CO2-responsive gels

CO₂-responsive materials undergo a change in chemical or physical properties in response to the introduction or removal of CO₂. The use of CO₂ as a stimulus is advantageous as it is abundant, benign, inexpensive, and it does not accumulate in a system. Many CO₂-responsive materials have already been explored including polymers, latexes, surfactants, and catalysts. As a sub-set of CO₂-responsive polymers, the study of CO₂-responsive gels (insoluble, cross-linked polymers) is a unique discipline due to the unique set of changes in the gels brought about by CO₂ such as swelling or a transformed morphology. In the past 15 years, CO₂-responsive gels and self-assembled gels have been investigated for a variety of emerging potential applications, reported in 90 peer-reviewed publications. The two most widely exploited properties include the control of flow (fluids) via CO₂-triggered aggregation and their capacity for reversible CO₂ absorption-desorption, leading to applications in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and CO₂ sequestration, respectively. In this paper, we review the preparation, properties, and applications of these CO₂-responsive gels, broadly classified by particle size as nanogels, microgels, aerogels, and macrogels. We have included a section on CO₂-induced self-assembled gels (including poly(ionic liquid) gels).

Electrochemically Initiated Synthesis of Polyacrylamide Microgels and Core-shell Particles

Herein, we developed a simple procedure for synthesizing micrometer-sized microgel particles as a suspension in an aqueous solution and thin films deposited as shells on different inorganic cores. A sufficiently high constant potential was applied to the working electrode to commence the initiator decomposition that resulted in gelation. Under hydrodynamic conditions, this initiation allowed preparing different morphology microgels at room temperature. Importantly, neither heating nor UV-light illumination was needed to initiate the polymerization. Moreover, thin films of the cross-linked gel were anchored on different core substrates, including silica and magnetic nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy imaging confirmed the microgel particles' and films' irregular shape and porous structure. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicated that the core coating with the microgel film was successful. Dynamic light scattering measured the micrometer size of gel particles with different combinations of acrylic monomers. Thermogravimetric analysis and the first-derivative thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the microgels' thermal stability of different compositions was different. Fourier-transform infrared and 13C NMR spectroscopy showed successful copolymerization of the main, functional, and cross-linking monomers.

Observation of Unusual Thermoresponsive Volume Phase Transition Behavior of Cubic Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Microgels

Here, we report the observation of an unusual thermoresponsive volume phase transition behavior of cubic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgels. Cubic PNIPAM microgels with a mean edge size of 125 ± 41 nm were synthesized via electrochemical-initiated radical polymerization with a photovoltaic cell as power supply. In turbidity and laser light scattering studies on dilute aqueous dispersions of these cubic microgels, both the light attenuation and hydrodynamic radius variations with temperature reveal an additional transition at about 25.0 °C, besides the widely reported volume phase transition at the PNIPAM LCST that is typically found for (quasi-)spherical microgels. This unusual thermoresponsive volume phase transition behavior of the cubic microgels can be elucidated by using a core-corona model, with the contribution from each part varying at different temperatures. The finding is also checked by thermal analysis.

Preparation and Timed Release Properties of Self-Rupturing Gels

Swelling of polymeric hydrogels is sensitive to their cross-link densities. Here, we exploit this principle to prepare self-rupturing gels which are based on a commonly-used, nontoxic, and inexpensive polyelectrolyte, poly(acrylic acid), and are prepared through a simple and low-cost polymerization-based technique. The self-rupture of these covalently cross-linked gels is achieved by preparing them to have highly nonuniform cross-link densities. This heterogeneity in cross-linking leads to highly nonuniform swelling, which generates stresses that are high enough to induce gel rupture. The time required for this rupture to occur depends on the difference in the cross-link densities between the adjoining gel regions, gel size, order in which the variably cross-linked gel portions are synthesized, and on the ambient pH and ionic strength. Furthermore, when these self-rupturing gels are prepared to have liquid-filled (capsule-like) morphologies, they can act as timed/delayed release devices. The self-rupture of these capsules provides a burst payload release after a preprogrammed delay, which is on the timescale of days and can be easily tuned by varying the rupture time, i.e., by varying either the cross-link nonuniformity or the pH and ionic strength of the release media.
