Polymer-Unit Graph: Advancing Interpretability in Graph Neural Network Machine Learning for Organic Polymer Semiconductor Materials

The graph representation of complex materials plays a crucial role in the field of inorganic and organic materials investigations for developing data-centric materials science, such as those using graph neural networks (GNNs). However, the currently prevalent GNN models are primarily employed for investigating periodic crystals and organic small molecule data, yet they still encounter challenges in terms of interpretability and computational efficiency when applied to polymer monomers and organic macromolecules data. There is still a lack of graph representation of organic polymers and macromolecules specifically tailored for GNN models to explore the structural characteristics. The Polymer-unit Graph, a novel coarse-grained graph representation method introduced in study, is dedicated to expressing and analyzing polymers and macromolecules. By incorporating the Polymer-unit Graph into the GNN models and analyzing the organic semiconductor (OSC) materials database, it becomes possible to uncover intricate structure-property relationships involving branched-chain engineering, fluoridation substitution, and donor-acceptor combination effects on the elementary structure of OSC polymers. Furthermore, the Polymer-unit Graph enables visualizing the relationship between target properties and polymer units while reducing training time by an impressive 98% and minimizing molecular graph representation models. In conclusion, the Polymer-unit Graph successfully integrates the concept of Polymer-unit into the field of GNNs, enabling more accurate analysis and understanding of organic polymers and macromolecules.

Vapor-deposited functional polymer thin films in biological applications

Functional polymer coatings have become ubiquitous in biological applications, ranging from biomaterials and drug delivery to manufacturing-scale separation of biomolecules using functional membranes. Recent advances in the technology of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) have enabled precise control of the polymer chemistry, coating thickness, and conformality. That comprehensive control of surface properties has been used to elicit desirable interactions at the interface between synthetic materials and living organisms, making vapor-deposited functional polymers uniquely suitable for biological applications. This review captures the recent technological development in vapor-deposited functional polymer coatings, highlighting their biological applications, including membrane-based bio-separations, biosensing and bio-MEMS, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. The conformal nature of vapor-deposited coatings ensures uniform coverage over micro- and nano-structured surfaces, allowing the independent optimization of surface and bulk properties. The substrate-independence of CVD techniques enables facile transfer of surface characteristics among different applications. The vapor-deposited functional polymer thin films tend to be biocompatible because they are free of remnant toxic solvents and precursor molecules, potentially lowering the barrier to clinical success.

Effects of solvents, additives, and π-allyl ligand structures on the polymerization behavior of diazoacetates initiated by π-allylPd complexes

We have revealed that the quality of control of the polymerization was improved by adding some compounds and polymer tacticity was dependent on the structures of π-allyl ligands.

Aqueous Phase Separation Behavior of Highly Syndiotactic, High Molecular Weight Polymers with Densely Packed Hydroxy-Containing Side Groups

Herein we describe the Rh-catalyzed C1 polymerization of silyl-protected diazoacetates of the general formula HC(=N₂)C(=O)O(CH₂) _x OSiR₃, where x = 2-5. After polymerization and subsequent desilylation, syndiotactic polymers bearing a hydroxy-containing side group on every backbone carbon are obtained. The molecular weight of the desired polymers can be controlled via chain transfer with methanol during the polymerization. The produced polymers are compared to atactic analogues formed by [(η³-C₃H₅)PdCl]-catalyzed polymerization of silyl-protected diazoacetates with the same general formula. While the polymers produced by the Rh and Pd catalysts have the same hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance, the stereoregularity of the polymers formed by the Rh catalyst was found to be of influence on the thermoresponsive behavior of the polymer. The effect of this stereoregularity on the thermoresponsive phase separation behavior of the produced polymers in aqueous solution was investigated.

Synthesis of poly(allyl 2-ylidene-acetate) and subsequent post-polymerization modification via thiol–ene reaction

Poly(allyl 2-ylidene-acetate) (M_w = 125 300 g mol⁻¹) was synthesized via rhodium mediated catalysis of allyl 2-diazoacetate and its polymerization kinetics and polymer characteristics are presented and discussed. Furthermore, post-polymerization modification utilized the reactive character of poly(allyl 2-ylidene-acetate) by means of thiol–ene reactions.
