlap. This coherent overlap of the wave packets on different electronic states in the region of strong coupling allows an effective transfer of population that is very mass dependent. The extent of the transfer depends on the product of the populations on the two different electronic states and on their relative phase. It is as if two molecules collide but the process occurs within one molecule, a molecule that is simultaneously in both states. An analytical toy model recovers the (strong) mass and energy dependence.

The photochemical alkylation and reduction of heteroarenes

The functionalization of heteroarenes has been integral to the structural diversification of medicinally active molecules such as quinolines, pyridines, and phenanthridines. Electron-deficient heteroarenes are electronically compatible to react with relatively nucleophilic free radicals such as hydroxyalkyl. However, the radical functionalization of such heteroarenes has been marked by the use of transition-metal catalyzed processes that require initiators and stoichiometric oxidants. Herein, we describe the photochemical alkylation of quinolines, pyridines and phenanthridines, where through direct excitation of the protonated heterocycle, alcohols and ethers, such as methanol and THF, can serve as alkylating agents. We also report the discovery of a photochemical reduction of these heteroarenes using only iPrOH and HCl. Mechanistic studies to elucidate the underlying mechanism of these transformations, and preliminary results on catalytic methylations are also reported.
