Synergistically Boosting the Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Functionalized Pillar[5]arenes by Polymerization and Aggregation

Supramolecular polymers based on chiral macrocycles have attracted increasing attention in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) owing to their unique properties. However, the construction of macrocyclic supramolecular polymers with highly efficient CPL properties in aggregate states still remains challenging. Herein, w e constructed a class of macrocycle-based coordination polymers by combining the planar chiral properties of pillar[5]arene with the excellent fluorescence properties of aggregation-induced emission luminogens. The formation of polymers enhances both the fluorescence and chiral properties, resulting in chiral supramolecular polymers with remarkable CPL properties. Increasing the aggregation degree of the polymers can further improve their CPL properties, as evidenced by a 21-fold increase in the dissymmetry factor and an over 25-fold increase in the fluorescence quantum yield in the aggregate state compared to the solution state. Such a synergistic effect of polymerization- and aggregation-enhanced CPL can be explained by the restriction of intramolecular motions and aggregation-induced conformation confinement. This work provides a promising method for developing highly efficient CPL supramolecular polymers.

Porphyrin-based supramolecular polymers

Porphyrin derivatives are ubiquitous in bio-organisms and are associated with proteins that play important biological roles, such as oxygen transport, photosynthesis, and catalysis. Porphyrins are very fascinating research objects for chemists, physicists, and biologists owing to their versatile chemical and physical properties. Porphyrin derivatives are actively used in various fields, such as molecular recognition, energy conversion, sensors, biomedicine, and catalysts. Porphyrin derivatives can be used as building blocks for supramolecular polymers because their primitive structures have C₄ symmetry, which allows for the symmetrical introduction of self-assembling motifs. This review describes the fabrication of porphyrin-based supramolecular polymers and novel discoveries in supramolecular polymer growth. First, we summarise the (i) design concepts, (ii) growth mechanism and (iii) analytical methods of porphyrin-based supramolecular polymers. Then, the examples of porphyrin-based supramolecular polymers formed by (iv) hydrogen bonding, (v) metal coordination-based interaction, (vi) host-guest complex formation, and (vii) others are summarised. Finally, (viii) applications and perspectives are discussed. Although supramolecular polymers, in a broad sense, can include either two-dimensional (2D) networks or three-dimensional (3D) porous polymer structures; this review mainly focuses on one-dimensional (1D) fibrous supramolecular polymer structures.

Covalently bridged pillararene-based oligomers: from construction to applications

Covalently bridged pillararene-based oligomers (CBPOs) are formed by covalent bonding of pillararene monomers, and they play a critical role in expanding the multi-disciplinary application of pillararenes due to their excellent molecular complexing ability, specially designed geometry and multifunctional linking groups. This article provides a comprehensive review of the synthesis and applications of CBPOs. The design and synthetic strategies of a series of CBPOs (dimers, trimers, tetramers and others) are first introduced. Many CBPOs with multi-cavities and unique geometry are very attractive and efficient building blocks for constructing novel smart supramolecular polymers (SPs) with different topological structures through host-guest interactions. We describe the methods of constructing various SPs based on CBPOs in detail. Furthermore, the extensive applications of CBPOs and CBPO-based SPs in recognition and detection of ions and organic small molecules, selective adsorption and separation, artificial light-harvesting systems, catalysis, drug delivery systems, and others are systematically introduced. Finally, the future challenges and perspectives for CBPOs are also highlighted.

Construction of Supramolecular Polymers with Different Topologies by Orthogonal Self-Assembly of Cryptand-Paraquat Recognition and Metal Coordination

Recently, metal-coordinated orthogonal self-assembly has been used as a feasible and efficient method in the construction of polymeric materials, which can also provide supramolecular self-assembly complexes with different topologies. Herein, a cryptand with a rigid pyridyl group on the third arm derived from BMP32C10 was synthesized. Through coordination-driven self-assembly with a bidentate organoplatinum(II) acceptor or tetradentate Pd(BF4)2•4CH3CN, a di-cryptand complex and tetra-cryptand complex were prepared, respectively. Subsequently, through the addition of a di-paraquat guest, linear and cross-linked supramolecular polymers were constructed through orthogonal self-assembly, respectively. By comparing their proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) spectra, it was found that the degrees of polymerization were dependent not only on the concentrations of the monomers but also on the topologies of the supramolecular polymers.

The synthesis and applications of porphyrin-containing pillararenes

Recent progress regarding the combination of porphyrins and pillararenes into hybrid compounds and supramolecular systems is summarized in this review.

Pillararene-based supramolecular polymers

Pillararenes, as a new type of macrocyclic hosts, possess columnar structures and electron-rich cavities. Pillararenes not only recognize suitable cations, but also bind many neutral molecules. Due to the easy modification of pillararenes, various functional groups can be conveniently attached to the rim of pillararenes to provide suitable interaction sites, and the modified pillararenes even bind anionic guests. Thus, pillararenes and their derivatives have presented intriguing and unique host-guest recognition nature in the past few years, which make them ideal building blocks for the preparation of supramolecular polymers. Pillararene-based supramolecular polymers (PSPs) not only possess many merits of traditional covalent polymers but also have many specific properties, such as self-reparability, degradability, and self-adaptation. This feature paper gives an overview of the preparation of PSPs and covers recent research advance and future trends of pillararene-based host-guest pairs, assembly methods, topological architectures, stimuli-responsiveness, and functional features. We expect that the review will be helpful to researchers working in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science.

Fluorescent Supramolecular Polymers Based on Pillar[5]arene for OLED Device Fabrication

A series of AA/BB-type supramolecular polymers (SP1-3) based on pillar[5]arene host-guest interactions was developed and their photoelectric properties were further evaluated. The formation of SP1 was confirmed by multiple measurements via nuclear magnetic resonance and specific viscosity studies. The electroluminescence properties of SP1-3 were also investigated. As a result of the efficient energy transfer caused by the exciton trapping on narrow band gap guest G2, by applying a doping strategy, the light-emitting color of the resulting polymers could be easily turned from blue to green. Meanwhile, photoluminescent efficiencies up to 81.6% were obtained. All the supramolecular polymers prepared in this work were utilized as the emissive layers (EMLs) in light-emitting devices and a maximum luminance efficiency (LE) of nearly 5 cd A^-1 was achieved.

Self-assemblies of cyclodextrin derivatives modified by ferrocene with multiple stimulus responsiveness

Two novel cyclodextrin derivatives were synthesized that could self-assemble into a supramolecular polymer and gel in different solvent environments. Importantly, the obtained self-assemblies, including vesicles, micro-fibers and gels, could respond to various external stimuli efficiently.

The first water-soluble pillar[5]arene dimer: synthesis and construction of a reversible fluorescent supramolecular polymer network in water

The first water-soluble pillar[5]arene dimer was successfully designed and synthesized. It can complex with carboxylate anion functionalized tetraphenyl ethylene to form a reversible fluorescent supramolecular polymer network in water.

Pillar-Shaped Macrocyclic Hosts Pillar[n]arenes: New Key Players for Supramolecular Chemistry

In 2008, we reported a new class of pillar-shaped macrocyclic hosts, known as "pillar[n]arenes". Today, pillar[n]arenes are recognized as key players in supramolecular chemistry because of their facile synthesis, unique pillar shape, versatile functionality, interesting host-guest properties, and original supramolecular assembly characteristics, which have resulted in numerous electrochemical and biomedical material applications. In this Review, we have provided historical background to macrocyclic chemistry, followed by a detailed discussion of the fundamental properties of pillar[n]arenes, including their synthesis, structure, and host-guest properties. Furthermore, we have discussed the applications of pillar[n]arenes to materials science, as well as their applications in supramolecular chemistry, in terms of their fundamental properties. Finally, we have described the future perspectives of pillar[n]arene chemistry. We hope that this Review will provide a useful reference for researchers working in the field and inspire discoveries concerning pillar[n]arene chemistry.

The synthesis, structure, and molecular recognition properties of a [2]calix[1]biphenyl-type hybrid[3]arene

The first [2]calix[1]biphenyl-type hybrid[3]arene was synthesized. Its molecular recognition was investigated by using 1-dihexylammonium hexafluorophosphate as a guest.
